The Tow Car of the year awards have been announced and JLR takes 4 awards with the Discovery the overall winner.

  • 44 cars entered for 13 awards (with 12 separate categories and one overall winner) – all put through rigorous tests on a private test track to provide valuable insights of towing abilities to car buyers
  • Judged by experts from What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines plus The Camping and Caravanning Club, the cars are separated into five weight categories and seven special categories (Best Ultralight Tow Car; Best Petrol Tow Car; Best MPV, Best Pick-Up; Best Budget 4x4; Best Hybrid and the Fuel Economy Award) – and one of these is chosen as the overall winner
  • In addition to the dynamic towing tests, cars are also scored for practicality, driving (solo), plus the costs of buying and owning
  • Exclusive first towing competition test of the new Land Rover Discovery – chosen as the overall winner of The Tow Car Awards 2017 - “As an all-rounder, it sets a new benchmark,” said the judges
  • Congratulations to Audi, Ford, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Skoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo who also won awards this year
  • An extensive archive of full-length reviews of nearly 500 cars tested since the first Tow Car Awards in 2007 is available at: thetowcarawards.com
  • The Swift Group, the UK's biggest leisure vehicle manufacturer, has provided a fleet of caravans for the testing every year since the competition started 10 years ago. Any standard stability aids fitted to the caravans are disabled or removed for the testing to ensure judges feel any instability
The results of the Tow Car Awards 2017, organised and judged by experts from What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines and The Camping and Caravanning Club, reveal this year’s top cars for towing, with a unique archive of full reviews of nearly 500 cars tested since the first Tow Car Awards in 2007 available at www.thetowcarawards.com to help new and used car buyers make the most informed choices.
To create the most informative towing reviews, the 44 cars entered for this year’s competition were judged for a total of 13 awards by separating them into five categories according to their kerbweight (from up to 1400kg to 1900kg+), seven special awards according to the type of vehicle, and then one overall winner.
Every vehicle tows a caravan or trailer weighted to 85 per cent of the car’s kerbweight (or its maximum towing limit, if lower) and is put through a rigorous test programme in the safe surroundings of a private proving ground in Warwickshire. It’s not just about their outright performance though, as each car is also scored for its practicality and costs of buying and owning.
This year’s winners range in size (and price) from the mighty, new Land Rover Discovery to the more humble Hyundai i30 hatchback, with a mix of hybrids, MPVs, estates and 4x4 models in between.
This was the first towing competition for the new Land Rover Discovery and it continued the success of the previous model by winning its 1900kg+ weight class as well as being chosen as the overall winner. The judges said: “As an all-rounder, it sets a new benchmark.”
Jaguar and Škoda collected two awards each for the successful combination of performance and practicality for their latest models. The new Jaguar F-Pace was another car tested for the first time at these awards, while the XF saloon won its weight class again. The latest Škoda Octavia and the Superb rose to the top of their weight categories again, with the Superb also winning the Fuel Economy Award, while Ford, Audi, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo also achieved category wins.
The full list of categories and winning vehicles for the Tow Car Awards 2017 are as follows:
  1. Up to 1400kg: Škoda Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI 150PS SE L DSG
  2. 1400-1549kg: Škoda Superb 2.0 TDI 150PS SE L Executive

