Top ten table

2013 was a brilliant year for the UK motor industry, with each month bettering the previous year, and with the financial crisis on its turnaround, lower unemployment, higher exports and the continued national Interest rate still at its historic low, car sales have been very buoyant for some while, it is then that we wondered if 2014 could better 2013, and if this month is any thing to go by, yes it can, with 154,562 sales in January, it surpassed 2013 by nearly 10,000 units or the entire run of Fiesta sales.

Unfortunately for us here Jaguar Land Rover (our favourite brands) both suffered significant drops in Jan' which considering they both have new metal they did not have at the same point last year is a sad state of affairs, however, both brands are going to have a very busy two years ahead with at least eight new cars either due or revealed the signs are looking bright for the British brands.

Vauxhall, considering the amount of new cars and engines they have suffered a huge 18.4% drop, it seems that the zero finance and lifetime warranties are not enticing buyers as much as they had hoped, of this carries on expect to see some terrific deals of UK made Astra's and the recently launched face-lifted Insignia, both cars deserve to sell better than they do, especially as the ageing Corsa outsells them both, talking of the Corsa, it is due for replacement imminently, so expect to see news of that shortly.

It is not often we talk of Bentley, but it has to be noted they nearly doubled January sales, 155 were sold this year 80 last, this is great news for the Crewe Company, and goes to show that quality and luxury can sell, even in the hardest of times. Lotus increased sales by 300%, now that sounds a lot doesn't it, but it was a case of 4 sales in '13 and 16 now, so I think we will just say 300%, it does sound so much better.

I have been very harsh about MG over the last 12 months, but credit where credit is due, they have sold over 130 cars in January that's 345% up on last year, so it seems that the little MG3 is selling, but not in the numbers MG led everyone to believe last year, when they apparently had 700 cars shipped to the UK and they sold the lot, meaning a long wait for new cars, but sales have not been much higher than last months, and only since November, so, where are these cars and sales ? Maybe MG will answer this question ?

Other mentions for January are Dacia, up nearly 350% on Jan last year, Honda down 14% and Chrysler down 19%, Aston Martin down 50%, Ssangyong up 235%, Maserati up 152% and Infiniti up 312%, so some serious percentage figures, but low sales numbers in some cases, but an increase is as increase, and that's just what our industry needs, more sales, more exports and better deals, these are all out there, with come HUGE discounts to be had if you take the time to look.

Birth of the AUDI RS marked by commemorative RS 4 Avant NOGARO selection.

  • Anniversary model based on the Audi Avant RS2
  • Audi RS 4 Avant Nogaro selection to celebrate world premiere in Geneva

It is almost exactly twenty years since the once clearly defined boundary between versatile estate car and extreme sports car was blurred by the Audi Avant RS2, so the trailblazer for a high-performance breed which continues to flourish is being commemorated by the new RS 4 Avant Nogaro selection. The new special edition will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show with Nogaro blue paint finish and exclusive equipment.

The customised Nogaro blue, pearl effect paint finish is the most immediately apparent tribute to the esteemed RS2 in the anniversary model. In addition, the frame of the Singleframe grille and the window surrounds are painted high-gloss black, and the roof rails matt black. The RS sports exhaust system terminates in two oval, high-gloss black tailpipe trims.

450PS: the high-revving V8

Under the bonnet of the Audi RS 4 Avant Nogaro selection sits a high-revving V8 naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 4,163 cc. The 4.2 FSI delivers 450PS of power at 8,250 rpm, with peak torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The resonant eight-cylinder engine powers the anniversary model from 0 to 62mph in 4.7 seconds and takes it to a governed top speed of 174mph. Its combined fuel economy is 26.4mpg – for a CO2 equivalent of 249 grams per kilometre.

With its high efficiency and tall top gear, the standard seven-speed S tronic also contributes to fuel efficiency. The driver can let the lightning-fast dual-clutch transmission shift operate automatically or change gears themselves using the selector lever or the steering wheel paddles.

The core of the quattro permanent all-wheel drive is the self-locking crown gear centre differential. The compact and lightweight component distributes torque at a default ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axles. This ratio can be broadly varied as required – with up to 70 per cent of the power going to the front and a maximum of 85 per cent to the rear. The crown gear centre differential cooperates with the wheel-selective torque control, which makes handling at cornering limits even more dynamic through selective, small brake impulses. At the rear, the standard sport differential also actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

The Audi RS 4 Avant Nogaro selection rides on 265/30 series tyres. Behind the gloss turned finish 20-inch wheels in 5-V-spoke design gleam red-painted brake calipers bearing RS emblems. The brake discs featuring a wave design are internally ventilated, perforated and joined to the aluminium brake disc chambers by pins. Carbon-fibre-ceramic front discs are available at extra cost. The Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC) offers a sport mode and can also be entirely deactivated as required.

Black and blue: the interior

In the purposefully styled interior, Audi offers two different upholstery versions for the electrically adjustable S sport seats with their integrated head restraints. In both cases, the side sections are covered with black Valcona leather; the Alcantara trim for the centre sections and door trim inserts are coloured either black as well or Nogaro blue – in homage again to the Audi Avant RS2. The armrests are covered with black leather, with blue contrasting stitching providing accents. Black or Nogaro blue piping frames the black floor mats.

Black leather with blue stitching also refines the steering wheel rim and the selector lever boot. Blue threads run through the carbon inlays. A badge on the RS selector lever knob of the S tronic and the logos on the door sill trims refer to the special status of the anniversary model.

