A New Dimension in Dynamic Design

While Infiniti sports saloons have always been noted for their outstanding proportions and presence, the new Infiniti Q50 adds a new dimension of premium style.

Its strong first impression is anchored by the smooth yet dynamic character line arising from its “double arch” grille. It energetically flows along through the sides of the body like a wave and merges with the rear, creating a highly fluid and intriguing profile and fully illustrating the Infiniti Q50’s dynamic and athletic stance.

“The car reflects the direct influence of the concepts known as the ‘Infiniti Trilogy’, particularly Essence, while honouring the iconic design dynamics of earlier Infiniti sports saloons. The new Q50’s athletic and tightened appearance blends its lower and wider proportions with enhanced interior roominess to stunning effect inside and out,” said Shiro Nakamura, senior vice president and chief creative officer.

Signature Infiniti exterior design features include the “double arch” grille, dynamic arch roofline and Crescent-cut C-pillar. The front end is decidedly aggressive, with a sport front fascia offered on the Sport models. The new grille’s three-dimensional, textural quality is provided by elaborate detailing of the waved mesh pattern surface and chrome surround, while the distinctive sharp lines of the LED headlights and marker lights suggest an almost human look.

70232inf_Q50-Exterior-Rear-3_4.jpg

The lean, robust body sides are designed to anchor the performance stance with a strong, solid “bone” and arched roofline that flows to the crescent C-pillars that are similar to those that originally appeared on the Essence Concept. In the rear, the side character lines smoothly merge with the shape of the rear LED combination lights. The familiar rear double-arch boot line completes the strong, unforgettable view from behind. Heated outside mirrors with integrated LED turn signals are standard, while a power sliding and tilting glass sunroof is optionally available.

Other exterior refinements include new door architecture with narrower, roll-formed A and B-pillar sashes that provide improved access, as well as a more open cabin environment. A new colour palette has been specially selected to accentuate contours and sculpted surfaces of the Q50 and includes a range of eight premium colours.

The new body design also offers enhanced airflow over both the upper and lower body portions, resulting in a coefficient of drag of just 0.26. The Q50 also features zero front and rear lift.

“Moving forward, we want all Infiniti vehicles to reflect an energetic force rooted in nature, such as the shape of a dynamic wave,” said Nakamura. “The Q50’s enhanced sense of three-dimensionality gives it a look of strength and agility – a look that is highly personal, seductive and slightly mysterious.”

Performance With a Personal Touch

Throughout the Infiniti Q50’s development, compromise was never an option. No compromise on innovation, design or performance targets, allowing the development teams to stretch the boundaries of what a sports saloon can be.

“The new Q50 amplifies every driver’s performance preference and enjoyment behind the wheel. We have one of the fastest accelerating hybrid engines, which also happens to be projected as one of the most fuel-efficient. We have advanced performance and safety technologies that can see and react before the driver can. And, we have the world’s first quick and precise Direct Adaptive Steering technology,” said de Nysschen.

At launch in North America, two advanced petrol engines will be available, followed by additional options in other global markets later in the year. The Q50’s refined 3.7-litre aluminium-alloy DOHC 24-valve V6 is rated at 328 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque and features Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS) and Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL®).

The available hybrid powertrain features the Infiniti Direct Response HybridÔsystem with Intelligent Dual Clutch Control. It combines a 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC aluminium-alloy V6 and compact laminated lithium-ion battery design with an innovative one-motor/two-clutch motor control. The system’s V6 is rated at 302 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the advanced 50 kW electric motor is rated at 67 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid system net power is 360 horsepower, providing strong acceleration and lean fuel economy.

“True to the Infiniti DNA, our hybrid powertrains put performance first, without compromising fuel efficiency. It takes full advantage of the electric motor’s instant torque for exceptional acceleration and, in combination with the 3.5-litre V6, provides a sporty driving feel under all driving conditions. We have targeted the best balance of performance and fuel economy and hit it dead centre,” said de Nysschen.

Both powertrains are available in rear-wheel drive and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive layouts matched to an advanced 7-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode and available steering column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters.

