Purpose

I will try my best to provide detailed info on various cars and what is like to live with them, I have already produced a few for Jaguar-car-forums, I will do my best to be unbiased, but it will be hard for some cars. I will re-produce press releases and copy from other motoring news.

This month has been a bit of a surprise, sales are up, but the amount of brands that have taken a drop in sales have increased, and some of those brands are a real surprise, Volvo for instance, they had a great 2016, with the new S90 and V90, yet they have taken a big turnaround in January, the same with MG, which increased sales throughout every month last year, and with the GS being an all new model for the first few months of this year, sales have gone down significantly - the new smaller SUV is needed sooner rather than later.

Jeep too had a brilliant 2016, yet the first month of the new year has also taken a nosedive, Why ? has the nation lost interest in the US brand. no, i doubt it, this is one US Auto maker thats selling reasonably well, unlike our home grown mass market brands, Vauxhall, they continue to sell less than the preceeding periods, is this because of the bad press that they are going through ? It is not because of a lack of decent models, they have and are continuing to launch new metal frequently.

Some of Britains other brands, Aston Martin, Bentley and Lotus and MINI are all showing gains over the same time a year earlier, and then you have the three French brands, Peugeot, DS and Citroen, all down, and all with new or refreshed models, even Fiat, Mazda and Honda are all down, so i am not sure why these brands are all under performing, especially with a good range of products to sell.

With the exception of Porsche, all other Volkswagen Group brands have shown an increase, rom an "only just" better than last year to a significant growth spurt, and Volkswagen continues it's turnaround, not only in the UK, but USA as well, where it has been hit hardest after the diesel scandal, Renault too which was hit at the end of last year with possible issues regarding cheat devices has been hit, but with the addition of the All-New Scenic and Grand Scenic should help keep this negative figure from becoming too big throughout the rest of the year, especially as it has a Pick up and refreshed models also due.

So, where does that leave us, the usual suspects are taking the top spots, Fiesta, Focus, Corsa and Astra, The Juke and Qashqai also sit nicely in the top ten, surprisingly there is the Mercedes C-Class and for the first time the Kia Sportage The Golf and lastly the Audi A3, thats the top ten for January, but surprisingly diesel sales have dropped significantly, with people heading back towards petrol, which is no surprise, as petrol cars are cheaper and with modern tech, they are equally if not better in the fuel consumption figures.

So thats the first month of the year.

  • *Citroen and DS Automobiles split sales in May 2015 - Combine both to get an accurate figure when comparing to 2015 sales figures.
  • Grateful thanks for all the Figures supplied by the SMMT.
The month saw sales climb yet again, regardless of the Brexit hassles, this month we start with the two biggest sellers, both Ford and Vauxhall have between them taken a drop of around 25,000 units, which is a huge drop in sales, and both brands have new models either released or about to be released, so the perennial two companies that have been the UK's biggest for decades, are slipping, with the premium brands taking their places.

The next two, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen, are chalk and cheese really, but both are slightly related in the fact that they both manipulated their fuel figures, and both have been hit by it, less so for Mitsubishi, and VW has just turned a corner with positive sales figures, but considering Mitsubishi runs the PHEV sector of the market with a 50% ownership rate, they are still down, maybe the lack of a saloon car since the Lancer has been discontinued has helped drop sales.

At the cheaper end of the market you have Dacia and MG, both have sales growth, with MG slowly but steadily increasing month after month, and Dacia, with a decent range of products that are what the people want, and now they are about to be refreshed, sales should continue to grow, like MG, they will have at least one new model next year, and a refresh of its MG3 model, helping to keep up the momentum.

The Germans are all up on the year, with a couple of brands dipping in the month, it seems that these brands are taking up the slack from the "home" brands which are down significantly.

The French brands have differing sales too, with Peugeot dropping, which, considering they have a number of new and refreshed products either released or about to be released is a surprise, Citroen has dropped again, but add on the DS range, as they are now separated, and combined they are up, and Renault, has a large increase in sales, and this will only continue as they have a raft of new models coming on stream over the next year.

Lastly for this month we will focus on the other British brands, Aston Martin, MINI, Bentley and Lotus, with these four is it a 50/50 with half growing and half dropping sales on the month, MINI and Bentley are both bucking the trend and growing by a significant number whereas Lotus and Aston are both down, but Lutus can change at the drop of a hat as the sales as so low that just a handful can make all the difference, and that brings us to the end of the report for October, we are now well through the year with just two months left to go, and as long as things stay roughly where they are, its going to be another sales growth year, but we all know how things can change.

The plate change month has seen very few changes, a couple of brands have gone from YTD negative figures to positive, Volkswagen has taken a further significant drop in sales, and there seems to be no end in sight as of yet, the UK's best selling brand has again posted negative figures, even with a large amount of new products already released or about to be released, and the other German brands have seen rises over the month and YTD.

Then we have the Paris Motor show, many new cars made their European and world debuts this year, the most significant of which was the Discovery 5, the Now long on the tooth Disco 4 and the lightly adjusted Disco 3 are now so old and in desperate need of  replacement, we now have it in all its glory, in fact they launched it over a 5 million lego brick bridge for the world to see.

Jaguar Land Rover both produced huge growth spurts, and again, there seems to be no end in sight, with the UK, European and world figures all growing over the year and producing record numbers of new registrations, the All-New Discovery 5 has had its launch, and Jaguar are going forward with the new small SUV, and XF sportbrake.

PSA has NOT had a good year so far this year with sales down over the three brands, even though there has been new models, refreshed products additional technology and more, next year should be better with the new C3, 3008, 5008 and the possible launch of the Citroen Aircross, amongst others.

MG continues to grow with the plate change month nearly doubling its sales, and year to date is running at nearly 35% up, the MG3 and MG GS have both proven to be good sellers, next year, if the rumour mill is correct, should see a new small SUV and the MG5, refreshed MG3, with new engines and an Auto too, but i wont be holding my breath, as MG tend to drag out the models.

The month saw a 1.55% growth over the same month last year, so, BREXIT is not hitting hard on the auto sales front, YTD is still higher at 2.56%, the doom mongers have, so far, gotten it all wrong, JLR has been stating that sales will be hit hard, yet they then release record sales figures, so either they know something, or they are after some grant or tax break, or indeed, maybe sales will take a turn for the worse, but i cant see it happening this year, i still expect 2016 to end the year on a high.
