4G data connection extends to the Audi A3 range for swift and seamless web surfing
- Functionality debuts in the new Audi S3 Sportback
- Full A3 family integration from November
- WLAN hotspot enables independent connections capable of video conferencing and high-speed streaming
Audi connect in-car internet access has just received a turbo boost as the Vorsprung durch Technik brand becomes the first carmaker to fully integrate the superfast 4G/Long Term Evolution data transfer standard into a production car.
The new fourth generation or ‘4G’ technology has just become available in the Audi S3 Sportback, and will reach all other variants in the premium compact range in November. The integration of 4G/LTE marks a very important step in the evolution of the Audi connect system, which networks the car with the driver and the Internet, and in the future could also provide an interface with the infrastructure and with other vehicles.
4G/LTE considerably broadens the scope of what is possible with in-car ‘infotainment’. This most advanced of mobile communication standards is currently available on a relatively small scale in the UK, but is scheduled for a wider roll-out during 2013. It enables the transfer of large amounts of data, such as music and films in HD quality, via the Internet.
In the Audi S3 Sportback, the MMI navigation plus uses 4G/LTE to deliver the many services of Audi connect to the driver – from navigation with Google Earth and Google Street View to Audi music stream web radio and online traffic information. Facebook and Twitter social media platforms have also been made vehicle-friendly with a text-to-speech function and a status function with prepared text modules. The ever expanding list of features also includes a fuel station locator which incorporates distance and pricing information, and a local parking availability and pricing function.
To use LTE, MMI Navigation Plus with Audi connect is required – available as part of the Technology package – and a suitable SIM card with a data flat rate simply needs to be inserted into the appropriate slot in the glovebox of the Audi S3 Sportback. When the passengers connect their mobile end devices to the WLAN hotspot integrated into the car, they can surf the web independently of one another. For example, one passenger can participate in a video conference while another watches a video.
LTE technology can be ordered for the Audi S3 Sportback now, and for all other variants of the A3 family from November. Audi connect is the keyword for the brand's intensive efforts to continuously develop new networking solutions. New technologies are increasingly making cars with the four rings more of an experiential space. The LTE standard is expected to provide a strong boost to the seamless use of media stored on a server on the Internet (data in the cloud). Audi is also a major driving force behind the networking with other automobiles and the transport infrastructure (car-to-X-communication).
Ford's Focus continues to be worlds best selling nameplate
- Based on Ford’s analysis of Polk’s latest global vehicle registration data, Ford Focus continues to be the world’s best-selling vehicle nameplate
- Focus global retail registrations up 18 per cent in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year with the U.K., China, and Brazil experiencing strong demand
- Focus range includes Focus Electric, 250 PS Focus ST and will be joined early next year by a new Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost variant – the first petrol-powered family car in Europe to offer 99 g/km CO2 emissions
- Focus now produced in nine plants worldwide, giving Ford capacity to build more than two Focus vehicles every minute
Ford Focus, the best-selling vehicle nameplate in the world last year, retains that ranking through the first quarter of 2013 with global vehicle registrations up 18 per cent compared to the same period in 2012.
Based on analysis of Polk’s latest global registration data, 288,724 Focus vehicles were registered in the quarter ending March 31 – the most recent figures available.
Cementing Focus’ grip on the best-selling passenger vehicle title was strong demand in key markets such as the U.K., Brazil and China. Focus registrations in the U.K. for the quarter totalled 25,081 vehicles. Brazil experienced an increase of 18 per cent with 7,227 Focus vehicles registered during the period. In China, 104,065 Focus vehicles were registered in first quarter 2013, representing an increase of 153 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2012.
“The statistics speak for themselves,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “Our global Focus has struck a chord with customers around the world because it offers remarkable technologies, excellent fuel economy and performance, super driving dynamics and all at a very competitive price.”
European customers can now order the all-new Focus Electric – the first full-electric vehicle to be built by Ford in Europe – in Saarlouis, Germany. The Focus Electric is also the first full-electric passenger car to be manufactured in Germany directly from a volume production line.
The flagship 250 PS Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car – having launched in North America last year and being introduced in the Asia Pacific regions this year.
Ford recently has announced a new version of the Focus that will be the first non-hybrid petrol-powered family car in Europe to offer 99 g/km CO2 emissions. Using a specially calibrated 100 PS version of Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, the Focus will achieve class-leading fuel efficiency of 4.3 l/100 km (67.5 mpg)*.