The Audi RS 4 Avant Nogaro selection will be available in mainland Europe later in 2014 as a limited edition. The possibility of UK specification production is still under discussion.

A modern classic: the Audi Avant RS2 from 1994

The Audi RS2 of 1994 was the first RS model from Audi and also the first high-performance model from the brand to combine full everyday suitability with a dynamic character, becoming the founder of a whole family of peformance-focused models. Audi developed the RS2 in conjunction with Porsche, with assembly taking place at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

Its appearance alone was indicative of the power of the first RS model. The front bumper featured powerful air inlets, and the grille was painted black. The exterior mirrors came from Porsche, the rear was embellished by a full-width band of light, and the emblems were large-sized. The RS2 optionally left the assembly line with an exclusive Nogaro blue paint finish, recalling the two victories achieved by Frank Biela on the Nogaro circuit in the French Touring Car Championship of 1993.

The engine drew on Audi’s extensive experience in touring car racing. The 2.2-litre five-cylinder engine delivered 315PS by way of a large turbocharger, high boost pressure, expanded air ducting and adapted engine management. At 3,000 rpm 410 Nm (302.40 lb-ft) of torque was available, with the limiter only taking effect at 7,200 rpm. The RS2 accelerated from 0 to 62mph in 5.4 seconds and reached a top speed of 162mph. A six-speed manual transmission delivered the power to the quattro drivetrain, which had a manually activated locking differential at the rear axle.

The suspension with its all-round transverse links was derived from the set-up of the performance car which laid the foundations, the Audi S2. The shock absorbers were even firmer and the springs were shortened. Porsche supplied the 17-inch wheels, the large, internally ventilated brake discs and the red-painted four-piston calipers.

The interior was dominated by Silk Nappa leather and Alcantara in the colour anthracite, blue or silver grey, and the Recaro seats were electrically adjustable. The instruments bore white dials, while small indicators on the centre console kept the driver informed about the oil pressure, oil temperature and vehicle system voltage. CFRP inlays were optionally available.

Audi offered the RS2 at a base price of £39,500 in the UK. Within a construction period of barely two years 2,908 units were produced – more than the quantity originally planned.

Kia Launches Soul and Optima Hybrids at Chicago Auto Show

  • Soul EV is Kia’s first mass-market electric vehicle
  • Offers realistic range of 80-100 miles
  • Set for sale in the UK late this year
  • Optima gets additional aerodynamic and technology enhancements

Kia Motors has unveiled its first ever mass-production electric vehicle, the Soul EV at the Chicago Auto Show.

Set to go on sale in the United States market in third quarter of 2014 and in Europe and the UK after that, the Soul EV will be Kia’s first all-electric, zero-emissions car sold in the U.S. and expands the brand’s line of environmentally conscious vehicles.  The Soul EV joined the refreshed Optima Hybrid illustrating Kia’s intent to lead the industry in providing technologically advanced vehicles that also reduce dependency on non-renewable resources.

Kia’s eco-friendly commitment was further underscored when UL (Underwriters Laboratories) 2 honoured the Soul EV with the organization’s first automotive environmental validation for its integration of more than 20 bio-friendly materials.

High Energy Density Battery and Usable Power

A top concern for EV buyers has commonly been range anxiety.  The Soul EV addresses this issue by utilizing a highly energy-dense lithium-ion polymer battery.  Located beneath the floor, the 27kWh, air-cooled, 200 watt-hour/kg battery is expected to yield a range of approximately 80-100 miles of real-world driving on a full charge, with internal testing and evaluation results exceeding 100 miles in some instances.

The 360 volt 96-cell lithium-ion polymer battery has been engineered for high capacity, thermal stability and safety.  Accordingly, the battery features a nickel-cobalt-manganese cathode, which helps increase capacity, and a graphite-based anode, which increases durability while reducing weight.  Additionally, the cells use a gel electrolyte, and each cell contains ceramic separators to significantly improve thermal stability and safety.

In an effort to maximize efficiency and range, the Soul EV uses Kia’s third-generation regenerative braking system to capture up to 12 percent of the car’s kinetic energy, which is fed back into the battery while the Soul EV is coasting and braking.  Soul EV owners can choose between four different regeneration modes: “Drive” or “Brakes” modes in Eco-mode “Off,” and “Drive” or “Brakes” modes in Eco-mode “On” (the “Brakes” setting with Eco-mode “On” producing the most regeneration).

The Soul EV makes charging easy by plugging into any standard 120v outlet or a conventional 240v EV charger.  Two charging ports are standard, including a SAE J1772 port for Level 1 and Level 2 AC, and a CHAdeMo DC fast-charging port (480v).  Found behind a sliding door located in the front grille, the dual ports offer flexibility and increase the Soul EV’s go-anywhere appeal, making it more convenient to charge inside the owner’s garage or when on the road.  Recharging times vary from 24 hours for a fully depleted battery using a standard 120-volt outlet and under five hours when plugged into a 240-volt outlet.  An 80-percent charge can be achieved in as little as 33 minutes with a 50 kW-output charger.

Kia has partnered with three charger providers – Bosch, Leviton and AeroVironment™ – which give Soul EV buyers an opportunity to select the unit best suited to their in-home needs.

The front-wheel drive Soul EV is powered by an 81.4 kW, 109-hp electric motor, producing a generous 210 lb.-ft. of torque.  The liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet motor uses multi-layer magnets to help improve efficiency and reduce the whine that’s commonly experienced with other electric vehicles.

