Most powerful Volvo V60 Wagon in its history heading to the US

Targeting best-in-class performance and best-in-class fuel economy, Volvo Cars of North America announced engines for the much-anticipated Volvo V60 sportswagon that will hit American shores in January.

From the automaker known for its wagons, the new Volvo V60 is by no means ordinary. It provides all the handling of a dynamic sports sedan but offers additional versatility for people who need a wagon. Pricing and specifications will be announced at a later date.

Powered By a Range of Engine Choices

The V60 will feature front-drive power from the new Drive-E family and all-wheel-drive models will be powered by engines from Volvo’s current lineup. One of the Drive-E gasoline engines will be offered — a two-liter, turbocharged, 240-horsepower version.

“This is an exciting time of transformation for Volvo and shows our Swedish heart is beating strongly,” said Volvo Cars of North America President and CEO John Maloney. “The V60 signifies our first step in a gradual move toward powerful, highly efficient, four-cylinder engines across the entire portfolio of our vehicles.”

As a result, U.S. V60 customers can choose between the new engine and some current engines until Volvo transitions solely to Drive-E. At the top of the power heap is the performance-tuned T6 engine offered in the V60 R-Design, making 325 horsepower and 354 lb.-feet of torque.

The smaller, lighter Drive-E engines deliver considerably lower emissions and higher fuel economy savings — ranging from 13 to 26 percent depending on the engine to which they are compared. They also offer the opportunity to be augmented by electrification. Specific fuel economy numbers will become available shortly before cars with Drive-E powertrains reach retail outlets early next year.

Most Powerful Wagon in Volvo History

For the more performance-minded individual, Volvo’s R-Design version of the V60 promises a more intense driving experience. Decked out in distinctive R-Design visual cues, revved by the performance-tuned T6 engine and enhanced with Advanced Quick Shift — transmission optimization software that improves the speed of each gear change — the V60 R-Design will be the fastest and most powerful wagon in Volvo history.

New Corvette Stingray Coupe testing at the Nurburgring

Nürburgring is a name that evokes strong feelings in any motorsports aficionado and a place where racing history has been made and re-written time and again. It also is the location where the European model of the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe is currently being tested, a few months prior to the start of sales in Europe.

"Nürburgring is renowned for its demanding race track and it is perfectly suited for our purpose, which is to fine-tune the ride and handling characteristics of the European Corvette Stingray," said Jim Mero, vehicle dynamics engineer at General Motors. "We are paying particular attention to the suspension set-up and the steering at Nürburgring. European roads are quite distinct and different from those in the U.S., and so are driving habits."
Chevrolet's technical experts are currently assessing two Corvette Stingrays in Europe, both of which are driven on a wide variety of roads. The testing procedures are part of the GM standard quality control program which is conducted for each new Chevrolet model before it goes on sale in Europe.

Movie cars on the Rolls Royce display at the Goodwood revival

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will celebrate a record Goodwood Revival this weekend, with all three days of the popular event selling out a month ahead of the event for the first time. The local manufacturer of super-luxury motor cars will host customers, prospects, VIPs and also entertain the thousands of visitors to the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting in true Rolls-Royce style.

This year the Rolls-Royce showroom at the March Motor Works – an authentic recreation of a 1960s dealership – is the set for filming of ‘The Yellow Rolls-Royce’. The MGM movie was released in 1964 and featured an all-star cast including Ingrid Bergman, Rex Harrison, Shirley MacLaine, Alain Delon, Jeanne Moreau, George C. Scott and Omar Sharif. The scene is based on the opening sequence of the film, set in 1931, where the character Lord Frinton (Rex Harrison) is buying a Rolls-Royce Phantom II Sedanca De Ville from a London Showroom. The treatment of the film set décor closely follows that of the film and the theatre, only possible at the Goodwood Revival, will consist of the cast filming on set and in preparation for filming. The ‘Yellow Rolls-Royce’ will, of course, take the lead role. Expect the ever-present paparazzi and a cordon of the Goodwood Runners (period police force) to be on hand to hold back adoring fans.

Rolls-Royce will be represented on the Motor Circuit throughout the event, with a beautiful 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Continental in Velvet Green, with bodywork by James Young, forming part of the Course Director’s entourage. Very special guests of the Company will be conveyed in period luxury, with the silence of the ‘magic carpet ride’ only marginally disturbed by the ticking of the clock.

Departing the Revival, invited guests will return to the current day in contemporary luxury, as they are conveyed in exquisite Rolls-Royce Phantom and Ghost cars hand-built at the Home of Rolls-Royce, located within the Goodwood Estate, a short distance from the Motor Circuit.

Jaguar turns up in force at the Goodwood revival 2013

  • New film by renowned British model David Gandy driving iconic Jaguar sports cars and new F-TYPE convertible available for public viewing at Jaguar stand in ‘Earls Court Motor Show’ exhibition at Goodwood Revival
  • Current Jaguar models to join recognised classic models in Earl’s Court Motor Show’ exhibition

Jaguar will have a huge presence at the 2013 Goodwood Revival, which opens its gates tomorrow to a sell-out crowd of keen and enthusiastic historic motor racing fans.

