Jaguar Land Rover to launch the new petrol Ingenium range of engines from this summer.

Jaguar Land Rover’s £1bn Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) today celebrated production of its first Ingenium petrol engine, which will debut in vehicles later in the summer. The inaugural petrol engines mark the completion of the first phase of the EMC; a fully flexible, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant that now serves Jaguar Land Rover’s three UK vehicle plants.

Hailed as the most significant new automotive manufacturing facility in the UK in the last decade. Production of the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol Ingenium engine, adds to its line-up, which also includes the ultra-low emission 2.0-litre 150PS, 163PS and 240PS four-cylinder diesel engines. 

The milestone follows an announcement last week that the EMC would manufacture the high-performance 2.0-litre 300PS Ingenium petrol engine – the most powerful four-cylinder engine Jaguar Land Rover has ever produced – for the 18MY Jaguar F-TYPE. 

Trevor Leeks, EMC Operations Director, said: “The start of petrol production marks an important milestone for the plant as we move to providing a suite of ultra-low emission, high-performance petrol and diesel engines to power the full Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle line-up now and in the future.

“Importantly, it also showcases the incredible impact Jaguar Land Rover has had on the local economy with the creation of the 1,400 skilled jobs promised when we opened the plant in 2013. In fact we will be welcoming our 1,400th employee at the end of this month.”

The start of petrol engine production reaffirms Jaguar Land Rover’s strategic investment programme to build skills and capability in the UK. Of the 1,400 people recruited at the plant, more than 80 per cent live within 10 -miles of the Wolverhampton plant, bringing opportunity and prosperity to the region. More than 125,000 hours of training has been undertaken to create a world-class workforce, which includes a former bus driver, a nurse, a beauty therapist and a locksmith. 

Georgia Rigby, an Integrated Manufacturing Specialist in the petrol assembly hall, joined the EMC in February 2016 from the catering industry. She said: “The EMC has quickly grown to be an incredibly important part of this region, celebrated for the jobs created and the quality of the training and career opportunities on offer.

“I was keen to join Jaguar Land Rover after hearing really positive things from my friends who work here. I have been here for just over a year now and it’s been fantastic.”

The EMC has also welcomed more than 50 apprentices and graduates, all on a bespoke powertrain development programme designed to support the design, engineering and production of Jaguar Land Rover advanced engine range. 

Amy Stephenson, a third-year Advanced Apprentice at the EMC, said: “I’ve always been interested in engineering and going to Wednesfield High, which is partnered with the EMC, meant we were encouraged to explore engineering career opportunities. In advance of joining the apprenticeship programme, I had visited the EMC and found it a really inspiring environment. It’s a brand new facility with new people and I’m really proud to be a part it.” 

Since production of the Ingenium diesel engine began exactly two years ago, the EMC has built in excess of 400,000 engines. It has welcomed more than 40,000 visitors including three members of the Royal family, 20 Government officials, including prime ministers, British cabinet ministers and local MPs and more than 3,000 children through its Education Business Partnership Centre. More than 85,000 cups of tea and coffee have been consumed and 14,000 slices of the famous EMC flapjacks have been eaten. Trevor Leeks has taken 3.6 million steps in his role as Operations Director; the equivalent of travelling to the moon and back seven times, and employees have given more than 1,000 hours of volunteering to local good causes. 

In a very short time the EMC has made its mark as the beating heart of Jaguar Land Rover’s UK manufacturing operations.

Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s largest automotive employer, today opened a brand new £650,000 Education Business Partnership Centre at its Engine Manufacturing Centre near Wolverhampton in partnership with Staffordshire County Council, South Staffordshire Council, Wolverhampton City Council and Wolverhampton College. The new Education Centre will deliver school visits, work placements and bespoke education programmes for thousands of young people across the region each year.

The new Education Business Partnership Centre uses a range of cutting-edge technologies such as a holographic table which projects images of Jaguar Land Rover’s Ingenium engines to show how they are manufactured. iPad stations using bespoke modules will be on-hand for students to complete when they return from facility tours and young people will also be able to learn how to control and manipulate miniature robots, similar to those used in the facility.

Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers’ programme promotes learning and engagement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects in collaboration with schools and colleges to inspire young people to consider careers in engineering and manufacturing. Key elements of the programme include dedicated Education Centres in the local areas close to Jaguar Land Rover facilities and imaginative ‘Challenge’ projects for groups of school pupils.

Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s largest premium automotive manufacturer, today showcased its latest plans for further investment in technology and innovation at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Jaguar Land Rover will reinforce its commitment to manufacturing in the UK by increasing the investment in its new Engine Manufacturing Centre to more than £500 million.  

In addition, Jaguar Land Rover will invest £2.75 billion in product creation during the year to support its ambitious growth plans that will see the business introduce eight new or refreshed products during the year.

Additional investment in new Engine Manufacturing Centre

Jaguar Land Rover’s new Engine Manufacturing Centre in the UK is essential to support the company’s long-term strategic growth plans and will be the home for a new generation of technologically advanced, lightweight 4-cylinder low emission diesel and petrol engines.

Reinforcing Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to manufacturing and innovation in the UK, the company will increase its investment in the facility to in excess of £500 million. This will almost double the number of highly skilled engineering and manufacturing jobs at the plant, taking the total number of people who will be employed at the site to almost 1,400.

Speaking at the show, Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Speth said: “Jaguar Land Rover’s new Engine Manufacturing Centre in the UK is a clear demonstration of our business strategy guiding our investment plans.

“Not only does it bring our engine supply back to our production doorstep, but it gives us significant new resource as we continue to innovate with new products and markets.”

The new family of engines is currently under development at Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced research and development facility. It will strengthen and expand the company’s engine range supporting future product development plans. Jaguar Land Rover will deliver high performance engines with class-leading levels of refinement and significant reductions in vehicle emissions, allowing it to compete even more effectively and attract new customers globally.

The state-of-the-art facility is the first in the company’s history to be entirely designed and specified by Jaguar Land Rover. At almost 100,000 sq m, the plant will include an engine testing centre alongside the manufacturing and assembly halls. The building will meet the highest standards of sustainable production and will feature a variety of energy efficiency technologies.

The new Engine Manufacturing Centre will open later this year with the first engines coming off the production line in 2015.

Eight new or refreshed products planned for 2013

Jaguar Land Rover will invest £2.75 billion in product development which will support the launch of eight new innovative products to help achieve its business growth strategy. These include the Jaguar F-TYPE and the introduction of the world’s first nine-speed gearbox in its Land Rover product line-up.

Dr Ralf Speth added: “Since 2008, we have invested in our business and will continue to do so in order to support our strategy for measured, sustainable growth over the next five years.”

Jaguar Land Rover is the UK's largest investor in automotive research and development.  Exporting 80% of its vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover’s success has been worth almost £25 billion in export revenues for the UK economy in the last two years.