The motor delivers its power to the front wheels through a single-speed constant-ratio gear reduction unit.  Acceleration from 0-60 mph is expected to take fewer than 12 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to approximately 90 mph. The battery’s location beneath the floor offers the stable feel of a lower centre of gravity, which helps ride and handling and ensures that the EV remains true to the Soul’s fun-to-drive reputation.  Additional cross bracing beneath the low-mounted battery contributes to a 5.9 percent improvement in torsional rigidity over the petrol or diesel-powered Souls.

Improved aerodynamics and the absence of engine noise, combined with special sound-proofing materials, result in an exceptionally quiet ride.  For the benefit of pedestrian safety, the Soul EV is equipped with a Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS) that emits an auditory alert at speeds below 12 mph and whenever the car is in reverse.

Minimal Battery Intrusion

The Soul EV offers plenty of space inside the cabin thanks to minimal battery intrusion.  Because of the battery’s flat design and location beneath the floor, there is only a slight 3.1-inch reduction to rear seat leg room (from 39.1 to 36 inches) from the non-EV Soul, yet Soul EV still offers more rear seat leg room than other key EV competitors.  Rear shoulder and hip room remain unchanged from the petrol and diesel-powered Souls, making Soul EV one of the roomiest in the segment.  Rear luggage space is minimally impacted (reduced 5.1 cu.-ft. to 19.1) as the space under the boot floor is utilized for the battery cooling fan and storage of the standard 120v portable charger.

Uniquely Designed Inside and Out

The Soul’s bold exterior design is also found on the EV.  From the “floating” roof to the greenhouse that makes the car look like it is wearing wraparound sunglasses, the EV’s look is inspired by the 2012 Kia Track’ster concept and retains the iconic square-shouldered broad stance of the original Soul.

Initially, the Soul EV will be offered in three colour choices: Pearl White lower body with Electronic Blue roof, Caribbean Blue lower body with Clear White roof, and Bright Silver with Clear White roof.  The signature two-tone paint theme is exclusive to the EV and was inspired by a similar treatment seen on the Track’ster.

The EV-exclusive front-end features a larger grille to accommodate the charging ports, and other unique exterior Soul EV design features include colour accent trim in the front and rear panels, projector headlights, LED positioning lamps, and LED tail lights.  “Eco Electric” badging replaces the “Soul” badging found on the diesel and petrol-powered cars, and the Soul EV gets its own set of distinctive 16-inch alloy wheels wrapped with specially engineered Super Low Rolling Resistance (SLRR) tires that offer 10 percent less resistance than standard low rolling resistance tyres, helping to improve range.

Revised Optima Hybrid

The Optima Hybrid builds upon the advancements of the previous version of the car.

Debuting with its own exclusive enhancements, including front and rear fascia updates designed to increase aerodynamic efficiency, new wheel designs, and unique grille and lighting elements, the Optima Hybrid improves upon its predecessor, which was named one of the “Top 11 Most Fuel-Efficient Sedans for 2013” by Edmunds.com. in the USA.

Design Enhancements for Better Fuel Efficiency

The dynamic and sporty design upgrades on the gasoline-powered 2014 Optima are retooled for the Hybrid to increase fuel efficiency.  Contributing to improved aerodynamics is a series of additional vents in the Optima Hybrid’s unique front bumper, increasing airflow and reducing drag.

Newly designed and more aerodynamic 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels (LX and EX, respectively) reduce weight and drag while superbly integrating with the Optima’s eye-catching new design elements.

In addition to those elements designed with fuel efficiency in mind, the revised Optima Hybrid also boasts a unique new front grille design, Hybrid-exclusive front LED lighting, new Hybrid badging and an attractive and upscale optional white leather package.

There are no plans to bring the Optima Hybrid to the UK market

The new BMW X3 reinforces the model’s position as the class leader

The new BMW X3 reinforces the model’s position as the class leader, with an unbeatable combination of driving dynamics, style, efficiency and practicality.

Thanks to BMW’s new generation of TwinPower Turbo diesel engines, excellent performance is available across the entire range, and yet both fuel economy and CO2 emissions have seen further improvements with remarkable results.  As an example of this engineering prowess the BMW X3 sDrive18d achieves a combined fuel consumption figure and CO2 emissions of 60.1mpg and 124g/km. Meanwhile, the opposite end of the range, the new xDrive35d can reach 152mph flat out and sprint to 62mph from rest in just 5.3 seconds, while still achieving over 47mpg.

The new BMW X3 can be identified by careful revisions to its expressive styling, new colours, and revisions to the interior design and trim options. All models now feature an increase in the amount of standard equipment, while customers can also choose a new xLine model to further personalise their X3.

Design and functionality

The new BMW X3 is immediately identifiable as a member of the successful BMW X family, and possesses a striking presence on the road. Aside from its length, which has grown by a single centimetre, it has the same compact, usable dimensions of its successful predecessor.

However, the new BMW X3 features a host of design changes. At the front end, new twin circular headlights – available in optional full LED specification along with optional LED front fog lamps – combine with the prominent BMW kidney grille and its new surround. Both the front and rear bumpers have gained new contours, while the LED indicators are now housed in the new exterior mirrors. Four new exterior paint shades and five new light-alloy wheel designs broaden the scope for individualisation.

Inside, the new BMW X3 remains a compelling proposition, with its carefully selected materials, understated chrome applications, a centre console with optional automatic climate control system (with high-gloss black panel) and wood panelling with pearl chrome highlights. New cupholders, with a sliding cover, can be found in the centre console, and a leather steering wheel is amongst the standard equipment. Customers can also choose from four new upholstery colours and four new interior trims. The new BMW X3 continues to lead the way in its segment in terms of both interior spaciousness and rear load capacity, offering 550 litres with the seats up and 1,600 litres with the seats folded.