Over 30 historic Jaguar and Jaguar-powered race cars will be competing wheel-to-wheel at the unspoiled Goodwood Motor Circuit over the Revival weekend, with racing C-types, D-types, E-types and Mark II saloons out in force, often leading the grid, including a number of very famous, priceless and notable examples of the marque.

Expect to see Jaguar C-types leading the charge in Friday evening’s 90-minute Freddie March Memorial Trophy race into the dark, marking the 60th anniversary of the Goodwood Nine Hour races that occasionally ran in the mid-1950s.  Jaguar Heritage Racing driver Alex Buncombe won this race in 2012 behind the wheel of a stunning C-type once owned by Formula 1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio.

Jaguar XK140s promise exciting racing in the Fordwater Trophy for production-based sports cars of a type that raced between 1955 and 1960, and a number of D-types will be vying for victory in the Sussex Trophy, competing against contemporary sports cars from Ferrari, Maserati and Aston Martin.  Over a dozen E-types and E-type lightweights will compete in the hard-fought two-driver Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration race for closed-cockpit GT cars.

The popular St Mary’s Trophy for 1960s saloon cars will have a special poignancy this year as the race is dedicated to the memory of the great driver, racing team manager and renowned Guildford Jaguar dealer John Coombs.  Coombs achieved fame with his racing Jaguar Mark II saloons, with the distinctive registration plates BUY 1 and BUY 2, as often driven by such motor racing greats as Graham Hill.  Appropriately ex-Coombs Jaguar Mark IIs will be completing in the St Mary’s Trophy over the Revival weekend.

Away from the excitement of the on-track racing, numerous historic Jaguar models will be present at Goodwood, with team support cars dotted around the scenic paddocks, and examples of almost every classic Jaguar model parked-up in the huge Revival Car Show car park for pre-1966 vehicles, based just over the road opposite the main Goodwood circuit entrance.

The new Jaguar F-TYPE will be on display on the exhibition stand inside the nostalgic Earls Court Motor Show, where the brand’s lineage can be clearly seen, contrasting the stunning F-TYPE with two classic E-type sports cars.

The famous British model David Gandy will premiere his new short film, Escapism, on the Jaguar stand in Earls Court. This film features David driving some of the most famous sports cars ever produced, and celebrates the latest addition to Jaguar’s iconic sporting bloodline, the new F-TYPE convertible.

In the film Gandy gives us insight into his life as he invites us on a road trip that starts at dusk as he escapes ‘the craziness of London’.  It features the style icon driving his favourite British heritage cars from the C-Type, E-Type and XKSS, through to the very latest F-TYPE.

Gandy discusses his passion for driving; “that feeling of freedom, just you and the car” and how driving is his ‘meditation’. Throughout, he wears the same Persol sunglasses as one of his icons, Steve McQueen, who famously owned a Jaguar XKSS that he affectionately called the "Green Rat".

Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 ‘Disco Volante’, Touring Superleggera, a stunningly beautiful car

To mark the 60th birthday of the legendary Alfa Romeo 1900 C52 ‘Disco Volante’, Touring Superleggera, a prestigious Milanese coachbuilding firm which has been designing and building vehicle bodywork since 1926, has created the 2013 edition of the Disco Volante with the official endorsement of Alfa Romeo.

The Disco Volante is a two-seater Gran Turismo with a completely bespoke, hand-made carbon fibre and aluminium body underpinned by the stunning Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupé with its front-central mounted 4.7-litre V8 engine and transaxle rear drive with unmodified specifications.

With the Touring Superleggera treatment the Alfa Disco Volante reaches a top speed of 180mph and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds.

Ultra-exclusive, the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante is a very limited production vehicle built only to demand with each model requiring 4,000 hours of painstaking craftsmanship to complete.

ALFA ROMEO DISCO VOLANTE: IN DETAIL

THE LEGEND

When it was revealed in 1952, the lightweight and ultra-aerodynamic Alfa Romeo C52 'Disco Volante' was considered a design icon almost right from the start. The unique basic design was even registered as ‘design patent’.

Based on the Alfa Romeo 1900 C, the car received a new tubular chassis and a lightweight, striking and aerodynamically-efficient aluminium body. The briefing at Carrozzeria Touring mentioned the need for a shape that was ‘insensitive to wind’.

Initially aimed at sports car racing, the C52 Disco Volante is one of the best illustrations of the credo of Touring’s founder Felice Bianchi Anderloni “Il peso è il nemico, la resistenza dell'aria è l'ostacolo" (Weight is the enemy, air resistance the obstacle).

DESIGN

The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring celebrates the myth of the 1952 style icon. The new design blends innovation, emotion and aerodynamic properties into a timeless and essential shape.