70232inf_Q50-Exterior-Profile.jpg

Precise handling is provided by the 4-wheel independent multi-link suspension. The front is a single pivot double-wishbone design, while the revised rear design utilises a multi-link design with coil springs and Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers, with increased camber stiffness and improved ride comfort. The suspension features extensive use of lightweight aluminium components, along with front and rear stabiliser bars. A sport-tuned suspension is available with Sport models. Also supporting the enhanced handling is an improvement in front body stiffness (versus the previous generation).

The Q50 rides on 17-inch machine-finished aluminium-alloy wheels with 225/55R17 all-season run-flat tyres. Also available are 19-inch aluminium-alloy sport wheels with 245/40R19 run-flat all-season or summer tyres. Confident braking is provided by 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brakes with 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist. Also available are sport brakes with upgraded discs, 4-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear. Steering is provided by a power-assisted vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion system.

The new Q50 also features Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering technology, a world-first for production vehicle design. The system allows independent control of the Q50’s tyre angle and steering inputs, transmitting the driver’s intentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system.

This increases the direct driving performance feel by quickly and intelligently communicating road surface feedback to the driver. Four different steering settings are offered, allowing customisation by driver preference or road conditions. This ground-breaking technology provides the flexibility for the driver to change both steering effort and the steering gear ratio. A backup mechanical steering system is provided with models utilising the new Direct Adaptive Steering technology.

Also offered is another world-first: Active Lane Control, which uses a camera-based straight-line stability system to further enhance on-centre driving capability and improve vehicle stability. The system is included as part of the Lane Departure Prevention system, not only adjusting for unintended lane drift, but also making finer adjustments for minor road surface changes or crosswinds (as detected by the camera-based, lane marker detection system). The system goes beyond the traditional Lane Departure Prevention system, taking it a step further by not only reading the road ahead (the camera is located above the rear view mirror) for unintended lane drift but also by making small steering input angle adjustments if the Q50 undergoes minor direction changes due to road surface changes or crosswinds (as detected by the lane marker detection system). By reducing the amount of steering adjustments the driver could experience less tiredness over longer distances.

“The beauty of these advanced systems is to allow a more personal driving experience, with more input when desired and less intrusion of road imperfections to the steering wheel,” said de Nysschen. “These are just the start of a range of future technologies that are becoming a point of differentiation for our Infiniti customers.”

In fine-tuning the Infiniti Q50’s exceptional performance standards, Infiniti’s partnership with Red Bull Racing enabled three-time Formula One™ World Driver’s Champion Sebastian Vettel and the team’s Test & Reserve driver Sebastien Buemi to provide an extra dimension to its development. With the goal of making the new model the most dynamic and exciting sports saloon on the market, Vettel provided input on the Q50’s performance and handling at Infiniti’s Tochigi facility in Japan.

Buemi tested at the Nurburgring – one of the toughest proving grounds in the world – pushing prototypes to the limits to help produce a chassis with outstanding handling characteristics.

Infiniti recently announced that from 2013 it will be Title Partner and Technical Partner to ‘Infiniti Red Bull Racing.’ This deep collaboration will lead to joint technical projects providing mutual benefits for both companies on the track and the road.

“Having the opportunity to receive feedback on chassis development from two world class drivers is priceless,” said de Nysschen. “Our partnership as ‘Infiniti Red Bull Racing’ is an extensive one. We are working together to identify a number of areas for technical collaboration and to apply the benefits of partnering with the Formula One World Champions to our own people, processes and technology.”

Another way that the new Infiniti Q50 raises the performance standards in class is the high degree of personalisation available, which is made possible with the new fully customisable digital environment. The system works with the vehicle’s advanced i-Keys to recognise the vehicle settings for up to four different drivers.

Offering a sense of ‘my car knows me,’ the i-Key can recognise each driver and automatically engage pre-set preferences for driving position, heating and cooling, audio, navigation and telematics. For example, up to 96 optional settings are offered in the custom mode alone. Easy setting or changing of settings is accessed through the innovative dual touch-screen displays.