  13. Overall Winner: Land Rover Discovery 3.0 Td6 HSE
The caravans used for the towing exercises are supplied by the UK’s biggest manufacturer, the Swift Group. Any stabiliser hitches as standard are disabled or replaced with basic ones to ensure the judges feel any instability created during the rigorous test programme which is designed to push the brakes, handling and engines of the cars to their limits.
This includes testing high-speed stability beyond the legal limit, slalom and emergency lane-changes, acceleration and braking tests, plus a hill start on a 1-in-6 slope. The cars are also scored on how well they can accommodate a typical load for a touring holiday, plus their buying and running costs, and what they're like to drive when not towing based on What Car?'s expert reviews of each model.
Commenting on this year’s results, David Motton, Tow Car Editor of Practical Caravan magazine said: “All the winners of the Tow Car Awards 2017, whether they are big or small, have shown us that they’re particularly good as an overall package to tow, own and live with every day.
“There can only be a limited number of winners, but as you can see from the full reports on www.thetowcarawards.com, many of today’s best-selling cars also performed extremely well. However, when it came to choosing this year’s overall winner it had to be the new Land Rover Discovery as it sets a new benchmark as an impressive all-rounder.”
TV presenter and President of The Camping and Caravanning Club, Julia Bradbury said: “The Camping and Caravanning Club is delighted to have co-produced the Tow Car Awards for the 11th year. These results give really useful information for anyone choosing a car to tow with, to make touring as safe and relaxing as possible.
“A big thanks to all the judges and our members who volunteered to help make the event such a success,” Julia continued.

TOW CAR AWARDS - New Mondeo wins category at this years awards ceremony.

Ford's all-new Mondeo has been judged the best petrol-powered tow car by experts at this year’s Tow Car Awards. The Camping and Caravanning Club worked with Practical Caravan and What Car? magazines to assess this year’s field of 37 tow cars.
They judged the cars’ ride and handling both towing and solo, as well as practicality and buying and owning.

The all-new Ford Mondeo, on sale this year, triumphed with its smooth and economical mid-range 1.5-litre turbo-powered EcoBoost petrol engine.  Mondeo’s EcoBoost range also includes the award-winning 125PS 1.0-litre engine and the top-end, high-output 240PS 2.0-litre version.
David Motton, Practical Caravan’s Tow Car editor, said:  “Ford’s EcoBoost engine really is a star. It may not have as much pulling power as the diesel equivalent but, with 177lb ft (240Nm) of torque, it's noticeably stronger in the middle of the rev range than most petrols. But at the same time it's also a lot easier on the ears than most diesels."
Anthony Ireson, Ford of Britain marketing director, said:  “EcoBoost is another gem in our freshest-ever vehicle range, which we are delighted that towing experts have recognised in the fast-selling new Mondeo.”
Priced from £19,995, the all-new Ford Mondeo range includes petrol and diesel in five-door and estate bodystyles, plus front- and all-wheel drive.  An optional manually retractable tow bar with Trailer Sway Control can be specified on all series.

TOW CAR AWARDS - Volkswagen Passat Estate takes three titles including overall TowCar Of The Year.

Volkswagen has become the first manufacturer to claim three overall Tow Car Award titles, with the new Passat Estate winning two categories as well as the top title, and proving once more that it’s a true family estate with real pulling power.
The Tow Car Awards are a joint venture between Practical CaravanWhat Car? and The Camping and Caravanning Club. The awards were judged by a team including staff from Practical Caravan magazine,What Car? and the technical department at The Camping and Caravanning Club.

