The All-New Hyundai Ioniq gains the full five star award from Euro NCAP.

• Euro NCAP tested the All-New IONIQ and awarded it an overall maximum five-star safety rating

Hyundai Motor’s All-New IONIQ received the maximum five-star safety rating from the independent vehicle assessment organisation Euro NCAP. 

In the test the IONIQ achieved top marks in the four categories: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist, proving it is one of the safest cars in its segment. 

The IONIQ features a long list of standard active safety features on all versions including Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and Smart Cruise Control. 

With the IONIQ Hyundai Motor is democratising electric mobility offering world’s first car which offers customers the choice between three electrified powertrain models: hybrid, electric and plug-in hybrid.

Superior active safety is a standard feature of the IONIQ

Euro NCAP tested the IONIQ’s standard-equipment Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with good overall performance. The system alerts drivers to emergency situations, braking autonomously if required. Using front radar and camera sensors, AEB operates in three stages. Initially warning the driver visually and acoustically, it controls the brake according to the collision danger stage and applies maximum braking force just before the moment of collision. When a vehicle or pedestrian is sensed in front of the car, the system is activated, operates at speeds of 8 km/h or above, and avoids a collision or minimises damage when a collision is otherwise unavoidable.

Enhancing the IONIQ’s standard safety features is the Lane Keeping Assist system including Lane Departure Warning. This alerts the driver acoustically and visually if the car crosses road markings without indicating, and applies slight force to the steering wheel in order to guide the driver back to a safe position. The system was thoroughly examined by Euro NCAP and passed all tests successfully.

The Smart Cruise Control, fitted standard in every IONIQ, also contributed to the five-star rating. It maintains a constant speed and distance from the vehicle ahead by accelerating or braking automatically. The Advanced Smart Cruise Control in the IONIQ Electric also enables stop-and-go functionality.

Besides the technologies tested by Euro NCAP, the IONIQ also offers Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These systems warn the driver of surrounding vehicles, passengers or other objects that may lead to a collision if unnoticed while the car is in motion – a further safety feature of the IONIQ.

Passive safety rounds off the impressive Euro NCAP result

As for passive safety, the light yet rigid body is the result of advanced design, construction methods and materials for the entire IONIQ line-up. Featuring 53% Advanced High Strength Steel, the chassis benefits from superior rigidity for responsive handling and is extremely safe, with high impact energy absorption and minimised distortion in order to protect passengers in the event of a collision. Body structure improvements, complemented by a high-strength fibre-reinforced rear bumper, make the entire IONIQ line-up strong and durable. A total of seven airbags are positioned around the interior of the IONIQ, including a knee airbag for the driver – another factor that was central to the positive Euro NCAP test result.

The IONIQ Hybrid and the IONIQ Electric are now on sale throughout Europe. The IONIQ Plug-in will be introduced in 2017.

The Hyundai Sonata continues to offer a strong lineup in 2017 with three efficient powertrain options, great technology, and newly available dynamic bending light. The 2017 Sonata starts at $21,600, excluding $835 freight charge, which is $150 less than last year and makes it the most affordable midsize sedan*.

2017 Sonata Packaging changes maximize value, safety, and comfort at every price point across the lineup. Price dropped $600 on the Sonata Eco to just $23,125 and the Sport 2.0T came down an incredible $2,300 from last year to $26,600.

Dynamic bending light bolsters an already impressive list of available safety features on the 2017 Sonata, including:

Sonatas equipped with blind spot detection receive additional benefits of lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

The 2017 Sonata comes standard with Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System, seven airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag, four-wheel disc brakes and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with indicators for each tire.

An all four-cylinder lineup continues to power the Sonata in 2017. The base, naturally-aspirated engine, the 2.4-liter Theta II GDI, produces 185 peak horsepower and 178 lb. ft. of torque. 

The Sonata Eco comes with a 1.6-liter, turbocharged Gamma engine and delivers 178 peak horsepower and 195 lb. ft. of torque. It mates to an efficient seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. 

Eco models achieve 28 and 36 mpg EPA fuel economy, city and highway, and 31 mpg combined. The range-topping 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI generates 245 peak horsepower and 260 lb. ft. of torque. 

Both Theta engines are paired with a six-speed SHIFTRONIC ^®automatic transmission.

These powertrains move great technology down the road. The 2017 Sonata is available with many comfort and convenience features like our hands-free smart trunk, 8-inch navigation display, Apple CarPlay ™, Android Auto™, electronic parking brake, and Blue Link telematics system. Standard features include drive mode select (change the engine and transmission settings between eco, normal, and sport. 

Choose between normal and sport steering feel, all at the push of a button), remote keyless entry with alarm, body color heated exterior power mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise control, and Bluetooth hands-free phone system. 