In addition, by using the drive mode selector located on the centre console, engine, transmission, handling and steering adjustments can be instantly tuned, for example, to provide different sport or touring settings.

Modern Luxury Meets Meticulous Craftsmanship

Matching the inspired Infiniti Q50 design and performance is an interior created to the same extraordinary standards. The interior environment offers a powerful blend of three-dimensional textures, the highest levels of craftsmanship and premium quality, combining modern luxury and user-focused advanced technology.

“An interior is a confluence of thousands of parts and many materials, including leathers, fabrics, metals and glass. The harmony with each element is an important part of the Q50’s warmth and high quality feel,” Nakamura explained. “Our designers approached the integration of every element in the interior in terms of not just function but also of stimulation of the senses – colour, touch, texture, finish and beauty – creating an environment that is both intuitive and indulgent.”

The Q50 interior is also designed as an invitation to drive – to celebrate the elation of driving that is often lost in the modern world. As such, special attention was paid to the driver’s position, offering a generous range of customisable adjustments within a cosseting yet comfortable cockpit. The Q50’s instrument panel honours Infiniti’s “double wave” design tradition, while updated with a new asymmetrical flow from the top of the centre cluster to the wide centre console. Access to all key operations and controls is designed so that the driver does not need to change driving posture, including use of hard switches, touch panels and the drive mode selector controller.

The front and rear seats are a new ergonomic design, developed to help distribute body pressure across a wider range of the upper seating surface. When sitting, the pressure load on the backbone is about 1.4 times greater than while standing. The bending moments that become a factor of load are reduced by the new seat design, with the additional support for the pelvis.

The roomy interior space offers ample front and rear head room with rear knee space enhanced by the new thin front seatback design and greater front seat slide and lift adjustability. Front and rear seat hip points have also been adjusted for greater comfort. Foot space in the rear is also expanded by moving the B-pillar forward nearly an inch (versus traditional designs), making it easier to enter and exit. Effective luggage space is expected to be the best in the segment at 510 litres with the 3.7-litre V6 and 399 litres with the hybrid power-train.

The Infiniti Q50 features a choice of interior fabrics and colours, including leather-appointed seating surfaces. Three interior colours are offered: Wheat, Graphite and Stone.

Finishing off the elegant interior is a combination of “Kacchu” aluminium inspired by traditional Samurai armaments and genuine maple wood trim, which is representative of the 16th Century Urushi painting technique.

“Quality is another Infiniti Q50 strong point,” added Nakamura. “Our designers’ passion, obsession with detail and devotion to craftsmanship and continuous improvements ensures we are producing a truly premium product of the best quality.”

The Q50’s quiet cabin is augmented by standard Active Noise Control, with cancelling of intrusive low frequency noise from four door-mounted speakers, allowing easy conversation with passengers. Premium audio systems include an available next-generation Studio on Wheels by Bose® with a new 3-speaker instrument panel (14 speakers in total throughout the cabin) and Advanced Staging Technology®. SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately) and High Definition (HD) radio are standard.

Other features include Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control, Bluetooth®Hands-free Phone System, RearView Monitor and optional Advanced Climate Control System (ACCS) with Plasmacluster® air purifier and Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection.

Infiniti Connected Technologies

Building on Infiniti’s unique approach to making owners’ lives easier, which includes the Infiniti Personal Assistant program with 24-hour access to a team of professional assistants, the new Infiniti InTouch™ telematics system brings the future of in-car connectivity to the Q50 interior today. Unlike conventional interfaces, the Q50 has not one but two touch capacitive screens with intuitive hand gesture screen operation to easily connect drivers to their lives outside the car.

“We have new technologies that embrace the way people live today – seamless connectivity and personalisation everywhere they go, including while in their cars, with an optimised human-machine interface for ease of use,” said de Nysschen.

Along with the large dual screens, the Infiniti InTouch™ system is designed to effortlessly synchronise car and driver. Content and functions directed to the upper screen includes the most frequently used applications, such as navigation maps.  Other content is directed to the lower display screen.