Each car goes through a series of towing tests at the MIRA proving ground, including 30-60 mph acceleration, 30-0 mph braking, a hill start and an emergency lane-change test.  Cars aren’t rated solely for their towing ability; What Car?’s expert road test team scores each car for regular driving, safety, running costs and value for money.
The Camping and Caravanning Club’s technical team check practical details such as boot space, how easily extension mirrors can be fitted, and whether the spare wheel provision is suitable for towing.  The aim is to find cars which are great to tow with, but which are also good value and easy to live with in everyday driving.
Winning the 1,700-1,899 kg weight category was the new range-topping Passat Estate 2.0-litre BiTDI with standard 4MOTION four-wheel drive and DSG gearbox.  Commenting on the win David Motton, Tow Car Editor of Practical Caravan, said: ‘The four-wheel-drive version of the Volkswagen Passat Estate makes towing seem easy.
Whether your priority is pace, stability or practicality, the Passat has the lot.  The BiTDI engine delivers the punch of a heavyweight boxer, but it's the Passat's stability which really matters.’
The winner of the 1,400-1,549 kg weight category and overall title was the 2.0-litre TDI 150 PS Passat Estate in SE Business guise with DSG gearbox.  According to Motton and the team of judges: ‘The latest Volkswagen Passat may have a lower kerbweight than its predecessor, but it punches above its weight with a caravan in tow.
Stability is the quality we look for above all others in a tow car, and the Passat delivers. At a steady 60mph it's rock solid.’  Volkswagen is the only manufacturer to have won these awards three times, with the Passat Estate also claiming top titles in 2007 and 2011.  It has also won category titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Motton added: ‘When deciding on our overall winner we don't just look at a car’s towing credentials.  Since the Tow Car Awards started in 2007 we've prided ourselves in choosing cars which are just as good in everyday driving as they are when towing, and the Passat Estate fits that bill.  It's comfortable, refined, spacious and economical.  In fact, the Volkswagen does just about everything well.’
The new Passat and Passat Estate went on sale in the UK in January and have since won a string of awards, including Europe’s Car of the Year trophy.  Key accolades which contribute to the car’s towing credentials include a range of four torque-strong and economical EU6 diesel engines, advanced safety, comfort and convenience features, and options such as Trailer Assist which makes light work of manoeuvring a trailer to help even the most experienced tow car driver.

TOW CAR AWARDS - The Å KODA Octavia has taken victory in the ‘Up to 1400kg’ category

  • Octavia Hatch 2.0 TDI 150PS SE Business wins ‘Up to 1400kg’ class in annual Tow Car Awards
  • Expert judging panel from The Camping and Caravanning Club, What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines
  • Third win in a row for the Octavia
The Å KODA Octavia has taken victory in the ‘Up to 1400kg’ category at the Tow Car of the Year Awards, as judged by a panel of experts. It is the third year in a row that an Octavia has taken home a trophy in the Tow Car Awards, following overall victory in 2013.

The Å KODA Octavia which won is the 2.0-litre TDI 150PS SE Business model. With an on-the-road price of £20,535, the 2.0-litre TDI SE Business model returns a combined economy of 70.6mpg with CO2 emissions of just 106g/km, meaning it comes in for 19 per cent in Benefit in Kind taxation. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, Amundsen touchscreen satellite navigation with DAB digital radio and Bluetooth telephone connectivity and rear parking sensors.
Judging for the Tow Car Awards is rigorous. Judges included editorial staff from Practical Caravan and What Car? magazines, along with technical experts from The Camping and Caravanning Club. Each car goes through a series of towing tests, including acceleration, braking, hill starts and an emergency lane-change test.
Cars aren’t just rated for their towing ability; the What Car? team score each car for regular driving, safety, running costs and value for money. The Camping and Caravanning Club’s technical team check practical details such as boot space, how easily extension mirrors can be fitted, and whether the spare wheel provision is suitable for towing. The aim is to find cars which are great to tow with, but which are also good value and easy to live with every day.
Speaking on behalf of the panel, David Motton, Tow Car Editor, Practical Caravan, said "The Skoda holds on to its crown as our favourite tow car weighing less than 1400kg, and does so in some style. As you'd expect of a former overall winner, it tows beautifully. It's also immensely roomy, with more than enough space for tall adults to travel comfortably in the back."
Alasdair Stewart, Brand Director for Å KODA UK, commented: "The Octavia is an exceptionally practical family car with broad appeal. This latest award shows that it continues to offer an ideal combination of credentials for towing."

TOW CAR AWARDS - Land Rover Discovery wins its category at annual Tow Car Awards

  • Land Rover Discovery wins its category at annual Tow Car Awards
  • Voted number one in 1,900kg+ sector by expert judges
  • Eighth class win in nine years for iconic SUV
The outstanding performance of the Land Rover Discovery has been honoured for the eighth time at the highly respected Tow Car Awards 2015. The Awards, which have been running for nine years have honoured the Discovery as the heavyweight tow vehicle of choice for all but one year. It is a feat unmatched by any other rival in any category to date, underlining the exceptional capabilities of the British-built vehicle.