“Continual development has been critical to the Focus’ global success, as demonstrated by the new Focus 1.0-litre EcoBoost with 99 g/km CO2 that will launch in Europe early next year,” added de Waard. “More powerful than a first generation Ford Focus with a 1.6‑litre engine from less than 10 years ago while producing 47 per cent less CO2, it’s a testament to Focus development never standing still.”
To meet growing customer demand for Focus, Ford has ramped up capacity worldwide. In July, the company’s plant in Pacheco, Argentina, became the latest to produce Focus on a global platform. Focus is now built in nine plants on four continents. Factories in Germany, U.S., Russia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan and Argentina have a combined capacity to produce more than 1.5 million Focus vehicles annually at a rate of more than two vehicles per minute.

Skoda has a great sales hike in July
- New models successfully launched on first European markets
- ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback –ŠKODA’s first pure hatchback in the compact segment available from October
- In July, ŠKODA increases market share and sales in Western Europe despite challenging market conditions
- ŠKODA UK has 16% more deliverers in July compared to 2012
ŠKODA increases their market share in Western Europe thanks to increasing customer orders in July. The Czech brand saw a rise in deliveries in major individual markets such as Germany and the UK, and also in Ireland, Denmark, Finland and Italy. Despite the generally difficult economic situation, the Czech manufacturer reached vehicle sales of 69,700 in July (July 2012: 72,600; -4.0 %). Between January and July 2013 ŠKODA made 534,300 vehicle deliveries to customers (January to July 2012: 565,600; -5.5 %). ŠKODA’s sales development in 2013 has been influenced by the start of production and corresponding reduction in capacity of the newŠKODA Octavia model range and the refreshedŠKODA Superb. The third-generation ŠKODA Octavia has proved to be a hit with a higher number of orders coming in than expected.
“The new ŠKODA models have been a great success with our customers worldwide”, says Werner Eichhorn, ŠKODA Board Member for Sales and Marketing. He continues, “We were able to increase our deliveries to customers in Western Europe by almost five per cent in July and in the largest European individual market, Germany, by as much as ten per cent. The development of orders across the globe is particularly encouraging. We can see that the model campaign is really paying off.” The next highlight will be at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September with the world premiere of the all new Yeti, as well as the new compact hatchback ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback. With the Rapid Spaceback, ŠKODA is offering for the first time a pure hatchback model in the high-volume compact car segment.
In Western Europe, ŠKODA once again outperformed the market as a whole and delivered 26,500 vehicles to customers in July; up 4.8% on July 2012 with 25,300 ŠKODAs delivered. In the first seven months of the year, the brand’s market share in Western Europe rose to more than 3%. In the second largest market for ŠKODA worldwide, Germany, the Czech manufacturer sold more than 9,600 vehicles; up 10.2% on the same month last year with 8,700 units. ŠKODA strengthens its position as the strongest import brand in Germany. In the UK, a total of 4,900 vehicles were delivered to customers, which is 16.9% more than in July 2012. The brand also recorded double-digit growth numbers in Denmark with almost 1,200 sales (July 2012: 700 vehicles; up 59.8%), in Finland, with over 700 cars delivered (July 2012: 500; up 47.2%), as well as in Italy, with almost 900 ŠKODAs (July 2012: 700; up 25.4%). ŠKODA Ireland had a total of almost 700 cars, ŠKODA sales rose by 162.2% (July 2012: 200).
In Eastern Europe, ŠKODA sold over 10,000 cars in July (July 2012: 11,400; -12.4%). In Ukraine, the brand made 1,100 sales, which was up 21.6% on July 2012 (900 vehicles). Russia remains the Eastern European strongest market, where ŠKODA delivered 6,800 vehicles to customers (July 2012: 8,700; -21.8%). With 49,700 ŠKODAs sold (January to July 2013; -9.2%), Russia continues to be the third largest sales market for ŠKODA throughout the first seven months of the year.
In Central Europe, ŠKODA sales stood at 9,500 vehicles in July (July 2012: 9,600; -0.5%). ŠKODA sold more than 4,500 vehicles in the Czech home market (July 2012: 4,500). ŠKODA’s market share in the Czech Republic grew in the first seven months to 34.4%.
China was the brand’s strongest sales market in July. ŠKODA sold 18,000 vehicles there last month, which was down only slightly on the 2012 figure of 19,000 (-5.5%). The Czech brand delivered a total of 138,200 cars to Chinese customers in the first seven months of the year (January to July 2012: 139,700). This temporary decline in China is related to the model changeovers and correspondingly lower production capacities. The new models, such as the recently launched ŠKODA Rapid, are not yet fully available.