The two screens work together so that, for example, the navigation map can be viewed on the top screen while setting destinations or finding points-of-interest can be done on the lower screen. A limited number of critical functions, such as heating and cooling, are operated by hard switches. Content can be customised using easy-to-understand menus. A selection of vehicle-centric apps will be pre-loaded into the system. Owners will also be able to download, update and sync personal apps through their smart-phones and USB drives. Additional details on the system’s operation will be available at a later date.

Safety Shield Technologies

The final area of segment leadership for the new Infiniti Q50 is its advanced safety systems. Building on the long list of safety and security technologies already found in other Infiniti models, the Infiniti Q50 offers available Intelligent Cruise Control with Full Speed Range, predictive Forward Collision Warning (world-first technology), Forward Emergency Braking, Distance Control Assist, Blind Spot Intervention, Back-up Collision Intervention®, Lane Departure Prevention and Active Lane Control.

PEUGEOT’S JUST ADD FUEL® AIMS TO HELP YOUNG DRIVERS

Following the announcement from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)1 that young drivers are putting off car servicing to save money, Peugeot is continuing its support of young motorists by adding yet another desirable model to its ‘Just Add Fuel’® (JAF) scheme.

Now available in Peugeot Dealerships, the Peugeot 208 VTi 1.0 litre 68bhp, starting from £9,995, is the latest 208 model to be added to the JAF range. This new engine boasts great performance but is capable of an efficient 65.7mpg and with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km, it is exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), making it the perfect car for young drivers.

70251peu-a.jpg

Neil Moscrop, Director of Sales at Peugeot, said: “The figures recently published by the SMMT offer the latest indication that young drivers are now, more than ever, feeling the financial challenge of owning a car. As insurance costs continue to increase, servicing is wrongly being seen as a ‘luxury’ many young drivers simply can’t afford”.

“Just Add Fuel®, gives young drivers the opportunity to buy a brand new Peugeot and cover all the major motoring costs, servicing and insurance in particular, in one single fixed monthly payment, eliminating the worry of unexpected costs.”

The scheme, launched in 2011, is an all-inclusive, inflation proof package that provides comprehensive motor insurance, road tax, vehicle servicing, roadside assistance and warranty, all in a three year finance package, with one single monthly payment.

Moscrop continued: “The welcome addition of the 208 VTi 68 to the ‘Just Add Fuel®’ range, demonstrates Peugeot’s on-going commitment to support young drivers by making some of our most desirable models available through JAF.”

One of the main benefits of the scheme is its ability to make buying a new car a realistic option for drivers. Market research2 indicates that over the last decade, the average number of Peugeot new car buyers aged under 40 was only 22 per cent. However, recent research carried out by the brand has revealed that JAF has had a positive impact on younger drivers purchasing behaviour, with new car buyers through ‘Just Add Fuel®’, aged under 40, now accounting for 40 per cent of the sample.

Moscrop concluded: “It’s essential the message hits home that servicing is not an optional extra and by missing regular service appointments, drivers are putting themselves and other drivers at risk.

“With this in mind, Peugeot is committed to working with young drivers to ensure that they remain safe while on the roads, while still having the option of affording our newest models.”

Mini has another record broken in the USA

The land of opportunity remains the primary sales region for the British premium brand – ten years after MINI was launched, yet another record has been broken with sales of 66,123 vehicles.

Munich. Last summer there were celebrations marking “10 Years of MINI in the USA”. By the end of the year congratulations were in order once again: the British premium brand had broken a new sales record in the USA after delivering 66,123 MINI models in the course of 2012 – a jump of 15 per cent over the previous year. With these figures, the “land of opportunity” has made a significant contribution to MINI’s new record-breaking global sales total of 301,526 units. Yet again the USA has emerged as the world’s number one market for small and compact vehicles sporting the MINI badge.

