Mercedes adds a new cabrio and All-Terrain to the upcoming new E-Class range.

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet and E-Class All-Terrain are now available to order, along with new versions of the E-Class Coupé, Saloon and Estate. The cabriolet is priced from £44,675 for the E 220 d AMG Line Cabriolet. The All-Terrain is available in one special launch edition: All-Terrain Edition, from £58,880.

E-Class All-Terrain Edition

The E-Class All-Terrain Estate comes with standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, a nine-speed automatic gearbox and one efficient diesel engine, badged E 350 d. This 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 generates 258 hp and 620 Nm and emits

179 g/km, while delivering combined fuel economy of up to 41.5 mpg. It has a top speed of 155 mph, and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 6.2 seconds.

The All-Terrain Edition comes generously equipped as standard, with a Burmester surround sound system; Air Body Control air suspension; panoramic electric sunroof; Comand Online with a 12.3-inch infotainment display and 12.3-inch cockpit display – creating a widescreen effect; memory package, including electrically operated front seats; LED Intelligent Light System; Keyless-Go Comfort package; privacy glass; split folding rear seats; 20-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels; and an electrically folding tow bar with a 13-pin adapter. It has a towing capacity of up to 2,100 kg.

Dynamic Select – which allows the driver to tailor steering, suspension and accelerator settings - is also standard and features a specific All-Terrain mode, raising the vehicle by 20 mm.

The E-Class All-Terrain is 39 millimetres higher than the E 350d AMG Line Estate. The highest suspension setting gives ground clearance of up to 156 mm. The 4MATIC permanent four-wheel-drive distributes power between the front and rear axles with a split of 31:69.

E-Class Cabriolet

The E-Class Cabriolet is a full four-seater, with a multi-layer acoustic fabric roof that can be operated at speeds up to 31 mph and opened or closed in just 20 seconds. The roof can be specified in one of three no-cost option colours: black; dark blue and dark brown.

There are four engines available from launch: E 220 d; E 350 d 4MATIC;  E 300; and E 400 4MATIC.

The E 220 d features a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 194 hp, and 400 Nm of torque. It emits 126 g/km of CO2 and delivers up to 57.7 mpg on the combined cycle, while 0 to 62 mph takes 7.7 seconds. The E 350 d 4MATIC’s 3.0-litre V6 unit has an output of 258 hp and 620 Nm. Combined fuel economy is 41.5 mpg, and CO2 emissions 179 g/km, and 0 to 62 mph takes 6.1 seconds.

The E 300 uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 245 hp and 370 Nm and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds. It has a CO2 output of 167 g/km and can deliver up to 39.2 combined mpg. The range-topping E 400 4MATIC has a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 engine generating 333 hp and 480 Nm. It emits 194 g/km of CO2 and delivers 32.8 mpg combined. It can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Standard specification for the E-Class Cabriolet is based on that of the E-Class Coupé, with the addition of the Airscarf neck-level heating system and Aircap, which helps to redirect the air flow over the cabin for a more relaxing driving experience. Other standard equipment includes: Agility Control suspension; Magic Vision Control wiper system; LED high performance headlights; reversing camera; heated front seats; and ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours. Air Body Control air suspension and Comand Online - including the 12.3-inch infotainment screen - are optionally available for £1,495, or standard on the E 400 4MATIC. A second 12.3-inch screen is £495.

A Premium package is optionally available for £1,795 and adds Memory package (including electrically operated front seats) and Keyless-Go Comfort package (keyless entry and start, plus hands-free boot access). The £2,895 Premium Plus package adds to the Premium package with a Burmester Surround Sound system and Multibeam LED Intelligent Light System. Exclusive to the E-Class Cabriolet is the new Rubellite Red metallic paint, which costs £645.

The optional Driving Assistance Plus Package (£1,695) includes Drive Pilot, which combines Distance Pilot Distronic; Speed Limit Pilot; Active Lane-Change Assistant; Active Brake Assist cross-traffic function; Evasive Steering Assist; and Pre-Safe Impulse Side.

Additional changes to the E-Class range

Two new all-wheel drive models have been added to the E-Class Coupé line-up: the E 220 d 4MATIC and E 350 d 4MATIC. The £41,820 E 220 d 4MATIC generates 194 hp and 400 Nm, emits 137 g/km, delivers 53.3 mpg and can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds. The £51,415 E 350 d 4MATIC packs 258 hp and 620 Nm, emits 174 g/km and delivers up to 42.8 mpg. It can accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in six seconds.

The E 350 d 4MATIC model has also been added to the E-Class Saloon and Estate range. In the Saloon it emits 167 g/km and delivers up to 44.8 combined mpg. The E 350 d 4MATIC Estate emits 174 g/km and can achieve 42.8 mpg.

