Purpose

I will try my best to provide detailed info on various cars and what is like to live with them, I have already produced a few for Jaguar-car-forums, I will do my best to be unbiased, but it will be hard for some cars. I will re-produce press releases and copy from other motoring news.

£3.4million total sales at Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé Sale. Including in this is the Jaguar driven by Boycie in Only Fools and Horses.

  • £3.4million total sales at Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé Sale.
  • Jaguar E-Type that starred in Only Fools & Horses sells for £115,875
  • The auction took place at Blenheim Palace last Saturday, 3rd September.
Returning to the UK’s finest concours event for the third time, Silverstone Auctions welcomed hundreds of collectors and enthusiasts to its marquee within the stunning grounds of Blenheim Palace for the Salon Privé Sale. Featuring one of its highest ever quality catalogues, the auction house successfully hammered away more than £3.4million worth of classic cars.

A very special 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III Roadster, that starred in the second ever episode of legendary BBC sitcom Only Fools & Horses, sold for an impressive £115,875. Invited to appear in the episode titled “Go West Young Man", and forever since been known as "Boycie's E-Type” the car was hard fought over by several buyers in the room, the largely original and one owner from new car, sold for more than £40,000 over its lower estimate.
Another beautiful Jaguar convertible, a 1959 Jaguar XK150 3.4 S Drophead Coupe, sold for £189,000, again more than £40,000 over its lower estimate.
Leading up to the auction house’ second ever Porsche only sale, several highly desirable Porsches sold for strong prices. One of the finest Silverstone Auctions’ had ever seen, a 1988 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo, sold for £171,000 including premium, a huge £60,000 over its lower estimate.
Taking pride of place next to the auction rostrum, an original UK 1963 Porsche 356B TG Super 90, that at the time of consignment was the only right-hand drive Super 90 Coupé on the market in the UK, sold for £146,250. A very well presented and maintained 1971 Porsche 911 T sold for £69,750, while those who prefer a more modern 911 were clearly impressed by a 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, which sold for £208,125 including premium.
Speaking after the sale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale said: “I’m delighted with the results we’ve achieved on behalf of our vendors. It’s always great to see both happy sellers and buyers at an auction and we’ve certainly seen that this weekend.”
Collectors of American classics were drawn to an incredible 1968 Shelby GT500, which sold for £142,875, more than £42,000 over its lower estimate. Offered publicly for sale for the first time ever in Europe, the car came a deluxe Marti Report and was included in the Shelby World Register.
The appetite for rare, high quality, low mileage modern classics does not appear to be slowing. A 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, with an unbelievable 885 miles from new, sold for £202,500.
A sure-fire future collectible, a 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe sold for £127,125, while a very rare 1995 Mercedes-Benz SL60 AMG, one of just 49 right-hand drive cars produced and with just 13,500 miles covered, sold for £56,250.
From Munich, another very rare car, a 1990 BMW E30 M3 Convertible, sold for £59,625, more than £20,000 over its lower estimate.
Silverstone Auctions’ next sale, The Porsche Sale, takes place back at its spiritual home of Silverstone race circuit on Saturday 15th October, followed by its final sale of the year the NEC Classic Motor Show on the 12thand 13th November.
Nick added: “If you missed the chance to sell with us this summer we’re now inviting entries for our final sales of the year. The Porsche Sale, held in conjunction with Porsche Club GB, is a chance for Porsche fans to buy and sell the finest available selection on the market. Our two-day sale at the UK’s biggest classic car show is always one of the highlight sales of the year.”

The E-type that appeared in Only Fools and Horses is up for auction at the Silverstone Auctions at Blenheim Palace.

  • Bocycie’s Jaguar E-Type which starred in the BBC’s Only Fools and Horses is to be offered at auction by Silverstone Auctions at Salon Privé.
  • The one owner car has been lovingly looked after and is in largely original condition.
  • It will be offered with a sale estimate of between £75,000 and £85,000.
A very special Jaguar E-Type which starred in the BBC’s famous comedy series, Only Fools and Horses, will be offered for sale at Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé Sale on 3rd September at Blenheim Palace.
The 1973 Series III Roadster was delivered new to Henlys of London on 11th October 1973 and purchased by its first and only owner, a successful Swansea businessman, who has cruised his E-Type along the Welsh Riviera with the top down for the last four decades.

