After the successful World Launch of the Avista, Buick takes the 2016 EyesON Design Award for the concept.

he Buick Avista concept received the EyesOn Design Award for Design Excellence – Concept Car at a ceremony today at the North American International Auto Show.
It was the second consecutive year Buick received the award, which was bestowed on the Avenir concept in 2015. EyesOn Design – a benefit for Henry Ford Health System’s Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology – recognizes the best production and concept vehicle designs making their worldwide debut in Detroit.

“Design has always played a large role in Buick's rich history and recent success,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director, Buick Global Design. “The Avista concept has been a labor of love by the team of designers, sculptors, engineers and talented craftspeople, including our UAW partners, who created this beautiful statement of Buick design. Avista represents the future essence of Buick design.”
A sleek, sweeping proportion is the foundation for this vision of a contemporary grand tourer, with a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-6 driving the rear wheels. The Avista’s uninterrupted body lines stretch front to rear, suggesting motion – resembling Buick’s design language introduced on the Avenir concept and carried into production on the 2017 LaCrosse.
Like the exterior, the Avista’s 2+2 interior is defined by flowing, uninterrupted lines conveying elegance through simplicity – with intense technical and surfaces details, in everything from 3D-printed door and seat trim to a future vision of Buick’s IntelliLink, with touchscreen controls on a widescreen instrument panel display.
Exposed carbon fiber and aluminum accents throughout reinforce the precision of the performance-oriented driving experience.

USA - Buick launches an all new concept, the Avista, a 2+2 coupe that pushes the brands ethos further.

Ahead of its public debut at the North American International Auto Show, Buick today revealed the Avista concept – a 2+2 coupe that pushes the brand’s contemporary design ethos and rekindles its historic performance roots.

A sleek, sweeping proportion is the foundation for this vision of a contemporary grand tourer, with a 400-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-6 driving the rear wheels and a driver-focused cockpit offering a comfortable, connected center of control.

“The Avista embodies the dynamic soul of Buick,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing. “It is a modern expression of the brand’s heritage of sophisticated performance, communicated with beautiful elegance.”

The Avista’s uninterrupted body lines stretch front to rear, suggesting motion – resembling Buick’s design language introduced on the Avenir concept and carried into production on the 2017 LaCrosse. The absence of conventional B-pillars between the doors and rear side windows enhances the flowing profile.

“There is elegant simplicity in the Avista’s surfaces, which speak to the purity of the car’s performance, and a timeless beauty that’s a hallmark of Buick design,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director Global Buick Design. “It was designed to capture the spirit of the perfect drive.”

Marking the front and rear, Buick evolves its signature wing-shaped lighting with “soft curtain” elements that create illuminated “halos” around lamps’ edges, suggesting a three-dimensional shape and sculpture.

Their design forecasts the evolution of Buick’s production lighting features, while the Avista’s grille features the brand’s new winged tri-shield insignia set against a three-dimensional mesh background.

Additional exterior features include:
  • A 110.7-inch (2,811 mm) wheelbase and 63-inch (1,601 mm) front/62.9-inch (1,598 mm) rear tracks for sporty proportions and an aggressive stance
  • Twenty-inch aluminum wheels with color-toned accents match the car’s Dark Sapphire Jewel exterior
  • Front fender vents with chrome accents evolve Buick’s signature fender ports.
Performance-oriented, modern cockpit

Like the exterior, the Avista’s 2+2 interior is defined by flowing, uninterrupted lines conveying elegance through simplicity – with intense technical and surfaces details, in everything from 3D-printed door and seat trim to a future vision of Buick’s IntelliLink, with touchscreen controls on a widescreen instrument panel display.

The center console also incorporates touchscreen controls and extends to the rear seating area. Open side storage compartments built into the front of the console are enabled by the new Electronic Precision Shift, similar to the 2017 LaCrosse.
A Superior Blue foundation color echoes the exterior and is complemented with Mist Gray leather seating inserts, console trim and door trim.

Exposed carbon fiber and aluminum accents throughout reinforce the precision of the performance-oriented driving experience. The fading pattern on the seats, console and doors were inspired by waves receding at a beach’s edge.

“Waves, whether from the sea or in the sand, are all about motion and flow,” said Nesbitt. “That’s exactly what this concept is all about – flowing design and the purity of the driving experience.”

Buick designers enhanced the passengers’ sensory experiences with next-generation QuietTuning and air-quality control, including advanced noise cancellation technology, ionic air purifiers and aromatherapy.