The iconic SUV was voted best in class in the 1,900+kg category by a panel of expert judges. The awards are presented by The Camping and Caravanning Club, in association with What Car? and Practical Caravan.
The judges selected the popular 3.0-litre SDV6 SE Tech model for this year’s series of rigorous towing tests. They commented: “The Land Rover Discovery’s tally now stands at eight class wins in the nine years of the Tow Car Awards. New rivals keep taking a shot at the title, but for now the Discovery remains on top. It’s an absolutely superb car to tow with.”
This year, close to 40 cars across various classes were assessed by the judges, with fierce competition in every sector. Each vehicle was assessed for acceleration, gearing and stability while towing on straight-mile and slalom courses. A challenging circuit of awkward cambers and uneven surfaces was also undertaken, with stopping distance measured after heavy braking.
All cars are rated for performance without a towed load, and there are further assessments of cargo-carrying practicality, running cost, reliability and safety.
Jeremy Hicks, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover UK, commented: “Whether it’s horseboxes, boats or industrial trailers, the towing community has always been an integral part of the Land Rover family. To win this award for the eighth time illustrates perfectly the strengths of our brand – a desirable mixture of power, practicality and innovative engineering that continues to prove popular with our loyal customers.”
Land Rover’s years of experience with, and feedback from, those who tow makes the Discovery the perfect vehicle for customers’ varying needs. As a result, several advanced technologies are available to enhance the towing experience and make life easier for owners.
Trailer Stability Assist detects the presence of a trailer and, above 37mph, monitors its behaviour. Selective braking of the appropriate wheels automatically helps to correct any stability issues.
Also available is Towing Assist, a reversing aid which is included with the optional Surround Camera System. Towing Assist predicts the trajectory of both vehicle and trailer during reversing manoeuvres, enabling safe and easy coupling and providing a predicted path for the vehicle when reversing by superimposing coloured lines over the image on the touch-screen.

TOW CAR AWARDS - The New Citroën C4 Cactus picks up a category win in the Tow Car Awards 2015.

The practical & distinctive Citroën C4 Cactus has followed in the footsteps of the Grand C4 Picasso last year, by picking up a category win in the Tow Car Awards 2015. This latest honour adds to a host of high profile accolades achieved by the model since its launch in September 2014.
The New Citroën C4 Cactus was thoroughly tested against a number criterion by an expert team of judges from Practical Caravan, The Camping and Caravanning Club and What Car? at the MIRA proving ground in April.

The judges rated the highly-acclaimed C4 Cactus for aspects including high-speed stability, emergency braking, hill-starts and everyday practicality, naming it the winner in the ‘Ultralight Tow Car’ category.
The unconventional family hatchback set a high standard, with the judging panel commenting; “If you tow a trailer tent, and don't want or need a bigger car, the Citroën C4 Cactus is a great choice. The Citroën shows a reasonable turn of speed, but stability is more important than pace when towing and this is where the Cactus really presses home its advantage.”
Mike Wilson, Head of Citroën Marketing – C4 Cactus, collected the award earlier this evening at a ceremony held at The Sculpture Gallery, Woburn Abbey. Wilson said; “It’s brilliant news that the C4 Cactus continues to set the benchmark in this highly competitive segment. This Tow Car Award adds to the impressive catalogue of achievements for this ground-breaking new Citroën model and ably demonstrates its credentials as a highly versatile and practical family hatchback.”
The Citroën C4 Cactus is available from just £12,990 MRRP OTR and offers a simple yet stylish approach to design, with the latest in-car technologies and an efficient range of engines – a combination that represents the future direction for the Citroën brand.

TOW CAR AWARDS - The 2015 Mazda CX-5 has been voted best Tow Car in the 1,550-1,699kg category.

