  • ST-based lifestyle estate with permanent four-wheel-drive, extra ground clearance and specific off-road look
  • Unique X-PERIENCE interior touches and premium equipment level
  • Two trims: SE and SE Technology. Optional Lux Pack for £1,250
  • Available with 2.0 TDI 150 and 184 PS engines, latter with DSG
  • Priced £24,385 to £28,870
  • UK ordering opens 1 September 2014, ahead of showroom launch in December
SEAT has confirmed pricing and specification for the latest addition to the high-selling Leon line-up. Called X-PERIENCE, the new lifestyle estate with permanent four-wheel-drive and off-roader looks starts from £24,385 on-the-road.
The Barcelona-based brand recently confirmed that its eagerly-awaited compact SUV will arrive in 2016, so the newcomer will be seeking to gain traction for SEAT in the lead-up to its launch.
With four-wheel-drive and extra ground clearance, Leon X-PERIENCE is capable in all road situations and poor weather conditions. Inside and out, it retains all of the ST’s style and versatility, including its sizeable 587-litre boot, which rises to 1,470 litres with the rear seats folded at the pull of a single lever.
The range-topping estate is immediately recognisable through its all-road looks. Among the accoutrements are protection mouldings on the door sills and wheel arches, to give it a robust look, plus aluminium look touches for the rear bumper and lower front spoiler.
Other elements singling it out as the ultimate Leon ST, are integrated fog lamps and twin chrome tailpipes, together with substantial air intakes at the front.

It’s got the substance to match the style too. Featuring all-road suspension with extra ground clearance, Leon X-PERIENCE is as at home on gravel and snow as it is on tarmac.
Underneath its upmarket look is the 4Drive all-wheel-drive system with intelligent EDS dynamic control, which accurately distributes weight between all four wheels, increasing traction to improve handling and stability. There’s also an extended electronic differential lock (XDS) for better traction while cornering.
Available to order from 1 September, Leon X-PERIENCE comes in two trim levels, SE and SE Technology. Offering a significantly enhanced standard specification over equivalent Leon STs, the range kicks off at £24,385 for the SE 2.0 TDI 150 manual. The same powered SE Technology version comes in at £26,370, while the 2.0 TDI 184 with DSG transmission tops out at £28,870.
Both versions are brimming with kit. Immediately distinguishable from other Leons, SE features 17-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, black roof rails and dark tinted rear windows. Rear parking sensors and twin exhaust tailpipes complete the look.
The premium feel continues on the inside, with dual zone climate control, leather steering wheel with orange stitching and X-PERIENCE logo, and cloth upholstered front sports seats with simil leather bolsters. Rounding off its practical nature is Hill Hold Control and a chrome loading sill for added protection when four-legged friends scrabble into the boot.
Upgrading to SE Technology costs £1,985, but brings a wealth of extras, which would cost £3,500 if bought individually. Befitting the name, many of them are high-end, such as SEAT Media System Plus with 5.8-inch colour touchscreen, DAB and satellite navigation, plus auto headlights, wipers and dimming rear view mirror.
On the outside, the flagship gains SEAT’s unique LED headlights and taillights, electrically folding door mirrors and 18-inch ‘X-PERIENCE’ machined alloy wheels. The interior gets even plusher too, with bespoke Alcantara upholstery and simil leather bolsters.
Latest-generation 4Drive system
The permanent all-wheel-drive in the new Leon X-PERIENCE is among the most modern and efficient systems of its kind. SEAT uses a newly developed multi-plate clutch with hydraulic actuation and electronic control – a fifth-generation Haldex clutch. In real world driving this means that the car is driven through the front wheels, with the 4Drive system continually monitoring real-time driving conditions. If it detects any loss in traction, it reacts within milliseconds to send torque smoothly to the wheels with the most grip.
While 4Drive copes with the terrain, the X-PERIENCE 2.0 TDI 184 DSG version also comes with SEAT Drive Profile, so that the driving experience can be tailored according to Normal, Sport and Eco modes.
Optional LUX pack
Leon X-PERIENCE is already well kitted out from a comfort, practicality and luxury point of view. Nevertheless, those opting for the SE Technology can take things to another level with the £1,250 Lux pack. The comprehensive upgrade combines black leather upholstery with simil leather bolsters, heated front seats, headlight washers and heated washer nozzles, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and chrome roof rails.
Plenty of individual options also abound across the range, such as panoramic sunroof, towbar pre-install, SEAT Sound audio system, and, crucially for adventurous types going off the beaten track, a space saver spare wheel (18-inch).
UK ordering for Leon X-PERIENCE opens on 1 September 2014, ahead of showroom launch in December.

