Purpose

I will try my best to provide detailed info on various cars and what is like to live with them, I have already produced a few for Jaguar-car-forums, I will do my best to be unbiased, but it will be hard for some cars. I will re-produce press releases and copy from other motoring news.

GENEVA - STUPID choice for car of the year nominations, typical and usual choices.

At a press conference hosted by Bridgestone Corporation and the New York International Auto Show at the Geneva International Motor Show, the top three finalists for the World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards were announced today.
The overall winners in all categories will be declared at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday, April 17, 2014.
World Car of the Year
From an initial entry list of twenty-four new vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of finalists, the top three contenders for the overall 2014 World Car of the Year title have been revealed.
They are, in alphabetical order by manufacturer:
  • Audi A3
  • BMW 4 Series
  • Mazda3
To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2013 and ending May 31, 2014.
Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of sixty-nine top-level automotive journalists from twenty-two countries around the world.  Each juror was appointed by the World Car Awards’ Steering Committee on the basis of his or her expertise, experience, credibility, and influence.  Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work.   All hold significant stature within their own regions and countries.
World Luxury Car
This is the first year for the World Luxury Car award.    This new category is created to acknowledge higher-priced premium models selling in more limited numbers worldwide. The top three finalists are:
  • Bentley Flying Spur
  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class
  • Range Rover Sport
World Performance Car
This year, we were faced with a vast array of legitimate performers from every price bracket imaginable.  The top three finalists are:
  • Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
  • Ferrari 458 Speciale
  • Porsche 911 GT3
World Green Car
The World Green Car award is presented by Bridgestone Corporation for the past seven years.
Five experts in “green” technology are appointed annually by the World Car Awards Steering Committee to extensively review all documentation and specs associated with each candidate on the list of nominees.  The experts then create a short-list of finalists for review by the sixty-nine jurors in their second round of voting.
The jurors chose these top three finalists for 2014:
  • Audi A3 Sportback g-tron (+ Audi e-gas)
  • BMW i3
  • Volkswagen XL1
The five experts on the advisory panel are in alphabetical order:  Phil Berg (USA - PopularMechanics.com);  Richard Bremner (U.K. Autocar magazine), Claus-Peter Koeth (Germany - automobil-industrie.de);  Yumi Kawabata (Japan-environmental journalist) and John Voelcker (USA - GreenCarReports.com)
World Car Design of the Year
Again, a design panel consisting of five highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors.   The jurors chose the following top three finalists:
  • BMW i3
  • Mazda3
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class
The design experts for 2014 are Masatsugu Arimoto (Japan – freelance design journalist); Silvia Baruffaldi (Italy – Auto & Design magazine); Gernot Bracht (Germany – Pforzheim Design School); Sam Livingstone (U.K.  - Car Design Research and Royal College of Art) and Tom Matano (USA - School of Industrial Design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco)
TMW THOUGHTS
Who on gods earth chose the three cars as WORLD car of the year, The AUDI A3, adds nothing to the range, it is not a revolution, its an evolution of a range that's evolved from each generation, there is nothing in that range to even place it for consideration. The BMW 4 Series, is a 3 series, simple as, nothing to assume it is anything other, the 3 series has just devolved the coupe and convertible from the range and renamed them 4 series, so why should an already OLD car be nominated for this award, it should not. and lastly the the Mazda3, if it had to be one of these three then the Mazda would win hands down, it has been completely renewed with the KODO design language that's made the Mazda6 so successful and this has in turn filtered down to the Hazumi concept, that will spawn the Mazda2.
So, lets think, WHERE is the stunning Jaguar F-Type, The Qashqai, The completely revolutionary (for these modern times) Renault Twingo, or Citroen C-Cactus or DS5L, Peugoet's 308 has been given car of the year elsewhere and been awarded many other gongs, so where is it here ? The Dacia range, or are the judges to snobby to consider a budget brand, yes, I think they are, which is probably why the Fiat 500 MPL was ignored also, What about the latest Lambo, the Huracan is gorgeous, but nowhere to be seen here, yet they pick the Corvette, a car that does not like corners, ha ha, Yes i know things have changed, but the Corvette is another evolution rather than revolting, oops i mean revolution.
These things are always biased, plain and simple, each judge has his or her favourites, whether they be a particular car or brand, we here at TMW love Jaguar Land Rover, and will always shout it from the rooftops, BUT, should we need to we WILL say if we don't like something, and on this occasion we don't like the stupid decisions of the judges and the stupid cars they chose

Congratulations to Volkswagen........