HOW MUCH for a F***ing handbag, you gotta be joking ? Bentley aint joking !
- Unique high luxury limited edition collection
- Two handbag models open a new chapter in Bentley experience for female customers and enthusiasts
- Elegant and sculptural handbags showcase Bentley expertise in design and craftsmanship
- Practical performance combined with unmatched levels of features, finishes and functionality
Today Bentley Motors announces the launch of the Bentley Handbag Collection at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the world’s premier event for automotive enthusiasts and connoisseurs of culture.
The launch marks the realisation of a project which is unique in the automotive industry, a reflection of the essential values for which Bentley is renowned worldwide: an exquisite design aesthetic, highly skilled craftsmanship, attention to detail and dynamic performance. The Bentley Handbag Collection transfers the functional luxury of our cars into an accessory that women can cherish.
Dr Ariane Reinhart, Member of the Bentley Board for HR, has spearheaded this star lifestyle venture to introduce more women to the brand and attract new female customers who share a passion for exclusive, high quality goods. “More than luxury vehicles, Bentley’s models today are capturing more and more women’s hearts through their elegant lines and flawless materials,” she comments. “As increasing numbers of women around the world enjoy greater professional success and economic status, so have they developed a taste for refined, exclusive products.”
The Collection features two distinct models – The Barnato and The Continental.
The Barnato is named after Diana Barnato, socialite daughter of Woolf Barnato, one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’ and chairman of the company. She was an experienced Bentley driver and an accomplished aviatrix. Diana was the first British woman to break the sound barrier and always portrayed both daring and glamour in equal measure.
The Continental is named for one of Bentley’s famed model lines, used on successive generations of Grand Tourers since 1952 and the underpinning of the brand’s current success since the two-door Continental GT coupe was launched in 2003.
Dr Reinhart adds: “Just as the Bentley Boys are our historical racing heroes, and an iconic part of the brand, today there is an emerging culture of confident and successful women, ‘Bentley Girls’, with the same adventurous spirit. We are creating this luxurious and stylish handbag series to appeal exclusively to these modern women.”
Bentley’s Head of Product Design, Daniele Ceccomori, has worked closely with renowned luxury leather bag designer and expert craftsman Vincent du Sartel to bring to life a wholly feminine interpretation of Bentley’s design concepts, highlighting the brand’s contemporary elements. “With the actual design of the handbags we wanted to create a strong link with some of the key features on our cars,” says Ceccomori.
“Starting with the exterior profile and volume, we have drawn inspiration from the iconic shape present on the rear aspect of the boot lid of the car; the split side panels echo the wing-shaped buttresses of the interior dashboard and help to enhance dynamism and elegance, allowing to play with different material and colour finishes, a classic Bentley bespoke feature.”
Inside, the handbags’ unique level of features and finishes are offered to evoke the same exact impression of when stepping inside a Bentley; they are exclusively lined all in fine leather with quilting features and functional compartments, including a waterproof pouch, elegantly blending core Bentley aesthetic values with everyday functionality and practicality, like a Bentley car.
Extensive attention has been dedicated to the execution of the details; the metal furniture with the typical knurled signature finish enhances luxury and the sense of craftsmanship unique only to the world of jewellery, in true Bentley style. To highlight the unique nature of the handbags each will contain a metal plaque that commemorates its individual number in the limited edition series, with the option to have this personalised to the owner and their car.
The Bentley Handbag Collection is available from October 2013. This limited edition collection comprises 160 bags globally, 80 of each style, in four colourways. This palette of options will be expanded in 2014 to include new models. Further information can be found at www.bentleyhandbagcollection.com

1961 Jaguar E-Type becomes the Royal Mail's First class stamp
- Jaguar’s iconic E-type celebrated on a new First Class postage stamp as one of the Royal Mail’s British Auto Legends
- Stamp illustrates an evocative 1961 Series One Jaguar E-type roadster in red as one of a set of six classic British motor cars
Arguably the most beautiful car in history, the Jaguar E-type’s stunning looks and 150mph performance are being celebrated appropriately on one of three new First Class postage stamps being launched today (Wednesday 14th August) by the Royal Mail.
The Jaguar E-type created a worldwide sensation when it was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, and more than 50 years on, the car continues to cause both excitement and desire, whether it’s on the road, or illustrated on a postage stamp.
The legendary Jaguar is joined by five other familiar and popular British classic cars, including a 1962 MG B, 1963 Aston Martin DB5, 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, 1968 Morgan Plus 8 and 1976 Lotus Esprit, with the iconic red Jaguar E-type roadster chosen for one of the three First Class postage deliveries; very fitting for such a swift and stylish performance car.