Hyundai replaced the color Venetian Red Pearl with a more vibrant Scarlet Red.

Kia is developing an Autonomous driving car and will be on the roads by 2030, $2Bn investment starts now.

By 2020, Kia plans to introduce a range of partially-autonomous driving technologies to its model line-up, and is aiming to bring its first fully-autonomous car to market by 2030.

The initial stage of investment by Kia – totalling US$2 billion by 2018 – will enable the company to develop the first of its new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) technologies and employ a greater number of engineers. The investment will lead to the introduction of Kia’s next-generation smart vehicles in the coming years.

Kia Advanced Driver Assistance System

With ADAS still in its infancy, Kia – as part of the Hyundai Motor Group – is working closely with suppliers and affiliated companies to develop a range of technologies across three distinct categories to enable a vehicle to drive autonomously:

• ‘Recognition’ – the development of new sensors to detect other vehicles and hazards, read the road ahead and identify poor driving conditions
• ‘Judgment’ – advanced computing systems allowing the car to make decisions based on the information gathered by ADAS sensors
• ‘Control’ – active electronic and mechanical systems allowing the vehicle to carry out the decisions taken by the autonomous technology in any given situation

Many of Kia’s new ADAS technologies require simultaneous input from more than one sensor, and much of Kia’s investment intoresearch and development is allowing the car manufacturer to secure localisedknowledge and establish a production-base for the high precision sensors required to realise autonomous driving technologies.

Introduction of partially-autonomous driving technologies by 2020

Kia is planning to introduce a range of partially-autonomous ADAS technologies in the coming years, with an array of new functions anticipated for introduction to market by 2020.

Among the new technologies currently under development is Highway Driving Assist (HDA), which combines a Lane Guidance System (LGS) and Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC). HDA is designed to automatically maintain a safe distance from cars in front while keeping the car in its lane on the motorway and adhering to local speed limitsusing information from the navigation system. The system will also assist in safely overtaking other cars on the motorway.

Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), currently under development by Kia, will help make light work of heavy congestion by tracking the vehicle in front during moderate-to-highly congested traffic conditions. The system employs a range of sensors to maintain a safe distance from the car in front and keep the vehicle within its lane. Using TJA, drivers will find it easier – and more relaxing – to navigate traffic jams on often-congested roads.

To make Kia vehicles among the easiest cars to park, the company is developing further technologies to enable cars to complete low-speed manoeuvres more easily. Enhancing Kia’s existing Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS), which enables the car to park itself in parallel or perpendicular spaces with minimal driver input, Kia will also introduce Remote Advanced Parking Assist System (RAPAS), allowing Kia vehicles to park themselves when the driver presses the smart key button while within a certain range of the car.

At all times, the new range of ADAS technologies can be circumvented by direct driver control, enabling closer control of the car as desired.

These new technologies will join the suite of technologies already offered by Kia on its latest production vehicles in many of its global markets, including the Sorento and the soon-to-be-launched all-new Optima and Sportage. 

These technologies are primarily designed to make driving safer and easier for Kia customers by identifying hazards at the earliest possible opportunity and allowing the driver – or the car – to take the appropriate reaction. 

Existing Kia technologies include Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Auto Emergency Braking (AEB) and Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC).

Kia plans to bring fully-autonomous cars to market within 15 years

Overthe longer-term, Kia is targeting 2030 for the introduction of fully-autonomous vehicles. As a key part of Kia’s development of fully-autonomous driving technologies – the true ‘self-driving car’ – Kia is focusing R&D resources on vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication.

By enabling cars to effectively communicate directly and independently with their surroundings, Kia will be able to make ADAS-equipped vehicles as safe and efficient as possible.

2015 Hyundai Genesis was named the Sedan of the Year by popular men’s magazine Esquire

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis was named the Sedan of the Year by popular men’s magazine Esquire for its luxurious design and smooth drive, while delivering value to owners. 

The Esquire judges took the considered vehicles out to its proving grounds, which was an all-public road set in rolling hills that includes 17 miles of tight turns, hard-breaking zones and floor-stomping straights.

“The redesigned Genesis stood out as this year’s 2014 Esquire Sedan of the Year for providing owners the best experience possible with its superior driving dynamics,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of corporate and product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Esquire is one of the world’s most iconic men’s publications, which adds validity that Genesis delivers on outstanding design, advanced safety and technology – all components that matter most to today’s premium car shoppers.”

The all-new 2015 Hyundai Genesis was named today a Top Ten Car of 2015 by the jurors of the Hispanic Motor Press Awards. Honored as the “Best Luxury Car” at the annual Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2015 Genesis represents a bold step forward for Hyundai as it also has proven to have the ability to appeal to a wide variety of demographics in a very competitive market.