New xLine joins SE and M Sport variants

The new BMW X3 is available in SE, xLine and M Sport trim levels. SE models already have an extensive standard equipment list including Nevada leather upholstery, two-zone air conditioning, Cruise control, DAB radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear PDC, Drive Performance Control, Rain sensor and automatic headlights.  This has now been increased with the inclusion of the BMW Business navigation system, heated front seats and an automatic tailgate.

Moreover, an optional new SE Plus package adds Harman-kardon loudspeakers, Sun protection glass, Adaptive Headlights, High-beam Assistant and a one-inch increase in alloy wheel size for an additional £2,850.

The new xLine models can be identified from the outside by gleaming metallic inserts in the bumpers, Satin Aluminium side cladding and bars in the air intakes, simulated underguards at the front and rear and exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the new model features exclusive xLine leather upholstery, Dark Copper trim and a Sport leather steering wheel. Nevertheless, xLine variants command only a £1,500 price premium over the SE model.

For those customers looking to further boost the superb dynamic qualities of the new BMW X3 there is the M Sport variant. These models feature M aerodynamic styling and BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim to maximise the car’s sporting presence, along with newly upgraded 19-inch light alloy wheels (previously 18-inch). Inside, there’s a BMW Individual rooflining in Anthracite, Sport seats, M Sport leather steering wheel and Aluminium Hexagon trim; technical highlights include Performance Control and M Sport suspension. M Sport models carry a further £1,500 price premium over the xLine variants.

An additional new package is also now available; M Sport Plus. This adds a new 20-inch M Sport bi-colour alloy wheel, Xenon headlights, Sun protection glass and Harman-kardon loudspeakers for £2,920.

A range of other innovative options adds further to the functionality of the new X3. The Comfort Access with smart-opener, for instance, makes accessing the load compartment that much easier; a short movement of the foot below the rear bumper causes it to open or close the tailgate automatically. A storage package including a reversible floor section, folding box, partition elements and a range of different luggage nets allows objects of any kind to be stowed away easily, safely and tidily. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats enables maximum flexibility. The optional auxiliary heating system guarantees a pleasant on-board climate at all times, even in wintry conditions.

Powertrain: cutting edge diesel engines with excellent economy and low emissions.

The new BMW X3 features an all-turbo-diesel line-up, using the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology to ensure outstanding performance combined with minimised fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. All of the engines meet EU6 regulations as standard.

The new-generation, all-aluminium, 2.0-litre diesel engines use common-rail direct injection with solenoid valve injectors and work with increased injection pressure of 2,000bar. This pushes the output of the X3 xDrive20d from 184hp up to 190hp, with the maximum torque available also rising from 380 to 400Nm. The increase in performance cuts the zero to 62mph acceleration time by 0.4 seconds to just 8.1 seconds. At the same time, the fuel consumption of the X3 xDrive20d, when partnered with the eight-speed automatic gearbox, drops by 7.1 per cent compared to the outgoing model, and CO2 emissions are down to only 138g/km.

Furthermore, with a new optional 17-inch aero wheel and fourth-generation reduced-rolling-resistance tyres, CO2 emissions are cut by a further 7g/km. In this configuration, the X3 xDrive20d – in which the new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine premieres – delivers class-leading figures: fuel consumption is just 56.5mpg with CO2 emissions of only 131g/km.

The new 150hp X3 sDrive18d, with rear-wheel-drive, a six-speed manual gearbox and reduced rolling resistance tyres, is even more frugal. The optional 17-inch aero alloy wheel records the lowest fuel consumption, just 60.1mpg, and CO2 emissions, at 124g/km, of any model in this market segment.

The range-topping variants of the new BMW X3 are powered by further developed versions of BMW’s much lauded 3.0-litre, six-cylinder in-line, turbo-diesel engine. The X3 xDrive30d delivers sparking performance, with zero to 62mph taking just 5.9 seconds, and yet achieves a combined fuel consumption of 47.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 156g/km. It develops 258hp with a peak torque of 560Nm.

The flagship model in the range is the X3 xDrive35d, offering an impressive 313hp and up to 630Nm of torque. Reaching 62mph from rest in just 5.3 seconds it has a combined fuel consumption of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 157g/km – both reduced over the outgoing X3.

Two- or four-wheel drive.

The BMW X3 18d is available in sDrive form, while all other models come with xDrive as standard. The intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system delivers optimum traction, with power sent where it is most needed, further improving on-road dynamics and driving safety. In models equipped with xDrive, a new xDrive status display (featuring three-dimensional graphics) in the Control Display keeps the driver informed of the car’s body roll and pitch, while a compass display is also shown in the instrument cluster.

Depending on the engine variant specified, the new BMW X3 can be ordered with a sporty, precise, six-speed manual gearbox or a highly effective eight-speed automatic (standard on the xDrive30d and xDrive35d), which also allows the driver to change gear using optional shift paddles on the steering wheel. An eight-speed Sport automatic gearbox - with shift paddles included as standard - is also available as an option.

BMW EfficientDynamics

The standard BMW EfficientDynamics package ensures that the driving pleasure available with the new BMW X3 goes hand-in-hand with low emissions and impressive economy. Engines with maximised fuel economy, intelligent lightweight design and optimised aerodynamics combine with the latest-generation Auto Start-Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, Optimum Shift Indicator and on-demand operation of ancillary units to deliver the lowest fuel consumption and emissions figures in the segment.