European Union to stamp out laboratory fuel figures.

European Union regulators are preparing draft legislation that will require vehicle fuel use to be tested on roads rather than in laboratories, looking to close loopholes that allow carmakers to exaggerate fuel-saving and emissions credentials.
Already starting Sept. 1, slightly tougher EU testing standards will be enforced, in line with a global push for accuracy. More stringent standards are likely to be opposed by automakers.
EU research published last year showed that lab techniques, such as taping up car doors and windows and driving on an unrealistically smooth surface, explained around a third of a recorded drop in average EU CO2 emissions, linked to reduced fuel consumption.

An EU official, talking on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists, said a proposal on "a new real-world testing method" was expected by the year-end. This would need to be endorsed by EU member states.
Other officials also said a proposal was expected over the coming months.
The Commission, the EU executive, says nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, linked to lung disease and hundreds of thousands of early deaths, have been miscalculated to a still-greater extent than CO2 levels.
"In the real world we have seen that NOX emissions are higher than indicated by the test, up to a factor 4 or 5 and exceptionally more," one EU official said.
No one from the European Commission was available for official comment, although the Commission has previously made clear its wish to tighten the testing regime.
A policy document published last year said "real-world" NOX emissions were roughly five times the EU limit, adding that had a major impact on pollution and generated "negative publicity and reputational damage for vehicle manufacturers."
Under the testing regime from Sept. 1, diesel models, which have been particularly blamed for NOX emissions, should emit no more than 0.08 gram (80 milligrams) of NOX per kilometer.
Environmental groups, independent researchers and the Commission say even in the new regime, loopholes mean such emissions will be higher.
The old tests, obsolete at the end of August, are based on a 0.180 g/km limit as part of a reduction from 0.5 g/km over 15 years.
Industry plan
The car industry has acknowledged the tests are flawed, but argues the Commission needs to be realistic. VDA, the lobby for the German car industry, said it was working on its own real-world testing proposal, which it would put before the Commission.
Already, the industry says, it has a major challenge to adapt to a law that the European Union agreed earlier this year, which enforces the world's toughest limits on carbon dioxide.
And it says it is too soon to set a 2025 standard on car CO2 emissions, which the Commission has also said it is working on, with a view to a policy announcement this year.

"Further targets should not be set prematurely for the period after 2021," VDA said in a statement. It said it was vital "industrial policy and climate protection targets have equal priority".
If the carmakers have reservations, some testers embrace change. Vehicle tester TUV Nord said it has been involved in Commission debate on the real-world tests, which will need member state approval under a fast-track EU process to become law.
Johnannes Berg, head of TUV Nord's Brussels office, told Reuters "real driving emission" tests would provide valuable data on fuel use and emissions.

General Motors cuts prouction at Russian plaant amid uncertainty over politcal unrest.

General Motors Co. said it will reduce production at its plant near St. Petersburg, Russia, citing a continued slowdown of the country's auto market.
The plant, which makes Chevrolet Cruze, Opel Astra, and Chevrolet Trailblazer models, will only work four days in August and four in September, extending to eight in October, a company spokesman said today.