The All-New BMW 6-Series Gran Turismo, better looks and more kit and technology.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo sets a new level of comfort and elegance wrapped in a sporting coupé design but now with superior driving dynamics and efficiency. This new model, which takes over from the 5 Series Gran Turismo, gets a new designation to reflect the major step forward over its predecessor.

Set to make its World Premiere at the IAA show in Frankfurt the 6 Series Gran Turismo will make its market launch on 11 November 2017. Initially it will be offered with a choice of three engines while the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system will be available in two of the three variants in the model line-up.

The large GT, a vehicle concept blending the luxury of a comfortable saloon with coupé looks, was first launched in 2009. Known as BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, the model was a game changer delivering comfort and elegance, but practicality too. The new 6 Series Gran Turismo takes these characteristics so enjoyed by 5 Series GT customers to another level and enhances the driving dynamics further.

Distinctive looks: eye-catching and powerful

From the BMW kidney grille to the sculpted LED units at the rear, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo has an eye-catching profile, but when viewed from the front the vehicle has a muscular presence. 

Standard BMW Icon Adaptive LED headlights for dipped and main beam, joined by the daytime driving lights display the focused look familiar from other BMW models. The elongated BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo cuts an impressive silhouette: the A-pillars are much more heavily raked than its predecessor while the flowing roofline and sweeping side window design gives that true coupé look. 

The BMW 6 Gran Turismo is no longer broken up by an extra guide strip through the large window in the rear door and, at the rear, horizontal lines, sharp edges and tapering surfaces magnify the car’s width to emphasise its sporting nature.

Sleeker, sportier, with improved practicality

The new 6 Series Gran Turismo clearly takes its cues from the 5 Series GT, but its design offers a more athletic, sportier stance. Vehicle height has been reduced by 21mm, while the rear end has been lowered by 64mm. The vehicle length has been increased by 87mm while the width remains the same. All these changes, while retaining the coupé/saloon characteristics of the predecessor, have contributed to a more low-slung silhouette without compromising on interior space or practicality. 

Indeed, the 6 Series Gran Turismo better serves its passengers with more headroom as well as offering ample legroom. The rear has three full-size seats and customers can opt for electrically-adjustable chairs where the backrest angle can be altered at the push of a button.

With its increased length the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo also offers more boot space, both with the rear seats in place or folded down. Rear-seat backrests are 40:20:40 split-folding by means of a remote release system in the boot and, behind them, the boot area can accommodate a total of 610 litres (up 110 litres on the 5 Series GT) and 1,800 litres when the backrests are folded down (up 100 litres). 

The vehicle also features a one-piece electrically operated tailgate, while the boot sill has been lowered by more than five centimetres and is now flush with the floor for improved loading capability. The two-piece luggage compartment cover has a rigid structure and can be stowed away in a compartment underneath the boot floor.

Power and efficiency

The engine line-up features TwinPower Turbo technology and all variants offer the eight-speed Steptronic transmission with paddles as standard. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit in the new BMW 630i Gran Turismo delivers 258hp and peak torque of 400Nm, taking the car from zero to 62mph in 6.3 seconds with a combined fuel consumption of 43.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 148g/km. 

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo generates 340hp and maximum torque of 450Nm and it will accelerate from zero to 62mph in 5.3 seconds. The combined fuel consumption is 35.3mpg respectively, which equates to CO2 emissions of 183g/km. The BMW 630d Gran Turismo and the new BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo both use a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine producing 265hp and peak torque of 620Nm. 

The 630d version accelerates from zero to 62mph in 6.1 seconds while the xDrive version is slightly faster, reaching 62mph in 6.0 seconds. The combined fuel consumption and emissions figures are 57.6mpg and 129g/km for the BMW 630d Gran Turismo and 49.5mpg and 150g/km for the BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo.

Improved aerodynamics, increased efficiency, sportier performance

The increased length and reduced height of the vehicle have stretched the proportions of the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo to give a sportier look. Among the other features that combine to give the new model its coupé -like profile are its long bonnet, the set-back position of the cabin, doors with frameless windows and an elongated window outline stretching deep into the rear end. 

This carefully sculpted design, along with a rear spoiler that automatically extends when the car exceeds 75mph and retracts below 50mph, have helped to bring the Cd drag coefficient from 0.29 on the outgoing model to 0.25 on the new 6 Series Gran Turismo. In order to optimise efficiency even further, BMW has combined lightweight engineering and increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel grades for both body and chassis components to achieve an average weight reduction of 115kg compared with the 5 Series GT. 

This, with the increase in power and superior efficiency of the new engines, has contributed to a reduction of over 15 per cent in fuel consumption and emissions (BMW 630d Gran Turismo).

Superior comfort and cornering capability 

The lighter chassis and improved suspension technology on the BMW 6 Series GT have combined to improve handling and comfort. Self-levelling air suspension comes as standard at the rear axle, but for extra comfort customers can opt for Adaptive suspension, which features front and rear air suspension plus Dynamic Damper Control. Customers can also take up the Executive Drive option, offered in combination with the Integral Active Steering system that incorporates active roll stabilisation to deliver supreme cornering capability. 