The Avista also advances Buick’s legacy of turbocharged performance, which carries forward in the 2016 Regal GS and other models. Similar to the 2017 LaCrosse, the concept twin-turbocharged 3.0L V-6 features fuel-saving Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and Stop/Start technology to complement its power with efficiency.

The engine is backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and Magnetic Ride Control delivers more precise body motion control.

FAST FACT: The Buick Y-Job, introduced in 1938, is widely recognized as the auto industry’s first concept vehicle.

EURO NCAP - The New Vauxhall Astra gets high scores in all categories to achieve the full five star award.

  • High scores across all categories assessed by Euro NCAP
  • First compact car with front camera in volume sector
The all-new Brit-built Astra has been awarded the maximum five stars by Euro NCAP in its latest safety ratings published today. The compact five-door hatchback from Vauxhall achieved high scores in each of the categories assessed – adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist.

The new Astra realises Vauxhall’s safety objective for all passenger cars and light commercial vehicles of optimised protection in real traffic and collisions, achieved by the integration of its passive and active safety systems.
The interior of the Astra is designed to create the largest possible survival space in crash conditions. To accommodate the impact force in case of a crash, the front, sides and rear of the passenger compartment are surrounded by energy absorption zones that deform and protect in a controlled manner.
Inside the passenger compartment, the new Astra features a three-part approach for the airbag system consisting of front airbags for driver and co-driver, thorax-pelvis side airbags and full-length curtain airbags for the first and second seat rows.
Combined with advanced retractors/pre-tensioners with load limiters mounted on the vehicle body, lap pre-tensioners attached to the seats and seat-integrated anti-submarining ramps, the Astra ensures maximum passenger protection and reduces injury potential.
The Astra’s high standards of adult, child and pedestrian protection are complemented by state-of-the-art active safety and driver-assistance systems.
Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist not only warns the driver, but also applies a gentle nudge of corrective steering if the Astra should stray out of its lane. Frontal collisions can be avoided or mitigated thanks to Automated Emergency Braking, Integrated Brake Assist, Forward Collision Alert and Following Distance Indication.
The collision warning system is optimised by a row of flashing red LED lights, which are projected onto the windscreen in the driver’s field of vision if the distance to the vehicle in front gets too small and a collision is imminent.
The data for these systems is collected by the new Astra’s front camera, installed at the top of the windscreen. The Astra is the first compact car with a front camera from a volume manufacturer and it is also the first Vauxhall providing assisted braking with data received only from the camera.
The Astra’s active safety and driver assistance systems are completed by Side Blind Spot Alert (which uses the ultrasonic sensors of the Park Assist system to warn of hidden dangers when changing lanes, overtaking or turning corners) and IntelliLux LED matrix headlights. This advanced lighting technology automatically adapts to the current traffic conditions and always offers the best possible illumination.
In addition to driver, occupants and other road users, the Astra also offers “five star” protection for the driver’s wallet and driving licence. Traffic Sign Assist continuously monitors the data provided by the mono camera and compares it with information from the embedded navigation of the Navi 900 Intellilink infotainment system. Speed limits are then displayed to the driver in the instrument cluster, reducing the risk of speeding tickets.

Vauxhall Corsa connects drivers with extensive infotainment offer, and one not to be missed.

  • IntelliLink with smartphone integration as standard from Energy trim
  • User-friendly interface via touchscreen with easy-to-navigate menu
  • Choice of navigation applications including Apple Maps and Google Maps
  • OnStar turns Corsa into powerful Wi-Fi Hotspot
Vauxhall is introducing its IntelliLink and OnStar systems to the small car segment, providing drivers with outstanding connectivity and entertainment with state-of-the-art in-car infotainment technology.
The Vauxhall Corsa is now available with the latest generation IntelliLink infotainment system as standard (excluding Sting and Sting R models), which only made its debut in the new Astra a few weeks ago.

