Old News really, but now it has been proved, the majority of people wont buy a car if their mobile will not Sync.

  • Research shows customers can love everything about a car, but won’t buy if it doesn’t pair with their smartphone
  • Nissan engineer Patrick Keenan is ‘the man with 40 phones’ who ensures seamless connectivity
  • Quality electrical integration key to development of Autonomous Drive technology
Just how much our smartphones rule our lives has been revealed for the first time. Car buyers admit they can like everything about a new model – the styling, price, fuel economy and how it drives – yet will still walk out of the showroom because it won’t connect properly with their beloved mobile phone.

A study*, used by Nissan to understand the importance of developing state-of-the-art infotainment systems in crossovers such as the Qashqai, Juke and X-Trail, reveals:
  • 28% of new car buyers prioritise car connectivity over other features, such as fuel efficiency
  • 13% would not buy a car that’s not connected to the internet
  • 20% would switch to another car brand for better connectivity
  • That rises to 41% for drivers who spend more than 20 hours a week in their car
The research has led to significant investment by Nissan to make sure phones integrate seamlessly – vital as demand for data and downloads expands. Leading the European team is Patrick Keenan… known within Nissan as ‘the man with 40 phones’.
Patrick explained: “Today’s new cars have a lifecycle of five or six years before a new version is launched, but a mobile phone will only be on the market for less than two years before it’s replaced. Keeping cars and phones talking to each other is the crux of my job.”
Patrick’s priority is to ensure that, when it comes to consumer tech, Nissan is always one step ahead of the game. His team uses a network of industry contacts to predict future trends, as well as ensuring that the latest Nissan dashboard hardware and software works with the vast majority of existing and older handsets.
Based at Nissan’s European Technical Centre in Cranfield, UK, Patrick’s desk drawers are packed with dozens of phones, which he uses to develop and fine-tune connectivity. He makes and receives hundreds of test calls a day as he works on future Nissan vehicles.
“My job is to make sure anyone who walks into a Nissan showroom anywhere in Europe doesn’t walk out again because a car they want to buy won’t pair with their phone,” said Patrick.
Part of the future automotive landscape is Autonomous Drive. Nissan is already establishing itself as a global leader in the emerging technology, and ‘ProPilot 1.0’ (single-lane autonomous highway driving) will debut in Europe on the Nissan Qashqai during 2017.
Outstanding connectivity and data integration are vital pieces of the jigsaw, and Patrick is part of a global team of Nissan engineers which is working on developing connected vehicle architectures that have safety and security as their top priority.

New ford Large SUV for Europe, but not for four years

  • Ford Edge Concept hints at the technology, dynamic design and craftsmanship that will define the new large SUV coming to Europe
  • The Edge – already popular in the U.S. and other markets – will add to Ford’s range of SUVs in Europe alongside the new Kuga medium SUV and new EcoSport small SUV
  • Vehicle includes advanced, automated driving technologies such as self-parking and obstacle avoidance systems under development by Ford and previews semi- and fully autonomous driving options
  • Pictures go live here at 5am UK time on November 20

Ford today revealed the all-new Ford Edge Concept to give a strong indication of the technology, design and craftsmanship direction of the company’s new large SUV for Europe.

The Edge Concept also showcases potential advanced technologies, including a push-button and remote-operated parking feature which customers can use from inside or outside the vehicle.

Already popular in the U.S. and other markets, the Edge will be Ford’s first large SUV developed for Europe, one of 25 global vehicles that Ford confirmed last year will go on sale in Europe by 2017.  With the Edge, new Kuga and new EcoSport, Ford will offer a comprehensive line-up of redesigned SUVs.

“The original Ford Edge offered customers in North America a fresh, compelling choice for an accommodating, efficient and safe utility vehicle,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “The next-generation Ford Edge previewed here will build on these cornerstones to create a global vehicle with technology to make life easier, and design and craftsmanship to appeal to customers around the globe.”