  • Mazda’s CX-5 wins at the Tow Car Awards for the second consecutive year.
  • The 2015 Mazda CX-5 voted best Tow Car in the 1,550-1,699kg category.
  • Mazda CX-5 2.2D 175PS AWD Sport Nav awarded by the experts at Practical Caravan, the Camping and Caravanning Club and What Car?
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 has been voted best Tow Car in the 1,550-1,699kg category by the experts from Practical Caravan Magazine, What Car? and the Camping and Caravanning Club.
Selected from a field of 37 cars, the CX-5 was rated for its everyday driving ability, price, running costs and future resale value by What Car?, while the experts from the Camping and Caravanning Club and Practical Caravan Magazine subjected it to demanding tests that assess the cars behaviour when towing, and looked at practical features that make a tow car driver’s life easy.
Assessed pulling a caravan weighted to 85 per cent of its 1,688kg kerbweight, the CX-5 was tested for stability at 60mph, subjected to awkward cambers and bumps on a twisty handling circuit and measured for agility and steering responsiveness on slalom.

The judges also measured stopping distances, while other important tests included a hill-start on a 1-in-6 incline and measurement of emergency lane change stability. There’s also a focus on cabin practicality, luggage capacity and factors such as the ease of towing mirror fitment.
Testing the 2015 Mazda CX-5 2.2D 175PS AWD Sport Nav, David Motton, Tow Car Editor of Practical Caravan Magazine, commented “a mid-life update has made the Mazda CX-5 into a really superb tow car. It was already a stable tow car, but now it’s even better. Even crosswinds don’t seem to upset the Mazda CX-5, and better still, our practicality judges were just as impressed as the drivers.
The 2015 Mazda CX-5 features significant interior trim and standard equipment specification upgrades, as well as exterior enhancements. The standard equipment specification of every model in the CX-5 line-up has been enhanced through the addition of manual front passenger seat height adjustment, an electronic parking brake and a coming home/leaving home headlight function.
Mazda’s latest Multimedia Commander with separate volume dial for safe, intuitive interactivity and infotainment control features a new 7-inch, full-colour, centre console touch-screen incorporates DAB radio, two ports for USB connectivity and MZD Connect. Paired with a smartphone, MZD Connect makes it easier to take advantage of functions such as internet connectivity and access to social networking services.
Top-of-the-range Sport Nav models benefit from new exterior features including 19-inch Gunmetal alloy wheels, LED headlights including LED daytime running lights, and LED foglamps. On board, an already comprehensive Sport Nav standard equipment specification is further bolstered by a new Integrated Navigation system which offers greater accuracy, improved search features and three years of free map updating.
Perfectly suited to towing, the practical and upmarket Mazda CX-5 2.2D 175PS AWD Sport Nav benefits from Mazda’s advanced four-wheel drive system, which features variable torque distribution and precise slip detection, giving a front/rear torque split ranging from 100/0 to 50/50 percent, ensuring the CX-5 delivers the traction and grip needed for reassuring motoring in wintry conditions and confident towing.
The Tow Car Awards winning 2.2S 175PS AWD Sport Nav costs £29,395, while the £800 Safety Pack adds Adaptive LED Headlights, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane-keep Assist System and Rear Smart City Brake Support. Useful when towing, Mazda Radar Cruise Control^ is another optional feature available on the award winning 175PS Sport Nav diesel.

Discovery wins TWO awards in the recently announced Caravan Club Tow Car Awards ceremony.

  • Discovery HSE Luxury model claims a brace of class wins in The Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year Awards
Land Rover Discovery is celebrating its second tow car honour within three months thanks to recognition in The Caravan Club’s Towcar of the Year Awards. The club’s judging panel voted the Discovery HSE Luxury the top model in two hard-fought classes – for all-wheel-drive vehicles over 1800kg and for vehicles priced in excess of £40,000.
In June, Land Rover Discovery claimed its fifth consecutive victory and seventh class win in eight years in the Tow Car Awards, a record unmatched by any rival.