The two-axle air suspension allows the vehicle’s ride-height to be adjusted manually, meaning that, at the touch of a button, ground clearance can be increased by 20 millimetres when negotiating dirt tracks or steep ramps. 

The vehicle can also be lowered by 10 millimetres by pushing a button but it will so do automatically when SPORT mode is engaged via the Drive Performance Control switch or if the car exceeds 75mph. All optional suspension systems are now available with BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Interior comfort, driving pleasure and exceptional functionality

Inside, the BMW 6 Gran Turismo has been designed to give driving pleasure as well as comfort for passengers. A raised seating position optimises the driver’s all-round view and with electric front seats and driver’s memory function the perfect seating position can always be saved with ease.

Up front is a freestanding touchscreen for navigation, communication and infotainment functions. The high-resolution display has a 10.25-inch diagonal screen, while its tile-style menu layout with animated graphics in live mode allow for intuitive operation. 

The centre console again features the iDrive Touch Controller dial for BMW navigation and infotainment systems while standard-fit enhanced voice control that now responds to freely formulated instructions, enables total handsfree capability. The new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo also features optional gesture control, which allows certain functions to be operated with simple movements of the hand or fingers. 

These are registered by a 3D sensor in the centre console and translated into the relevant commands. Customers can also opt for the new-generation BMW Head-Up Display. This system, where the projection area has been increased by 70 per cent, reflects driving-related information on to the windscreen that will be directly in the driver’s field of vision.

Two trim levels with option packages for individual style

Standard equipment on the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo includes automatic climate control with an option to scale up to a four-zone system. Standard metallic paint is available in ten finishes whilst two non-metallic paint finishes are also available and, while 18-inch light-alloy wheels are standard, other wheels in sizes up to 20 inches can be ordered. 

The Original BMW Accessories range also includes 21-inch alloys. From launch, customers can choose from two trims: SE and M Sport. M Sport offers specific 19-inch light alloy wheels, leather upholstery with exclusive stitching and piping in contrasting colours, plus illuminated door sill strips. 

A Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System can be ordered as option - this includes a fully active 10-channel 1,400-watt amplifier with dynamic sound equalising and 16 partially illuminated speakers - whilst a panoramic glass roof is standard on M Sport models and optionally available on the SE models. Reversing assist camera is standard across both trim levels.

The latest in driver assistance systems

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo makes use of a standard stereo camera as well as optional radar and ultrasonic sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings to improve safety and security. The Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation comes as standard, while the list of options includes the new improved version of Active Cruise Control, which is operational at speeds between zero and130mph. 

Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning systems that operate between 44-130mph are also options as are Side Collision Warning and Evasion Aid, which both come to the driver’s aid with corrective steering inputs. The options list also features a Surround View camera system that can display a 3D image of the vehicle and its immediate surroundings from multiple perspectives in the Control Display. 

The Crossing Traffic warning system, which monitors the surrounding area using radar sensors, is particularly useful when exiting from concealed junctions or driveways or when backing out of a parking space perpendicular to the road. The Crossroads and Wrong-Way warning systems avoid potentially hazardous situations at junctions where traffic on the other road has right of way and when joining motorways or entering a roundabout. 

The BMW Night Vision system is another option that gives a real-time video image in the Control Display that highlights any pedestrians, larger animals or other objects radiating heat. The vehicle can also be ordered with the Remote Control Parking feature to help drivers get into tight spaces.

Drive Performance Control: ECO PRO, COMFORT, SPORT as well as COMFORT+ and ADAPTIVE options

The Drive Performance Control switch adjusts the car’s settings according to the driving conditions. If ECO PRO mode is selected the coasting function decouples the powertrain whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator between 31-99mph. Intelligent networking also improves the efficiency-boosting effect of the Auto Start Stop function by preventing the engine being switched off at moments where it would be counterproductive for efficiency – for example when pausing briefly at T-junctions or roundabouts. As well as ECO PRO mode, the Drive Performance Control switch can activate the COMFORT and SPORT settings for sportier or more relaxed driving. Customers who choose the Adaptive and Executive Drive options add COMFORT+ and ADAPTIVE modes to the Drive Performance Control selection. These additional settings allow drivers to select a particularly comfort-based set-up in COMFORT+ or one that responds automatically to their driving style in the ADAPTIVE setting. In ADAPTIVE mode, navigation data from the standard Professional Navigation system is used to proactively adjust the car’s responses when approaching intersections or bends. This system adapts to the route so, for example, it can perform an early downshift when approaching an intersection in order to take full advantage of the engine braking effect.

