McLaren Special Operations (MSO) introduces defined range of options.

  • Five tiers identify the levels of bespoke work available to from MSO as the company embraces an unprecedented period of growth
  • Differing levels of personalisation offer complete tailoring of any McLaren model through MSO Bespoke, MSO Heritage, MSO Limited and MSO Programmes
  • New Defined range to include a line of series options available on all new McLaren models
McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has announced a range of available series options for the McLaren 650S, and Asia-only 625C, under the newly established ‘MSO Defined’ division. This forms the first of five tiers of personalisation and support offered by MSO, catering for the needs of all McLaren customers, and joins MSO Bespoke, specialising in one-off models; MSO Limited, producing limited-edition series production cars; MSO Heritage, focused on the maintenance and storage of historic cars; and MSO Programmes which includes the McLaren P1™ GTR.

“There is a strong desire for drivers to personalise their cars and I’m convinced that the introduction of MSO Defined line will prove popular amongst our customers,” explains Paul Mackenzie, Executive Director of McLaren Special Operations. “Every McLaren is unique but now, with more choice than ever before, we are enabling our customers to truly express themselves through their vehicles.”

MSO DEFINED

The MSO Defined category of personalisation includes an aerodynamic kit, designed to enhance the purposeful design of the groundbreaking McLaren 650S, to subtle carbon fibre interior upgrades. The exterior styling can be modified with an addition of a carbon fibre rear diffuser and extended side door blades that premiered on the limited-edition MSO 650S earlier in the year.

Weight-saving options in the form of a full carbon fibre rear deck and mirror arms are also available, while new interior options include extended carbon fibre shift paddles and a redesigned instrument cluster with Formula 1™ inspired shift lights mounted on the instrument cluster that have been created in response to a popular demand from track day enthusiasts.

MSO BESPOKE

MSO Bespoke provides an almost limitless level of customisation to McLaren owners, including unique paint, leather and stitching colours, stand-alone upholstery and body changes to create truly bespoke vehicles.

Since launching the 650S earlier this year, 20 percent of vehicles produced at the McLaren Production Centre have included a degree of MSO Bespoke content. This number rises to approximately 95 percent for the McLaren P1™, with each one of the 375 examples being unique to its owner in some way.

The division was also responsible for the McLaren X-1, a one-off car that had to be specially designed and engineered, including on-road testing and homologation.

MSO LIMITED

The limited-run and special edition examples of the 650S and 12C produced by MSO are designed, developed and produced under ‘MSO Limited’.  Models produced include the McLaren 50 12C and 12C Spider, built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the McLaren brand in 2013 and, more recently, the MSO 650S, which debuted at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

MSO HERITAGE

McLaren Special Operations, as it is known today, was launched at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2011. However, a division was first set up as the McLaren Customer Care Programme in the 1990s to service, maintain and personalise the McLaren F1 for owners. This service continues at McLaren, and is now managed by the MSO Heritage team, offering an unrivalled level of knowledge and expertise on the McLaren F1, and also working with Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren models

MSO PROGRAMMES

Finally, the recently-launched MSO Programmes division encompasses the upcoming McLaren P1™ GTR Driver Programme. Each car will be built, maintained and prepared by MSO in advance of the exclusive track days held at the world’s most iconic Formula 1™ circuits.

McLaren Automotive posts improved profits, income, and sales, with even more to come !

  • Profit before tax - £4.5m
  • Operating profit - £12.4m
  • Turnover - £285.4m (up from £266.6m)
  • Investment in future models - £70.6m (up from £68.1m)
  • Turnover and profit both expected to grow in 2014
  • McLaren Automotive’s next model, codenamed P13, to go on sale during 2015
  • Limited run of track only McLaren P1™ hypercar confirmed for introduction in 2015
  • McLaren 650S international sales already strong – more than 1000 orders received
McLaren Automotive made both an operating and pre-tax profit for the first time in 2013, during only its third year of car production. This is a significant achievement for an independent British car company operating in such a highly competitive global market.
McLaren Automotive’s improved profitability proves the company’s longer term business model, which is able to invest continuously in R&D in order to develop and sell the world’s most exciting and technologically advanced high performance cars.
McLaren Automotive has also confirmed that its next all-new sportscar, codenamed P13, will be available before the end of 2015 and will take its range into a lower price-point - making McLaren more accessible, while retaining its commitment to excellence, performance and innovation.
P13 will be a comfortable, usable, and beautiful mid-engined two seater sportscar, built around a carbon fibre chassis. It will be available in more than one derivative and once fully on sale, McLaren Automotive’s total annual production will increase to around 4,000 units per year.