While some elements are inspired by the original dramatic form and proportions, the new body also quite futuristic with its unusually wide front wings covering the wheels, and the thin rear end encapsulated in powerful shoulders.

Inside, the 2013 Disco Volante continues the car’s design philosophy with a ‘science fiction’ feel including red LED interior light profiles. Aeronautical-inspired touches also feature on the dashboard, instruments and controls as exemplified by the seat adjustment lever.

The bespoke leather hides for the upholstery were manufactured to match the exterior body shade and these are matched with black AlcantaraTM. Naturally, buyers can personalise the interior design to meet their preferences.

DYNAMICS

The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione chassis forms the basis for the coach-built bodywork of the Disco Volante, integrally conserving the rolling chassis and drive train.

Chosen for its light and rigid structure and outstanding dynamic properties, the Alfa 8C’s steel space-frame and other structural elements were retained to guarantee torsional stiffness, high performance and the highest possible quality standards.

The frame members and the central carbon cell remained unchanged. Elements of the underpinning and the body, such as the engine bay and firewall, the windscreen and cowl, the A-pillar and the locks and hinges have been retained too, along with the dashboard, instruments, pedals and steering wheel. Certain parts, such as the doorframes, roof frame and C-pillar have been modified to match with the new shape.

The front-central mounted engine, transaxle transmission and rear-wheel drive layout offers optimal weight distribution of 49:51 front to rear. To ensure excellent handling the front and rear double-wishbone suspension is combined with forged aluminium hub carriers and additional trailing arms for the rear suspension.

The lightweight and compact 4.7 litre V8 engine delivers 450HP and 480Nm peak torque and is coupled with a six-speed, sequential transaxle gearbox with electronic control and paddle-shift gear selection. Together with a limited-slip differential and a state-of-the-art braking system with large diameter, ventilated discs, a precise, dynamic and exciting drive is assured.

ENGINEERING

All new and modified components of the Disco Volante have been CAD designed, using the most advanced IT tools and simulation techniques to cover feasibility, safety, homologation, aerodynamics and structural analysis.

To ensure torsional stiffness and noise reduction, special attention was paid to the under-body structure and its elements, such as the tubular frames supporting the rear wings and bumper, and the roll bar joining the C-pillars. Other complex design issues include the tailgate hinges, the 3D-cambered door window, and the front wheel covers.

A CFD aerodynamic study enhanced the airflow and ensured optimal downforce in the rear section. FEM calculations were then run to assess resistance and rigidity of all parts subject to homologation.

PRODUCTION

To ensure lightweight bodywork for the Disco Volante, a combination of aluminium and carbon fibre was used for the optimal balance of weight, resistance, precision, finish and quality, as well as ease of repair in case of damage.

The carbon fibre is used for specific components like the front bumper and grille, the bonnet, the side skirts, the boot lid and the integrated rear-window frame. The bonnet and boot lid are sandwich-built with Nomex filler to obtain a superior stiffness/weight ratio and to dampen vibration and noise.

The aluminium panels are hand-formed using an epoxy mould. Since the inner frames of most parts of the bodywork are made of carbon fibre, this requires the gluing of aluminium to carbon fibre. This technique adds to the rigidity as the glue itself also possesses structural properties.

The body panels are pre-assembled on a laser measurement platform using a jig. This ensures that the strict tolerance required is respected. After adjustment, the panels are either welded or glued. The body-in-white is then used to preassemble and fit all trim components, brightware and moulding.

To ensure constant and repeatable quality, the entire production process is documented and digitally logged. Like in series production, there is a quantified manufacturing cycle and a Bill of Materials. Tolerances, measurements and other quality standards are all quantified.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

The quality control process includes static as well as dynamic test runs before the car is signed off. The static-test protocol requires compliance to high standards in interstice and surface alignment, paint and coating quality, interior trim and assembly.

A functionality test is run in a climatic chamber. The dynamic test takes place on the proving ground and includes high-speed runs, cornering and other handling tests on several types of surfaces. Beside routine checks for creaks, rattles or other noise, it concentrates on handling, braking and all other functionalities.

Yet another great month in the UK for sales, with another a near 11% increase on the month and 10% on the year, the car manufacturers are having a good time, and this will continue with many new models coming on stream over the next three months from the MG3 to Seat's Leon ST, Skoda's new Yeti, Superb face lift and Octavia VRs, to New Insignia, Nissan Note, 308 and Kia Soul to name but a tiny amount.

Dacia is the new darling of the UK sales with nearly 9,000 already sold and that's with four model lineup, whereas on the other hand MG continue to be embarrassed by it tiny sales, 13 again, and I suspect that some if not all of those were pre-registered MG3 models ready to be used for press reviews, I will be reviewing the MG3 in the next week, after the MG6, Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5, so keep an eye out for these.