Moreover, the optional 17-inch aero wheel and fourth-generation reduced rolling resistance tyres shave another 7g/km off the CO2 emissions, and can be ordered for all models except the xDrive35d.

Safety, comfort and infotainment, with BMW ConnectedDrive

With the new BMW X3, BMW ConnectedDrive continues at the forefront of technology to link-up the driver, the car and the outside world. Among the outstanding new features is the latest, enhanced-capability generation of the Professional Multimedia navigation, complete with ECO PRO route guidance and an iDrive Touch Controller with integrated touchpad. The touchpad allows drivers or passengers to use their finger to write letters for text inputs such as a navigation destination, for example.

Another highlight is the full-colour Head-up Display, which projects all-important driving information and the assistance systems displays into the driver’s field of view.

Among the other systems available are the anti-dazzle High-beam Assistant and Driving Assistant Plus, which includes features such as Lane Departure Warning and preventive pedestrian protection, plus Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. An aide to comfort and convenience, meanwhile, is the Surround-view camera systems, which provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle for when parking or manoeuvring. BMW ConnectedDrive Services & Apps also make mobility services and smartphone applications available inside the car via the central Control Display, and innovations such as Information Plus and RTTI (Real Time Traffic Information) system can also be accessed.

The BMW Emergency Call function is now fitted as standard. This system springs into action automatically (although it can be activated manually) as soon as the crash sensors report an airbag deployment. Emergency Call uses an integrated SIM card to send the car’s exact location along with all key information to the BMW call centre, enabling rapid and effective assistance at the scene of the accident.

The new BMW X3 goes on sale in June 2014, priced from £30,990 OTR for an X3 sDrive18d SE.

  • …with a reduced cost of ownership.

MORE DESIGN

The New Citroën C4 Cactus reconciles the characteristics of good looks and functionality, with unique styling that is both memorable and easily identifiable. This is a design that features:

  • Pure, smooth surfaces
  • Flowing lines, free of harsh edges
  • Floating quarter-lights & a floating roof
  • A high-tech light signature with daytime-running LED lights & headlights built into the Airbump® protection at the front
  • Visual features that each highlight a given function – from Airbump® & wheel arch protection to the strong useable roof bars and the large panoramic glazed roof with its advanced heat protection.

Airbump®: A Citroën Exclusive

Airbump® technology neatly sums up the fundamental purpose of design, to combine style and practicality.

Fitted to the sides of the car and the bumpers, Airbump® adds a graphic structure to the pure, smooth bodylines of the New Citroën C4 Cactus. Available in four colours (Black, Grey, Dune & Chocolate), they can be matched with the ten body colours and three choices of interior trim (Stone Grey Ambiance, Habana Highlight & Purple Highlight) to offer a wide range of customisation options.

Above all they provide real day-to-day protection, as the supple TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) skin comprises air capsules to absorb impacts. Airbump® requires no specific maintenance and directly contributes to cutting vehicle repair costs.

The result is an attractive, functional innovation that makes city driving a more relaxing experience.

Dimensions

The proportions of the New Citroën C4 Cactus are optimised for attractive styling, space and driving comfort, boasting:

  • A 2.60m wheelbase (equivalent to a Citroën C4) placing the emphasis on space
  • The dimensions of a compact hatchback (length: 4.16m, width: 1.73m)
  • An ideal profile in terms of styling with 1/3 glazed areas & 2/3 side panels
  • Optimised height of just 1.48m for improved aerodynamics
  • Shorter overhangs placing the wheels in the four corners.

GREATER COMFORT

The first way to provide greater comfort is to create more space for the driver and passengers, and to de-clutter the cabin to provide a friendlier, more relaxing environment.

The low dashboard, with its horizontal lines, creates more space for the front passenger and offers generous and easily accessible storage. This result was achieved by adopting a fully-digital interface and optimising the dashboard layout:

  • ‘Airbag In Roof’ technology – transferring the passenger airbag to the roof & deploying it over the windscreen, rather than positioning it in the dashboard
  • Conventional control buttons replaced by a 7-inch touchscreen, grouping together all the main vehicle functions (including the air conditioning, media, navigation, vehicle settings, telephone, connectivity & driving aids)
  • The traditional instrument cluster replaced by a digital screen
  • On Efficient Tronic Gearbox (ETG) versions, the gear lever is replaced by an ‘Easy Push’ system.

This simplified function comprises a ‘Drive, Neutral, Reverse’ (D,N,R) selection control on the lower fascia and steering wheel paddles to allow the driver to change gears manually.

The driver and front passenger both gain from this new interior architecture. The wide front seats are designed in the style of a sofa, to create a more comfortable and user-friendly ambience in the cabin.

In the rear, passenger legroom is similar to that of the Citroën C4. With an equivalent wheelbase, New C4 Cactus provides the same amount of space, but with more compact exterior dimensions. At just 4.16m long – for easy driving and handling in the city – the New Citroën C4 Cactus also provides generous boot capacity of 358-litres.

The second way to enhance comfort is through the on-board environment, which should be both relaxed and elegant. The clean design lines of the cabin underpin the interior styling, while the overall effect evokes the theme of travel, with a nod to the world of luggage design, including:

  • Door handles that take the form of luggage inspired leather straps
  • A storage compartment on the top part of the dashboard, with hinge fittings & a relief pattern
  • Seat upholstery, door trim & dashboard in a choice of three colours; Stone Grey, Purple Highlight & Habana Highlight

MORE USEFUL TECHNOLOGY

With a focus on ease of use, connectivity and accessibility, the technologies featured on the New Citroën C4 Cactus focus on the real needs of today’s motorists.