BMW Connected: personal mobility assistant, new services

BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo owners can also enjoy the benefits of the BMW Connected system that helps drivers get to their destination even when they are not in their car. Calendar entries from a smartphone can be used for route planning where the ideal departure time can be calculated on the basis of real-time traffic data. The Remote 3D View function adds extra security by allowing drivers to view live images of their car and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

Once inside, drivers are able to manage calendar, e-mail and contact data via the Microsoft Exchange function. BMW is the first car maker to offer a secure server connection for exchanging and editing emails, calendar entries and contact details thanks to the car’s built-in Microsoft Exchange function. This means that addresses from appointment entries can be imported straight into the navigation system and telephone numbers and email addresses from an incoming email or appointment can be dialled with an easy one click transfer so that it can easily be navigated on the move. Any incoming email can be read aloud and a response dictated back using the Intelligent Voice Assistant.

Real Time Traffic Information shows jams and slow-moving traffic and the On-Street Parking Information function helps drivers to find roadside parking spaces based on historical and current data. The BMW Professional Navigation system also uses car-to-car communication so drivers can get as much information about the road network ahead including warnings of traffic hazards caused by accidents, broken-down vehicles, fog, heavy rain or black ice.

The 6 Series Gran Turismo is also available with the BMW Display Key where drivers can keep in contact with their vehicle around the clock. As well as information about fuel level and service intervals, the colour display tells the driver if the doors, windows and panoramic sunroof are closed.

Rolls ROyce to debut its full range of Black Badge models at Goodwood with the new addition, the Dawn.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, Rolls-Royce presented a truly transformative moment on the luxury landscape – the introduction of a permanent Bespoke family of motor cars called Black Badge, designed in response to the differing lifestyle requirements of a younger, more dynamic patron of luxury.

Since its introduction, Black Badge has done much to attract a new generation of Rolls-Royce customers to the marque. As a result of overwhelmingly positive customer demand for Ghost Black Badge and Wraith Black Badge, the time is now right to add a new chapter to the Black Badge story.

The 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed will celebrate machines so beyond measurable limitations, they have changed the landscape in which they operate – an entirely fitting stage on which the third chapter in this truly transformative story can unfurl – the global debut of Dawn Black Badge, the most uncompromising expression of open-top luxury in the world.

The Black Badge story

Since it was launched in 2016, Black Badge has become the most commanding presence on the super-luxury landscape. Its authentic Bespoke engineering and design approach has answered the demands of those customers who have said “Build us a Rolls-Royce like no other”.

Black Badge is Rolls-Royce’s response to a small and select group of clients who have asked the marque for motor cars with specific, focused characteristics that reflect their different take on life, success and the luxury they consume. These people choose to define themselves differently from their wider social group; a subset within a subset.

For over a century such individuals, possessed of a dark and restless spirit, have been drawn to Rolls-Royce’s unique allure. Luminaries including Sir Malcolm Campbell, Howard Hughes and Muhammed Ali have all shared the marque’s founding philosophy; an uncompromising refusal to accept the status quo and a constant yearn to innovate, create and advance.

Their restless spirit was also shared by the marque’s co-founder; himself one of the great disrupters of his day. The Honourable C.S. Rolls was a man in a hurry. Not satisfied with fundamentally altering the road-car landscape, he sought more and pursued his appetite for advancement and adventure in the air; a passion that would ultimately lead to his untimely demise aged just 33.

It is this indomitable spirit that, since the launch of Black Badge, has captivated so many of today’s young owners, who are drawn to Rolls-Royce in the knowledge that no other luxury house is possessed of the vision and flexibility to meet their demands both in design and engineering terms. Indeed, Black Badge serves to amplify the inherent characteristics that have driven so many new, younger patrons of luxury to the marque.

In conceiving Black Badge versions of Wraith, Ghost and now Dawn, the marque’s Bespoke designers and engineers drew upon their instinctive understanding of the unique lives of these extraordinary men and women to create both design and engineering treatments that perfectly amplify the inherent values of these great Rolls-Royces.

Dawn Black Badge

Created to satisfy overwhelming demand from a new breed of Rolls-Royce patrons, Dawn Black Badge stands as the most luxurious, social and sensual space from which to take in the night air. This most glamorous, uncompromising expression of open-top luxury is given a new and darker sensual dimension through its suite of Black Badge engineering and design treatments.

The Dawn Black Badge at the Festival of Speed is presented in a deeply intense shade of black. Multiple layers of paint and lacquer have been fastidiously applied and hand-polished in a process that amounts to the most exhaustive painting and polishing process ever used for a solid paint colour. 

The result clothes Dawn’s sensuous lines in the deepest, darkest and most intense black to ever grace a production car surface. The roof, which opens in a ‘Silent Ballet’ to allow in the sounds of the night, is also only available in black canvas, whilst the rear deck is finished in black leather.

In creating Black Badge, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke designers have sought to create true signifiers of this more assertive alter-ego for the marque. Dawn gets this same treatment.