The usual suspects are in the top ten sales charts, Fiesta, Focus, Astra, Corsa, Golf, Polo, Qashqai, 1 and 3 series and surprisingly the Vauxhall Insignia, surprising because it is currently on run out ready for the next gen version, so maybe either a lot of pre-reg or some very cheap deals, those are readily available, again i will be doing a report on these in the next month or two.

The UK has seen an unprecedented 18 month of continuous rise in sales, during which the world has seen continued difficulties in labour, financial and personal circumstances, can the UK carry on with these rises, or will there be another collapse like the collapse that occurred in both June 2009 and December 2011, will there be anymore corporate collapses like MG-Rover and SAAB, as pricing gets more competitive, and margins get slimmer, can the smaller brands compete in an ever more difficult market.

FRANKFURT - Nissan Friend-Me concept

  • Friend-Me concept makes European debut in Frankfurt
  • Nissan's bold design philosophy applied to advanced concept
  • Dynamic, sporty design previews future Nissan design language
  • Advanced interior with four individual seats and infotainment displays for all
  • Powered by advanced PureDrive hybrid drivetrain

The drive to design the future is one that fuels Nissan at every level. The brand's bold vision of how the next generation of saloons will look delivers an exciting snapshot of motoring in years to come.

Nissan's unique approach to design has resulted in some of the most groundbreaking and original new cars to be launched in the course of the last decade. The crossover - pioneered, evolved and perfected by Nissan - has transformed the look of streets and urban environments around the world.

The innovative new Friend-Me channels this same passion for design excitement and originality into a concept that explores the possibilities for a next-generation saloon. Making its European debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Friend-Me combines sporty and dynamic new design features with a cabin that showcases Nissan's latest vision of in-car technology and entertainment. Yet despite its futuristic feel, Friend-Me is designed and engineered to be accessible to all. Even the most innovative features showcased on Friend-Me enjoy a link to production reality, and deliver a tempting vision of what buyers can expect from the future.

Friend-Me was first shown at the 2013 Auto Shanghai, where it explored the desires of future car buyers. "We call our solution ‘Distilled Da Qi,'" said Taiji Toyota, Vice President of Nissan Design China. "'Da Qi is about casting an aura, about standing out, but at the same time going with the flow, fitting in. It's a question of balance, and we've worked to refine it right down to the essence. The result adds an entirely new and youthful dimension to the sedan category."

Exterior: excitement and elegance combined
With dynamic design that conveys a real spirit of adventure and luxury, Friend-Me is the ultimate expression of modern automotive style.

Nissan's desire to challenge design convention is evident in every element of Friend-Me's exterior. Friend-Me delivers a bold, dynamic look that combines dramatic curves with intricate details.

The front end is dominated by a deep-set V-motion grille that frames the backlit Nissan badge and extends outwards to incorporate striking headlamp clusters at either end. Introducing an exciting new design language, the distinctive v-shaped contours flow elegantly over the front wings and down the sides of the car to create a powerful, taut profile.

In true Nissan style, the Friend-Me features striking details such as the LED headlamps that incorporate a unique boomerang-shaped lighting signature. The 20-inch wheels incorporate a twisted five-spoke design that accentuates the impression of movement, along with gloss black aero vanes that help smooth air-flow around the car.

Further back, Friend-Me's floating roof and shallow glass area provide strong visual links to other members of the Nissan family, while kick-up shape around the C-pillar creates another striking styling cue. Bold swage lines create a dramatic waistline, while the gently flared rear wheel arches flow neatly into the rear bumper.

The rear of Friend-Me incorporates more dramatic elements including racing-style underfloor venturi and bold boomerang-shaped lamp clusters.

Interior: four seats - one mind connectivity
Nissan's ongoing commitment to innovation, accessible technology and passenger involvement is showcased in Friend-Me's cabin.

Nissan believes that every passenger deserves the best, so Friend-Me features four individual lounge-style seats designed to deliver maximum comfort and safety levels to passengers. Deeply sculpted and multi-adjustable, each is surrounded by a high shoulder line - further enhancing the feeling of security and protection for everybody on board. Friend-Me's seats also help create a feeling of opulence and comfort not normally found in the saloon and hatchback market.

The cabin is dominated by a unique centre console that runs the entire length of the passenger compartment. Designed to deliver all four passengers entertainment and information on the move, it forms the digital heart of the car. Formed from numerous screens that sit below a single glass surface, the Friend-Me's displays can be configured to whatever each individual passenger desires. The technology also incorporates an advanced IT system that allows passengers to share information, pictures and music from their mobile devices. The integrated monitor screens also allow passengers to connect to friends or family members connected over the Internet or in other cars.

Each passenger can also access real-time information about the car's status and performance. So, if those in the back seats want to know where they are during their journey, calling up the navigation system onto their monitor screens puts all the answers at their fingertips.

At the front, the driver has access to an equally advanced display, with a glass-fronted interface designed to be as simple as possible to operate. Nissan believes that advanced technology is only truly useful if users can easily engage with it, so all elements of Friend-Me's central display have been created to be as simple to use as possible.