In 1981, UYP 695M was invited to star in the second ever episode of Only Fools and Horses, titled Go West Young Man, in which Boycie, the local second hand car dealer played by John Challis, purchases the car as a birthday gift for his ‘bit on the side’. Del Boy (David Jason) and Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) then decide to borrow the car for a night out on the tiles, which naturally does not go quite as planned. On their way home, Rodney accidentally throws a cigar pack out of the window on which are written the phone numbers of some girls, causing Del Boy to hit the brakes and another car to crash into them.
This was of course a staged accident with no damage caused to the car itself, which has been lovingly looked after by its owner for its whole life. This exemplary E-Type earned its place in British television history, known ever since as “Boycie’s E-Type”.
This impressive car is immediately recognisable from its television appearance, finished in Old English White with a blue leather interior. Included with the car is a die-cast model of the E-Type signed by both David Jason and John Challis and presented in a frame with mounted stills of the car's appearance in the episode.
When asked about his time filming with the car, John Challis remarked, "It's only E-Type Jaguars and Adam Peaty that makes me proud to be British these days," paraphrasing his original line from the episode, and alluding to the recent British success at the Rio Olympics.
After ten years in storage in a heated garage, this year the car was treated to a light recommissioning including new shock absorbers and battery, as well as a full service. Reading 79,000 miles, and coming with a comprehensive history file including 16 previous MOTs, two sets of original keys, tool roll, jack and a current MoT until May 2017, it heads to auction with a sale estimate of between £75,000 and £85,000.
“It’s one of the joys of the auction world to be able to offer a car that is rather special in every way,” explains Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions. “Not only does it have the distinction of having been featured in one of the best loved television comedies of all time, it’s also a beautiful and extremely well looked after example in largely original condition.”

The Top gear Star In A Reasonably Priced Car, Vauxhall Astra is on eBay to raise money for the BEN Charity.

  • BBC Top Gear’s Reasonably Priced Vauxhall Astra back up for auction to raise money for BEN
  • 2013 Astra driven by Will Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch
  • New eBay auction opening today: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/231913252015
The Vauxhall Astra used in the last series of BBC’s Top Gear as their Reasonably Priced Car is up back for sale to raise money for the automotive support network BEN.
The 2013 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 was driven by a host of celebrities including Tom Hiddleston, Jack Whitehall and Steven Tyler. The car, donated by Vauxhall Motors, was initially offered for auction late last year, but with the original sale now fallen through, the way is clear for one lucky Top Gear fan to bid for the vehicle on eBay as well as contribute to a worthy cause.

BEN is committed to making positive differences to the lives of people within the automotive industry and their dependents. The organisation offers a wide range of free and confidential information, advice and Support Services, along with the provision of residential, nursing and specialist care services at multiple care centres around the UK.
David Main, Chief Executive at BEN said: “It is a shame the original sale fell through, but this of course does mean another chance for a Top Gear fan to get their hands on a piece of the show’s history, after all this was the last car to be used in the show’s previous format.”
He added: “Who knows, perhaps Chris Evans or Matt Le Blanc may fancy bidding on it themselves?!”
With an estimated 350 million views in 170 different countries per week, the 2013 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 was initiated with a star-studded barbeque, featuring celebrities including comedians Jimmy Carr and Warwick Davis, and singers Brian Johnson and Joss Stone. Celebrities such as Olly Murs, who topped the leader board, Margot Robbie, Ron Howard and James Blunt all thrashed it around the Top Gear Test Track at Dunsfold Park, Surrey.
The five-door Power Red 1.6-litre 115bhp Vauxhall Astra Tech Line will be auction on eBay, from today for 2 weeks until 28th April, with a reserve of £10,000 - all proceeds from the sale will be donated to BEN.
The spec:
  • Mileage – 2,908
  • 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels
  • Sat-nav system with seven-inch colour monitor
  • Three-spoke leather-covered sports steering wheel
  • Multi-function trip computer
  • USB connection with iPod control
  • Mobile phone system with Bluetooth
  • Digital radio with six premium speakers
  • Chrome-effect exterior side window surround
  • Front Corbeau Sprint Racing seats with 5 point safety belt harness and full roll-cage
IMPORTANT NOTE: Bidders should be aware that the airbags have all been disabled making room for the roll-cage.  To re-instate the airbags would involve removing the roll-cage and seating.  So, in its current state, the car is not type-approved and should not be driven on the road.  The Vauxhall Technical Team will work with the successful bidder at handover to fully explain how the vehicle has been adapted. Please be aware converting the vehicle back into use on the public highway would incur significant cost.

The Jaguar XF has been named the BBC Top Gear magazine, Saloon Car Of The Year in their Awards ceremony.