The Spirit of Ecstasy – itself a mascot that has taken many different forms throughout the marque’s history – transforms into a high-gloss vamp, finished in a perfectly executed black chrome. 

This transformation to a darker aesthetic extends to certain chrome surfaces including the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, exhaust pipes and air inlet finisher. The effect is an authentic transformation that speaks of a bolder, more confident sensibility. Finally, the ‘Double R’ signifiers on the Rolls-Royce badges are inverted in colour, confirming the creation of a true alter-ego of the marque.

This bold, edgy design ethos extends beautifully into the interior – an exquisitely appointed staging point for patrons who seek to discover the night’s elements with the roof down.

Evoking Sir Henry Royce’s founding philosophy to ‘design what does not exist’ – a collaboration between the marque’s design and engineering departments has seen the creation of a new luxury material. Inspired by Rolls-Royce’s aviation heritage and echoing advanced production techniques for stealth aircraft, a beautiful and highly innovative new treatment for the car’s surfaces has been conceived.

Its construction displays every hallmark of Rolls-Royce’s fastidious attention to detail. Threads of aircraft grade aluminium, a delicate 0.014m in diameter, are woven together and then bonded in carbon fibre. Surfaces are then finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours and hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark mirror finish. The result is a highly contemporary finish, perfectly attuned to the darker more menacing aesthetic today’s patrons of luxury demand.

This exquisite expression of noir informs every conceivable detail. For example, innovative production techniques such as Physical Vapour Deposition, a highly technical surfacing method, perfectly darkens the air-vents throughout the interior in a manner that will never discolour or tarnish.

Reflecting the marque’s Bespoke philosophy, Dawn Black Badge also plays host to a new interior palette break-up. Higher levels of exquisite Black leather are accented boldly with Mandarin highlights, including a strip of orange highlight which encircles the cabin at hip-height, evocative of the sunset before the passengers are immersed in darkness.

A final touch, again, in a nod to one of Rolls-Royce’s great pioneer patrons, Sir Malcolm Campbell, finishes the rear interior space. His famous ‘Infinity’ rating logo beautifully embroidered into the car’s rear waterfall, gives a subtle nod to a man very much possessed of the restless spirit that so defines the Black Badge attitude.

Truly Bespoke Engineering

Like its stablemates Ghost and Wraith, the distilled essence of Dawn is amplified through the engineering that underpins the Black Badge philosophy. In the case of Dawn, the engineering substance that leads to more spirited driving is accentuated by the creation of an entirely new exhaust system, that when deployed by the press of the ‘low’ button, celebrates Rolls-Royce’s hallmark V12 engine with a menacing bass baritone, announcing its arrival with authority rather than hysteria.

The exhaust tone adds an aural dimension to a suite of engineering enhancements. Indeed, Black Badge stands as a truly Bespoke collaboration between design and engineering, answering the demands of a new breed of patron of luxury who seeks a more spirited, involving driving experience which retains the peerless quality of ride that has driven Dawn’s success. 

To achieve this, the engineers have exploited the flexibility of Dawn’s magnificent 6.6 litre twin-turbo V12 to generate an extra 30bhp over the car’s already ample 563bhp, bringing the total to 593bhp. That hallmark sense of one infinite gear is also given bolder expression with the addition of a further 20NM of torque available from 1,500rpm, bringing the total to 840NM.

Fundamental changes to the transmission and throttle strategy give Dawn an enhanced feeling of urgency without diminishing its position as the world’s most luxurious open-top tourer. Indeed, the drive-train, ZF 8-speed gear box and steering-rack are so intuitive that they work together to create a more spirited drive depending on throttle and steering input. 

The result is a perfectly stately Rolls-Royce touring experience at low speeds and a highly engaging drive when the driver seeks to ‘push on’. Fundamental changes to suspension settings and components also ensure an appropriate balance between Rolls-Royce comfort and driver focus, felt in flatter cornering at high speeds.

The increased urgency of Dawn Black Badge has led to the development of new brakes with an increase in diameter of one inch. During deceleration, a fundamental remapping of the transmission strategy leads to downshifts a few rpm sooner under braking, offering engine braking when driving in a more spirited manner.

The steering-rack has also been quickened and engineered for more feedback. Speed-dependent adjustments also embolden Black Badge drivers as they enjoy an added sense of security and feel derived from increased steering weight at high speeds.

Dawn Black Badge is now available to commission.

Today, BMW announces the latest BMW 2 Series, a model that has earned not only the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick+” but also winning the inaugural JD Powers Tech Experience Index Study (TXI) in the “Best Small Premium Segment”. 

Renowned for embracing BMW’s traditional driving character, the BMW 2 Series features the latest generation of BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder inline engines, that paired with specifically tuned chassis and suspension promotes a driving experience that fuels sporting ambition. 