A fully digital & intuitive touchscreen interface

Fitted as standard, a 7-inch touchscreen featuring seven main control buttons gives access to a full range of modern vehicle functions, including:

  • Automatic air conditioning
  • Media (digital radio, audio streaming, connection of mobile devices & functions to store music or display photos)
  • Navigation (speed limit display, traffic updates & efficient route options)
  • Driving aids (reversing camera, Park Assist, programmable speed limiter & cruise control)
  • Telephone (hands-free function via Bluetooth®, phonebook access, display of profile photos & double call management)
  • Connected services (Citroën Multicity Connect portal via a 3G connection)
  • Parameter settings (including an interactive on-board manual).

All these controls are grouped on a single screen, ensuring they are always easily accessible.

Amongst the useful technologies is the Citroën Multicity Connect application portal. Controlled from the 7-inch touchscreen, this portal offers a range of apps designed to making life easier for all occupants. Applications include:

  • ‘Fuel’ app, allowing motorists to find the nearest and/or cheapest service station
  • ‘Yellow Pages’ & ‘Trip Advisor’ apps, which help to locate hotels & restaurants
  • ‘Michelin Traffic’ app, providing live traffic information
  • ‘Coyote’ app, providing alerts on high-risk roads

All applications are fully integrated with the driving interface, taking account of all vehicle-related information (position, speed, route, fuel level, etc.), to provide the right information at the right time and anticipating driver needs in all circumstances.

100% useful driving aids

For a more relaxed drive, the New Citroën C4 Cactus features a range of driving aids to make life easier:

  • Park Assist carries out parking manoeuvres automatically when a suitable space has been identified.
  • The driver only needs to operate the accelerator & brake
  • A reversing camera makes light work of parking manoeuvres with the image displayed on the touchscreen, providing greater visibility
  • Hill-Start Assist keeps the vehicle stationary for two seconds on a slope, allowing the driver to easily proceed on gradients of over 3% without the vehicle dropping back when the brake pedal is released
  • Static cornering lights provide an additional beam of light to illuminate the inside of bends, improving visibility & safety at corners & junctions
  • The Citroën eTouch service includes a localised emergency & assistance call system, depending on the country. These two 24/7 services are free for the life of the vehicle and feature an integrated SIM card. In the event of an incident or accident, they ensure that the emergency services can locate & reach the vehicle promptly.

Technological Innovations for increased comfort

The New Citroën C4 Cactus boasts a large panoramic sunroof featuring advanced heat protection (the best available on the market), designed to filter light and reflect heat. With protection equivalent to category-4 sunglasses, the sunroof provides effective protection from UV rays, while excellent light, heat and acoustic protection eliminates the need to fit a sunblind. As a result, vehicle weight is reduced by 6kg and weight distribution is also improved – the centre of gravity is lowered for a more balanced ride.

Driving comfort is further enhanced, thanks to ‘Smart Wash’ – a simple, ingenious innovation, removing visibility issues caused by washing the windscreen. With this technology, windscreen washer nozzles are built into the tips of the wipers and release just a small amount of fluid. This helps to maintain visibility and also halves the amount of fluid required compared to a conventional system.

REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP

While delivering more of what really counts for customers, the ownership proposition with the New C4 Cactus needed to be one that remained affordable. A vehicle budget includes not only the purchase price, but also the running costs (fuel, servicing, etc.) and Citroën’s objective was to deliver an all-round cost-effective solution.

Supporting customers from purchase through to resale

Adopting an approach similar to mobile phone price plans, Citroën brings New C4 Cactus customers a range of funding options in the form of a monthly flat-rate or mileage-based payment, depending on the country.

This innovative service covers all expenditure, excluding fuel, during the period of the agreement: finance, insurance and servicing. For a fixed monthly payment, customers can select their preferred trim level (equipment, engine, etc.) and the level of service they require (type of cover, all-in or mileage based, etc.) without exceeding their budget.

Cutting fuel consumption

To reduce fuel consumption it is important to increase efficiency and to do away with the superfluous. By making the vehicle lighter, Citroën has been able to adopt smaller latest-generation engines, which reduce fuel consumption whilst maximising driveability.

The New Citroën C4 Cactus weighs just 965kg, 200kg less overall compared with a Citroën C4, a reduction achieved thanks to:

  • A compact, lightweight platform
  • Small latest-generation engines meeting the future Euro 6 standard (PureTech petrol & BlueHDi diesel with Stop & Start)
  • High-performance materials including very high yield-strength steel & aluminium front & rear beams
  • Weight-reducing features such as an aluminium bonnet, pop-out rear windows (-11kg) & a single-piece folding rear bench (-6kg)
  • As a result, the New Citroën C4 Cactus is available with a petrol version emitting less than 100g/km of CO2 and a diesel version emitting just 82g/km with impressive fuel consumption of 91.1mpg.

Breakthrough reductions in cost of ownership

Looking beyond fuel consumption, Citroën has reduced the overall running costs of the New C4 Cactus by almost 20% compared with the benchmark in the compact hatchback segment. As a result of the efforts made to optimise weight, the need to replace wear parts due to normal wear and tear has been significantly reduced. Repair costs are also considerably lower, thanks to Citroën’s Airbump® technology.

Three new engines are set to bolster the UK S-Class line up to a total of 11 different models.

The S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid L AMG Line, S 600 L AMG Line and S 65 AMG L will be available from April 2014 production, extending the range to now include the first diesel hybrid engine in the segment with class-leading economy, through to the ultimate in refinement, power and performance in the form of the S 65 AMG.