  • Jaguar XF is named BBC Top Gear’s Saloon Car of the Year, adding another major award to its trophy cabinet
  • Top Gear praised the XF’s innovative aluminium-intensive architecture, comfortable ride and impressive performance
  • Top Gear Magazine’s expert motoring journalists, with input from The Stig, rated and reviewed more than 300 cars to find the best in each category
The Jaguar XF has been crowned BBC Top Gear’s Saloon Car of the Year, praised for its ‘immaculate blend of comfort and verve’. It’s the latest in a series of major awards for the new XF, having been named Best Executive Car at the Fleet News Awards and Best Director’s Car at the SME Company Car Awards in the last month alone.

Top Gear Magazine praised the XF’s stiff, lightweight aluminium-intensive construction in particular, which enables the highest standards of performance, efficiency, safety and dynamics. More importantly for the Top Gear judges, it gives the XF a critical edge in the formidably competitive Saloon Car category.
Each of the Top Gear Magazine Awards winners is picked by the publication’s expert motoring journalists – and The Stig – who rate and review more than 300 cars each year, before announcing the best in each category.

Speaking about the XF’s lightweight construction, Jack Rix, Deputy Editor, Top Gear Magazine said: “It cuts a hefty 190kg from the old XF (and comes in around 80kg less than the equivalent BMW 5-Series) but it’s also stiffer and frees up more interior space. The cleanest model emits a mere 104g/km of CO2, unthinkable with steel underpinnings, while the one with the F-TYPE’s 375bhp supercharged V6 can cover 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds.”

Ford takes Car of the year & hot Hatch of the Year for the Ford Focus RS from BBC Top Gear magazine.

“You don’t always need to spend big money to have a huge amount of fun”
BBC Top Gear Magazine Awards Issue, celebrating the greatest cars of the year and representing the best of the best.
The Ford Focus RS, has claimed the title of BBC Top Gear Magazine’s Car of the Year, beating off serious competition from the significantly higher priced models, such as Porsche and Ferrari, to be the overall winner for one of the most coveted awards in the motoring industry.
Every year, Top Gear Magazine rates and reviews over 300 new cars. Each award winner is selected by Top Gear's expert motoring journalists – including some help from The Stig - and now the top 18 have been named.

The Focus is the latest in the long line of fast Fords to carry the iconic RS badge and the judges described it as a car that “combines such vivid personality with real practicality and serves it up at such a tempting price”. Naturally, it also picked up a second award in the Hot Hatch category.
With a £29,995 price tag, the Ford Focus RS is one of cheapest cars on the list with a top speed of 165mph and hitting 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. Winning Car of the Year is no stranger to Ford; the Fiesta ST also won the award in 2013.
Charlie Turner, Editor-In-Chief, Top Gear Magazine says “The Focus RS really is the complete package and claims our top award ahead of other category winners costing ten times as much.
It delivers accessible performance and entertainment, with looks and practicality thrown in, and proves you don’t always need to spend big money to have a huge amount of fun. When it came to the voting the decision was unanimous - the Focus RS is a hugely worthy winner of the TopGear Car of The Year.”
In the Manufacturer of the Year category, McLaren picked up the award after launching three world beaters in 2015 with the 570S, 675LT and P1 GTR. A triumph for the (relatively) young car company from the UK.
Other notable winners include: Mazda, who picked up the Roadster of the Year Award for the new version of the iconic MX-5; and Urban Warrior of the Year for the CX-3, described as an “urban SUV with a sense of humour”.
Porsche once again demonstrated their performance pedigree; picking up two awards; the Hardcore Car of the Year with the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Sports Car of the Year for the Porsche Cayman GT4.
Top Gear magazine has had a complete overhaul, with a fresh look and re-design. There are new sections, layouts and feature formats. Plus, some of the new presenters from the show are featured in the Awards Issue with Chris Evans, Eddie Jordan, Chris Harris and Rory Reid all contributing.
The full results and details are available in the special Awards issue of the magazine on sale Wednesday 23 March 2016.

Vauxhall responds to the panorama programme that states the Zafira is rigged, the BBC refuses to share info, WHY ?

TMW THOUGHTS

If there was in fact any issues with teh car that was tested, why is thet the BBC has refused to allow the brand to review the infomation, and to be informed of the way the test was set up, run and teh condition of the car that was used, maybe there is something in it that Vauxhall states it believes in wrong doing by the BBC, if there is nothing to hide, why refuse to allow the sharing of info ?????
----------
Vauxhall has clearly stated that its vehicles do not have any feature that detects that a vehicle is undergoing an emissions test, including any feature that would respond to wheels turning.
Vauxhall products comply with all regulatory requirements, including the in-service emissions testing program, according to EU rules. These requirements are periodically audited by the approval authority.
All Pictures below are used solely for illustrative purposes only and should not be considered to be part of, or inferred within the BBC Programme, Panorama - If there is any confusion, then just ignore the pictures.