At the other end of its range, McLaren Automotive has also confirmed that it will produce a limited run of track-only editions of its award winning McLaren P1™ hypercar.  Available only to clients who have ordered one of the 375 road legal versions, the car will be the company’s most powerful car yet.  It will also be its rarest.
Commenting on the results, Ron Dennis, Chief Executive and Chairman of the McLaren Group and Chairman of McLaren Automotive, said: “Since launch, McLaren Automotive has outperformed predictions and rivals, setting new benchmarks in the sportscar market with a range of models that push boundaries through innovation and technology, while remaining true to the core values of the brand. The latest financial results, and returning a profit so early in the life of the company, are a real credit to the tremendous team within McLaren Automotive, and reflect their hard efforts.”
Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive of McLaren Automotive, added: “McLaren Automotive has already developed a deserved reputation for producing the world’s most exciting and technologically advanced high performance sports cars.  But these results demonstrate that we have also established a profitable long term business, which is able to invest heavily in R&D, recruit the best people and ultimately create world class products. In a highly competitive market, we have laid solid foundations for future success.”
He added: “We are now focusing upon the road ahead. The McLaren 650S is already selling extremely well with over 1000 orders received and P13 is a very exciting project, which will help us to access new markets and customers, grow our sales volumes and ultimately increase both revenue and profitability. I am confident that by maintaining our commitment to innovation and excellence McLaren Automotive has an extremely bright future.”
As a result of on-target global car sales, McLaren Automotive’s revenues rose by £18.8m to £285.4m in 2013. The company delivered 1,359 12Cs and 36 examples of the McLaren P1™ during the year.
In line with its long term business plan, the company has continued to invest in the infrastructure, personnel and new technology required to support future growth. McLaren Automotive’s spend on R&D and the development of new models increased by £2.5m to £70.6m in 2013.
When McLaren Automotive was launched, it promised to unveil a new car or derivative every year. It continued to deliver on that promise during 2013, with the launch of the McLaren P1™ at the international Geneva Motor Show. The most technologically advanced car ever produced in the UK, just 375 will be produced all of which sold out within six months of being announced.  Production began on schedule last September and more than 100 are now in customer’s hands.
In 2013 McLaren Automotive also continued to expand its geographical reach, opening 13 new showrooms and growing its global network to 50 retailers in 28 international markets.  This included opening four new retailers in China in: Shanghai; Beijing; Guangzhou and Chengdu.  The company plans to open another 20 retailers during 2014 and to have over 100 locations in its global network by 2018.
McLaren Automotive began 2014 with the launch of the new 650S Coupé and Spider.  This was the first time in its short history that two models had been launched simultaneously across all its 28 global markets. The company is on track for even greater success in 2014, and the recent appointment of Jolyon Nash as Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing, will further strengthen the team when he joins on 1 July 2014, bringing a wealth of experience of the luxury market.
The Group expects to continue delivering strongly against its ambitious growth plan during 2014. Total global sales volumes are expected to remain broadly in line with 2013. However, both turnover and profit are predicted to increase, driven by sales of the McLaren P1™.

GENEVA - McLaren 650 Spider joins coupe at Geneva

  • New McLaren 650S Spider just as engaging on road and track as fixed-roof Coupé
  • 0-100km/h (62 mph) takes 3.0 seconds, 0-200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.6 seconds
  • No reduction in torsional strength due to unique carbon fibre MonoCell chassis; similar weight, too
  • Two piece roof can be raised or lowered in less than 17 seconds on the move at speeds up to 30 km/h (19 mph)
McLaren Automotive has now released images and full information for the convertible version of its latest model, the McLaren 650S, unveiled at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show. The McLaren 650S Spider is a no compromise open-top high performance sports car offering the same performance, handling and driver enjoyment, with the addition of a two-piece retractable hard top. The latest model is shown in Tarocco Orange, a new addition to the McLaren colour collection, developed with technology partner AkzoNobel.

The McLaren 650S Spider is mechanically identical to the 650S Coupé and is fitted with the unique McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine, producing 650PS (641 bhp) and 678 Nm (500 lb ft). This means a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint of 3.0 seconds, identical to the Coupé, and 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in 8.6 seconds, only 0.2 seconds shy of the fixed-head model. Maximum speed is 329 km/h mph (204 mph). Fuel consumption and emissions remain the same for the 650S Spider, returning 24.2 mpg (11.7 l/100km) on the EU combined cycle and 275 g/km.

