Just as General Motors announces a new ignition switch recall this week, it looks like Chrysler Group may be heading down the same path. The government has opened two investigations into Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles after consumers complained of ignition switch problems. An investigation is one step in a process that may or may not lead to vehicle recalls.
The first probe involves 525,000 2006-2007 Jeep Commander SUVs and 2005-2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Consumers lodged 32 complaints, alleging that if the driver's knee or leg accidentally hits the ignition key fob, the engine could shut off.
This affects power steering and brakes, and it may cause the airbags to fail. A second investigation involves a larger number of vehicles. Around 700,000 vehicles are affected, including the 2008-2010 Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Dodge Journey as well as the 2009-2010 Dodge Journey AWD. In rough road conditions, the key can rotate from the run position to the ACC position, and airbags may not deploy in a front crash.
Although Chrysler had already issued a recall for ignition key problems, only 2010 models were covered. Twenty-three consumers are still complaining, and many say that they experienced the defect condition after the recall remedy was applied. One crash was reported in relation to the first investigation, but there are no known injuries or deaths in either case.