Drivetrain: a dream within reach
Nissan Friend-Me has been carefully designed as a dream within reach. Based on existing Nissan platform architecture, it combines current technologies with next-generation innovations to provide an enticing view of the future.

Powering Friend-Me is an efficient PureDrive hybrid powertrain that offers exceptional economy and emissions with flexible range. Designed to deliver agile performance in an out of the city, the Nissan-developed drivetrain combines a petrol engine with latest-generation lithium-ion batteries to provide a seamless driving experience.

FRANKFURT - Honda

The 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show provides the setting for Honda to publicly reveal the new Civic Tourer. Developed and designed in Europe, the new Civic Tourer offers class-leading trunk volume of 624 litres (rear seats up, measured up to the tonneau cover), advanced technology and distinctive styling.

The Civic Tourer will be offered with Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine which combines competitive power (120 PS) and 300 Nm of torque with CO² emissions of just 99g/km*, offering an impressive balance of fuel economy and driving performance.

The refreshed Civic hatchback will also be shown for the first time. The car will benefit from exterior and interior refinements that give the Civic an even more distinctive, sportier appearance. The Civic and the Civic Tourer will be built at Honda’s UK manufacturing facility in Swindon and will be launched in early 2014.

Both cars will benefit from a new suite of advanced active safety systems that Honda will introduce for the first time on these models under the Advanced Driving Assist Systems name. These sensor based active safety systems use a combination of cameras and short range lidar (laser radar), and radar technologies to help avoid or mitigate accidents, delivering a high standard of safety for the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other road users in line with Honda’s philosophy of ‘Safety for Everyone’.

Also on display is the CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC unveiled at Geneva earlier this year. The CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC available in two-wheel drive with manual transmission, offers both performance (300Nm of torque and 120 PS) and low CO2 emissions (119 g/km).

Racing is in Honda’s DNA and the coming years herald a return to the brand’s sporty heritage with the introduction of exciting new models and Honda’s return to Formula One (in a joint project with McLaren). In celebration of this and Honda’s current successes in Motorsport across the World, including Moto GP, WTCC, BTCC and Dakar Rally, Honda will showcase a collection of modern and historic racing machines alongside its ultimate supercar, the NSX Concept II first shown in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in the year. Honda Civic Tourer
Developed and designed in Europe, allowing Honda’s European R&D team to lead the creative and technical design process, the new Civic Tourer features a sleek and sophisticated exterior profile that does not compromise the car’s practicality. The Civic Tourer delivers exceptional versatility and functionality with class leading interior space of 624 litres (boot volume with the rear seats up, measured up to the tonneau cover).

The Civic Tourer will be offered with the new 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine from Honda’s Earth Dream’s Technology series. The engine is the lightest in its class, delivering 300 Nm of torque and CO² emissions from just 99g/km*. The Civic Tourer will also be offered with Honda’s 1.8 i-VTEC engine in manual or automatic transmission producing from only 148g* of CO² per km.

A brand new Adaptive Damper System will help to enhance the stability and comfort of the Civic Tourer under varying load and driving conditions and new advanced Active Safety features to deliver a high standard of safety.

Functionality & Form: No compromise on design or space
“I am very proud of the Civic Tourer’s sporty, sleek and dynamic proportions, which somewhat hide the car’s true functionality and versatility. To achieve true utility on a compact car, you have to consider how to make the most of the space in the cabin, which generally also affects the design. Due to the clever platform of the Civic, we had freedom to optimise the package. The end result is a car that has almost a sports-car silhouette. For me, the strength of the car is the synergy of functionality, versatility, and dynamic expression.” Adrian Killham, Large Project Leader, Civic Tourer.

The exterior design of the Civic Tourer is sophisticated and sporty, its style is defined by a bold line that runs continuously from the front A-pillar to the D-pillar creating the impression of a floating roof line.

The development team for the Civic Tourer concentrated on new ways to interpret this section of the car to deliver a premium feeling and character. The glass of the rear quarter window has been extended to cover the body work of the D-pillar and the rear door sash has been raised by 17mm compared to the Civic hatchback to enable this bold styling line and creating an elegant look.

“At first glance it is clear that the Civic Tourer does not look like other Wagons. Recently-launched cars have tended to follow a similar style. The Civic Tourer has a different balance and appeal.” Adrian Killham, Large Project Leader, Civic Tourer.

Behind this sophisticated and sporty design is a hidden versatility that leads to clever functionality and unrivalled practicality.

The Civic Tourer benefits from the same unique centre fuel tank layout used in the Civic hatchback. The fuel tank is located under the front seats allowing the Civic Tourer to offer unparalleled interior space and Honda’s magic seat configuration.

The Civic Tourer offers class leading trunk space across both the C and D segments. The cargo area will accommodate 3 large-sized Samsonite cases with the tonneau cover pulled over to conceal the cases.

