USA - The FCA US Warren Truck Assembly Plant has been awarded bronze status for its efforts in implementing World Class Manufacturing

  • Michigan truck plant becomes 20th North American facility to achieve bronze in World Class Manufacturing methodology
  • Nearly 14 million award-winning trucks have rolled off the line since 1938
  • Award recognizes progress toward becoming World Class
The FCA US Warren Truck Assembly Plant has been awarded bronze status for its efforts in implementing World Class Manufacturing (WCM). It becomes the 20th North American facility to reach the milestone award and brings to seven the number of plants that have been designated bronze in 2016.

The 78-year-old suburban Detroit truck plant earned bronze after receiving a minimum of 50 points in 10 technical and 10 managerial pillars following a two-day independent audit held on Oct. 24 and 25.

The plant demonstrated clear WCM know-how and competence through employee-conducted pillar presentations and a review of projects implemented across the shop floor. The designation recognizes the long-term commitment of a workforce to making significant changes that can secure the future of a facility.

“Reaching bronze is a significant achievement as it confirms the workforce’s understanding of the WCM methodology and its dedication to implementing best practices that will make our facilities the best in the world,” said Brian Harlow, Vice President – Manufacturing, FCA North America. “At Warren Truck and across our global manufacturing footprint, our employees now have the tools and resources to eliminate waste by improving processes, increasing productivity, and improving quality and safety, while at the same time putting dignity into the workplace.

“Our Warren Truck workforce is to be commended for embracing WCM as a way of life,” said Harlow. “Together with the support and involvement of our UAW partners, we will ensure that the Company meets its long-term business goals and provides a secure future for all employees.”

WCM, first implemented by Fiat in 2006 and introduced to Chrysler Group as part of the alliance between the two companies in June 2009, is a methodology that engages the employees to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants, promoting a strong sense of ownership. Plants awarded for their efforts also have a role in accelerating the implementation of WCM throughout the organization as coaches and mentors.
During an audit, zero to five points are awarded for each of the 10 technical pillars, which include safety, workplace organization, logistics and the environment, and for each of the 10 managerial pillars, such as management commitment, clarity of objectives, allocation of people, motivation of operators and commitment of the organization. A score of 85 would indicate World Class.

Currently, there are three North American plants at a silver status, having been elevated from bronze after receiving a minimum of 60 points during an audit. Silver is awarded to plants that have taken a preventative approach to implementing the WCM methodology throughout the facility. The silver plants are Windsor Assembly (Ont.) awarded in March 2014; Dundee Engine (Mich.) recognized in May 2015; and Toledo Assembly Complex (Ohio) designated in May 2016.

In addition to Warren Truck, the 16 other facilities that currently hold the WCM bronze designation are:
  • Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant (Mexico)
  • Saltillo South Engine Plant (Mexico)
  • Trenton Engine Complex (Mich.)
  • Warren Stamping Plant (Mich.)
  • Indiana Transmission Plant II (Kokomo, Ind.)
  • Kokomo Transmission Plant (Ind.)
  • Kokomo Casting Plant (Ind.)
  • Toluca Assembly Plant (Mexico)
  • Sterling Stamping Plant (Sterling Heights, Mich.)
  • Brampton Assembly Plant (Ontario, Canada)
  • Tipton Transmission Plant (Ind.)

Seventeen-inch satin black wheels tie-in with the blacked out front for added continuity and visual appeal. Factory features include a 5.7-liter HEMI® engine paired with an eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, transfer case and front suspension skid plates, black tubular side steps, spray-on bedliner and a tri-fold tonneau cover emblazoned with the Ram logo.
Optional parts and accessories are available at the dealership for those who want to take personalization of the Mopar ’16 Ram Rebel to the next level. In the performance arena, a cold air intake and cat-back exhaust system free up the flow of the HEMI V-8 engine while adding an aggressive sound.

USA - Popular Mechanics has included the 2016 Ram line up in their annual Automotive Excellence Awards

Popular Mechanics has included the 2016 Ram line up in their annual Automotive Excellence Awards in the May issue, on newsstands today. Compared to all other full-size pickups, the Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 offerings had the best combination of technology, performance and value.

"The objective for Ram is to build the best trucks in the market, and earning a spot in Popular Mechanics’ Automotive Excellence Awards is recognition of rapid innovation and exclusive features across Ram’s entire pickup line," said Mike Manley – Head of Ram Truck Brand, FCA Global.

"The pickup truck segments are brutally competitive and Ram is committed to leadership with best-in-class titles, including America’s most fuel-efficient full-size pickup at 29 mpg, most towing capacity at 31,210 pounds and the most torque at 900 lb.-ft."

Ram is the winner in the “Best Truck” category and, according to the article: “Top to bottom, this is the model to beat.” The editors go on to say, “The Ram is the only pickup with a ZF-designed eight-speed automatic transmission, a device so manifestly excellent that Rolls-Royce and Range Rover put the same in their cars, too.

That transmission can be bolted to a satisfying 305-hp V-6, a beastly HEMI® V-8, or a 3.0-liter diesel, the only small diesel you can get in a full-size truck.”

In the introduction to the article, the editors of Popular Mechanics describe the process of choosing this year’s winners: “We’ve reflected on and debated the things we’ve seen and expect to see as we cover this industry.

We’ve visited factories, interviewed engineers and driven everything at least once, mostly without incident. Now, we anoint the standouts: the vehicles – and a few of the options, add-ons and standard features – that remind us why we love the automobile.”

The 2016 Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Awards also name the Car of the Year, Best SUV, Best Sports Car, Best Electric and several other categories.

USA RECALL - FCA - 2015-2016 Ram 1500 pickups to replace the modules that control their electric power steering

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 442 trucks in the U.S. to replace the modules that control their electric power steering (EPS) systems.

An investigation by the Company determined a small group of control modules, a supplied component, may have been contaminated during the manufacturing process.

Over time, this condition may make the vehicle more difficult to steer because of intermittent or complete loss of power steering assist; however, steering capability remains.

FCA US is unaware of any related injuries or accidents.

Affected are certain 2015-2016 Ram 1500 pickups. An additional 59 vehicles are being recalled in Canada, along with seven in Mexico and six outside the NAFTA region.

Customers will be advised when they may schedule service, which is free of charge.

FCA US urges customers to follow the instructions on all recall notices. Those with questions or concerns may call the FCA US Customer Care Center at 1-800-853-1403.