The new BMW 2 Series will be available in the US as Coupe and Convertible 230i and M240i models, which can be specified with xDrive, BMW’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System. Pricing for the new BMW 2 Series will be announced closer to market launch in July, 2017.

The BMW 2 Series Coupe.

In 2014, the BMW 2 Series Coupe was launched in the US as 228i and M235i model variants. This successor to the successful 1 Series Coupe will continue the decades-long tradition of premium sub-compact coupes with impeccable driving dynamics. The BMW coupe, a two-door body with classical three-box design, four seats and rear-wheel drive is 174.7 inch-long (BMW M240i: 175.9 inch), with a trunk capacity of 13.8 cubic feet.

The BMW 2 Series Convertible.

Combining the coupe’s driving dynamics with the option of open-air pleasure, the BMW 2 Series Convertible will be available as a 230i and M240i models, also available with BMW’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System. Short overhangs, a long trunk a set-back passenger compartment, a long wheelbase and a wide track produce the classical proportions of a BMW convertible. The electrically operated fabric soft-top slips down into the body to create a boat-deck look and offers excellent acoustic comfort when closed thanks to additional insulation. The roof can be opened while driving – at speeds of up to 30 mph.

Exterior and lighting design.

A low-slung silhouette, dynamically stretched lines with compact proportions and powerfully contoured surfaces accentuate the sporting credentials and elegance of both the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible. The new BMW 2 Series features a new and more striking front end for both models featuring new LED headlamps.

LED light graphic creates a sharper gaze.

Twin headlights help ensure the front end embraces BMW legacy. The BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible are now equipped with new Bi-LED headlights as standard. The headlights are composed of a familiar silhouette: flat-bottomed headlight tubes encircled by daytime running light rings and a dynamic cropped look produced by the characteristic “eyebrow” design. Adaptive LED headlights can also be specified, featuring their eye-catching light graphic strengthening the dynamic and technical impression created by the front end. The familiar twin-circular-headlight look has a hexagonal interpretation, creating a more precise appearance. On 230i models, LED front fog lamps are standard.

The kidney grille emphasizes the broader stance of the front facia of the new BMW 2 Series. The links between the headlights and the kidney grille combined with the light graphic, ensure the nose of the Coupe and Convertible projects a sportier impression. The outer air intakes in the three-section front end are now larger, while two horizontal bars emphasize the cars’ powerful stance on the road. The rear of the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible cuts a wide and muscular figure. Its stylistic impact is reinforced by the single-piece rear lights (LEDs as standard) with hallmark BMW L-shape, which extend well into the flanks.

New light-alloy wheels, new paint finishes.

Three new colors – a darker Mediterranean Blue Metallic and a lighter Seaside Blue Metallic, plus the bold Sunset Orange – have been added to the pallet of exterior paint shades available for the Coupe and Convertible. This brings the number of available exterior paint finishes to 11.

The range of light-alloy wheels has also been expanded. The 230i comes standard with a 17-inch Double-Spoke wheel (Style 725) with Bi-Color all-season run-flat tires. The M240i features an 18-inch M Double-Spoke (Style 719M) Bi-Color non-run-flat performance tires as standard. If equipped with the M Sport package, the 230i models will be equipped with18-inch M Light-Alloy Double-Spoke (Style 461M) M Ferric Grey Metallic wheels or 18-inch Double-Spoke (Style 461M) wheels with all-season tires. Both the Track Handling Package and the M Sport Package provide customers the ability to order 18-inch Alloy Ferric Grey (Style 461M) wheels with non-run-flat Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The new BMW 2 Series, Coupe and Convertible come standard with Sport Line and the 17-inch Double-Spoke wheel. The optional Luxury Line allow customers to specify their vehicle with a 17-inch 725 Sport design. A new wheel Style 719 M 18-inch M Double-Spoke wheels are available on M240i models (Bi-Color with all season run-flats; Jet Black with non-run-flats or Jet Black with all-season non-run-flats).

Interior and equipment.

A completely redesigned instrument panel highlight a driver-focused layout. New materials highlighting the exclusive character of the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible.

New-look instrument panel produces a great sense of spaciousness.

The instrument panel’s makeover completely changes the overall impression created by the new BMW 2 Series cabin. The elegant design is enhanced by a roomier, wider built. Sport Line, which is standard on all models, features contrast stitching for the seams. The center stack, which houses the control panels for the radio and climate control systems, have a high-gloss black finish that gives the main element nestled between the central display and transmission tunnel an even more exclusive and sophisticated feel. The cupholders located in the center storage compartment can be concealed by a sliding lid, while the window switches in the doors now have chrome edging. Attention to detail allow the glove compartment to seamlessly blend into the interior styling. The air conditioning system’s vents have also been redesigned to create additional room.