R4.0 IntelliLink easily integrates smartphone functions via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and is compatible with devices from Android 5.0 Lollipop and Apple iOS 7.1 (from iPhone 5).
Vauxhall OnStar, standard on SE, Limited, Black Edition, Red Edition and VXR Corsa models provides occupants with a stable and powerful internet connection.
The personal connectivity, service assistant and integrated 4G/LTE architecture turn the Corsa into a Wi-Fi Hotspot, while numerous additional services make driving more relaxed.
“We do not just offer drivers of larger cars the opportunity of enjoying the latest connectivity and infotainment technology. We are making it available across our entire product portfolio with very attractive offerings,” said Simon Oldfield, Vauxhall’s Sales and Marketing Director.
“The new R4.0 IntelliLink system with smartphone integration available for the Corsa is the perfect example. This system along with OnStar enables fast, stable and extensive internet access for every Corsa occupant.”
R4.0 IntelliLink with smartphone integration
The R4.0 IntelliLink system offers drivers a USB and Bluetooth interface for audio streaming and viewing photographs, videos and films, as well as the ability to complete a phone call via the hands-free module. All accessible through the seven-inch colour touchscreen, Vauxhall’s latest generation infotainment system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Bringing the smartphone applications of each occupant into the car, the Vauxhall infotainment technology immediately recognises when an iPhone or Android smartphone is connected to the R4.0 IntelliLink via USB.
As soon as the connection is made, the smartphone interface is adapted to the seven-inch touchscreen and displayed clearly, while simultaneously charging the device.
Each interface automatically populates the display in a smart and simple way with the applications and features that drivers rely on the most. Apple CarPlay allows drivers to make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri.
Alternatively, Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem.
Full lists of supported apps are available at apple.com/ios/carplay and android.com/autorespectively.
A key advantage of using the navigation apps is that the driver always has the latest map data at their disposal as updates are made available by the respective provider and downloaded onto the phone.
Furthermore, smartphone-based systems display traffic conditions in real time along with possible points of interest – including the complete address, opening hours and distance.
Another advantage of the system is that when a text message from services such as WhatsApp or Skype is received it pops up on the IntelliLink screen (without the text) and is read aloud.
Vauxhall also offers an additional navigation option in the portable TomTom GO 40 system. The 4.3-inch colour touchscreen can be safely attached to the dashboard via the FlexDock® holding device.
The TomTom system comes with maps of 45 European countries, 3D display and selected points of interest. Furthermore, the traffic situation is displayed in real time if a smartphone is connected.
Vauxhall OnStar
OnStar is available as standard on SE, Limited and VXR Corsa models. The integrated 4G/LTE architecture turns the Corsa into a powerful mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot thanks to a special external antenna that maximises connectivity and delivers a stable internet connection for up to seven devices.
The extensive services are the heart and soul of the personal connectivity and service assistant.
They range from around the clock Automatic Crash Response to Stolen Vehicle and Roadside Assistance, right up to Vehicle Diagnostics. All of these services are available at the push of a button through the system’s integrated SIM card, meaning a smartphone is not required.
Elsewhere, a smartphone is needed for the MyVauxhall smartphone app, enabling OnStar subscribers to request help when away from the vehicle, to lock or unlock the car doors or to access important vehicle data.
OnStar services and Wi-Fi are free for the first year. A second year of OnStar services, including roadside assistance, but excluding Wi-Fi is available for just £79.

Vauxhall launches updated Insignia with Whisper Diesel and new technology.

  • New 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ now available in Vauxhall flagship model
  • Award-winning OnStar offered as standard on selected models
  • Second gen Navi 900 IntelliLink uses Apple CarPlay for iPhone connectivity
Vauxhall’s Insignia is the latest model in the range to get the new 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ engine.
The new version of this mid-size turbo engine replaces the current 2.0-litre units and was developed to deliver exemplary responsiveness and low consumption with exceptional running smoothness.

Priced from £19,534 to £26,114 on-the-road, the 1.6 CDTi (136PS) ecoFLEX version achieves a top speed of 130mph and 0-60mph in 10.9 seconds. And crucially for fleet managers and company car drivers this model achieves 99g/km CO2 emissions when specified with 17-inch alloy wheels and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres (Design, SE, Tech Line and SRi models only). Fuel consumption is as frugal as 74.3mpg combined.
Also new to the Insignia range is OnStar, a one-of-a-kind system, giving you a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to seven devices, emergency response notification if the airbag deploys and stolen vehicle recovery technology. Connecting drivers directly with a call centre advisor, it provides owners with a personal assistant 24/7. For example, with Destination Download, you can call your OnStar advisor in-car and they’ll pinpoint your desired destination and send the address to your vehicle’s navigation system.
OnStar is available as standard on Elite, Limited Edition and VXR trims and as a £395 option on other models. For more information on OnStar please see: http://bit.ly/1KzOTW4
And if that wasn’t enough, the second generation Navi 900 IntelliLink that utilises Apple CarPlay brings the very best iPhone connectivity in to your car. This guarantees fast access to many entertainment apps for music and news. Display and operation are via the eight-inch colour touchscreen.
IntelliLink also enables audio streaming, having incoming text messages read aloud and voice control as well as watching films and videos – the former, of course, only when the car is stationary. The navigation system also features maps of more than 30 European countries; it can be displayed two or three-dimensionally according to personal preference and be controlled by voice command.