New Skoda yeti has lost it's charm and quirkiness for VW's corporate blandness
From one Yeti comes two
From one Yeti comes two – For the first time ever, the Czech compact-SUV will be available in two variants: as the elegant and stylish ŠKODA Yeti for the town, and an adventurous off-road ŠKODA Yeti. Both design variations of the ŠKODA Yeti feature a new front and rear, new alloy wheels, fresh interiors, new Simply Clever ideas, the highest functionality and extended engine/gear combinations. Both new models are to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and by the end of 2013, both new ŠKODA Yeti variants will have been launched on the first markets.
“The ŠKODA Yeti is one of the most attractive compact SUVs on the market and has far exceeded our sales expectations since its launch four years ago,” says ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. He continues, “With this all-new look and being offered for the first time in two variations, we are establishing new benchmarks. We plan to continue our outstanding development in this rapidly growing vehicle class. The Yeti is another cornerstone of the 2018 growth strategy and will strengthen our international position in the markets.”
Striking appearance – now in two variations
A special highlight is the first time offer of two individual design ranges: ŠKODA’s Compact SUV is now available in an elegant, stylish city look as well as an off-road look for trips in the country. A significant differentiation: the front and rear elements, such as bumpers, underride guard, side mouldings and door sills are either in the body colour or, as with the ŠKODA Yeti outdoor version, remain in black plastic.
The new fronts of both vehicles are now horizontally more accentuated and feature a distinctive grille and redesigned headlights, available as an option for the first time with Bi-Xenon headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights. In keeping with ŠKODA’s new design language, the front headlights are now rectangular and are now located further under the front bumpers.
The Yeti’s new rear has got a new layout. This includes a new form of tailgate with distinctive tail lights now in even more precise moulded C-Design, optionally available with LEDs, and, in line with the new ŠKODA look, two cubist triangular elements alongside the new ŠKODA logo.
The wheel program has been expanded with four newly designed, attractive alloy wheel designs. There is now a wider selection of colours available, including four new metallic finishes – ‘Moon-White’, ‘Jungle-Green’, ‘Metal-Grey’ and ‘Magnetic-Brown’. The latter is a Yeti L&K exclusive.
The new Yeti models have got an all-new fresh interior - with new 3-spoke steering wheels in seven variations, new fabrics and patterns for the seat covers as well as new decorative trims on the dashboard.
The first ŠKODA with rear-view camera
The Yeti is the brand’s first model with Optical Parking Assistant, an optional rear-view camera. This is the first time that the ŠKODA Yeti will feature the latest generation of the automatic parking assistant. The new system enables the Yeti to automatically reverse and parallel park and even pull out. The new ŠKODA Yeti features the automatic lock and start system ‘KESSY’ for the first time.
The revised ŠKODA Yeti has also received four new Simply Clever solutions. The double-sided floor covering in the boot is new. There is also a detachable LED light in the boot, the vest holder under the driver's seat and the waste container in the side door of the Yeti.
One highlight is, and remains, the ŠKODA Yeti’s VarioFlex rear seat system, offering unique interior versatility. The three rear seats can be individually folded or removed. The outer seats can be shifted across with the middle seat removed. In an instant, the Yeti is transformed from a five to a four seater, making more space for the rear passengers.
There are also the carried-over features like the fold-down backrest of the passenger seat, folding tables on the backs of the front seats, various storage compartments and practical bottle holders. Functionality is a top priority in the boot, featuring among other things, fastening points and fold-down hooks.
Generous space is once again confirmed in the Yeti. In no other compact SUV do the rear passengers have as much headroom as in the ŠKODA Yeti - 1027 millimetres. The boot capacity is at least 405 litres. Taking all the rear seats out increases the volume to a fantastic 1,760 litres.
Seven modern engines; front and all-wheel drive, manual transmission and DSG
There is a selection of four diesel and three petrol engines for the all-new ŠKODA Yeti - all turbocharged and with direct injection. The performance spectrum ranges from the 1.2 TSI with 77 kW and 105 hp to the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW/170 hp. The fifth generation front or all-wheel drive with Haldex coupling is fitted depending on the engine specs. With an automatic transmission, the ŠKODA Yeti exclusively uses the modern six or seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG).