Key attributes of the Ford Edge Concept – a sleek and sporty appearance, capability, fuel efficiency and technology that assist the driver – are in line with what customers value around the world, which is driving global growth in the SUV segment.

In Europe, where higher specification models currently account for 70 per cent of all Ford S‑MAX sales, the Edge will meet demand for upmarket, technologically advanced SUVs with great road presence and driving dynamics. SUVs in the region grew from 6.5 per cent to almost 12 per cent of vehicle sales between 2005 and 2012, and Ford projects that between 2013 and 2018 sales of all SUVs in Europe will increase by 22 per cent.

Advanced features to make smarter vehicles and better drivers

Driver-assist technologies and semi-automated features on the Ford Edge Concept hint at a future offering even more intelligent and capable vehicles from Ford. These sensor-based technologies form the building blocks for the future of automated driving, and will help make driving safer and more efficient.

Fully Assisted Parking Aid, a prototype technology which builds on Ford’s Active Park Assist feature to let customers park their vehicles at the touch of a button, or even by remote control. The system can find a perpendicular parking space using ultrasonic sensors and allows customers to wait until the vehicle has pulled out of a tight parking spot before entering.

Ford also has begun a research project designed to refine advanced Obstacle Avoidance systems. The research and development vehicle can issue warnings if it detects slow-moving objects or stationary obstacles in the same lane ahead and – if the driver fails to steer or brake following warnings – the system automatically steers and brakes the vehicle to avoid a collision.

Adaptive steering makes steering at low speeds dramatically easier, and steering in all conditions feel more confident and engaging.

Sleek and athletic exterior design defines Ford Edge Concept

The new Ford Edge Concept exterior is carefully sculpted, fluid and athletic. Strong shoulders add to the feel and appearance of a runner in the starting blocks.  The rearward slope of the grille influences the shape of the bonnet, which is both muscular yet more compact.

The Edge Concept has a new high-tech application of Active Grille Shutters. The shutters automatically open and close to maintain ideal engine operating temperature and maximise aerodynamic efficiency. Unique air curtains on the lower part of the fascia guide air from the front of the vehicle, out through the front wheel wells and down the side of the vehicle.

Premium interior elements include a leather-wrapped and hand-stitched instrument panel, 10in centre display featuring Ford SYNC with Voice Control and Touchscreen, and a dynamic centre stack with mechanical switchgear. High levels of craftsmanship and rich materials unify the Ford Edge Concept. For example, black Nubuck leather wraps the upper instrument panel, centre console and door elements.

“The Ford Edge Concept is the latest example of a utility vehicle that delivers the attributes global customers value most – design; fuel efficiency, driving dynamics, and customer-focused technology to help the driver feel more confident,” Hinrichs said.

USA - Ford Fiesta débuts EcoBoost 1.0 litre engine.

  • 2014 Ford Fiesta with new 1.0-liter EcoBoost® engine achieves fuel efficiency rating of 32 mpg city, 45 mpg highway and 37 mpg combined
  • Fiesta is only vehicle in subcompact class to return 45 mpg highway and produce 120-plus horsepower
  • 1.0-liter EcoBoost makes U.S. debut in 2014 Ford Fiesta

The new Ford Fiesta equipped with the award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost® engine will be America’s most fuel-efficient non-hybrid, gasoline-powered car with a certified 45 mpg rating on the highway, topping Honda Fit by 12 mpg and Toyota Yaris by 8 mpg on the highway.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has certified the 2014 EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta, arriving at dealers later this year, at 45 mpg highway.

The fuel economy rating not only establishes the Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost as best-in-class, but it also outperforms some competitors’ diesels and hybrids on the highway driving cycle. The 2014 Honda Insight achieves 44 mpg highway, while the 2014 Volkswagen Golf diesel with a manual transmission delivers 42 mpg highway.

This also makes the Fiesta the only car in its class that produces more than 120 horsepower and achieves 45 mpg on the highway. Plus, while the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine is officially SAE-certified at 123 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque, it features an overboost function that allows it to make more than 145 lb.-ft. for up to 15 seconds.