Car sales have faltered in Russia this year as economic growth has slowed, causing people to put off large purchases. Consumer sentiment has come under further pressure because of Western sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine.
The downturn in Russia's car market gathered pace in July, with sales sliding 23 percent year-on-year after a 17 percent fall in the previous month, according to the Association of European Businesses (AEB) lobby group.
AEB data showed that sales of Chevrolet cars fell 45 percent to 8,457 units in July, year-on-year, while Opel sales tumbled 25 percent to 4,927 vehicles, according to AEB data.

Volvo Cars approaches crash-free future with the opening of AstaZero proving ground.

AstaZero is the world’s first full-scale proving ground for future traffic safety solutions. Its opening has brought Volvo Car Group a step closer to realising their vision that by 2020 no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car.
An important measure towards achieving this goal will be the development of active safety systems, which will help to prevent accidents. These active safety systems will be the primary focus at AstaZero proving ground, located in close proximity to the Volvo Cars headquarters in western Sweden.
One of the facility’s greatest assets is its flexibility, with a design that permits the construction of unique, customised environments. As Pether Wallin, CEO of AstaZero, says, “You can simulate all types of real-world traffic scenarios. At most proving grounds, the options are more limited.”

The centre can accommodate a wide range of test conditions, such as those found on busy city roads, highways, multi-lane motorways and crossroads. These conditions are crucial for studying the way cars interact with moving obstacles such as other cars, pedestrians, cycles, mopeds, motorcycles, trucks, buses and even animals that suddenly appear. In certain studies, e.g. those involving complex traffic situations and high speeds, robots will operate the test vehicles.
“Safety testing under realistic circumstances is a prerequisite for developing our active safety systems,” says Anders Axelson of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. He continues: “The facility will play several important roles: not only will it help us meet our safety vision, developing cars that don’t crash, it will also help us further develop safety functions that will address non-motorists, such as pedestrians and cyclists.”
Research and development
One of AstaZero’s main functions will be as a platform for the research and development of next-generation safety technologies. Here, in collaboration with universities and industry partners, Volvo Cars will undertake a range of initiatives, from strategic vehicle research and innovation projects to targeted research projects.
‪The work at AstaZero will also include the development and testing of autonomous driving technology, an intelligent driver support system designed to reduce accidents while improving the driving experience. Advanced systems are also under progress to further help prevent, for example, inattentiveness and driver fatigue.
Although meeting their target date of 2020 may be an ambitious goal, Volvo Cars has every reason to be optimistic. Indeed, as their innovative safety solutions have already shown, the future may not be that far off.
Anders Axelson, for one, is confident: “The Swedish automotive industry is at the leading edge of active safety. Thanks to AstaZero, we have great prospects for keeping our leading position. We’re the only car manufacturing company in the world to have set a goal of zero traffic fatalities for a specific date, and we’re the only country in the world whose government supports a zero traffic fatalities vision.”

The Lexus NX, tajking the SUV out of the design box.

  • Ground-breaking design for the NX, Lexus’s first premium compact crossover
  • Traditional SUV lines make way for sports-influenced styling, inside and out
  • Great looks not at the cost of comfort or convenience, with generous cabin space and room for four golf bags in the boot
  • New NX 300h available to order now, with customer deliveries from October
Lexus is reshaping SUV design with styling for its new NX that owes more to sportscars than slab-sided 4x4s. The model that marks the company’s entry into the mid-size luxury SUV market makes a big visual statement with muscular curves and agile angles, representing the latest development of Lexus’s L-finesse contemporary design language.
The high-impact exterior presents a low, sloping roofline, a cab-forward silhouette, powerfully flared wheel arches and defining bodywork lines that flow directly from the signature Lexus spindle grille.
Making a vehicle appear as though it’s forged from a single piece of metal is a familiar design concept, but Lexus took it to heart by actually pouring molten metal over the die used to make the grille and studying the natural shape the flow created. The result inspired the NX’s angular shape – a look that’s distinct from any other model in its class.