We suspect that the vehicle tested (Zafira 1.6 diesel) was not performing correctly and/or the test execution was not correctly set up.  In order that Panorama did not potentially draw the wrong conclusions from their testing we requested full test reports and data from the testing including how the vehicle and test was set up, the technical state of the vehicle and details of the pre-conditioning of the vehicle which is necessary to achieve a stabilised condition for the test.
Panorama has refused to share information on the technical accuracy of the test prior to the broadcast.
When DUH tested the Zafira in Germany they were not willing to share their results before they went public.  We subsequently concluded that the campaign contained misleading elements. In response to the incorrect accusations of DUH we ran a full series of tests. Those tests proved that the Zafira 1.6 meets all the legal emission limits both in 2WD and 4WD roller testing. Those 4WD tests were conducted under the supervision of the TUV agency and officially protocolled.

Jeremy Clarkson, Love him or loathe him, you can't deny he is always good for a story !

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but i don't think that anyone would ever have thought that this would have been the reason for why Jeremy was to be given the boot by the BBC, and in such a huge media focussed way too.

It is without doubt the Clarkson, May and Hammond have moulded Top Gear into a worldwide phenomenon, that is watched by, a rough estimation of 350 million people all over the globe, and it is also without question that no matter what country tries to emulate that show, into it's own, has not been anywhere near as successful.

The British Top Gear, is a world beater, so what will the BBC do now ! the trio were all due to renew their contracts at the end of this month, meaning more Top Gear for us all for at least another year, but with the high profile loss of Jeremy, will Hammond and May want to continue without him ?

Or, will, as suspected all three up sticks and go somewhere where they will be more appreciated by their new employers, after all, if they can bring in half the profits that they did for the BBC, any company would be clamouring to get hold of them, and will pay handsomely.

The BBC has mishandled TG over the years, by cutting its budgets, cutting the shows, to as low as SIX in a year, knowing full well that they can milk more out of it, I am sure that, given decent budgets and more shows, the new show, if it ever happens, would be a massive hit, even on pay channels, so Murdoch, get your cheque book out and start waving !!!!

But lets go back to what happened that fateful day, well, for what we know, the team had been filming a very long day, and this was not the first, by all accounts, the arrived at the hotel, followed by JC later, only to find that the catering was not to his liking, fair enough, but the ranting that followed was heard by people all over the hotel, and the "Fracas" as theyhave called it, developed into something physical, not the all out fist fight that others would have you believe, but a slap in the face.

It was after all this that JC contacted the BBC and advised them of what had gone on, no one else, the other party, took themselves to hospital, for a slightly swollen lip, with a minor cut, now most normal people might well have just hit him back, or walked away to stop the fire in its tracks, but this never happened.

Was it really necessary to go to hospital, after ten years of working with JC, surely he would have been fully aware of what may or may not have set him off, apart from the fact that JC was going through a very personal issue at the time, and the stress and worry that, that incurred, so surely if you're aware that someone is quite possibly in a slightly "off" mental state, would you not be more aware and ensure that you did everything in your power to avoid friction ?

Now, please do not think i am actively saying that JC should have gotten away with it, i am not, far from it, but i do fear that the BBC has, decided to take action here, where in other cases of public outcry, they have not, Saville, Hall and Harris come to mind, it is reported that the BBC were aware of these accusations against at least one of these, and did NOTHING, i feel that, that is a far far worse incident than the "fracas".

The Jonathan Ross/Russell Brand Sachsgate incident also was brushed under the carpet, with Ross back at the Beeb, again, this was a far worse incident than the incident in Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago, so, please BBC, you need to be very careful, because your decisions are not even handed, you seem to be able to let some things go by with out doing anything.

What about the stars that have been to court for GBH or Drink Driving, there has been plenty of them recently, and yet they still work for the BBC, I would have though that a Drunk Driver would be a worse incident as they could well have killed someone, but hey, we must not do anything to hurt the BBC's Crown Jewel, but back to JC.

Did he deserve to be sacked, maybe, but should it have been judge, jury and executioner by media, definitely not, there has been too much written and said that could have had an effect on the outcome, and thats not right, fair or acceptable, if it happened.

Below is a transcript of the findings of the BBC.

Investigation findings – Ken MacQuarrie On 9 March 2015,

Jeremy Clarkson reported to BBC management that he had been involved in a physical and verbal incident with Oisin Tymon, the producer of Top Gear, at the Simonstone Hall Hotel, North Yorkshire, whilst working on location.