624 litres* boot volume (rear seats up, up to window)
1668 litres* boot volume (rear seats down, up to roof lining)
There is a clever, hidden compartment suitable for storing the tonneau cover so that it can be detached and stored out the way when it is not needed.

Furthermore, there is additional under floor storage in the boot which makes carrying tall objects in the boot easy and the height of the loading lip has been reduced by 137mm* compared to the Civic hatchback to facilitate easier loading.

Honda’s unique Magic Seats deliver further practicality and space within the Civic Tourer, enabling a range of seating configurations for maximum versatility. The rear seats assembly folds down in one easy movement, and the interior trunk floor of the Civic Tourer has been raised compared to the hatchback to create a completely flat area when the seats are folded down. The rear seat cushions can also be flipped up to reveal ample floor space for carrying tall objects. A 60:40 split in the seat base offers even more options for carrying both people and cargo and provides an alternative load area if access via the tailgate is limited.

Driving Performance: Advanced and Efficient Technology
The Civic Tourer will be offered with the new 1.6 i-DTEC diesel engine from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series, with a six speedmanual transmission. This engine is the first from the Earth Dreams Technology series to be introduced in Europe. The 1.6 i-DTEC engine is also offered in the CR-V and Civic and is the lightest in its class, delivering 300 Nm of torque and in the Civic Tourer, CO² emissions from just 99g/km*.
The philosophy behind Earth Dreams Technology is to deliver an impressive balance between fuel economy and driving performance and this is certainly the case in the Civic Tourer. This new model also delivers low running costs for customers, with only 99 g/km of CO2, the Civic Tourer is VED exempt and 74.3 mpg means it’s longer between fill ups

The 1.6 i-DTEC engine is comprised of an aluminium cylinder head joined to an open deck aluminium block and is the lightest diesel engine in its class. The mechanical friction has been reduced to the level equivalent of a petrol engine. All the rotating parts have been carefully optimised to reduce their friction, helping to provide excellent fuel economy whilst making sure the new Civic Tourer is fun to drive.

The 1.6 i-DTEC engine was designed specifically for the European Market and is built at Honda’s UK Manufacturing plant (where the Civic Tourer will also be built). The Civic Tourer will also be offered with Honda’s proven 1.8 i-VTEC engine in manual or automatic transmission producing from only 148g* of CO² per km.

Adaptive Damper System
The Civic Tourer will feature an innovative rear Adaptive Damper System, a first for a production car. The system has three settings - comfort, normal and dynamic - all of which have been developed to enhance stability and comfort under varying load and driving conditions. This allows the Civic Tourer to remain comfortable during motorway cruising, yet firm and agile when high-performance handling is required.

“By introducing the technology in this format, we expect many customers will be able to experience the benefits of this advanced system.” Adrian Killham, Large Project Leader.

Safety
As with all Honda cars, safety was at the forefront of the development team’s mind when designing the Civic Tourer, particularly the integration of active safety systems known as Advanced Driving Assist Systems.

Honda has introduced a new suite of sensor based active safety systems that use a combination of cameras, short range lidar (Laser Radar) and radar technologies. The Civic Tourer and the refreshed Civic hatchback will both utilise these technologies and many other advanced safety features to deliver a high standard of safety for the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other road users in line with Honda’s philosophy of ‘Safety for Everyone’.

For details of Advanced Driving Assist Systems fitted to the Civic Tourer please see “Safety for Everyone” section below.

Refreshed and Refined 2014 Honda Civic
Honda will show the refreshed 2014 Civic for the first time at Frankfurt Motor Show. The car will benefit from exterior and interior refinements that give the Civic a more distinctive, sportier appearance. The updated exterior styling focuses on the rear of the car with the introduction of privacy glass to the windows . In addition, smoke coloured rear combination lights have also been introduced. A smart black border now surrounds the license plate, tailgate and a new lower bumper. The Civic also features a new front bumper frame, a darker wheel arch finish and new 17” Aluminum silver and black wheels.

Subtle changes to the interior further emphasise the interior quality of the refreshed Civic. These styling changes include new white stitching detail that has been applied to the steering wheel, seat and knee pad and black buttons on the audio panel and steering wheel switches.

The Civic has also undergone small adjustments to the front and rear suspension and steering in order to optimise linearity, stability and the ride comfort particularly at high speeds. More information will be provided at the European Media Test drive later this year.

The Civic will feature the same suite of new sensor based active safety systems that use a combination of cameras and short range lidar technologies that are being introduced on the Civic Tourer. For details of Advanced Driver Assist Systems fitted to the Civic Tourer please see “Safety for Everyone” section below.

The refreshed Civic will be built at Honda’s UK manufacturing facility in Swindon and will be launched in early 2014.

Safety for Everyone
Honda’s commitment to safety is embodied by the term ‘Safety for Everyone’; safety for drivers, but also safety for passengers, pedestrians and occupants of all vehicles. Honda’s car-to-car crash test facility at the Tochigi R&D plant analyses impacts between models of different sizes and weights and develops solutions to mitigate injuries for both passengers and pedestrians.

