IRELAND - Audi's new small SUV, the Q2 wins in Automotive Brand Contest.

  • Audi Q2 wins in Automotive Brand Contest
  • Polygonal design enriches the form language of the brand
  • Audi wins awards in nine additional categories
The all-new Audi Q2 is a winner in the prestigious Automotive Brand Contest: The compact SUV captured “Best of the Best” honours in the Exterior Premium Brand category.
The polygonal design of the all-new Audi Q2 adds new facets to the brand’s distinctive form language.

The highly positioned and front defining, octagonal single frame grille is a variation on the polygon theme, as are the structure of the two large, strongly contoured air inlets. The rear terminates dynamically with a long roof edge spoiler and a diffuser.
The play of polygonal shapes also creates attractive effects on the flanks of the Q2. Below the windows, the sharply drawn shoulder line divides into two contours and frame a concave surface with six corners. The concave shape of the flanks emphasises the wheels and adds to the quattro® character of the compact SUV.
“In the Audi Q2, we have developed a distinctively geometric formal language with special design characteristics specific to this model,” said Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte. “As a result the car exhibits an independent character within the Q family.”
In addition to the prize for the new Q2, Audi prevailed in nine other categories: The premium car brand was declared the winner for, among other things, the OLED rear lights in the Audi TT RS (Parts & Accessories category), for its virtual technical communication (Corporate Publishing category) and for the nationwide market introduction of the Audi A4 (Events category).
The Automotive Brand Contest is presented by the German Design Council and is one of the most prestigious design competitions in the automotive industry. The award ceremony will be held in Paris on 29 September 2016.
The Audi Q2 will launch in Ireland in Q4 2016. Pricing will be announced later this summer.

McLaren and the 570S gets its first ever ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ for design quality & groundbreaking design.

‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ for design quality and groundbreaking design. The internationally renowned awards were judged by a highly regarded independent jury of 41 members, and this latest award celebrates the aerodynamic focus of the 570S CoupĂ© which introduces the McLaren design language to the sports car segment for the first time.

The Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016 saw around 5,200 items entered, and the Red Dot jury, consisting of independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists were unanimous in awarding the first model in the McLaren Sports Series with the coveted ‘Red Dot: Best of the Best’ title.
Taut body lines mark the 570S Coupé out from the competition, and the final design is closely matched to the initial sketches first proposed by Chief Designer Rob Melville and the design team at McLaren Automotive from outset of the project. Clean, sweeping lines and an uncluttered exterior have a clear focus on the way air flows over the sculpted panels, channelling air around the tightly packaged glasshouse, over and, in some areas, through the bodywork with a fixed aerodynamic package
Commenting on the design of the 570S Coupe, Melville explained: ‘The dynamic design of the 570S CoupĂ© is rooted in its aerodynamic function and was optimised to provide innovative visual presence. This approach combines fluid surfaces and strong features to deliver a final aerodynamic shape designed to optimise air flow management in, out and around the vehicle. Weight is minimised through the layering of panels, designed to float above aerodynamic surfaces along with suspended elements, supporting the potency of this compact sports car.’
On receipt of the award, Melville continued: ‘The 570S Coupe has enjoyed a fantastic reception since launching last year, and to be recognised by Red Dot with a ‘Best of the Best’ title is a real honour.’

The Kia Sportage & Optima receive the prestigious Red Dot international design prize – for the 2nd time each

  • All-new Kia Sportage and the Optima receive the prestigious Red Dot international design prize – for the second time each
  • ‘Best of the Best’ award for Optima saloon in its category
  • Every model in the current Kia range has now won a ‘Red Dot’
  • 15 Red Dot awards earned by Kia since 2009
Kia Motors has once again reinforced its reputation for the highest design standards, picking up two prizes at the 2016 ‘Red Dot Awards’ for Product Design, one of the most prestigious international product design competitions.
The new Kia Sportage compact SUV and Optima saloon – the carmaker’s two latest models – both received coveted ‘Red Dots’. The independent judging panel even honoured the Kia Optima with a ‘Best of the Best’ award, the competition’s highest distinction, for which only the most ground-breaking designs in a category are eligible.
The new generations of the Optima and the European Kia bestseller, the Sportage, were launched across Kia’s global markets earlier this year.

