  • * Citroen and DS Automobiles split sales in May 2015 - Combine both to get an accurate figure when comparing to 2015 sales figures.
  • Figures all supplied by SMMT.
The start of the year resulted in some strange results, January was the best start to the year for eleven years yet when you look at the brands that drew a negative figure, there are some there that really should not be there at all.

Luxury brands Bentley and Maserati have been up and down throughout the previous year, so to see these two down is not really surprising, they sell in limited numbers so a negative percentage figure could be just a couple of cars, you then have the mass market brands, Citroen, Fiat, MININissan, Skoda, Vauxhall and Volkswagen.

Citroen can be explained by the separation of DS Auomobiles from the parent company, add them together and you get a rise on last year, the others, well, they all have new or refreshed products, The new Fiat 500, Clubman, updated Juke and Qashqai, updated Skoda Octavia and Superb, new Astra range for Vauxhall and that leaves VW, well, they screwed over the public, so the public are hitting back.

Jaguar, Ssangyong, MG and Smart all see triple digit growth, Jaguar has the new XF and XESsangyong the Tivoli, Smart has both new models and MG has, well, nothing new, the MG3 has had a mild re-fresh, the MG6 is waning and ready to be discontinued, and the new SUV is not due for a few more months yet, but for all four brands, if this continues, they are going to have a brilliant 2016.

Vauxhall, is the big surprise however, the new Corsa is now in full swing, the Mokka is doing great business, the new Astra is doing well, along with other models in the range, so why and how are they 10% down on last January's numbers, I have no idea to be honest, the same as Nissan, the Qashqai has taken the UK #2 best seller for January, and the Juke is up there too, yet they dropped sales, why, again, no idea, the Micra is in dire need of replacement, so maybe thats why.

So what to expect for 2016, well, there is going to be brilliant new cars coming, the Land Rover Discovery 5, the Jaguar F-Pace, The new Ford KA, Fiat is back with the new Tipo and 124 Spider, Alfa's Giulia, DS and a refreshed DS3, New Megane, new Impreza, new E-Class, Two new Tesla's the Model X and Model III, Bentley and its Bentayga, and whole host of Mercedes models and the list goes on and on.

Ford takes the top spot again with the Fiesta, the VW Group takes three spots Vauxhall it's usual two like Ford, Nissan takes two and Mercedes creeps in at 10 with the C-Class,so, it is looking like a classic year, and other record breaker, and we get to enjoy all teh great new cars, the ones that fail, the constant recalls, issues and complaints, this is what makes the motoring world such a fun place to be involved in.