“With the new Fiesta 1.0-liter EcoBoost we’re pushing into fuel economy numbers only seen on hybrids and diesels,” said Joe Hinrichs, executive vice president and president of the Americas for Ford. “Coupled with the new Fiesta ST, Fiesta covers the performance-efficiency continuum in the subcompact segment better than any other nameplate in the market.”

Fuel economy is often cited as the No. 1 purchase consideration in the subcompact class, according to Ford research.

The EPA rating is for both the four- and five-door five-speed manual-equipped 2014 Ford Fiesta with SE Manual EcoBoost Package, which is also certified at 32 mpg city and 37 mpg combined.

Automotive journalists named the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine in the 2014 Ford Fiesta International Engine of the Year in 2012 and 2013. The smallest engine in the growing EcoBoost family is increasingly the choice of Ford customers in Europe, where it is now available on five nameplates, accounting for 32 percent of Focus sales and 26 percent of Fiesta sales this year. Robust demand for the 1.0-liter in Europe prompted Ford to double production capacity at its state-of-the-art Cologne, Germany, plant to more than 1,000 engines a day.

EcoBoost technology combines smaller-displacement engines with turbocharging, direct injection, variable valve timing and proprietary Ford software to bring customers outstanding performance and fuel economy. Ford EcoBoost engines deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy than larger-displacement gasoline engines.

Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family now includes the 1.0-liter three-cylinder; 1.5-liter, 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines; and the powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine. EcoBoost technology is available in every region Ford serves worldwide, and will be offered on approximately 80 percent of the company’s global nameplates by the end of this year.

Beyond the efficient new EcoBoost powerplant, Fiesta’s aerodynamic design also helps save fuel. Along with cruise control, the Fiesta SE Manual EcoBoost Package package adds a rear spoiler, side air deflectors, underbody shields, lower grille blockers and low-rolling-resistance tires that, together, decrease the amount of fuel needed to push the car through the air at speed.

In addition to the new leadership claim for highway fuel efficiency, the new Fiesta boasts a best-in-class suite of technologies and features that gives drivers an ideal blend of a connected world and an untethered driving experience.

A new MyFord Touch® system with 6.5-inch touch screen featuring enhanced voice control is now available, providing drivers more options than ever for navigation, communication and entertainment functions. SYNC® AppLink™ capabilities pioneered on the first Fiesta continue to allow access and control of Ford-approved smartphone apps through voice commands and other controls for drivers on the go, helping them keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Turn-by-turn navigation remains part of SYNC Services.

Ford MyKey® is a new feature for Fiesta. MyKey enables parents in particular to encourage safer driving and limit their teenagers’ exposure to risk at the wheel. The system allows owners to configure maximum speed and audio volume limits. It mutes audio until safety belts are fastened and ensures driver aids, safety systems and more vigorous alerts cannot be deactivated when used.

New S-MAX Concept evolves white space appeal

  • New S-MAX Concept evolves white space appeal and reveals Ford’s vision for future sport activity vehicles
  • S-MAX Concept builds upon pioneering style of current model’s “no compromise” ethos with sleek design, detailed craftsmanship, advanced technologies and more flexible interior
  • Innovative health surveillance technology Ford Heart Rate Monitoring Seat and Glucose Level Monitoring join familiar Ford connectivity systems including SYNC with MyFord Touch
  • Advanced safety and convenience technologies include car-to-car communications, Intelligent Protection System with Pre-Collision Assist and Dual-View Display
  • New UK-built 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine promises rewarding driving dynamics

Ford of Europe has revealed the new Ford S-MAX Concept, a sport activity vehicle that takes the style-without-compromise ethos of the popular current S-MAX to new levels with a sharper design, advanced technology and premium craftsmanship.