MARKET & MODEL
  • New Corsa VXR in showrooms in May
  • Priced from £17,995 on-the-road
  • Less expensive than key competitors
Vauxhall took the wraps off the new Corsa VXR, its ultra-powerful small hot-hatch, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show last month.
Benefiting from the significant revisions in technology, interior/exterior design and chassis showcased in the recently launched New Corsa, the VXR is set to raise the bar for small, fast hatchbacks when it appears in UK showrooms in May.

First launched in 2007, the Corsa VXR is now in its second generation.  The original car spawned four special editions: VXRacing, VXR Artic, VXR Nürburgring and VXR Clubsport. UK sales exceed 9,000 vehicles.
Priced from £17,995 on-the-road, the Corsa VXR’s list price has been rolled back by over £1,000 versus the outgoing model.  It’s also less expensive than key competitors including the Volkswagen Polo GTi, the Renault Sport Clio and the Ford Fiesta ST2.
Customers can now buy a VXR Performance Pack for £2,400 which specs the Corsa VXR up to a Nürburgring/Clubsport equivalent, but for £2,000 less than the previous model. The pack features a motorsport-derived Drexler Limited Slip Differential (LSD), Brembo four-piston brakes and re-tuned Koni FSD system above the standard set up.
Making it even more affordable, the Corsa VXR will be available on either zero per cent Flexible Finance or Flexible PCP with a £500 Vauxhall deposit contribution.
POWERTRAIN
  • 205PS and up to 280Nm from powerful 1.6-litre turbocharged engine
  • 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds; top speed 143mph
  • Precise and fast gear change thanks to short throw shifter
Headline performance figures for the Corsa VXR are 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 143mph – quicker than the outgoing car, but more importantly the VXR produces its 245Nm of torque from lower revs (between 1,900rpm – 5,800rpm, compared with 2,250rpm – 5,500rpm for the outgoing Nürburgring and ClubSport models). This makes the VXR a potent performer between 50-75mph, which it can dispatch in just 6.4 seconds in fifth gear.
An overboost facility provides an additional 35Nm of torque, ideal for swift and safe overtaking. Maximum power from its 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is 205PS, while the Corsa VXR achieves 37.7mpg on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions of 174g/km.
Development
Vauxhall’s powertrain engineers had to re-develop numerous components in the VXR’s engine to achieve its impressive performance values.
“We initially thought that the Nürburgring Edition of the Corsa VXR represented the end of the line from a developmental point of view,” said Volker Strycek, Vauxhall/Opel’s Director Performance Cars and Motorsport.
“But the new Corsa VXR actually makes its predecessors look almost ordinary. Improved power delivery across the entire rev band, more power especially at low revs and moderate consumption for a car with this performance including compliance with Euro-6 emissions standard make the Corsa VXR a benchmark in its class.”
Engineers constructed a completely new intake line leading to the turbocharger. A new intercooler is also used. New fuel injectors, controlled by the new engine management system, ensure an even finer and more precise delivery of fuel. This results in a noticeable improvement in responsiveness, especially at low engine speeds, and optimised power output at higher engine speeds.
The exhaust system is almost completely new. Working with exhaust specialists Remus, Vauxhall engineers developed a new exhaust manifold with an integrated turbocharger.
They also sound engineered to Lex Ferrari, a rule on pass-by-noise. An amendment in the European regulation allows performance cars over 190PS output and 102PS/ton to produce one extra decibel. The Corsa VXR twin-pipe exhaust is exactly in line with legal pass-by-noise regulations.
Transmission
As before, power is delivered to the front wheels via a second-generation six-speed transmission with a short, fluid gear change. The gearbox features a new design shift lever, shift cable and bearing cap with adjusted end stops. This helps reduce shift travel by 13 per cent versus this outgoing model.
CHASSIS
  • New chassis including Koni FSD technology
  • Two stage ESP offered for this first time
  • Optional Performance Pack also available
Vauxhall has worked closely with damper-supplier, Koni, to develop a new technology, known as Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) for the new Corsa VXR.
FSD allows damping forces to adapt to the car’s movements, ensuring that body control is maintained when the car is driven fast, but ride quality is optimised at lower speeds. The systems is an entirely mechanical solution and does not require any electronic components such as sensors, cables or engine control units. In addition, the car’s ride height has been lowered by 10mm all round.
There’s also a new rear axle with new geometry for a modified roll rate. In combination with a new torsion profile rod, this results in improved responsiveness compared to the outgoing model. The Corsa VXR’s spring rates, anti-roll bars, rear-axle bearing bushes are also new or revised.
For the first time, Vauxhall is offering a two-stage switchable electronic stability programme (ESP) and traction control (TC) with the Corsa VXR. In Competition Mode the traction control is inactive, while the ESP is relaxed to allow less intervention. For track use, the ESP can be fully disabled.
“A high degree of driving involvement was our priority right from the start of development,” said Volker Strycek, Vauxhall/Opel’s Director Performance Cars & Motorsport.
Revisions have been made to the new Corsa VXR’s steering, making it more direct and precise, with improved feedback through the wheel. Michelin 215/45 R17 tyres are standard, as are 308mm front brake discs.
Performance Package
For Corsa VXR customers keen to enhance their car’s dynamics still further, Vauxhall is offering an optional Performance Package, which includes certain features previously seen in the outgoing Nürburgring and ClubSport models. Priced keenly at £2,400, highlights include a Drexler limited-slip differential, larger 330mm-diameter Brembo front brake discs, 18-inch alloy wheels with super sticky Michelin Pilot Supersport tyres and more focused FSD damper settings.
“The Performance Pack is the Corsa VXR’s entry ticket for the race track,” added Strycek.
DESIGN & EQUIPMENT
  • New Corsa VXR interior and exterior styling
  • Six exterior colours and bi-xenon headlamps
  • Heated front windscreen and IntelliLink as standard
Standard bi-xenon lighting and a choice of six exterior colours help the new Corsa VXR stand out in its class. An aggressive new front-end design features large air intakes and an aluminium-framed opening below the headlights. A small scoop is located below the bonnet and side-sill extensions enhance the Corsa VXR’s performance credentials still further. At the rear, a rear spoiler provides meaningful downforce over the back axle, and twin Remus exhaust pipes further distinguish it from regular Corsas.
Six exterior colours – including Flash Blue, which is unique to the Corsa VXR – are available for the Corsa VXR. The car’s cabin has standard Recaro seats, a leather, flat-bottomed steering wheel, sports pedals, as well as a VXR gear-lever and instruments. A heated front windscreen and Intellilink connectivity for Apple iOS and Android smartphones are also standard.
Equipment
In addition to the Performance Pack, other new options for Corsa VXR are the VXR Carbon Pack which will include carbon fibre effect mirrors covers and front grille logo bar priced at £150.
A Panoramic glass sunroof is also now available which was only previously available on the Corsa VXR Arctic Edition.
Also available is the VXR Technical Pack which includes forward collision alert, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, following distance indicator, electro-chromatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror, rear-view camera and front and rear parking sensors.