The S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid L AMG Line is the second engine for the S-Class Hybrid offering (alongside the S 400 Hybrid L), and is from the same engine family as the successful E 300 BlueTEC Hybrid, with a 2.2 litre, four-cylinder diesel engine joined by a 27 hp electric motor. With a combined fuel consumption of 61.4 mpg and CO2 from 120g/km, the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid sets a new efficiency benchmark in the segment and is available from £72,260 OTR.

In addition, standard equipment across the entire S-Class range, including the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid, from March 2014 features an innovative touchpad system that allows control of COMAND Online using single or multiple-finger gestures, and new optional features include the new Head-up Display, which provides the driver with key information at a glance without having to take their eyes off the road, and heated windscreen.

For the two V12 models, the S 600 L AMG Line and the S 65 AMG L, they represent the ultimate levels of standard equipment. Key features include: Executive Rear Package and Rear Seat Reclining Package for backrest adjustment to 43.5 degrees; Rear Seat Comfort Package including Rear Seat Entertainment; Front Seat Comfort Package; Exclusive nappa Leather Package; Burmester 3D High End Surround Sound system; and Keyless-Go Package to include remote boot closing and hands-free access.

In addition, the full Driving Assistance Package to include driver aids like Active Blind Spot Assist and Distronic Plus with Steer Assist and So & Go Pilot, is standard. Magic Body Control, Night View Assist Plus, Warmth Comfort Package, Intelligent Rear Seat Belt Package, garage door opener, TV tuner and rear seat telephony are further examples to add to the superior levels of equipment for the S 600 L AMG Line and S 65 AMG L.

In fact, only a few selectable options remain for the 12-cylinder models besides the paint, upholstery and trim choices, including the Individual Rear Seats Package (£2,900) and a refrigerated compartment behind the rear armrest (£1,130).

The S 600 L AMG Line, priced from £139,960 OTR offers a 13 hp increase over the previous S 600 model to 530 hp, with 830 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Emissions are reduced by 21 per cent to 259 g/km with a 27 per cent improvement in combined fuel consumption to 25.5 mpg.

The impressive figures continue with the S 65 AMG L, which is priced from £179,960 OTR. The 630 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque help to propel the S 65 AMG L from 0 to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds – a 0.1 second improvement over the previous S 65 AMG L. In addition, there is a 16 per cent decrease in CO2 emissions to 279 g/km and a 20 per cent improvement in combined fuel consumption to 23.7 mpg.

Vauxhall launches new super smooth and quiet 1.6L Diesel engine in Astra range

  • New 1.6 CDTi offers outstanding refinement and economy
  • Low 97g/km CO2 emissions and up to 76.3mpg combined

The top-selling Astra is now available with a super-smooth new generation 1.6 CDTi engine, Vauxhall’s cleanest ever mid-size diesel.

Previously only available on the Zafira Tourer and the Meriva, the new 1.6 CDTi engine is now set to enhance the Astra’s appeal as Vauxhall continues to significantly refresh its powertrain offer.

Unveiled in the Astra at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, the much-lauded new engine is available in two power outputs: 110PS and 136PS, in both hatchback and Sports Tourer body styles.  The 110PS version achieves 76.3mpg combined with CO2 emission of just 97g/km, and 72.4mpg combined and 104g/km in 136PS guise.

Quiet and refined, the new 1.6 CDTi is one of the best engines in its class for noise and vibration thanks to an efficient combustion process with multiple injection, re-designed components and the use of acoustic covers.

Already Euro 6-compliant, the engine is best-in-class in noise and vibration generation thanks to its optimised component design, an especially efficient combustion process with multiple injection.

Not only is the new 1.6 CDTi super-refined, it’s also clean and powerful, too. A high-pressure common rail injection system and lean NOx trap exhaust-after treatment (LNT) improve efficiency, while a variable turbine turbocharger help make the new diesel a strong performer, too.

Vauxhall/Opel have invested over €50 million in the development and optimisation of five and six-speed gear boxes. The six-speed ‘box mated to the 1.6 CDTi features a revised gear change and improved shift quality that is faster, slicker and less effort.

“We are delighted to introduce the 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ to the top-selling Astra range,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand.  “The new 1.6-litre engine is Vauxhall’s cleanest ever mid-size diesel and is now available on Astra, as well as Meriva and Zafira Tourer.”

The Astra with the 1.6 CDTi is available to order now with first deliveries expected from April.

  • Fresh and modern scent for the style-conscious and sporty
  • Builds on success of first Bentley for Men fragrance
  • Blue bottle reflects the dynamic curves of Bentley models
Bentley is following up the success of its first men’s fragrance with the launch today of Bentley for Men Azure. The new luxury composition takes its cue from the classic aromas of the fougère family, with its green citrus top notes and woody base notes.
This powerfully expressive and complex fragrance has a fresh twist that appeals to sporty and style-conscious men.

The luxurious scent was composed by one of the world’s top perfume creators, Mathilde Bijaoui, who has worked for 10 years at the prestigious French fragrance house Mane.
With Bentley for Men Azure, Bijaoui has created an entirely new and contemporary scent from the classic aromas of the fougère perfume family that is a stimulating and exciting fragrance experience for today’s discerning man.
Subtle woody, fresh and spicy notes
Bentley for Men Azure makes an immediate impact with a contemporary burst of freshness: the top note is an invigorating, stimulating cocktail of fresh citrus, delicious fruity pineapple and the exhilarating herbaceous aroma of violet leaves. It immediately transports you into a Mediterranean field of blue.