The GreenLine version 1.6 TDI/77kW, with front wheel drive and a manual gearbox, produces CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km. That corresponds to a consumption of 4.6 litres of diesel per 100 km (61 MPG). Additionally, there are threeGreen tec engine variants: the 1.4 TSI/90 kW, 2.0 TDI/103 kW with manual six-speed gearbox, and 1.6 TDI/77 kW with seven-speed DSG. The Green tec package includes the Start-Stop System, brake energy recovery (recuperation) and low rolling resistance tyres.
There is an even larger selection of engine/transmission combinations. The diesel engine 2.0 TDI with 125 kW is available with the fantastic combination of all-wheel drive and automatic six-speed dual clutch transmission. The front-wheel drive Yeti 1.6 TDI 77 kW is now to get an automatic seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Safety without compromise
The ŠKODA Yeti is uncompromised in terms of safety, for which the compact SUV received the maximum 5-star rating in the 2009 Euro NCAP Crashtest.
Active safety is increased through ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ABS (Anti-lock Breaking System) with Break Assist. The front fog lights can be optionally equipped with Corner Function. New bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights increase the visibility of the vehicle and the illumination of the road in the dark. Upon request, there are electronic assistants for up and down hill driving. Other options include the electronic tyre pressure monitoring system.
With electronically controlled all-wheel drive (fifth generation Haldex coupling), and a ground clearance of 180 mm, the compact SUV is ready for any terrain. The electronic differential lock EDL enables a smooth and comfortable start and grip on various road surfaces.
In terms of passive safety, the Yeti boasts up to nine airbags. Isofix points securely fasten child seats. Three-point seat belts in the front with belt tensioners and height adjustment and height-adjustable headrests complete the safety package.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA small SUV has been released
Fit for off-road excursions
Progressive in design, versatile and with impressive off-road capability: the Mercedes-Benz GLA has been unveiled, aiming to set new benchmarks in efficiency as it mixes practicality with surefooted 4MATIC capability.
The first Mercedes-Benz in the fast-growing compact SUV segment is highly manoeuvrable around town (length x width x height 4,417 x 1,804 x 1,494 millimetres), lively on country roads and dynamic and efficient on the motorway (Cd figure 0.29). The high-quality appointments, developed with much love for detail, and the flexible interior clearly position the GLA as a compact premium SUV.
The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be optionally available with the new-generation permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC, with fully variable torque distribution in the UK.
The new GLA rounds off the extensive SUV portfolio of Mercedes-Benz in the UK. With four model series (GLA, ML, GL and G) the company offers the widest range of any European premium manufacturer, and meets all the individual mobility wishes of its customers. At the same time the GLA-Class is the fourth of a total of five new compact models from Mercedes-Benz. The sales figures amply demonstrate how well the new compact models are received by customers: In the first half of 2013, for example, 173,362 units of the A- and B‑Class and the new CLA Coupé were delivered worldwide (+58.0%). Especially gratifying is the high conquest rate of the new A-Class: around 50 per cent of the buyers in Europe come from other brands.
As a serene day-to-day companion the GLA has a flexible and variable interior. The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. The generous luggage compartment (421 – 836 litres) is well-presented and can be loaded without difficulty thanks to the low sill and the wide tailgate, which opens automatically as an option.
The particularly rigid body structure provides a reliable basis for a wide range of applications. Initially the power range of the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines will extend from 156 hp in the GLA 200 to 211 hp in the GLA 250.
The two diesel engines excel with dynamic torque and outstanding efficiency: The GLA 200 CDI develops 136 hp and maximum torque of 300 Nm and has a displacement of 2.2 litres. It emits only 114 g CO2 per kilometre (provisional figure). The GLA 220 CDI likewise has a displacement of 2.2 litres and develops 170 hp and 350 Nm.
The GLA will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt (12 to 22 September 2013). Orders will be taken from the end of November in the UK, and the GLA will be in dealer showrooms in 2014.
Interior: attractive design features and high perceived quality
The muscular and imposing appearance of the exterior is systematically continued into the interior. This has a particularly high perceived quality that is achieved by the contours, choice and combinations of high-grade materials.
All trim surfaces are galvanised in silver-shadow for material authenticity, resulting in a metallic finish with a "cool-touch" effect. The impression is one of perfect detail. The heavy emphasis on horizontals, the dynamic design and the highly attractive design features are other high-quality attributes.
The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy graining creates an attractive light effect. The three-dimensional trim section finished in aluminium lends a new, modern touch to the interior.
Five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard. As an exclusive GLA feature, bezels are optionally available around these circular vents whose SUV-look echoes the underride guard and side member claddings. The bezels can be galvanised as an option. The direction of the airflow can be varied by butterfly-shaped inserts which can be optionally galvanised in silver-shadow.
