USA - Volkswagen to recall 420,000 models across its range for possible steering wheel issues.

Volkswagen considers the safety and satisfaction of its consumers and passengers a top priority. As such, Volkswagen of America today notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will be issuing a voluntary safety recall affecting the steering wheel clock spring on approximately 420,000 Volkswagen vehicles in the U.S.
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen CC
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Eos
  • Certain 2011-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Golf/GTI
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta
  • Certain 2011-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • Certain 2010 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (German Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (U.S. Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Tiguan

On certain vehicles, the steering wheel clock spring could become contaminated with long hair or long fibers which may cause a displacement of the internal guide loops. When the guide loops are dragged out of position, they may apply tension to the internal flat cable and cause it to tear.

Should the cable tear, the electrical connection to the driver's front airbag may be lost, causing the airbag monitoring indicator light to illuminate. In a crash that warrants a driver front airbag deployment, the airbag will not deploy, leading to a risk of driver injury.

If the airbag monitoring indicator light on a vehicle affected by this recall illuminates, the customer should immediately contact the nearest authorized dealer or qualified workshop in order to have the vehicle inspected/repaired. Customers are advised to see the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more information about the airbag system.

No accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported.  Once affected VINs and the recall remedy have been identified, Volkswagen will notify all owners of affected vehicles and will instruct them to arrange for an appointment with an authorized Volkswagen dealer.

After the record fine FCA now recalls nearly 300,000 Dodge Chargers for possible side airbag issues.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is recalling 284,153 Dodge Chargers for an airbag flaw, a week after the company agreed to pay a record penalty for lagging efforts to address safety defects in millions of cars and trucks.
The action affects four-door Chargers built from May 6, 2010, through June 5, 2014, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website Saturday.

The defect could lead side airbag inflatable curtains and seat airbags to deploy unexpectedly, raising the risk of crash and injury. Airbags could inflate if the car door is slammed too hard, or following "heavy road inputs," NHTSA said.
As of July 10, the company was aware of three minor injuries and no accidents potentially related to the issue. Fiat Chrysler hasn't yet set a notification schedule.
Fiat Chrysler on July 27 agreed to pay a $105 million penalty and instigate a corrective action plan following a U.S. Department of Transportation investigation into how the company handled 23 different recalls to fix defects in more than 11 million cars and trucks.

The company agreed to hire an independent monitor to oversee future recalls. As part of the agreement with regulators, Fiat Chrysler agreed to buy back more than a half-million vehicles -- mostly Ram pickup trucks -- whose defective suspension parts could cause a loss of control, according to NHTSA.
Fiat Chrysler estimates more than 60 percent of those vehicles have already been repaired, leaving fewer than 200,000 eligible for a buy-back.

IRELAND - Volkswagen to recall Polo Models with specific engines.

Volkswagen Ireland is recalling a number of Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TDI Vehicles produced between 2010 and 2014 fitted with the 1.2 TDI 70bhp engine.
The recall affects 1256 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TDI in Ireland.

The reason for the recall is Quality Assurance at Volkswagen AG has found that, in isolated cases, because of the pressure pulsations in the fuel lines and the engine pulsations when driving, vibrations can be transmitted to the cover of the fuel filter. This can crack the filter cover in the area of the supply neck can lead to a fuel smell inside the vehicle and a leak of diesel fuel. There is no cause for concern and letters will be sent to owners of the affected vehicles where they will be asked to arrange an appointment to have the work completed at their authorised Volkswagen service agent. In very cold weather the water may freeze. The driver may be required to apply additional application force to the brakes during sub-freezing driving conditions leading to an additional brake pedal application force requirement which could slow the driver's brake application reaction time and cause a crash.
Remedial Action :Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected to check the brake booster for corrosion and where necessary replace the brake booster. In all cases a shield to protect the brake booster crimp joints from water exposure will be fitted.