The new BMW 2 Series comes standard with Sport Line which can be specified with Black with red contrast stitching if desired. Customers can choose between SensaTec, available in Black and Oyster, and leather and all models can now be ordered with Dakota Leather seats in Cognac. Luxury Line is also available with the Luxury Package adding Fineline Stream Wood Trim with Pearl Chrome highlights or Fineline Pure Wood Trim with Pear Chrome highlight. Overall, customers can choose from five different leather offerings, Aluminum interior strips and Fineline wood accents with High-Gloss Black being standard.

Engines, powertrain, chassis.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible are available as 230i and M240i models. The 4-cylinder produces 248 hp while the M Performance model features a 6-cylinder engine that generates 335 hp. The Convertible is also available in extra-sporty BMW M Performance trim. These engines are from the latest BMW EfficientDynamics engine family and feature BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

The new BMW 2 Series comes standard with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The Steptronic Sport also allows drivers looking for a sportier drive to change gear manually using shift paddles next to the steering wheel, as well as laying on smooth automatic gear changes. Also available is a 6-speed manual gearbox on 230i and M240i model variants.

Intelligent all-wheel drive provides optimum power transfer.

The BMW 2 Series is available with xDrive, BMW’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System. This system is available in both Coupe and Convertible and offers specific benefits – such as optimum power transfer under acceleration and through corners, unbeatable driving safety and maximum traction in wintry conditions or on wet roads. BMW xDrive also reduces understeer and oversteer through corners, enhancing the overall dynamic experience throughout the year.

Advanced suspension technology, even weight distribution.

The BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible feature sophisticated suspension technology, including a double-joint spring strut front axle with anti-roll bars, plus a five-link rear axle. Large sections of the cars’ suspension are made of aluminum. A low center of gravity, wide track, and almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution all play their part in delivering outstanding dynamics and handling properties – and they are backed up by energy-efficient and precise electromechanical power steering.

BMW ConnectedDrive.

The new BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 2 Series Convertible come complete with various assistance systems, the latest-generation iDrive control technology, and an extensive range of connectivity features to help the driver focus on the task at hand and enjoy the drive to the maximum.

Touchscreen for simple operation.

The new BMW 2 Series features the latest BMW user interface available, iDrive 6.0. The standard 6.6-inch screen can be enhanced with Navigation and allow drivers to engage with the vehicles operating system not only via iDrive controller but also voice command and touch. The 8.8-inch high-resolution central display with optional Navigation System available adds Touchscreen technology to both 230i and M240i models. Users can swipe their fingers to move between the various different categories and subsections efficiently. Based on customer preference, the system will switch between the Touchscreen, natural Voice Control or the iDrive Touch Controller, depending on the method chosen. The new and improved Voice Control function now allows users to naturally phrase any request or command, which the system will execute.

Perfectly connected in every way.

Thanks to the standard built-in SIM card in the BMW 2 Series, ConnectedDrive provides optimum connectivity and access to BMW services without having to rely on the customer’s smartphone. Featuring ARTTI (Advanced Real Time Traffic Information) a smarter, more efficient way around traffic jams can be displayed. Hazard reports and rain are shown on the map in the vehicle’s display, while a warning and message appear on the navigation map when approaching the location of the danger.

On-Street Parking Information (OSPI) service uses the Navigation system Professional display to indicate the probability of finding an available roadside parking space. This cutting-edge technology helps to alleviate the problem of vehicles searching for a parking space, which accounts for a large part of traffic congestion in metropolitan areas. OSPI works similar to the Advanced Real Time Traffic Information system, using historical and current data to draw conclusions regarding the availability of parking spaces on route within the coverage area. The system then uses a model to predict the odds of finding an open parking spot. A color coding on the navigation map displays the systems suggestions.

BMW Connected seamlessly integrates the BMW 2 Series into the user’s life via touchpoints such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, and Android smartphone. The BMW Connected App is the bridge to seamlessly integrate what are arguably two of most important devices in a person’s life: their vehicle and their smartphone. Never worry about being late or entering in destinations in the vehicle. The BMW Connected App will notify users when to leave for an appointment and pull the address information directly into the vehicle’s navigation system.

BMW Connected detects and shares information between the user’s vehicle and phone, such as the addresses of appointments calendar. The user then receives a message on their smartphone notifying them in advance of the ideal departure time based on real-time traffic information. In addition, places the user drives to regularly and personal mobility patterns are also stored automatically. This means that manually entering destination addresses in the navigation system is set to largely become a thing of the past. If navigation details such as the destination address and desired arrival time have already been set outside the vehicle on the user’s smartphone, the link between phone and car will allow BMW Connected to transfer the information seamlessly and make it available to the BMW navigation system.

BMW Connected and the Remote Services allow BMW 2 Series drivers to stay in touch with their car at all times, no matter where they are. They can control the ventilation, lock and unlock the doors, and call up vehicle-related information quickly and easily using their smartphone. BMW Connected can also help locate the associated vehicle on the map if needed. Additionally, the vehicle’s horn can be activated and the headlights flashed remotely.