The NX has the most distinctive “face” in the current Lexus line-up, its prominent spindle grille flanked by new LED headlamps and daytime running lights.
It’s not a case of style over substance, though. For example the C-pillar has a wide angle to maximise internal storage width. The crouched look is linked to the NX’s good ramp-over angle performance, and the fact the high point of the roof is set rearward ensures good headroom for rear passengers.
The exterior also achieves an ideal balance between distinctive design and aerodynamic efficiency, a major challenge for the design team given the car’s overall compact dimensions. A rear spoiler was essential to create a smooth flow of air away from the back of the vehicle, and extensive wind tunnel testing revealed that the best results came from giving the leading edge of the fin an upturned lip – a detail that stands out as a design accent while also helping secure the NX a low (0.33) coefficient of drag.
Similarly, the door mirrors and handles have air-cheating design, the latter being particularly eye-catching thanks to a concealed key barrel and integrated single-LED illumination.
The detailed work continues out of sight, beneath the car, where undercovers and spats designed specifically for the NX, ensure a clean airflow.
Where the interior is concerned, chief designer Tetsuo Miki wanted to capture the kind of style impact associated with high-end urban sports gear with a combination of structural good looks and luxurious but functional materials and textures.
His mission has delivered a driver’s cockpit that reaps the full benefit of Lexus’s advances in HMI technology, combined with elements that reflect the NX’s SUV status, such as soft leather kneepads either side of the prominent centre console.
The cabin provides ample space for everyone on board, with best-in-segment space in critical areas. The front-to-rear couple distance is a class-leading 962mm and the high roof design provides exceptional head clearance. The rear knee room is even greater than in some larger SUV models.
Luggage space is generous and practical. Maximum loadspace width is 1,347mm, enough for four golf bags to be stowed sideways, rather than across the diagonal. More storage space is available under the luggage board, taking total luggage capacity to 555 litres in hybrid versions and 580 litres in the turbo petrol (with a tyre repair kit carried).
True to its status as a practical SUV, the NX comes with a wide variety of storage points around the cabin, including glove and console boxes, a console tray, utility box, sunglasses hold, cup holders and door pocket holders for half-litre bottles. Throughout there is a typically Lexus attention to detail, as in the high-friction material used to line the inside of the cup holder that lets the driver open a twist-cap bottle one-handed.
The new full hybrid NX 300h is available to order now with customer deliveries from October. Next year the range will grow to include the NX 200t, the first model to adopt Lexus’s new 2.0-litre petrol turbo engine.

Bentley looks to the future with skills development programme.

  • Growing workforce skills and craftsmanship expertise
  • Training islands launched for ‘near the job’ training
  • Skills passed on through use of training mentors
Bentley Motors has announced it will launch a new Upskilling programme, strengthening its focus on training and development, a significant step in the company’s people and development strategy.
The new programme will broaden, develop and enhance the skills of Bentley colleagues. The luxury car brand is investing in new training tools and facilities to grow its current workforce, recruiting people to focus on core competencies within the business – Wood, Body and Trim and Engine – and redesigning its apprenticeship scheme.
Bentley’s member of the board for Human Resources, Dr Ariane Reinhart, said: “The automotive industry moves at such a fast pace it’s vital that we not only bring fresh thinking into the business, but we continually develop our own talent. We are working on the next generation of Bentleys and it’s important that our colleagues share the same commitment to performance, quality, and engineering excellence that our cars possess.