“When Ford unveiled the Sport Activity Vehicle Concept in 2005 it immediately captured the public’s imagination and inspired us to produce today’s S-MAX, a true white space vehicle,” saidBarb Samardzich, Product Development vice president, Ford of Europe. “Our new S-MAX Concept takes that unique appeal to the next level with Ford’s latest design and technology innovations for a new generation.”

The new S-MAX Concept employs the latest Ford global design language with a high mounted grille, swept-back headlamps and a unique treatment of the vehicle’s lower fascia incorporating design elements that appear to float within the lower front aperture and above the spoiler.

The characteristic S-MAX profile has been honed with the front bonnet sweeping seamlessly into the sharply raked front screen, which in turn flows into the dynamic arc of the roof to create a unique glass graphic. This sleek silhouette surrounds a spacious and versatile interior that offers anything from four to seven-seat configurations.

“S-MAX drivers are passionate and have high expectations – they see their S-MAX as a one-of-a-kind vehicle,” said Martin Smith, executive design director, Ford of Europe. “Our mission was to exceed their expectations in every area while respecting the core of what they love about the S-MAX.”

Further exterior design cues include a feature line running along the flank to create an impression of length and speed, sculptured muscular shoulders, and distinctive headlamps featuring Organic LEDs – the latest lighting that offers greater flexibility in terms of positioning and design, fast response and colour range.

The S-MAX Concept interior is an expression of cutting-edge design, convenience, connectivity, flexibility and craftsmanship.

The front cabin places the focus firmly on the driver. Dynamic shapes and forms combine in a high-set instrument panel that cuts back in the centre console and creates a feeling of space. The door panels are similarly sculptured and an innovative interior roof design maximises the feeling of spaciousness. High quality materials include an ultra-soft leather wrap for the instrument panel, and leather and carbon fibre detailing for the sculptured seats.

“The fine detailing and visible craftsmanship in areas such as the instrument panel air vents reward the driver,” said Smith. “Each and every element of the interior stands up to close inspection with intricate and thoroughly considered design.”

The Ford S-MAX Concept employs leading-edge Ford features and technologies to provide new levels of connectivity and well-being as well as safety, convenience and driving appeal.

The Ford SYNC system sits at the heart of the vehicle’s advanced connectivity features. Ford SYNC with MyFord Touch delivers wi-fi for passengers, supported by a tablet docking station that allows second row occupants to integrate personal devices into the vehicle.

SYNC AppLink enables the driver to voice-control smart phone apps from an expanding list of service providers, which include Spotify, Kaliki, Glympse and Aha – bringing additional music, news, personalised information as well as location and navigation options into the vehicle.

SYNC also enables additional features to improve health and well-being:

  • Ford’s ECG (Electrocardiogram) Heart Rate Monitoring Seat records the driver’s heart rate, delivering long-term heart activity data that would otherwise need to be recorded at medicalcentres, and offers the potential to connect with Ford SYNC to alert remote medical experts to unusual activity or even trigger active safety systems to take over in case of emergency
  • Glucose Level Monitoring devices can be connected with Ford SYNC, for example to warn a parent at the wheel if a sleeping child behind suffers a diabetic attack
Sophisticated communications and sensor systems provide the S-MAX Concept with detailed information about the driving environment, to enhance awareness and safety:

  • Ford’s advanced car-to-car communications technology enables the vehicle to “talk” to similarly equipped vehicles, delivering warnings in the event of oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the motorway, or if a vehicle has stopped in a potentially dangerous situation such as a blind bend in the road
  • Ford Intelligent Protection System with Pre-Collision Assist identifies pedestrians and automatically applies the brakes if a collision is imminent
  • A new generation of Active Park Assist, which steers the vehicle into a parallel parking space, offers perpendicular parking capability, steering the vehicle out of a space and Cross Traffic Alert. This next development in Ford parking technology assists drivers in leaving parking bays and by alerting them to approaching traffic

The interior design offers a range of smart solutions to enhance flexibility and versatility:

  • Thin Seat Technology is employed in the third row of seats, enabling the seats to be raised and lowered in a single action with minimum effort. The second row’s centre seat folds into the vehicle‘s floor for maximum versatility
  • Dual-View Display in the centre console shows different images to the driver and passenger using the same screen, ensuring the driver receives important information without being distracted, while the passenger can enjoy a movie at the same time

Advanced Ford powertrain and chassis technologies ensure that the renowned S-MAX driving appeal is raised to a new level:

  • High-efficiency powertrain features the all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine from Bridgend Plant, S Wales, with turbocharging, twin-independent variable camshaft timing and further advanced technologies to enhance power and fuel economy

“The new S-MAX Concept is not only a unique proposition in terms of its uncompromised styling, versatility and driver-focused dynamics, but also through its innovative technologies delivering superior safety, well-being and seamless integrated connectivity,” said Pim van der Jagt, executive technical leader, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering. “With the S-MAX Concept we aimed to demonstrate just how wide a scope of technologies Ford is preparing for future generations of vehicles and customers.”

Ford outpaces all competition in the US

  • Strong demand on the coasts lifts Ford’s U.S. market share nearly a full percentage point to 16.2 percent through May, outpacing all competitors
  • Ford’s overall growth spans the full vehicle lineup; through May, U.S. overall car sales are up 12 percent, utility vehicle sales are up 18 percent, and truck sales are up 11 percent
  • In addition to design and fuel economy, premium features such as SYNC® and MyFord Touch® are helping to attract new customers across the lineup with take rates double that of Honda and Toyota

“Our gains for the Ford brand in the U.S. are driven by our new products,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “We are absolutely committed to continuing the aggressive introduction of new products throughout our showroom.”

Since the introduction of the new Fiesta three years ago, the Ford brand has achieved the fastest retail share growth of any automotive brand on the west and east coasts combined – up almost 2.5 percentage points compared with 2008 – based on Polk retail registration data. This year, the growth is largely based on share gains for the Ford Escape small utility vehicle and Ford Fusion midsize sedan.

The share gains demonstrate the success of Ford’s push to win over customers by investing more in small cars, midsize sedans and small utilities – in what Ford has dubbed the “super segment.” Particularly on the west coast, Ford vehicles’ standout design and leading fuel efficiency in this segment are helping the company to close the market share gap with Japanese rivals. Based on Ford analysis of Polk retail registration data, Ford’s east and west coast retail market share is 1 percentage point away from Honda.

“What’s so encouraging is the quality of our share gains,” said Jim Farley, executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service and Lincoln. “Customers are increasingly choosing highly equipped vehicles such as our Titanium models. We also see this in customers asking for our in-vehicle connectivity SYNC® and MyFord Touch® systems, which are now in 79 percent of vehicles across the Ford brand – more than double the rate of Toyota and Honda infotainment systems.”

Throughout the U.S., sales growth remains strong across Ford’s product portfolio. Sales of Ford’s F-Series, the best-selling pickup in the United States for 36 years, rose 22 percent through May, topping 70,000 units last month for the first time since March 2007.

Ford also is now on track to be the best-selling utility vehicle brand in the United States for the third straight year. Utility sales, led by the new Ford Escape and Explorer, are up 18 percent through May, with Escape sales on pace to surpass 150,000 vehicles in the first six months of 2013.

Technology, fuel economy and design drive growth
“Ford vehicle technologies are helping to attract new customers and drive growth,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development. “SYNC and MyFord Touch are also helping to deliver higher customer satisfaction.”

Customers that have vehicles equipped with MyFord Touch are more satisfied with overall vehicle quality for most models than those that do not have the advanced infotainment – showing that customers continue to want these technologies. Customers with Fusions that have MyFord Touch have 7 points higher quality satisfaction than other Fusion models. We also have improved MyFord Touch quality by more than 50 percent since launch and plan another upgrade this summer.

