We know the all-new 2015 Ford F-150 will be made almost entirely out of aluminum, but what about the new Super Duty? We managed to catch prototypes undergoing winter testing, complete with full camouflage hiding what we believe to be a significantly redesigned model.
The automaker has made great strides with the aluminum bodies of the new F-150, but we are left wondering if it will try and work that structure into the Super Duty models as well. While we can see from the photos--even with the camo--that the exterior of the truck has undergone some significant changes, we're left to speculate what's under the hood.
Ford has been pushing its EcoBoost engine lineup with all its vehicles, and we expect to see at least one variant as an option when the new Super Duty models go on sale for the 2017 model year. The automaker is also expected to take advantage of direct injection on the 6.2-liter V-8 that is seen on the current model.
The vehicle in the photos is without question a diesel model, but we can only guess at its performance and fuel economy numbers. Expect to see a variety of engine options paired with an improved version of Ford's new ten-speed automatic transmission, which will help boost fuel economy.
Although we don’t know if the Super Duty seen testing is aluminum, you can bet we'll find out way before the model debuts in the coming years.