Most competitors do not offer high performance iterations as convertibles due to the compromises that invariably plague open-roof cars. These models will be heavier and have substantially less torsional rigidity, to the detriment of handling and ride.

The carbon fibre MonoCell chassis at the heart of the McLaren 650S requires no additional strengthening or reinforcing in open-top guise, and gives the 650S Spider identical handling and ride, and virtually identical straight-line performance figures. The overall weight of the 650S Spider is 1,370 kg (dry), an increase of only 40 kg over the Coupé, with this additional mass coming from the Retractable Hard Top and roof mechanism, and is less than any other car in its class.

The two-piece Retractable Hard Top can be automatically raised or lower in less than 17 seconds, and can be activated while stationary or at any speed up to 30km/h (19mph).
As with the 12C Spider, the 650S Spider uses a heated glass rear window, operating independently of the roof. With the roof down, the rear window acts as a wind deflector, reducing cabin buffeting. Roof up, the rear screen can be lowered to allow more engine noise – and driving drama – into the cabin, and for a semi-open top driving experience even when it is raining. When down, the roof is stowed beneath a body-coloured hard tonneau cover incorporated in the twin rear buttresses. With the roof raised, the area beneath the tonneau cover can be used as additional luggage space.

Rather than being a stripped out road racer, the 650S Coupé and 650 Spider models are fitted with a high level of luxury equipment as standard. Carbon ceramic brakes sit behind unique ‘650’ lightweight alloy wheels shod with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres, IRIS satellite navigation with Bluetooth telephony, DAB digital radio in Europe (SIRIUS satellite radio in North America), wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control are all fitted as standard, and the cabin is fully trimmed in Alcantara.

SNEAK PEAK - New McLaren 650S

McLaren Automotive will reveal at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show the latest addition to its range of groundbreaking supercars - the McLaren 650S.

Designed and developed to offer the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement, as well as dramatic yet beautiful styling, the McLaren 650S is the result of 50 years of competing, and winning, at the highest levels of motorsport.  It takes learnings from both the 12C as well as the sell-out McLaren P1™ and will be positioned between the two on McLaren Automotive’s supercar grid.

Saturday, 26 October 2013

Mclaren P1™ facts and figures as first car handed over.

  • 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in just 2.8 seconds
  • Braking from 100 km/h to zero takes just 30.2 metres – less than a third of the recognised stopping distance
  • The McLaren P1™ reaches 300 km/h (186 mph) in 16.5 seconds – a full 5.5 seconds quicker than the iconic McLaren F1
  • Bespoke tyres and braking system, developed in conjunction with technical partners Pirelli and Akebono, ensure optimised performance
  • First customer takes delivery of groundbreaking McLaren P1™ from company’s headquarters in Woking, England

Following an extensive testing and development programme, McLaren Automotive has now confirmed the performance figures for the McLaren P1™ in the latest stage in the launch of the groundbreaking model. These figures show that the third model in the range accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds.

Groundbreaking levels of performance

The McLaren P1™ has been designed from the outset with one clear goal: to be the best driver’s car on road and track. The confirmation of the performance figures underlines this, and gives further insight into the potential of the latest model from the Woking-based firm.

Fitted with a twin powerplant powertrain generating 916 PS (903 bhp) from the highly efficient 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and the lightweight electric motor, the McLaren P1™ storms from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, and hits 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds – quicker than many hot hatches reach half that speed.

The relentless acceleration, delivered as a result of the instant torque offered by the electric motors and the optimised turbos, sees the McLaren P1™ reach 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds. By way of a benchmark, this is a full 5.5 seconds quicker than the legendary McLaren F1. Top speed is electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph).

Despite these impressive figures, the McLaren P1™ still returns 34.0 mpg (8.3 l/100km) on the EU combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 194 g/km. The electric motor offers a range of 11 km (6.8 miles) in full electric mode on the NEDC cycle, which sees emissions drop to zero.

The braking figures are equally as impressive for the McLaren P1™, with the levels of performance provided by the bespoke Akebono system. The specially formulated carbon ceramic discs, coated in silicon carbide, can bring the McLaren P1™ to a halt from 62 mph (100 km/h) in a distance of just 30.2 metres. This figure is even more impressive when compared to the recognised stopping distances, which suggests that more than three times the distance – 102 metres – is required to bring a car to a halt from 100 km/h (62 mph).