As with all Honda cars, safety was at the forefront of the development team’s mind when designing the refreshed Civic and the Civic Tourer. Particularly important was the integration of advanced active safety systems known as Advanced Driver Assist Systems. This suite of sensor based active safety systems will be using a combination of cameras and short range lidar and radar technologies:

Advanced Driver Assist Systems available on the Civic and Civic Tourer will include*;

Lane Departure Warning
Lane Departure Warning detects road markings and if the car deviates from your current lane without indicating, Lane Departure Warning alerts you with audible and visual warnings.

Traffic Sign Recognition
Traffic Sign Recognition has the ability to automatically recognise road signs and display them via the intelligent Multi Information Display. Two road signs can be displayed at any one time.

Blind Spot Information
Blind Spot Information is a Honda-first radar technology which can automatically detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and warns of potential dangers.

Forward Collision Warning
Forward Collision Warning detects risk of collision by recognising the vehicle directly infront using a camera. The system operates when the car is at a speed of 9 mph and above. The system offers visible and audible warnings.

High-beam Support System
This system detects oncoming vehicles, bicycles and environmental brightness and automatically applies the High beam on/off when necessary. This system can be switched on or off by the driver.

Cross Traffic Monitor
Honda’s Cross Traffic Monitor system warns the driver when reversing of approaching vehicles using rear side radar sensors that are located in the rear bumper of the car. The direction of an approaching vehicle is shown either on the rear camera screen or displayed using arrows showing the direction of the travelling vehicle on the i-Mid display.

City-Brake Active System**
Specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents. City-Brake Active is a laser radar system that scans the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk of collision is detected. The system operates at low speeds (19 mph and below).

Adaptive Cruise Control
This system allows you to choose both your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead. If this falls below the set level, the system instantly decelerates the vehicle. Where quicker deceleration is required ACC will alert the driver to apply the brakes.

Collision Mitigation Braking System**
This system monitors the following distance and closing rate between your vehicle and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact speed when a collision becomes unavoidable.

*Available on selected Grades
** City-Brake Active System and Collision Mitigation Braking System/Adaptive Cruise Control are not available in conjunction with each other

NSX Concept II
The Honda NSX Concept II showcases the evolution of the next generation supercar’s styling and design and was first shown in Europe at the Geneva Motor show earlier this year.

The exterior design stays remarkably true to the original concept, maintaining its low and wide stance with the dynamic proportions that are highlighted by clean, modern and simple surfacing, and edgy details that communicate supercar attitude and a high-tech feel.

The NSX Concept offers a glimpse at a potential direction for the next-generation NSX’s interior design. The interior package boasts outstanding visibility, a strong driving position, and an intuitive “Simple Sports Interface” that minimises interior clutter, allowing the driver to focus on the driving experience. Consistent with the spirit of the original NSX, Honda’s designers have strived to deliver synergy between man and machine.

With the aim of delivering a new sports car experience that combines supercar dynamic capabilities with advanced environmental performance, the NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Honda’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system which is part of Earth Dreams Technology series and maximises the overall drive train efficiency, reaffirming Honda’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions.

SEAT announces pricing for UK Specified Leon ST

  • Leon ST only £825 more than Leon five-door, model-for-model
  • Price premium represents amazing value – significantly lower than that of most rivals
  • Prices for Leon ST start at just £16,675 RRP OTR
  • Open for ordering 1 October 2013, with first deliveries expected January 2014
  • 587-litre boot makes the Leon ST one of the most practical estates in its class, as well as being the best value

On the day that SEAT officially unveils the new Leon ST to the world, at the 65th Frankfurt Motor Show, the company can announce full UK pricing for the car.

Starting at just £16,675, the Leon ST is only £825 more than an equivalent five-door version, making it exceptional value. That’s especially the case because of the practicality it offers, with its 587-litre boot one of the biggest in its class – and bigger than plenty from the class above, too.

On sale 1 October, with first deliveries expected early January 2014, the Leon ST demonstrates that big is beautiful, matching head-turning looks with outstanding luggage-carrying capacity; its boot not only stretches to a whopping 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded, but also boasts a number of thoughtful practicality flourishes that make easy to live with day-to-day.

These include handles on the side walls of the boot that allow the rear seats to fold flat with a simple tug, and a lower lip that sits flush with the twin boot floor, easing the effort of getting heavy or bulky items in. (Standard on SE and FR cars.)

Every Leon ST comes with roof rails as standard, a double-floor setup in the boot, a rear reading light, and a 12V socket. In addition, a through hatch allows loading of long, thin items, while buyers can choose an optional fold-down passenger seat, for even greater load-lugging capacity.