P90110129_highRes.jpg

Within the United States, MINI enjoys a resounding popularity on the West Coast in particular. The West sales region, which includes the states of California and Nevada, recorded 21,505 newly registered MINIs last year. In California, which accounts for around one in four of all MINIs sold in the USA, the market share is commensurately high. Peak figures were achieved in upmarket Los Angeles, where MINI notched up a slice of 9 per cent of sales in the competitive field, followed by the San Francisco region with 8.2 per cent. Across the USA as a whole, the MINI market share currently lies around the 6.7 percentage mark.

P90110248_highRes.jpg

Credit for the growth rates in global MINI sales must also go to the ongoing expansion of the model range. Boasting 102,250 units sold – around a third of total sales – the MINI Countryman played a pivotal role in the record results of 2012. In the USA, the MINI Countryman’s share in the brand’s overall success is similarly large: 21,012 vehicles from this model range found buyers in the USA in 2012. It reflects a clear trend towards powerful engines and the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system. The MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 was the most popular model variant with sales of 8,223 units, followed by the MINI Cooper S Countryman, which notched up 7,479.

P90110427_highRes.jpg

Thus the MINI brand’s foray into a new vehicle segment proved a great success story in 2012 as well, both in the USA and globally. Yet the front-runner in the brand’s popularity ratings is once again the MINI Hatch. This classic body variant also topped the USA rankings with sales of 29,278 units. Following the second-placed MINI Countryman are the MINI Clubman (5,769 units) and the MINI Convertible (4,813). As for the latter, it is worth noting that the open-top four-seater is extremely popular on the sunny West Coast in particular and that last year almost 60 per cent of were ordered in high-performance MINI Cooper S Convertible guise.

P90110444_highRes.jpg

The two novices in the model range – the MINI Coupé and the MINI Roadster – likewise made a blistering start out of the blocks. In its first complete sales year the MINI Coupé registered 2,880 deliveries, while in the first few months of its life in the United States the MINI Roadster already had a tally of 2,371 units to add to the brand’s successful sales figures. Both two-seaters, moreover, instantly established their status in the USA as a byword for outstanding driving fun and a particularly intense go-kart feeling – as corroborated by the strong demand for the extremely sporty MINI John Cooper Works Coupé and MINI John Cooper Works Roadster models. Their market share within the relevant range clearly outstrips that of any other MINI.

If You like the RR Evoque, You will LOATHE this....

What do you think about the photo of this monstrosity Well, aside of your own opinions, the photo is the Moon Rover Evoque built by an Indian tuning and styling company named Big Daddy Customs. If you reckon the picture to be the Tata Safari, you are not absolutely wrong since the car is indeed developed based on a Tata Safari.

Moon-Rover-Evoque-Front-Interior.jpg

You may be wondering, why such Safari is used to be the base for developing a Range Rover Evoque replica? And the answer is that because there is more than enough supply of the vehicle on the street.

The Big Daddy has already added a new back headlights and a recessed grille into the front end of the Moon Rover, giving it a convincing look. The Moon Rover seems to have very similar new front bumper with that of the Evoque. The Evoque Dynamic is completed with silver lower body protection, while the large grilles house the LED daytime running lights. On the sides of the extended wheel arches, there are cutouts, completing the new bonnet.

Moon-Rover-Evoque-Front-Right-Side.jpg

Aside of the front design that is quite nice, the Big Daddy seems not work so well for the back of the vehicle. The high rear of the Safari is not really match perfectly with the Moon Rover’s low and wide look. Aside of the equipments mentioned, there are also a silver trim, quad exhausts along with some LED rear lights that round the vehicle’s design changes. The Moon Rover appears in a two tone black over white. Moving inside the car, there is red leather that adds the vehicle’s luxury look.

Moon-Rover-Evoque-Rear-Right-Side2.jpg

That’s all about the Indian tuner’s works on their new Moon Rover. Some of you may do not really like it, but some of you may do. You can express your feeling about this Range Rover replica in the comment space below. However aside of your own opinions, Tata owns Land Rover has gave some provenance to this tuned vehicle.

