Jaguar land Rover to double it's Wolverhampton Engine facility to cope with the huge demand for the Ingenium range.

Jaguar Land Rover today announced that it is to double the size of its Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) as part of a £450m expansion programme. This latest news from the UK’s leading manufacturing investor is a clear signal of the company’s long-term commitment to Britain. 

Total investment in the site, which opened a year ago, now stands at £1bn making it the most significant new automotive manufacturing facility to be built in the UK in the last decade.

The EMC is home to the high technology, low emission Ingenium engine - Jaguar Land Rover’s first venture into in-house engine manufacturing in a generation. In just twelve months, the Midland based facility has moved from prototype production to full-scale manufacture with more than 50,000 engines coming off the production line.

The Ingenium engine launched initially in the Jaguar XE in April 2015 and was followed quickly by the Discovery Sport, two of the most significant product launches from the British manufacturer accounting for sales of 65,800 in the year so far. Today the EMC has cemented its position as the heart of Jaguar Land Rover’s UK manufacturing operations supplying all three vehicle plants with engines which also power the Range Rover Evoque, all-new Jaguar XF and soon to be launched ground breaking Jaguar F-PACE.

This latest phase in the development of the EMC will see the site increase its operational footprint to 200,000 square metres, supporting capacity uplift as the company continues on its product offensive to deliver more exciting new products to customers.

Today’s announcement will lead to the creation of several hundred new jobs at the Centre in a move which will see Jaguar Land Rover’s global workforce hit 40,000 by next year. In the twelve months since its opening the EMC has seen its workforce reach 700 with further recruitment ongoing. The first eight recruits to be employed for the project in 2011 were apprentices who this month graduated from Jaguar Land Rover’s industry-leading programme and take on exciting roles within the EMC and wider powertrain organisation.

Lauren Quinn, one of the EMC’s first apprentices said: “My time as an apprentice at the EngineManufacturing Centre far exceeded my expectations; it’s given me a future I could have only dreamed of 5 years ago.

“When I started in 2011 I was one of only eight official employees dedicated to the project and the plant was no more than a muddy field. We have come such a long way in a short space of time and I’m proud to have been part of this world-class team and the creation of a facility which will create a legacy for many years to come.”

The Engine Manufacturing Centre is one of Jaguar Land Rover’s four UK based manufacturing facilities*. Together with its R&D centers in Coventry and Gaydon, Jaguar Land Rover has invested £11bn in product creation and facilities, creating more than 20,000 new jobs in the last five years.

Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s largest automotive employer, today opened a brand new £650,000 Education Business Partnership Centre at its Engine Manufacturing Centre near Wolverhampton in partnership with Staffordshire County Council, South Staffordshire Council, Wolverhampton City Council and Wolverhampton College. The new Education Centre will deliver school visits, work placements and bespoke education programmes for thousands of young people across the region each year.

The new Education Business Partnership Centre uses a range of cutting-edge technologies such as a holographic table which projects images of Jaguar Land Rover’s Ingenium engines to show how they are manufactured. iPad stations using bespoke modules will be on-hand for students to complete when they return from facility tours and young people will also be able to learn how to control and manipulate miniature robots, similar to those used in the facility.

Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers’ programme promotes learning and engagement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects in collaboration with schools and colleges to inspire young people to consider careers in engineering and manufacturing. Key elements of the programme include dedicated Education Centres in the local areas close to Jaguar Land Rover facilities and imaginative ‘Challenge’ projects for groups of school pupils.

Land Rover has announced its innovative Ingenium diesel engine will be introduced to the Discovery Sport. Following its highly successful launch in September 2014, the premium compact SUV will now be available with enhanced performance and economy.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine is designed to deliver class-leading torque and power outputs, combined with excellent refinement, reduced CO₂ emissions and lower fuel consumption.

The Discovery Sport’s EU6 compliant Ingenium engine will be available with two power outputs, 150PS and 180PS. The new 150PS derivative in its five seat set-up provides fuel economy of up to 57.7mpg and CO₂emissions from 129g/km, whilst the TD4 180PS in its standard 5+2 configuration delivers 139g/km and 53.3 mpg on the combined cycle.

The arrival of these cutting-edge engines, which will replace the current diesel engine in EU6 markets, ensures Discovery Sport is one of the most efficient premium compact SUVs that both private and Fleet & Business customers can buy.

The new aluminium TD4 engine features lightweight construction, with stiff cylinder blocks and decoupled injectors, which ensures low levels of vibration and noise intrusion, further enhancing the driver experience.

A series of advanced technologies reduce internal friction, improve refinement and enhance overall performance. In addition, Selective Catalytic Reduction and a new low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system significantly reduce both CO₂ and NOx emissions.

The Ingenium-powered Discovery Sport TD4 150PS will be designated an ‘E-Capability’ vehicle, with a blue ‘Sport’ badge highlighting the most efficient variant. These vehicles will also feature 18-inch wheels with low rolling resistance tyres. The final drive gearing and engine calibrations have been optimised to provide the lowest possible CO₂ for the vehicle. E-Capability introduces a five seat option in the UK for the first time, with all TD4 180PS variants remaining with 5+2 seating as standard.

The Discovery Sport is equipped with a range of class-leading safety features, such as a first-in-segment Pedestrian Airbag, Autonomous Emergency Braking (both standard) and a suite of driver assistance features; all of which has led to the Discovery Sport being awarded with a Five Star Euro NCAP rating.

Pricing for the Discovery Sport featuring Ingenium engines remains unchanged whilst the new TD4 150PS engine brings a lower starting price of £30,695 for the manual five seat ‘SE’ trim. Across the range service intervals have been extended from 16,000 to 21,000 miles lowering running costs over the vehicle’s lifetime. 

This coupled with the financial benefits from lower tax and reduced fuel costs, reflects real-world savings for the customer. Furthermore, a number of retail finance options are  available allowing customers to step into a new Discovery Sport from £299 per month for the entry-level SE specification.

In the UK, the revised model line-up adds HSE Black which builds on the existing HSE specification and features the popular Black Pack and privacy glass enhancing the visual appeal in response to positive customer feedback. The HSE Black Auto is priced at £41,250 on the road.

Land Rover’s advanced new Ingenium engines are manufactured in the UK at the company’s new state-of-the-art £500m Engine Manufacturing Centre in the West Midlands, which is set to produce 450,000 Ingenium engines each year.

Since its launch in September 2014, Land Rover UK has received more than 6,500 orders for the new Discovery Sport, and together with Jaguar Land Rover’s range of Ingenium engine, have contributed more than £4bn to the UK economy and created 1,650 jobs.

The new Ingenium engine is available to order now with first customer deliveries commencing from September 2015.