Wireless charging and complete smartphone integration.

Available on both the 230i and M240i models, the optional Wireless Charging allows for wireless charging via an inductive charging tray located in the center console in front of the cupholders. A wireless charging case is available from the Original BMW Accessories range for phones that are not yet compatible with this charging technology. Apple CarPlay compatibility is also available in the BMW 2 Series integrating the smartphone into the vehicle’s iDrive system allows the phone, together with apps that have been approved by Apple for CarPlay, to be operated via the screen in the car by means of the iDrive Controller or Touch screen. BMW is the first carmaker to integrate Apple CarPlay completely wirelessly.

Strain-relieving driver assistance systems.

When driving long distances or in heavy city traffic, assistance systems relieve the strain on the driver by assisting with routine tasks or taking intervening action if required. The list of assistance systems available for BMW 2 Series models includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. This system enables the vehicle to automatically move along with the flow of traffic on the highways, braking or accelerating depending on the traffic situation. If necessary, the vehicle can come to a full stop. The system alerts the driver and then applies the brakes if it detects an obstacle and the driver fails to react. 

The optional Driving Assistant Package comprises the Lane Departure Warning system and City Collision Mitigation, which applies the brakes automatically at speeds up to 37 mph in response to an imminent collision with a car, motorcycle or pedestrian, for instance. The Parking Assistant, meanwhile, maneuvers the car into parking spots that are either parallel or perpendicular to the road. Its ultrasonic sensors help to search for suitable spaces while travelling at up to 22 mph.

BMW M240i: BMW M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology.

The BMW M240i is powered by a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline engine complete with direct injection, M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology with twin-scroll turbocharging, fully variable valve lift (VALVETRONIC) and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. This unit generates output of 335 hp and maximum torque of 369 lb-ft, which can be summoned from as low as 1,520 rpm and remains on tap up to 4,500 rpm.

It all adds up to make the BMW M240i Coupe a thoroughbred athlete with exceptional performance capabilities: with the 6-speed manual transmission, the coupe sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The standard 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission heightens the dynamic driving experience, enabling the BMW M240i Coupe to reach the 60 mph mark from rest in just 4.4 seconds.

Performance is even more eye-catching in the BMW M240i xDrive Coupe thanks to its intelligent all-wheel drive. Equipped with the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard, it surges from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, while the xDrive model completes the sprint in 4.4 seconds.

Precisely matched components, inimitable character.

Both BMW M Performance models leave the factory shod with high-performance mixed-size tires as standard, with dimensions of 225/40 at the front and 245/35 at the rear. All-Season tires are offered as a no cost option. The unique character of the BMW M240i Coupe and BMW M240i Convertible goes beyond the engine’s power, the Adaptive M Suspension, the M Sport brakes, and the cars’ aerodynamic balance. Variable sport steering adds to the impression of exceptional agility at the wheel of the BMW M240i which comes with electromechanical power assistance. This allows lightning-fast evasive maneuvers but also produces a sensation of excellent directional and straight-line stability during highway travel.

BMW M2: the Ultimate Driving Machine.

The BMW M2 will also form part of the new line-up launched in July 2017. This compact-sized, powerful sports coupe from BMW M GmbH benefits from the same innovations as the 2 Series Coupe. Boasting a high-performance 6-cylinder inline engine, rear-wheel-drive agility, a lightweight M Sport suspension made from aluminum and extrovert styling, the new BMW M2 Coupe once again delivers outstanding torque available across a wide rev band with rapid responses and excellent efficiency, raising the pulse with its distinctive engine soundtrack.

Inspired by various models from BMW Motorsport history, the new BMW M2 Coupe wears its exceptional sporting prowess “on its sleeve”. A low-slung front apron with large air intakes, muscular flanks with trademark M side gills, 19-inch aluminium wheels in familiar M twin-spoke design, and the wide, low-to-the-road rear end with M-specific twin-tailpipe exhaust all add to the character of the M2. Sport seats, an M sports steering wheel and an M gearshift lever ensure the driver is in complete control of their BMW M2 at all times.

The 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline engine under the hood of the new BMW M2 deploys cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology to generate 365 hp at 6,500 rpm. The same applies to power delivery: peak torque of 343 lb-ft can be increased to a mighty 369 lb-ft in overboost mode. This propels the new BMW M2 Coupe with optional 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) and Launch Control from 0 to 60 mph 4.1 seconds, with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

The lightweight aluminum front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4, forged 19-inch aluminum wheels with mixed-size tires, M Servotronic steering with two settings and immensely powerful M compound brakes equip the new BMW M2 Coupe to move the game on once again in the compact high-performance sports car segment when it comes to driving dynamics. The electronically controlled Active M Differential, which further enhances both traction and handling stability, also deserves great credit here.