► Europe’s best-selling car is also a big global success
► Four overall titles in five years: Volkswagen model again voted world’s best car

The new Golf just keeps on winning: an international expert jury today named the bestseller from Wolfsburg ‘World Car of the Year 2013’.  The globally sought-after prize was awarded at the New York International Auto Show.  The ‘World Car of the Year’ title is a further milestone in the growing list of awards for the Golf.

Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, explained: ‘We at Volkswagen are all delighted that the Golf has been named ‘World Car of the Year’.  To win this award again shows that the Golf is and remains in a class of its own all around the world.  This car sets new benchmarks again and again, not least in terms of efficiency and environmental credentials. Soon, for instance, the Golf will also be launched as a plug-in hybrid and as a 100% electric car.’

For over 30 years, the Golf has been an established feature of the motoring scene around the globe.  For the seventh generation of the bestseller today’s prize represented its 17th award since being launched in November 2012.  In giving their reasons for the award, the jury said: ‘The Golf is just the right size – it’s spacious, practical and comfortable.  It has a fresh, progressive design, a new range of engines, plus an impressive list of equipment and safety systems.  If there is a car for everyone, the Golf is it.’

It was only three weeks ago that the compact car from Wolfsburg was crowned European Car of the Year.  Further accolades from home and abroad, such as ‘The Best Cars of 2013’, ‘Auto Trophy 2012’ and the ‘Top Gear – All the car you’ll ever need’ award, round off the list of successes.

The ‘World Car of the Year’ jury consists of 66 motoring journalists from 23 countries, who rate new cars appearing on the world market not only for the award, but also in their daily reporting work for millions of drivers and car enthusiasts.  Volkswagen has for a long time been a firm fixture in the ‘World Car of the Year’ awards: the model before the current Golf for instance, won the renowned prize back in 2009.  In 2012, the cherished international trophy went to the company’s smallest car, the up!.  And 2010 was also dominated by Volkswagen: the Polo was crowned overall winner and the BlueMotion models of the Polo, Golf and Passat took the title ‘World Green Car of the Year’.

Over the coming months, further models will be added to the Golf range: the Golf GTI and Golf GTD, two sportier versions, are being launched in the spring.  From the middle of April customers will also be able to order the new, dynamic and spacious Golf Estate.  Following this in the second half of the year comes the new Golf TDI BlueMotion, which sets new standards in terms of fuel consumption and environmental compatibility.

TOYOTA GT86 TRD – IT’S OFFICIAL (Not Diesel)

  •  New GT86 TRD adds impact to Toyota’s sports coupe
  •  First official UK model grade to feature genuine TRD parts
  •  Features include forged 18-inch alloys, front and side skirts, rear spoiler, fast-response quad exhaust and TRD-branded details
  •  Only 250 available in the UK, on sale from 1 March
  •  On-the-road prices £31,495 for GT 86 TRD manual, £32,995 for the automatic

Since its launch last year, the Toyota GT86 has revitalised Toyota’s reputation for building cars that are all about the pure pleasure of driving. Now the hugely acclaimed sports coupe – shortlisted for both European and World Car of the Year awards – gains even more appeal with the introduction of the new GT86 TRD.

Just 250 examples will be available, equipped with genuine design and performance features from TRD (Toyota Racing Development), one of the world’s most accomplished and successful after market engineering businesses.

GT86 is the first UK Toyota for which official TRD parts have been used to create a specific production model grade.

The GT86 TRD , on sale from 1 March, will create a new halo model for the 2+2 coupe range. Both six-speed manual and automatic versions will be available, in a choice of two colours: Pearl White and GT86 Black. On-the-road prices are £31,495 for the manual and £32,995 for the auto.

The focus is on sports styling, but not at the cost of GT86’s essential performance and handling character. The package includes 18-inch cast TF6 alloys, deep front and side skirts, a rear bumper spoiler and a fast-response quad-exhaust system with a rear diffuser to increase stability. The TRD touches also extended to a branded radiator cap and fuel filler cover, while inside the car there is a new TRD gear shift lever.

These items are all in addition to GT86’s established equipment specification, which includes HID headlamps, front fog lamps, limited slip differential, Smart Entry and Start, dual-zone climate control, analogue dials and meters, drilled aluminium pedals, sports seats, scuff plates, cruise control and the Toyota Touch multimedia system.

Acceleration and maximum speed are unchanged at 7.7 seconds for 0-62mph and 140mph for the manual and 8.4 seconds and 130mph for the automatic. There are slight changes in fuel consumption and emissions: 192g/km and 34.9mpg for the manual and 181g/km and 36.2mpg for the automatic (all figures official combined cycle).