MERCEDES CLA - A NEW FUTURE FOR SMALL CARS

The CLA is set to establish a new segment, with world-leading aerodynamics and avant-garde coupé design. As a new four-door coupé it follows the idea of the CLS, whose design concept has spawned more than its fair share of imitators since its debut in 2003. With its frameless doors, the coupé adopts the design of the Concept Style Coupé into series production. The newcomer features a radar-based braking system (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) as standard which is able to warn the driver of an obstacle from a speed of 4 mph and to initiate precision braking when the driver steps on the brake pedal. The new CLA will be available for ordering from March 2013 and will be delivered to retailers in June 2013.

"The response to the Concept Style Coupé was overwhelming. The most frequent comment by far was 'Please put this car into series production.' That's precisely what we are doing now," notes Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The CLA is a car that does not confuse 'middle range' with 'middling quality'. Its sporty design underscores the sporty side of the Mercedes-Benz brand."

In keeping with its sporty positioning, the CLA is available with high-torque turbo engines rated at up to 211 hp and sports suspension. The technical highlights of this new design icon include a new world record in aerodynamics for series production automobiles (Cd value: 0.23 – 0.22 for the CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition, which is not confirmed for the UK market) and numerous driving assistance systems, including advanced COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST.

This radar-based assistance system provides the possibly distracted driver with visual and acoustic warnings of identified obstacles and prepares Brake Assist for precision braking. Braking is initiated as soon as the driver steps emphatically on the brake pedal. When an impending danger of collision is identified, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST calculates the precise braking force ideally needed to avoid an accident and makes the best possible use of any distance remaining. As a new feature, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST affords protection from typical rear-end collisions in dangerous traffic situations in the CLA from a speed of only 4 mph (previously: over 19 mph).

The model lines and packages which vary greatly in character are available to individualise the striking compact mid-range coupé (length/width/height: 4630/1777/1437 millimetres). In keeping with the digital lifestyle of the CLA's social media-savvy target group, smartphones can additionally be fully integrated into the vehicle's display and operating system.

Following a brief appearance on the eve of the NAIAS in Detroit (14 to 27 January 2013), the CLA will have its official world premiere at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Berlin (15 to 18 January 2013). The new CLA will be available for ordering from March and will be delivered to retailers in June 2013.

The style rebel: exterior design

Its breathtakingly sporty proportions and powerfully dynamic design idiom featuring an interplay between concave and convex surfaces give this four-door coupé its unmistakable look. The CLA adopts the avant-garde design of the Concept Style Coupé into series production almost 1:1.

The vehicle's striking features include the bonnet embedded in the front end with powerdomes and the diamond-look grille. The light modules and LEDs behind the headlamp cover glass have been arranged in such a way as to create the characteristic "flare effect" for the daytime driving lights and indicators. This light signet defines the car's energetic appearance and shapes a new, youthful Mercedes face.

Numerous details indicate that on a design level the CLA represents a further development of the modern classic Mercedes-Benz CLS. Three prominent lines give structure to the vehicle when viewed from the side: the front structural edge over the wings flows towards the rear end in a characteristic dropping line. Another, more sinewy line spans the shoulder muscle above the rear axle, while the third feature line extends in a sweeping curve from the front wheel towards the rear. Together, these lines lend depth and dynamism to the side profile.

The width-emphasising rear end exudes power and athleticism, featuring an interplay between convex and concave surfaces and edges. The gently sloping roof contour and the pronounced, hallmark curvature of the rear window provide the CLA with a coupé-style character from the rear, too. The athletic impression from the rear results from the drawn-in C-pillars in conjunction with the shoulder muscle over the rear wheel arch linings. The tail lights are framed by the muscular lines of the shoulders which extend into the rear end, the horizontal orientation of the lights emphasising the rear's powerful and aesthetic breadth. The light functions feature an arrow-style arrangement.

A large panoramic tilting/sliding sunroof is optionally available. This sunroof consists of a fixed polycarbonate cover at the front, a moving element made of mineral crystal and side trims to match the glass look. As such, the glass surface then extends from the front windscreen to the rear window.