The heart note of the composition blends Mediterranean aromas such as pimento, lavender and sage with a hint of tea, in a subtle and modern manner. The long finish of the fragrance conveys the luxury feel of Bentley models, with sumptuous sensual essences such as cashmere wood, tonka bean and the exclusive fragrance molecule orcanox.
Exclusive Bentley design in Azure blue
The character of Bentley for Men Azure is heightened by the curve of the bottle with the graduated bright blue colour giving the feel of freedom and freshness. The bottle takes the same form as the original Bentley For Men, with the iconic curves of Bentley models transferred to the rounded silhouette of the bottle.
The metal cap features a diamond-cut band reflecting the luxurious quality of the bottle. Bentley’s striking “Flying B” logo is embossed on the bottle’s shoulder and also adorns the front of the box. The image was devised by Paris design agency Aesthete under the direction of Thierry de Baschmakoff.

More powerful EU6-compliant A6 TDI ultra cuts CO2 by up to 14 per cent with no price or equipment penalties

  • New A6 2.0 TDI ultra is the first in a new range of models targeting class-leading efficiency – up to 64.2mpg with emissions of just 114g/km
  • Available in Saloon and Avant forms with no specification restrictions and no price premium – from £32,515 OTR – first UK deliveries in late March
  • Seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch at launch – manual gearbox to follow later
  • A6 2.0 TDI ultra S tronic – 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds, top speed 144mph, combined MPG 64.2, CO2 114g/km, BIK 17%

A new range of Audi ‘ultra’ models focusing more intensively than ever before on class-leading economy and company car viability will be spearheaded in the UK by the new A6 ultra, which is available to order from this week priced from £32,515 OTR. The new TDI-based model is the result of the single-minded pursuit of unparalleled efficiency, yet owning the most cost effective conventionally powered car in the premium executive class demands no power sacrifice, price premium or specification restriction.

Audi Board Member for Development, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg: “The latest TDI technology, ultra-efficient transmissions, advanced exhaust aftertreatment – customers will hardly see anything, but they’ll notice the effects of powerful acceleration and, thanks to extremely low fuel consumption, when paying at the gas station. The Audi ultra models score points with big advantages for everyday operation – just what customers appreciate.”

Power for the Saloon and Avant-based A6 TDI ultra variants is provided by a new 2.0-litre diesel engine that supersedes the existing 177PS unit and complies with forthcoming EU6 emissions regulations. Power increases to 190PS and torque from 380Nm to 400Nm, the latter available over a wider spread from 1,750 to 3,000rpm.

At launch in the UK the new unit is linked exclusively to a completely redesigned seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, which replaces the eight-speed multitronic CVT in four-cylinder models. Advances in the new transmission include further minimised internal friction, highly efficient oil supply and a centrifugal pendulum-type absorber that counteracts undesirable vibrations and allows low-noise driving at very low engine speeds. Later in 2014, manual transmission versions will also become available.

Economy up to 14 per cent better
The gains in terms of performance and everyday driveability made by the new engine and transmission are significant enough, but they are outweighed by the far-reaching financial benefits of improvements to fuel economy and reductions in CO2 output of up to 14 per cent.

Audi Head of Powertrain Development, Dr. Stefan Knirsch: “An innovative, highly efficient SCR system removes nitrogen oxides from the exhaust. This measure means that the new ultra models will of course meet the future Euro 6 emission standards while achieving lower fuel consumption.”

Combined economy and emissions in the new A6 2.0 TDI ultra with the seven-speed S tronic transmission show the most impressive improvement, with up to 64.2mpg delivered along with CO2 output of just 114g/km (2.0 TDI 177PS multitronic 56.5mpg, 132g/km). Similarly equipped Avant models offer up to 61.4mpg with 119g/km (outgoing equivalent 55.4mpg, 135g/km).

The outstanding emissions performance of the newcomers ensures that although recommended retail prices for the TDI ultra 190PS S tronic versions are identical to their outgoing TDI 177PS counterparts, their OTR prices are actually lower due to reductions in CO2-related Vehicle Excise Duty rates.

Costs make a further downward shift for business users. Benefit-in-kind liability for drivers of the A6 2.0 TDI with the new 190PS ultra engine and new S tronic transmission, for example, falls from 21 per cent in the outgoing version to 17 per cent. This equates to a total annual charge for a 40 per cent tax payer of £2,380 – one of the lowest liabilities for a conventionally powered premium executive class car.

As impressive as the financial viability of this new ultra model is the fact that – uniquely for a conventionally powered car in the premium sector – it has been achieved without need for any restriction on equipment. Like all A6 engines the new 190PS 2.0 TDI ultra unit can be paired with SE, S line and Black Edition specification, meaning its improved performance can be enjoyed along with alloy wheels of up to 20 inches in diameter, with the popular S line body styling additions and with every other infotainment feature, driver aid and comfort-enhancing option available for the rest of the range.

Subtle ‘ultra’ badging at the rear will mark out the most efficiency-focused A6 models, all of which will share the core A6 specification common to the range as a whole. This includes full leather upholstery, the MMI Radio Plus with 6.5-inch retractable colour display and DAB digital radio, SD card-based satellite navigation, light and rain sensors, cruise control, keyless go and the Audi parking system plus with acoustic and visual guidance.

Later this year the new A6 2.0 TDI ultra will be followed in the UK by ultra versions of the A4, A5 Coupé and A5 Sportback with CO2 emissions of as little as 104g/km.