“That’s exactly why we are investing in our new Upskilling programme, to ensure we help our colleagues be as good as they can be, with every opportunity to develop their skills. The introduction of training islands, taking advantage of the expertise of master trainers and adopting a dual education approach are just some of the tools we will use to ensure a strong skills base continues throughout the business.”
Ten uniquely designed training islands will be introduced within Bentley’s main production facility, which last year manufactured a record 10,120 cars, to provide ‘near the job’ training.  These islands will take colleagues away from the usual ‘on the job’ process, with training undertaken by a number of training mentors, experts in their field.
In addition to mentors, Bentley will introduce master trainers, skilled colleagues who will develop and deliver training curriculum to the company’s latest apprentice intake, passing on skills to the next generation, keeping competencies within the business.
51 apprentices will join Bentley in September, the largest intake in a decade. 40 of these will be part of a new dedicated manufacturing scheme focused on strengthening core skills as Bentley builds up to the introduction of the Bentley SUV, in 2016.
Bentley’s new manufacturing apprentice approach sees the application of dual education; a tailored practical and theoretical method to vocational training based on competence profiles and dedicated placements within chosen professional areas in Manufacturing.
Looking ahead even further, Bentley is playing a crucial role in bringing a University Technical College (UTC) to Crewe in 2016. This new college will offer an exciting and inspiring education for young people seeking a pathway to employment and further education.
The collaboration with UTC Crewe forms the next step in Bentley’s focus on talent development and continuous improvement. Bentley already offers trainee programmes, including apprenticeships and graduate schemes, around 150 work experience placements each year and has an established school liaison programme providing workshops in local schools.
Bentley was also recently named as one of Britain’s Top Employers for the third year running by the Top Employers Institute. Highlighted was Bentley’s dedication to the personal development, working environment and employee culture of the 3,700 colleagues who work at the Crewe headquarters.

Volvo expects to see 10% growth in 2014, through better products and key markets.

Volvo Car Group expects sales for the full year to increase by close to 10 per cent in 2014 driven by steady growth in key markets and an improving product offer, according to Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive.
Mr Samuelsson was speaking at the company’s first half results announcement in Stockholm where he reported an operating profit of SEK 1,21bn for the first six months of 2014, with sales up 9.5 per cent to 229,013 and revenue of SEK 64,8bn. Net income was SEK 535m.
Volvo’s profitable first half and encouraging full year sales forecast continues the positive momentum around the company, which is implementing a transformation plan and preparing for the imminent launch of the all-new XC90 next week.

“After this solid first half, we look forward from a position of strength. Growing demand for first-class safety and environmental performance will continue to support our global growth,” said Mr Samuelsson. He added that at this stage he expects full-year operating income this year to be on par with 2013.
Sales of Volvo cars in China rose by 34.4 per cent during the first half of the year and Volvo Cars expects to continue to grow strongly in what is now its biggest market, helped by demand for new local models like the S60L and a refreshed S80L, as well as a further expansion of the dealer network.
“We are growing our presence in China and we expect to sell at least 80,000 cars there this year. The European market is also showing signs of recovery and growth and we are well placed to benefit further. We are committed to the US, where a new management team is implementing a revival plan to improve our performance,” said Mr Samuelsson.
Volvo Cars strengthened its position as market leader in Sweden, with sales rising by 20.2 per cent in the first half. In Western Europe the continuing roll-out of the company’s brand new, class-leading Drive-E engines boosted demand in important markets such as the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. Total sales in the region rose by 8.7 per cent over the first six months of 2014.
More information on Volvo Car Group’s results over the first six months of 2014 can be found in the Group's Interim Report January-June 2014. The report contains more details on developments in Volvo Car Group’s various markets, as well as in-depth financial information.

Lamborghini Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo

Automobili Lamborghini presents its new generation racecar developed by its Motorsport department: the new Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo. Unveiled in a world preview a few days ago during the prestigious Monterey Car Week (California, USA), the car will debut in all three series (Europe, Asia and North America) of the 2015 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.

The Huracán Super Trofeo marks a new benchmark for the race series. According to Maurizio Reggiani, in charge of Lamborghini’s Research and Development Department and motorsport activities, “The Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo is an all-new car built from scratch with a clear racing concept. Every feature is engineered for sophisticated high performance, complying with the strictest motorsport safety standards.”