Driven by EcoBoost® and hybrids, Ford’s fuel-efficient lineup also is contributing to the company’s U.S. growth. Ford offers seven vehicles that deliver more than 40 mpg, including the new SFE-package Ford Fiesta with best-in-class 41 mpg highway. With the introduction of the new Ford C-MAX and Fusion Hybrid, Ford has also sold more hybrids in the first five months of 2013 than in any full year ever.

Adding to the fuel economy leadership, the award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost will be available on Fiesta later this year. The company also plans to further invest in technologies like Auto Start-Stop and nine- and 10-speed transmissions. These transmissions, to be built in both front- and rear-wheel-drive variants, will be matched with advanced new EcoBoost powertrains to further improve vehicle performance, increase fuel economy and ultimately drive greater levels of customer satisfaction.

“Customers continue to want leading fuel economy in their vehicles, and we’re committed to delivering top fuel economy across our lineup,” Nair said.

The 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor is the first-ever EcoBoost®-powered sport truck that addresses the needs of street truck enthusiasts looking for high-performance V8 power with V6 fuel economy.

The short-wheelbase, regular-cab Tremor goes on sale this fall delivering distinctive looks and performance. The all-new truck couples the style of the FX Appearance Package with an EcoBoost engine and a launch-optimized 4.10 rear axle – the shortest final drive ratio offered in an EcoBoost F-150 – helping provide customers with fast acceleration.

Tremor signals its sport truck capabilities with a custom-inspired FX Appearance Package featuring stealthy, flat-black accents that include unique 20-inch flat-black wheels, stylized bodyside graphics and black badges with red lettering.

Tremor is the only regular-cab F-150 offering a flow-through center console and bucket seats. Interior touches include black leather seating surfaces with red piping, brushed-metal accents and a red-stitched steering wheel. Alcantara seat inserts add texture and style as well.

“The new Tremor gives F-150 customers yet another option to drive a highly capable, distinctive performance truck with features typically found only in the aftermarket,” said Brian Bell, F-150 product marketing manager. “Plus, the Built Ford Tough EcoBoost engine is available for the first time in a short-wheelbase F-150.”

F-150 Tremor is powered exclusively by Ford’s groundbreaking 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which features:

  • 365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm on regular fuel
  • 420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm
  • Twin independent variable camshaft timing for improved performance and fuel economy
  • Up to 90 percent peak torque available from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm
  • An electronic locking rear differential that’s standard for both two- and four-wheel-drive versions helps deliver the power to the pavement by improving traction during takeoff.

Connectivity comes standard on F-150 Tremor with MyFord Touch® powered by SYNC®. Designers have optimized the physical interface for MyFord Touch to accommodate truck users who may be wearing work gloves by providing easy access to climate controls and audio presets on the center stack.

Ford shows it has feelings as Valentines day approaches

On the eve of Valentine’s Day, Ford, the UK’s best-loved car company, used its nationwide mapping data-base to plot the ultimate path to true love with a heart-warming road trip around the 20 most romantic street names in the country.
Joanna Lovett, Ford consumer insight manager, said: “Date Street in London is the perfect place to get a relationship under way, while couples can step it up a gear at Lipscomb Close in Berkshire before fulfilling their destiny and arriving at Wedding Drive in Nottinghamshire.

“As Britain’s best-loved brand, there really is a Ford in every long-lasting relationship. A sporty, stylish Ford Focus ST makes dating a dream, while the flexibility of the Ford B-MAX can make life easier for couples sharing a home for the first time.
“The Ford C-MAX is ideal when a young family comes along, with a Kuga an adventurous alternative. And as the family grows, with seven seats and lots of space needed, the Ford S-MAX, Grand C-MAX and Galaxy are perfect,” she added.

And with 70 per cent of new Ford vehicles having the manufacturer’s SYNC connectivity system as standard, Valentine messages can be received on bonded phones and automatically read out loud.  SYNC also updates phonebook entries, while music files can be browsed by genre, artist, album, song and playlist using voice commands to ensure the perfect playlist.