An overview of the performance figures for the McLaren P1™ is as follows:

In a year of celebration for McLaren, this week has seen another significant milestone in an important chapter of McLaren Automotive with the first customer delivery of the groundbreaking McLaren P1™. Series production of the latest addition to the McLaren range commenced over the summer, and the first car, finished in a striking Volcano Yellow and contrasting visual carbon fibre, rolled off the bespoke production line at the end of September – a fitting tribute during the month of the 50th anniversary celebrations.

The first example of the McLaren P1™ was collected from the McLaren Technology Centre by its UK-based owner.

“We designed the McLaren P1™ from the outset with one clear goal: to be the best driver’s car on road and track. The confirmation of the performance figures underlines this.

“I am very proud of our Woking based team and everything they have achieved with this ambitious project.  The handover of the first McLaren P1™ is another milestone in our 50 year history,” commented Mike Flewitt, CEO, McLaren Automotive Ltd.

The production process

A total of 375 examples of the McLaren P1™ will be produced, and will be hand-built in the state-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre (MPC) in Woking, England. This £40 million Foster + Partners designed facility is an ultimate embodiment of McLaren values, fusing precise production techniques with hand craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail.

The McLaren P1™ is custom-built by a carefully selected team of 82 technicians in a four-stage assembly process. From start to finish, the build takes 17 days of skilled work. Once running at full capacity, the McLaren P1™ line will see one car completed each day, with production due to run until mid-2015.

Stage 1: Structural Assembly

The bespoke manufacturing process commences with the preparation of the carbon fibre MonoCage chassis. The one-piece MonoCage weighs just 90kgs, and includes the integrated roof structure, an integral roof snorkel and air intake ducts, as well as providing a fully sealed compartment for the battery.

Stage 2: Painting

In total the McLaren P1™ consists of seven lightweight panels, all of which are made from carbon fibre – front and rear clamshells, bonnet, doors, front and rear bumpers. Due to the extended painting processes involved, and to minimise disruption to the facility within MPC used for the 12C and 12C Spider, each McLaren P1™ is prepared and hand painted in a dedicated paintshop in the McLaren Technology Centre while the chassis structure is being prepared.

The complete set of body panels for each McLaren P1™ is painted together to ensure a perfect colour match. This process takes three days, including surface preparation of the carbon fibre panels to ensure flawless paintwork on every single car.

Stage 3: Trim Assembly

The fully prepared carbon fibre MonoCage chassis and the hand-painted carbon fibre body panels are brought together on a dedicated production line within the MPC. This ten-stage process is the most recent addition to the MPC, and sees the sub-assembly of battery, front sub-frame, doors, rear clamshells and bumpers fitted as it moves along the line.

Two dedicated McLaren technicians work on each of the production stages for the McLaren P1™, with each step taking a full working day to complete.

Stage 4: Final Assembly

As each car reaches the end of the McLaren P1™ line, it is then subjected to the same rigorous testing regime and sophisticated quality control procedures as the 12C and 12C Spider models to ensure it meets the required quality and performance levels. This phase of production takes a total of seven days to complete.

For the McLaren P1™, this includes a full day shakedown at a proving ground, testing every element of the car’s performance. The McLaren test drivers and a team of technicians run through the different settings and modes to examine and verify the performance ahead of final delivery to the customer.

Each example of the McLaren P1™ is then put through the Monsoon Test, in which 16,000 litres of de-ionised recycled water is released on to the car to ensure all seals are correctly finished. A complete underbody check and diagnostics review is then carried out, before the final dispatch audit confirmation.

McLaren enters China to boost increasing sales further

  • McLaren Automotive begins selling its range of innovative, high performance supercars – the 12C, 12C Spider and McLaren P1™, in China
  • The company has appointed retailers in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Guangzhou
  • McLaren has held the first in a series of events celebrating the brand’s official entry into China
  • McLaren Automotive has officially commenced trading in China from this week.

The entry of McLaren Automotive into the major Chinese market has begun with the establishment of four new McLaren retailers in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, highlighting the continued progress of this exciting global car company.

China is the world’s number one automotive market and access to its growing base of consumers will provide a major opportunity for McLaren.  In time, it is anticipated that the Asia Pacific region will account for one third of global sales for McLaren, with China contributing a growing number of orders.

McLaren Automotive is a new and highly ambitious car company, and entry into China is the latest in a list of exciting and bold milestones it has reached.  In only its third year of trading, McLaren Automotive has already established a strong retail network in the majority of the world’s mature markets, with the four new retailers in China making 45 locations globally.