The large, free-standing display has a high-gloss display facing in piano-black and a flush-fitting surround in silver-shadow. This gives the display a particularly high-quality look. A three-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys and a galvanised chrome clasp is standard equipment. On request an instrument cluster version with two tubes is available. In this case there is a small dial instrument in each of the large dial instruments. When at rest the needles are in the 6 o'clock position. The needle inlays are always in silver.
The wide choice of seat upholsteries in material (e.g. leather, fabric, fabric/leather) and colour combinations allows plenty of scope for individualisation. Sports seats with integrated head restraints are available as an optional extra.
The high quality of the sports seats is emphasised by the aperture in the lower section of the head restraint. On the rear of the front seats this aperture is framed by a surround in silver-shadow, and can have ambience lighting on request.
If the optional Load Compartment package is ordered, the backrest of the rear seat unit can be moved to a steeper position, the so-called cargo position. This enlarges the load compartment capacity by 60 litres, providing space for bulky items while still allowing the rear seats to be used by passengers.
Set into a galvanised surround, the controls for the optional "electric seat adjustment with memory" are arranged on the interior door panels in typical Mercedes style – a unique feature in this segment. The interior door panels are likewise of extremely high quality. The soft, matt surfaces extend right from the beltline to the door pocket. In combination with the equipment packages the door armrests have a high-quality chrome trim strip and, as an option, ambience lighting.
*Note: These are German specification packages – UK specification will be announced in November
Aerodynamics: goodbye to box-shaped
With the GLA, yet another model series becomes the leader in its segment with respect to aerodynamic efficiency. Its Cd figure is 0.29. At 0.66 m2 the frontal area Cd x A, which decisively affects fuel consumption from around 38 mph is likewise a top figure.
The good air flow characteristics, which are a major contributory factor to the vehicle's low fuel consumption in everyday conditions, result from numerous aerodynamic optimisation measures. These include a low A-pillar step with suitable A-pillar geometry and aerodynamically optimised exterior mirror housings. The rear end is also streamlined. The measures here include the roof spoiler lip and the aerodynamically shaped tail lights. Rear spoilers at the sides ensure that the airflow breaks off for optimal aerodynamic efficiency. Seals in the front bumper (radiator area incl. around the headlamps) and radiator shutters for regulation of the cooling air as required round off the aerodynamic measures.
Extensive underbody panelling, additional panelling in the middle area of the rear axle and an aerodynamically optimised rear silencer followed by a diffuser improve the flow of air beneath the underbody.
Numerous measures have also been taken to reduce wind noise in the GLA. These, for example, include a multi-level door sealing concept, additional sealing of the joint between the tailgate and the roof and side seals on the tailgate. Particularly rigid window frames prevent the airflow from pulling on the doors at higher speeds, and reduce vibrations. External noise has also been minimised by the low A-pillar step and exterior mirrors connected to the body by a stem.
Engines and transmissions: dynamic claim to leadership
The GLA can achieve combined fuel economy of up to 65 mpg, setting new standards in its segment. Modern four-cylinder engines with turbocharging and direct injection, as well as an ECO start/stop function as standard, make for this superior efficiency. The new GLA-Class also takes the lead in its segment with its dynamic performance figures.
Initially the power range of the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines will extend from 156 hp in the GLA 200 to 211 hp in the GLA 250.
The GLA 250 4MATIC sprints from zero to 62 mph in only 6.5 seconds, underlining the dynamic claim to leadership of the GLA-Class. It has a top speed of 145 mph and a combined consumption figure of 39.7 mpg (151 g CO2/km – provisional figures).
The two diesel engines excel with dynamic torque and outstanding efficiency: The GLA 200 CDI develops 136 hp, a maximum torque of 300 Nm and has a displacement of 2.2 litres. This engine has been reengineered for greater efficiency. The modifications include optimisation of the belt drive, a cylinder head package with different roller bearings and additional finishing, optimisation of the vacuum pump, aluminium pistons with optimised assembly clearances and a low-friction ring package, the roller bearings of the Lanchester balancer shaft and pressure sensor combustion control in the cylinder head.
The GLA 200 CDI can achieve 65.6 mpg on the combined cycle, which equates to 114 g CO2/km (provisional figures). It is rated efficiency class A. The GLA 220 CDI also has a displacement of 2.2 litres, 170 hp and 350 Nm.
All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission (standard for GLA 250, GLA 220 CDI and the 4MATIC models), which unites comfort and sportiness to an outstanding degree.