"Cool touch" effect: the interior

The exterior's progressive, sporty appearance is continued inside the vehicle. The interior additionally derives a very special quality feel from the design idiom, the selection of high-quality materials and the available combinations of materials. All trim surfaces are galvanised in silver shadow, resulting in a metallic finish with "cool touch".

The instrument panel incorporates five round vents. The outer rings of the round vents have a high-quality electroplated finish. The airflow direction is governed by a galvanised insert that reveals a meticulous attention to detail. The free-standing display screen features a black piano-lacquer-look front panel and a flush-fitting silver frame.

The CLA is fitted with integral seats in the front and rear, underscoring its sporty character. The rear bench seat emphasises the outer seats (2+1-seater). Coloured contrasting stitching is available, according to the selected interior appointment options.

Sleek as they come: new record Cd value

With a Cd value of 0.23, the CLA sets a new benchmark – both within the Mercedes-Benz model range and among all production vehicles. The drag area, Cd x A - which is crucial to aerodynamic resistance – also leads the field, at 0.51 m². This already record figure is undercut still further by the CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition (not confirmed for the UK market). In this case the Cd figure is 0.22, while in terms of wind resistance the four-door coupé manages to breach another magic barrier: the figure here is just 0.49 m².

12C993_04.jpg

The good air flow characteristics, which are a major contributory factor to the vehicle's impressive fuel consumption in everyday conditions, result from numerous aerodynamic optimisation measures. These include a low A-pillar shoulder with adapted A-pillar geometry, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, wheel trims designed for low aerodynamic drag and serrated wheel spoilers on the front and rear wheel arches.

Extensive underbody panelling, additional panelling in the middle area of the rear axle and an aerodynamically optimised rear silencer followed by a diffusor improve the flow of air under the underbody.

Smart safety: advanced assistance systems

Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the CLA and reduce the driver's workload. Standard-fit features for the coupé include ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to protect the CLA from collisions from a speed of only 4 mph (previously: over 19 mph).

This feature combines with DISTRONIC PLUS to become COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, incorporating an additional function: when a danger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124 mph, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slow or stationary vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 19 mph and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.

Established assistance systems, such as Adaptive Highbeam Assist and the Lane Tracking package with Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist, are also available for the CLA.

Designed for dynamism: the chassis and suspension

The chassis of the CLA features a MacPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension, featuring three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are virtually independent of one another. A CLA-specific feature is the flexible decoupling of the rear axle carrier, which benefits ride comfort. Wheel carriers and spring links consist of aluminium, in order to reduce the unsprung masses. Two chassis and suspension set-ups are available: the comfort suspension and the sports suspension for sporty yet comfortable handling. The latter entails lowering of the body by 20 mm (front) and 15 mm (rear).

Irrespective of the selected chassis, all CLA variants come with the Direct Steer system. This electromechanical power steering offers improved feedback to the driver in comparison to conventional systems regarding the prevailing driving conditions and makes an important contribution towards overall efficiency, as the steering assist function only requires energy when steering is actually carried out. It additionally enables various steering assistance functions which are activated by the ESP®control unit. These include countersteering in case of oversteering, corrective steering when braking on road surfaces offering different levels of grip (split-friction braking), mitigation of the extent to which the front-wheel drive influences the steering and compensation of crosswind and road gradients.

All set for the future: powerful and efficient drive

A year ahead of the scheduled introduction of the Euro 6 in 2014, all petrol-engine variants and the top diesel variant of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA already meet the future requirements of this European emissions standard.

The petrol engines with a displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 litres cover an output spectrum ranging from 122 hp in the CLA 180 through to 211 hp in the CLA 250. The two diesel engines combine dynamic low-end torque with the utmost efficiency: the CLA 200 CDI generates 136 hp, with maximum torque of 300 Nm (available from the 3rd quarter of 2013). With a cubic capacity of 2.2 litres, the CLA 220 CDI will offer an output of 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque, emitting only 109 g CO2 per kilometre.

All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission, which reconciles comfort and sportiness in inimitable fashion.