VXR RANGE
  • New Corsa VXR is the latest addition to the VXR Range
  • Joins Astra VXR, Insignia VXR and VXR8 GTS
  • UK is leading market for Vauxhall/Opel performance cars
Vauxhall’s Corsa VXR is the latest addition to the VXR brand which currently consists of three other cars: Astra VXR, the Insignia VXR and the VXR8 GTS.
Having celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, the VXR range has been embraced by UK car enthusiasts, and has built up a loyal following to the brand with sales exceeding 20,000 vehicles. As a result, Britain has always been the leading market in Europe for Vauxhall/Opel performance cars, known as OPCs in other countries.
The first cars to bear the VXR nameplate were the VXR220 and the Monaro VXR, both of which were launched at the British Motor Show in Summer 2004. Number One VXR220 still resides in Vauxhall’s Heritage Centre, while the Monaro VXR – ‘…a true rear-wheel drive car for enthusiasts’ – was 40 per cent cheaper than a BMW 6-series at launch, yet developed 330PS from it 5.7-litre V8 engine.
But sports cars and rear-drive coupes haven’t been the only models subjected to VXR makeovers. The Zafira and Meriva MPVs were unlikely candidates, but proved that up to 240PS in a front-wheel drive people-carrier needn’t be an unruly experience. Chassis development at the Nordschleife helped, as did a raft of cabin upgrades, including Recaro front seats.
More recently, models like the Astra VXR and Corsa VXR ClubSport have adopted sophisticated differential technology to cater for ever-increasing power outputs. Manufactured by Drexler, the units help power to be applied more effectively through bends, giving the impression that driver is being pulled towards the apex under power.
And technological innovation is now the VXR bedrock. Torque Vectoring and magnetorheological damping (VXR8 GTS), adaptive all-wheel drive (Insignia VXR), FlexRide adaptive damping (Astra and Insignia VXRs), as well as generous levels of standard equipment in all VXRs have made the range a firm favourite with British enthusiasts.