At the Caravan Club’s London awards ceremony, the judges’ citation reported: “Towing is effortless with Land Rover Discovery. The V6 3-litre TD engine, mated to an impressive eight-speed auto gearbox, propels you up, down and round at speeds that a large outfit such as this would initially appear incapable of reaching. Greenhouse-sized windows give excellent rear visibility too.”
The Caravan Club tested 39 cars for this year’s competition, with five expert drivers assessing each car’s towing abilities including acceleration, braking and coping with hill starts. Two judges assessed the vehicles’ usability, and two further experts performed acceleration tests.
Land Rover Discovery boasts several intelligent technologies which help to enhance the towing experience. Trailer Stability Assist detects the presence of a trailer and, above 37mph, it monitors the behaviour of the trailer and uses selective braking of the appropriate wheels to help correct any problems. Towing Assist, a next-generation reversing aid, is also included with the optional Surround Camera System. The Towing Assist technology predicts the trajectory of both vehicle and trailer, guiding when coupling a trailer and providing a predicted path for the vehicle when reversing by superimposing coloured lines over the image on the touch-screen.

2015 Annual Tow Car Awards from the Caravan Club are announced.

The Volkswagen Group continued its dominance of The Caravan Club’s prestigious Towcar of the Year competition by lifting the trophy for a seventh consecutive year.
The competition’s 39 entries were split into six price classes and two weight categories, ranging from the Dacia Logan MCVLauréatedCi at just £12,114 to the all-singing, all-dancing Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury 3.0 SDV6 at a shade over £60,000.  The diverse entry list included small 4x4s, saloons, estates, hatchbacks, SUVs, large off-roaders and an electric/petrol hybrid.
Each towcar endured the same gruelling series of trials – not only being judged on its towing performance over a testing circuit at the Millbook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, but also for its ‘caravanability’ – ie how much typical holiday gear and caravan paraphernalia it could accommodate, how easily it could be hooked up to a caravan and the quality of towing information contained in its handbook.  Value for money (initial purchase price and running costs) was also added to the marking equation.

Seven driving judges put the cars through their paces and evaluated each one’s dynamic abilities and ergonomic qualities.  Tests included a mid-range 30-60mph acceleration assessment, high-speed towing appraisal, reversing, emergency braking, ride and handling evaluations as well as hill-stop and restart trials.
Price Class wins in the competition went to: the Fiat Panda 4x4 1.3 MultiJet; Peugeot 308 SW PureTech 1.2 e-THP stop-start; SEAT Leon ST FR 2.0 TDI; Volkswagen Golf SV GT 2.0TDI DSG; Volvo XC60 D5 AWD R-Design NAV; and the Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury 3.0 litre SDV6.
From these Class winners, the SEAT Leon ST forged ahead to take the overall victory, earning comments such as, “the SEAT’s engine kept its torquey feel and produced punch whenever and wherever it was required”, and “even at increased speeds, it remained unruffled and composed”.
All-Wheel Drive vehicles competed in two additional categories – ‘All-Wheel Drive Under 1800kg’ and ‘All-Wheel Drive Over 1800kg’. First place in the lighter category went to the Volvo XC60 D5 AWD R-Design NAV,  while the Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury 3.0 litre SDV6 took the honours in the heavier group.
The results of the competition were announced at The Caravan Club Towcar of the Year Awards ceremony, held at the Royal Automobile Club in London on 24 September.
For the 2015 competition, the Judges’ Special Award went to the Mitsubishi Outlander GX4hs 2.0 PHEV – the PHEV hybrid’s innovative electric/petrol technology was assessed shoulder to shoulder against more traditional vehicles.
Grenville Chamberlain, Caravan Club Chairman, commented, “It was great to see such a diverse variety of vehicles entered into this competition.  Whether people want to tow a small trailer tent or a large, twin-axle caravan, there is a vehicle choice to suit all needs.  On behalf of The Caravan Club, our congratulations go to all the winners, and a special mention to SEAT for their victorious Leon.  I am sure we will be seeing competition entrants on Club sites in the near future.”