Suspension: for guaranteed recreational fun
With the new GLA Mercedes-Benz is adding a new member to the successful SUV family. This compact model reinterprets the SUV concept in a new, modern way, because the GLA is less long-legged and imposing than previous SUVs, and therefore fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle. At the same time the optional 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the robust body structure and the variable interior concept guarantee plenty of recreational enjoyment.
Motto: away from the daily routine. Rough terrain – the beach, loose ground, unsurfaced gradients – all of these are no problem for the GLA.
The chassis of the GLA features a MacPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension. Three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel manage the incoming forces. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are independent of one another. The wheel carriers and spring control arms are of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. In the versions with 4MATIC, the rear axle carrier is isolated with rubber bushings for the benefit of ride comfort.
Compared to conventional systems, the electromechanical power steering provides better feedback to the driver and makes an important contribution to the vehicle's overall efficiency, as the servo assistance only requires energy when the vehicle is actually steered. It also allows various steering assistance functions that are initiated by the ESP® control unit. These include countersteering when the vehicle oversteers, steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip, reducing the effects of front-wheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber.
The GLA has an extremely rigid body, and therefore the basis for stable and safe handling characteristics both on and off the road, as well as a high level of NVH comfort. There are additional reinforcements e.g. to the B-pillars, front damper domes, side members and underbody.
High traction reserves: 4MATIC all-wheel drive
The GLA from Mercedes-Benz is optionally available with a new generation of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system featuring fully variable torque distribution. This all-wheel drive system excels with high traction reserves and outstanding agility combined with superlative driving safety and energy efficiency.
The components of the 4MATIC system include the power take-off to the rear axle that is integrated into the 7G-DCT automatic dual clutch transmission, and the rear-axle gear with integrated, electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch. This set-up allows fully variable distribution of the drive torque between front and rear axles. Additional benefits of this design are a lower system weight than is available from the competition, and high efficiency.
Confident on light terrain: off-road functions
Models with 4MATIC are equipped with DSR (Downhill Speed Regulation) and an off-road transmission mode as standard. DSR is activated by a control button in the centre console, and assists the driver on demanding downhill stretches by maintaining a slow, manually selected vehicle speed within the physical limits when negotiating downhill gradients. This is done with the help of the engine and transmission control systems, and by specific braking intervention.
When the off-road transmission mode is selected using the transmission mode switch, the gearshift points and accelerator characteristics are modified so that the requirements for driving on light off-road terrain and particularly loose surfaces can be met. In combination with Audio 20 CD (standard) and COMAND Online (optional extra), the head unit can also be switched to an off-road display. The steering angle, the selected off-road transmission mode and a compass are displayed there. The roll angle in degrees, the gradient in percent and activation of Downhill Speed Regulation DSR are also indicated.
Smart safety: advanced assistance systems
Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the GLA and reduce the driver's workload. Standard-fit features for the SUV include ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 4 mph.
This feature combines with DISTRONIC PLUS (optional extra) to become COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. This incorporates an additional function: When a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 18 mph, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.
Established assistance systems, such as the optional Lane Tracking package with Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist or Adaptive Highbeam Assist, are also available for the GLA. Active Parking Assist (optional) allows automatic parking in parallel and end-on parking spaces.
"Always on": the multimedia systems
The latest multimedia generation deployed in the GLA boasts new functions, additional apps and a modified graphic colour scheme.
Daimler's Digital Drive Style app concept, which together with the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone®" allows seamless integration of an iPhone® into the vehicle, has been extended. The highlights include Siri voice control and Glympse real-time location sharing. Glympse enables the user to share his or her current location with selected persons. Additional functions include Facebook®, Twitter®, internet radio, AUPEO!™ personal radio and the advanced navigation system from Garmin® with internet-based real-time traffic information, an online POI search function including Street View™ and a 3D map display.
The COMAND Online multimedia system has also been extended. The latest generation offers improved, photo-realistic map display, an additional Bluetooth® profile (to enable the internet to be accessed via iPhone®, for example, the display of images additionally in bmp and png formats and the real-time transfer of traffic data via LIVE TRAFFIC.
UK specification and pricing are still to be confirmed.

The new SsangYong Turismo arrives in the UK almost without competition. At over 5 metres long and with a 3 metre wheelbase, the car is larger than a standard sized MPV such as the Ford Galaxy, Renault Grand Scenic or SEAT Alhambra, yet is a car rather than a van-derived ‘people carrier’ like the Hyundai i800, Mercedes Viano or VW Caravelle.