The Mazda CX-5 was the first Mazda to feature the company’s innovative fuel-saving SKYACTIV technologies in powertrains, transmissions, chassis and body.  Completely rethinking traditional engineering to create SKYACTIV enabled Mazda to defy convention and produce a remarkably efficient new SUV which retains the fun-to-drive qualities that are an essential ingredient of the Japanese brand.

“When we introduced the Mazda CX-5 last year, we predicted that it would transform the SUV marketplace in Britain,” comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK.  “Public reaction to the CX-5 has been immensely positive and numerous media tests have shown it consistently beats all class rivals.  We anticipate continued strong demand for our compact SUV throughout 2013 and beyond.”

The Mazda CX-5 model range features an 18-strong line-up with prices starting from £21,395 and rising to £28,995 (OTR).  Customers are offered a choice of three engines (165ps petrol and 150ps or 175ps diesel), manual and automatic transmissions, 2-wheel drive or All-wheel drive (AWD) and two equipment levels – SE-L and Sport, with or without Sat Nav.

Generously specified, Mazda CX-5 SE-L models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, dual zone climate control air-conditioning, Smart City Brake Support and privacy glass, plus front and rear parking sensors.  Moving up the Mazda CX-5 range, Sport grade models are equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Front Lighting System, full leather trim, heated front seats, powered driver’s seat and a reversing camera.

The latest accolade for the Mazda CX-5 follows three earlier awards for the CX-5 compact SUV equipped with SKYACTIV technology – the 2012 What Car? Green SUV Award, the 2012 SCOTY (Scottish Car of the Year) Safety Award, and most recently, together with all-new Mazda6, the 2013What Car? Ultra-low-carbon Award.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV engines, transmissions, chassis and body technologies will be progressively introduced across the Mazda range as other new models reach the marketplace.

Currently, SKYACTIV technology is available on Mazda CX-5 SUV models, and will be available on the all-new Mazda6 (on sale from 25 January).

Are Citroen going "Normal"

In a recent report on the AUTOCAR (3click)  Website I can see why they could be doing this, at the end of the day making money is the only thing that matters, otherwise it will fail, I would rather see Citroen go this route for a few years, have the company turn around, and then maybe put a toe back in the quirky market again.
Every time they say Citroen is Quirky the only cars that come to mind are the 2CV and the original DS, this shows that they have been heading down the normal route for many years, they have had nothing that matches either cars, The DS was light years ahead of it's time and the 2CV was built in an era where you could get away with that sort of thing.
Citroen 2CV
Citroen DS
We have seen old cars get the modern remake, like the Beetle and Mini, again, neither of these cars holds a candle to the originals, in fact the Mini gets berated all the time for being more Maxi than Mini, I love the Beetle, I think it is a great 21st Century version of the original, I cant see a 2CV for todays market without it having to be changed too much to accommodate all the regulations and safety equipment that is required now.
Citroen C4
Citroen DS3
The current DS range of cars are great, they can afford to be a bit daring with these, they are based on the bread and butter C range so costs are reduced, yet prices are higher, this is what they should be doing, more profits, I am not sure about it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the Pug brand having all the losses and Citroen are doing ok.
Citroen SM
In recent times, the only Citroen to have the quirky tag is the Pluriel, a name that some changed to Pleurisy, a lung disorder, but i digress, the Pluriel, was quirky, weird and just downright different from anything else on the market,  from July 2003 to 2010 teh Pluriel was the only car that you could have a full or partial convertible or fully enclosed, the detachable roof bars made this possible, is this the last true Citroen.
I  really have a soft spot for many Citroens, the BX, the Dyane, CX, GS, XM and SM to name but a very few, I just hope that this new road that Citroen are going down is a temporary things to get on a steady track and then we will have something that we can add to the great cars of the past.
Citroen BX
Citroen Dyane
Citroen XM

What do you think, do you think that Citroen are doing the right thing, do they need to go mainstream and forgo the past, and dare I say just be reshelled Peugeots, or should they persevere and continue in the same vein and keep the quirky cars that we have become so accustomed to from Citroen in the past, please feel free to discuss.