The engine and trim range of the Leon ST is as per the five-door and SC variants, meaning an S-SE-FR hierarchy, with petrol engines ranging from the 1.2 TSI 105 PS, through the 1.4 TSI 140 PS and on to the most powerful 1.8 TSI 180 PS. On the diesel front, there are now two versions of the 1.6 TDI – a standard 105 PS variant, and the just-announced 110 PS Ecomotive. Following those are the 2.0 TDI units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS. A range of transmissions are available, from a five- or six-speed manual to a six- or seven-speed DSG automatic.

In line with a July inflationary price increase across the entire SEAT model line-up, the company is raising Leon five-door and SC prices by £180 (1%), effective from 1 October 2013. The £825 price premium of the Leon ST takes these changes into account.

  • Suzuki reveals the “iV-4”
  • Central development theme, “Grab your field”
  • A new proposal from the compact SUV pioneer

Suzuki is pleased to announce that the world premiere of its new compact SUV concept model, the iV-4, will take place at the 65th IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013.

Since launching the LJ series in 1970, Suzuki has expanded its SUV line-up with the Vitara in 1988, Jimny in 1998, and Grand Vitara in 2005. As a compact SUV pioneer, Suzuki introduces the iV-4, a concept model that embodies a new automotive idea: the personal compact SUV.

Development concept

Under the "Grab your field" concept, iV-4 is heir to Suzuki’s DNA in sports utility vehicles (SUV). It’s set apart by its powerful exterior design, which taps into the tradition of Suzuki’s compact SUVs. And it’s every bit as tough and rugged as an SUV should be, truly empowering its user to "Grab your field". This concept model is designed to be personalised, so that customers can turn it into a car which is just right for them and their lifestyle. “i” stands for “individuality”, “V” for “vehicle”, and “4” for “4 wheel-drive”.

Design features

Faithful to Suzuki’s traditional SUV design – straight, sleek lines, clamshell hood, five-slotted front grille – yet with a futuristic feel imparted by touches such as the distinctive kicked-up character lines on the sides, the fog light with built-in laser sensor on the roof, and the illuminated grille.

Large-diameter tyres and wheel design give a foretaste of the powerful road performance of an SUV.
Can be personalised through customers’ individual choice of exterior parts, colour, texture, etc.

The specially created exterior colour is Brilliant Turquoise Metallic, evocative of the sky reflected in a skyscraper. It makes a striking impression with its intense gleam and brightness.
Dimensions of the iV4

  • Overall length   4,215 (mm)
  • Overall width    1,850 (mm)
  • Overall height   1,665 (mm)
  • Wheelbase       2,500 (mm)
  • Tyre size           235/55R20

Plans for production model

The production model based on the iV-4 aims to be an SUV for the present day: light in weight and boasting among the lowest CO2 emissions in its class. And besides being eco-friendly, the four-wheel drive model will come equipped with ALLGRIP, the next generation of 4WD technology, in order to deliver the powerful drive the user expect of an SUV. It will thus offer a combination of design and off-road performance that goes beyond a typical city SUV.

Suzuki will start launching the production model, based on this iV-4 concept model, at Magyar Suzuki in 2015 and will be releasing it in Europe.

Suzuki history on the SUV market

Suzuki is the pioneer of the compact SUV. Since launching the LJ in 1970 and the SJ series in the 1980s, the company has put a great deal of effort into developing off-road models such as Vitara, Jimny and Grand Vitara.

Back in 1970, the off-road market was dominated by vehicles with huge engines, but Suzuki challenged them with a mini car that delivers the ultimate in off-road performance by combining a high reduction ratio with a lightweight body weighing in at just 600 kilograms. With the launch of the SJ series, which with its elegant straight lines heralded the arrival of the stylish-looking four-wheel drive model, Suzuki also succeeded in winning over female drivers.

In 1988 the Vitara was launched, combining a sturdy ladder frame with a classy-looking European-style body characterised by straight lines. It offered good handling thanks to its elegantly simple suspension with MacPherson struts for the front axle and a centre wishbone for the rear axle.

Then, in 1998, a complete overhaul was made of the LJ and SJ series to create a more modern look and the Jimny was subsequently launched. It was a truly revolutionary model, featuring a longer wheelbase and redesigned ladder frame with air locking wheel hubs installed for the first time.

The Jimny continues to sell well 15 years later, thanks to its many devoted fans ranging from female city dwellers to hunting aficionados.

The Vitara, for its part, was reincarnated as the Grand Vitara, the harbinger of the coming crossover era, which offered great on-road performance without sacrificing off-road capability.

In 2005 the Grand Vitara underwent a full model change. The performance of the suspension was maximised by using a built-in ladder frame and both on and off-road capabilities were enhanced further. In addition, a four wheel drive system with four modes was adopted from this model.

Suzuki’s SUV expertise, developed through long years of tradition in the sector has been harnessed in our crossover models as well. It has ensured the success of the SX4 and is evident everywhere in the new SX4 S-Cross, which is about to go on sale.

When the production model based on the iV-4 is launched in the future, Suzuki will be introducing completely new possibilities into the SUV segment.