Consequently its huge interior space and flexible passenger and load carrying capability means it can carry seven adults and 875 litres of luggage, through to two adults and 3,146 litres of load space, with seven alternative passenger and load combinations to choose from.
Designed to appeal as family, leisure and business transportation, the new car blends multi-role flexibility with great ride comfort and the appointments and equipment levels of a luxury saloon.
“With prices starting from just £17,995, there really is nothing like it in the market,” says Paul Williams, CEO of SsangYong Motor UK. “With key features being its innovative and flexible design layout, luxurious interior and highly competitive pricing, the new Turismo is a compelling proposition. Not only do you get a lot of car for the money, you also have the reassurance of an industry-leading 5 year limitless mileage warranty for complete peace of mind.”
The Turismo is now available to order from over 50 SsangYong dealers across the UK.
Design
SsangYong’s designers have gone to great lengths to create a distinctive and innovative look to its new MPV to satisfy owners and opinion formers alike. The brief was to create a practical yet at the same time luxurious and dignified tone that would blend well with the car’s numerous roles. Combining strength with volume, the front of the car has a robust stance thanks to its hexagonal shaped radiator grille and trapezoidal bumper, and the overall design successfully disguises its large exterior size.
Interior space
Thanks to its 3,000mm wheelbase, the car provides a huge interior space where seven adults can travel in supreme comfort with their luggage loaded in the back, without having to compromise on passenger accommodation. There are three rows of seats as well as a large load space which can be further increased by removing the third row completely. The second row of seats provides convenient ‘walk through’ access to the third row, and can also be folded individually and used as tables while still providing sufficient space to accommodate airline style seat-back folding tables.
Powertrain
The Turismo is powered by SsangYong’s own 2.0 litre turbo charged e-XDi200 diesel engine offering a level of performance and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) control that has already been tested, proven and praised in the marketplace.
The e-XDi200 engine offers maximum power of 155PS/4,000rpm and maximum torque of 360Nm/1,500-2,800rpm, and is designed to provide low end torque whatever the conditions on or off road.
There’s a choice of 6-speed manual transmission and 5-speed Mercedes-Benz T-Tronic automatic transmission, ensuring world class durability, smooth gear changing performance and quiet operation.
Turismo EX with 4x4
While rear wheel drive features across the range, the top of the range EX includes selectable 4x4 with low ratio as standard. This makes the Turismo EX a car you really can rely on, no matter what the British winter throws at us. It is also an especially practical proposition for those who tow a caravan, horsebox or boat trailer, or whose other country and leisure activities necessitate driving across challenging terrain. As with other Turismo models the EX has an impressive 2.5 tonne towing capability.
Ride & handling
The new Turismo utilises double wishbone front suspension and rear independent multi-link suspension for executive saloon style ride quality. This set-up offers a quiet and comfortable driving environment with firm body motion control, a flat ride and optimum stability regardless of the road conditions.
Safety
The car features a comprehensive package of active safety features, including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Active Roll over Protection (ARP) and Brake Assist System (BAS). There are dual front and side air bags, while ISO-Fix and tether anchorage points for child seats are fitted on the second row. Passive safety is further increased thanks to two high strength sub-frames fitted to the front and rear of the car. These help to disperse any impact shocks from a frontal or off-set collision and protect passengers by minimising cabin distortion.
Luxury, comfort, convenience
Noted for its comprehensive levels of standard equipment, SsangYong has ensured that the new Turismo delivers a high level of luxury, comfort and convenience. Air conditioning, electrically operated & heated door mirrors, a leather covered steering wheel and gear knob, and an MP3 CD & RDS radio with a USB & auxiliary port and Bluetooth connectivity feature across the range, while from the ES model, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and rear parking sensors also feature. The EX also gets a heated lower windscreen to prevent the wipers from freezing, solar controlled glass and rain sensitive wipers to make driving easier, while eco cruise control is standard on the ES automatic and EX.
Turismo is available in five exterior colours: Wine Black, Black, Gunmetal Grey, Silver and White.
Turismo range prices
5 year limitless mileage warranty
As with all models in the SsangYong range, the new Turismo is covered by a best in class 5 year limitless mileage warranty.
Designed to be totally transparent and give customers complete peace of mind, ‘limitless’ means just that: not a maximum mileage condition that some brands impose in their small print.
All the major mechanical components are covered including wheel bearings, suspension joints and bushes, steering joints, shock absorbers and even the audio system. Wearable components such as clutch discs and brake friction materials which could have their life reduced by poor driving are covered for one year or 12,000 miles, and the battery and paintwork for three years.