The company set itself an ambitious target from the outset, to launch a new model or derivative every year from launch and, despite challenging economic conditions, has kept this promise and is firmly on track with future plans for a full product range. Despite the global economic downturn, McLaren continues to meet its sales targets, selling over 1,400 cars in 2012; 80% of which were exported from the UK.

The groundbreaking 12C and 12C Spider models set new standards of innovation and capability in the high performance sportscar market, and the company recently celebrated the manufacture of the 3,000th 12C at the purpose-built McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England.

The McLaren P1™ is the latest model to be launched by the British brand, and sets new benchmarks for innovation and performance. Following an extensive development programme, it has now entered production, with the allocation for the Asia Pacific region already filled.

Ron Dennis, Chairman of McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive said: “Today, I am very proud to be able to represent McLaren as we mark the formation of McLaren China.  In recent decades, McLaren has grown to become a world class, highly innovative technology company that is never afraid to challenge convention. This approach has been applied to all our road cars, which utilise cutting edge technologies to deliver inspirational performance, coupled with high levels of efficiency. China is one of the most exciting and dynamic markets in the world where we will make every effort to be well received.  Our entry into China is an important day for McLaren and represents a significant milestone in the development of the company.”

Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive added: “Entering the Chinese market is both a huge honour and a major opportunity for McLaren Automotive, and it highlights the continued development of the company. When McLaren Automotive was established it was set some very challenging objectives. By bringing three groundbreaking cars to market, developing a truly world-class manufacturing facility, and establishing a global retailer network, we have more than met those challenges and laid solid foundations for what, I believe, will be a very bright future.”

McLaren hosted a high profile launch event, ‘McLaren Uncovered’ in Shanghai today, which was attended by the company’s senior global management. The four retail locations will now open across China throughout the next month – Shanghai (12 September), Beijing (20 September), Chengdu (24 September), and Guangzhou (27 September).

McLaren unveils latest GREAT campaign liveried car with Jenson Button

The McLaren Group has today unveiled its latest GREAT campaign liveried car, which has been designed to support and inspire British innovation.

The high-tech McLaren 12C is emblazoned with the GREAT campaign’s graphics and the message ‘Innovation is GREAT’. As well as demonstrating McLaren’s ongoing support for the campaign, it is intended to highlight the UK’s world-leading and highly innovative technology sector.

The car was launched at the McLaren Technology Centre with the support of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver, Jenson Button.

The GREAT campaign aims to reaffirm Britain’s international reputation and deliver long-term economic benefits through additional tourism, investment and education.  The McLaren 12C is the ideal vehicle to showcase the UK as a hotbed of innovation – a key theme of the GREAT campaign.

Built entirely in the UK at the McLaren Production Centre, the car incorporates ground-breaking technologies taken directly from McLaren’s 50 years of experience in Formula 1, including a one-piece carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, which forms the core structure of the car and weighs just 75kg. The GREAT 12C is powered by a British made 3.8 litre V8 twin turbo engine, one of the most efficient high-performance engines ever built, and features numerous cutting-edge technologies including Brake Steer and a Proactive Chassis Control System.

The McLaren 12C demonstrates that there is a global market for British innovation; McLaren has established a global sales network and 80% of the cars it makes are exported.

Martin Whitmarsh, CEO of McLaren Group said:“McLaren is proud to be an ambassador for British innovation and to support the GREAT campaign.  The UK has led the world in the development of technologies which have changed people’s lives, from the jet engine to the internet.  I believe that we are now seeing a resurgence of that pioneering spirit and McLaren is playing its part.  The McLaren 12C is a tangible embodiment of technological creativity and I hope with that with its GREAT livery it will help draw international attention to what the UK’s high-tech industry is capable of, and inspire young people at home.”
The ‘Innovation is GREAT’ 12C, whose union-flag livery was designed by McLaren Racing’s graphics team, will be on tour over the coming months. After making its first appearance on 3rd September at an exclusive ‘McLaren 50’ screening of Formula 1 film ‘RUSH’, it will then lead a procession of rare cars from Buckingham Palace to Marlborough House Gardens in the St James’s Palace Concours d’Elegance.

The tour will be complimented by a social media campaign on McLaren Group’s Twitter page (@McLarenGroup) where we are asking the public to tweet where they have seen the car and upload their photographs using the hashtag #GREAT12C.

This is the second GREAT car that McLaren has produced and follows the 12C GT3 which made its debut at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The McLaren Group strives to be at the forefront of global innovation, whether in Formula 1, producing the world’s most exciting road cars or increasingly applying our expertise to support industries as diverse as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, public transport and energy.