The incident had occurred on 4 March 2015 and Jeremy Clarkson was suspended on 10 March, pending investigation. I was asked to undertake an investigation to establish the facts of what occurred. In conducting my investigation, in line with the BBC’s usual practice, I interviewed a number of witnesses and others connected with the incident.

Accounts were agreed, based on my interviews, with each participant. Having conducted these interviews and considered the evidence presented, I conclude the following: on 4 March 2015 Oisin Tymon was subject to an unprovoked physical and verbal attack by Jeremy Clarkson.

During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip. The verbal abuse was sustained over a longer period, both at the time of the physical attack and subsequently. Specific facts I have found as part of my investigation are as follows:

  • earlier on 4 March, studio recording of Top Gear had taken place in Surrey and the presenters had travelled that same evening to the location shoot in North Yorkshire;
  • the incident occurred on a patio area of the Simonstone Hall Hotel, where Oisin Tymon was working on location for Top Gear;
  • the physical attack lasted around 30 seconds and was halted by the intervention of a witness;
  • it is the case that Oisin Tymon offered no retaliation;
  • the verbal abuse was directed at Oisin Tymon on more than one occasion – both during the attack and subsequently inside the hotel – and contained the strongest expletives and threats to sack him. The abuse was at such volume as to be heard in the dining room, and the shouting was audible in a hotel bedroom;
  • derogatory and abusive language, relating to Oisin Tymon and other members of the Top Gear team, continued to be used by Jeremy Clarkson inside the hotel, in the presence of others, for a sustained period of time;
  • it is clear that Oisin Tymon was shocked and distressed by the incident, and believed that he had lost his job;
  • following the attack, I understand that Oisin Tymon drove to a nearby A&E department for examination;
  • over the subsequent days, Jeremy Clarkson made a number of attempts to apologise to Oisin Tymon by way of text, email and in person; and
  • it is the case that Jeremy Clarkson reported the incident to BBC management.

It was not disputed by Jeremy Clarkson or any witness that Oisin Tymon was the victim of an unprovoked physical and verbal attack. It is also clear to me that Oisin Tymon is an important creative member of the Top Gear team who is well-valued and respected. He has suffered significant personal distress as a result of this incident, through no fault of his own.

And below is the Outcome of these findings.

Tony Hall, the BBC Director-General, has today released the following statement regarding Jeremy Clarkson.
It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract. It is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have done so only after a very careful consideration of the facts and after personally meeting both Jeremy and Oisin Tymon.
I am grateful to Ken MacQuarrie for the thorough way he has conducted an investigation of the incident on 4th March. Given the obvious and very genuine public interest in this I am publishing the findings of his report. I take no pleasure in doing so. I am only making them public so people can better understand the background. I know how popular the programme is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion. The main facts are not disputed by those involved.
I want to make three points.
First – The BBC is a broad church. Our strength in many ways lies in that diversity. We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect. I cannot condone what has happened on this occasion. A member of staff – who is a completely innocent party – took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.
Second – This has obviously been difficult for everyone involved but in particular for Oisin. I want to make clear that no blame attaches to him for this incident. He has behaved with huge integrity throughout. As a senior producer at the BBC he will continue to have an important role within the organisation in the future.
Third – Obviously none of us wanted to find ourselves in this position. This decision should in no way detract from the extraordinary contribution that Jeremy Clarkson has made to the BBC. I have always personally been a great fan of his work and Top Gear. Jeremy is a huge talent. He may be leaving the BBC but I am sure he will continue to entertain, challenge and amuse audiences for many years to come.
The BBC must now look to renew Top Gear for 2016. This will be a big challenge and there is no point in pretending otherwise. I have asked Kim Shillinglaw to look at how best we might take this forward over the coming months. I have also asked her to look at how we put out the last programmes in the current series.

So, in conclusion, he got what he asked for, he should not have done what did, however, it tried on a number of occasions to apologies, and allegedly these were all knocked back by the injured party, possibly if he were more of a man and accepted the apology and talked it out with JC, none of this would have happened.
Now we have a TV show that will never be the same again, that means that millions of viewers in this country will lose out, and 350 million around the globe will too, no amount of tweaking and changing will take away the fact that JC made Tg what it is, and without him, and possibly the other two, it will be a ship that sinks, and sinks quickly.

Personally, I hope they all three, go to SKY, or Dave or whoever and get a decent budget and series length and give us back the fun, silliness and laughs that we all need these days, instead of what i fear the BBC will now give us, a drab Politically correct TV show that bores the arse of us.