The chassis features an exceptionally light roll cage at just 43 Kg that extends to the rear axle, and impressive torsional stiffness that represents a massive 45% improvement compared to the previous model. The frame is a hybrid carbon/aluminum construction with modified geometries to house an improved radiator up front and better accommodate the racing gearbox at the rear, which also provides better aerodynamics. The dry weight of the Huracán Super Trofeo is 1,270 Kg, with a weight distribution of 42/58%.

The bodywork is in composite materials and, along with the aerodynamics, has been developed in collaboration with Dallara Engineering with the direct involvement of the founder Gian Paolo Dallara. Refinements to the Huracán Super Trofeo include new bodywork ‘fast fittings’, and a new oil radiator providing even more performance than that found on the Gallardo.

The new Huracán Super Trofeo adopts the V10 direct injection engine mounted on the road car, managed by a Motec control unit that delivers a maximum output of 620 hp and an astonishing weight/power ratio of 2.05 Kg/hp.

A significant feature of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo is the rear-wheel drive choice as already adopted in the GT classes. This will allow Super Trofeo drivers to gain important experience of this traction system to facilitate their motorsport careers.

Further technical features on the Huracán Super Trofeo include new engine supports, a new three-disc clutch and an XTrac sequential gearbox developed  specifically for the  Huracán Super Trofeo with an electric actuator designed by the Magneti Marelli Motorsport division.

Electronics represent a significant leap forward in development, and now include new lightweight cables and connections specifically for racing. The control unit is the MOTEC M182 that controls data, gear changes and the new TFT display mounted on the dashboard. Special features are the traction control and the Bosch Motorsport ABS. This system features 12 different settings that can be actioned directly on the steering wheel for ideal set-up in any weather/track conditions. Front and rear lights are now LED only as on the road going version. A new, race-oriented steering wheel has been developed jointly with OMP.

Aerodynamics have been refined for better drag efficiency and maximum traction and downforce in any track conditions. More balanced than before, the aerodynamics now benefit from a rear wing with ten different settings, front and rear diffusers, and adjustable front air intake ducts.

The new Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo will be exclusively equipped with Pirelli tyres. Pirelli has followed every phase of the new car’s development - from the first drawings to final road tests - in order to create tyres that are perfectly matched to the Lamborghini’s specific characteristics. In particular, the decision to go with two-wheel drive for the new Huracan Super Trofeo has led to new tyre sizes: 305/660-18 at the front, and 315/680-18 at the back.

The Huracán Super Trofeo is mounted with fully adjustable anti-roll bars and two-way adjustable Ohlins dampers. The hydraulic power steering enhances steering sensitivity and adopts an electric power pump.

In the racing-specific interiors the Alcantara® in Nero Ade colour is used throughout the car, on the dashboard and central tunnel and also on fundamental driving parts, such as the steering wheel, gear selector and ergonomic seats.

Lamborghini’s newest raging bull supercar already made its track debut last month in development tests. For the occasion, under the supervision of the Chief Test Driver Giorgio Sanna and along with the two official Automobili Lamborghini test drivers Fabio Babini and Adrian Zaugg, all the Young Drivers Program pilots were involved and provided their feedback.

With the new Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo the historic partnership between the brand founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini back in 1963 and Gian Paolo Dallara, now becomes even closer. The same Dallara was among the first engineers who worked on Lamborghini cars and had a key role in the development of the legendary Miura.

"For Dallara Engineering, it has been very rewarding to be involved in the aerodynamic and body development of a high performance car such as the Huracán Super Trofeo. From my personal point of view it has been for me a kind of ‘homecoming’," said Giampaolo Dallara.
"50 years ago, Lamborghini gave me the opportunity to challenge myself in ambitious and successful projects, and this new collaboration allows me to feel part of a company in which I have experienced moments of intense personal and professional achievement."