These new prizes have seen both models defending their Red Dot Awards – both the previous generations of the Kia Sportage and Kia Optima also received Red Dot awards in 2011, while the Optima retains its ‘Best of the Best’ prize. Since 2009, when the first-generation Kia Soul won the carmaker’s first award in the competition, Kia’s design teams have gone on to achieve a total of 15 Red Dot Awards.
Now, in 2016, every model in the current Kia product range has a Red Dot.
Peter Schreyer, President and Chief Designer of Kia Motors Corporation and Hyundai Motor Group, commented: “Our international design team has every cause to be exceptionally proud of these most recent awards.
The first Red Dot Awards for the Kia Sportage and the Optima were already great successes. It is a very special achievement to further develop a first-rate, prize-winning model so that the new design also convinces the expert jury of this globally respected and prestigious design competition.
“The two award-winners are important models for our brand. The Sportage has been the brand’s bestseller in Europe for many years.
The Kia Optima, which is one of the strongest selling Kia models worldwide, also embodies the development of brand in a very special way: the third generation, which arrived on the global stage in 2010, acted as the catalyst for the design-led transformation of Kia’s product range in the following years.
Both the new Kia Sportage and the new Kia Optima stand out very strongly from their rivals in their respective categories on account of the clarity, distinction and sporty elegance of their exterior design.
Both cars also feature a completely redesigned, premium-standard interior with modern, horizontally aligned and very ‘clean-looking’ design.”
Dynamic design and a bold on-road presence
The all-new Kia Optima was developed by the international Kia design teams in Namyang (Korea), Irvine (California, USA), and Frankfurt (Germany), under the creative direction of Peter Schreyer, who was also responsible for the design of the previous-generation Kia Optima.
The 4.86-metre long new model, whose dimensions have been altered only very slightly, features modern surface details, sharply drawn lines and edges, and a longer silhouette, giving it an even bolder on-road presence than its predecessors.
This is partly due to the elongated window line, with the addition of a third side window behind the rear door. The characteristic profile with the swept-back A- and C-pillars has been retained, both of which give the model the appearance of a sports sedan.
At the rear, the back lights sweep around to the side, giving the Kia Optima a new, modern light signature.
The new design of the Kia Sportage was developed under the leadership of the European Kia Design Center in Frankfurt with the support of Kia’s Design Centers in Namyang and Irvine.
The most striking change to the exterior design is the distinctive new ‘face’ of the compact SUV. The headlights, which used to form a visual unit with Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille are now noticeably separate from the grille, making the front view broader and more stable.
The compact SUV has retained its characteristic profile, and the side view – partly due to the 40 mm longer body, at 4.48 metres – is now even more dynamic in its design.
The new ‘GT Line’ model presents a sportier appearance, with a number of exclusive design elements, including a redesigned grille, ‘ice cube’-style fog lamps, under-body cladding at the front and rear, and twin exhaust tailpipes.
Both models are available with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, and can be ordered with state-of-the-art assistance systems – including Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian recognition. In the European safety test Euro NCAP, both models received the highest rating of five stars.
Red Dot Award: a jury of 41 design experts from all over the world
The ‘Red Dot Design Award’, one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions, is divided into the three disciplines: Product Design, Communication Design and Design Concept.
For the 2016 Red Dot Awards, companies from 57 countries registered 5,214 products and innovations. The competition, which has been held since 1955 by the Design Centre of North Rhine-Westphalia, attaches great importance to the impartiality of its high-calibre jury.
To avoid any bias, none of the jury members may be an employee of the manufacturing industry. This year the ‘Red Dot’ jury was larger than ever:
The 41 experts from all over the world – freelance designers, design professors and trade journalists – included Chris Bangle, Jimmy Choo, Professor Lutz FĂĽgener, Hideshi Hamaguchi, Kristiina Lassus, Raj Nandan, and Ken Okuyama.
All members of the jury travelled to Essen, Germany and judged the products according to criteria such as degree of innovation, formal quality, functionality and ecological compatibility. The official presentation of the Red Dot Awards will take place on 4 July 2016 in Essen at the Aalto Theater.

Mazda's CX-3, MX-5 and Mazda 2 City Car win Red Dot Awards 2015.

  • Mazda MX-5, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda2 distinguished this year by design centre
  • Every single new-generation model has now been honoured for its KODO exterior
Three new Mazdas, three more awards. The Japanese carmaker will take away accolades for the all-new Mazda MX-5, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda2 from the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 ceremony in June.
The fourth-generation of the iconic roadster has won the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” prize, the contest’s highest distinction, bestowed on only 1.6% of the submissions this year for exceptionally ground-breaking designs. The CX-3, Mazda’s first small SUV, was chosen for a “Red Dot” award for outstanding design quality.

Finally, the all-new Mazda2 receives an “Honourable Mention”. The Red Dot jury assessed the entries based on a number of criteria ranging from design innovation to functionality, ergonomics and ecological compatibility.
The company’s three newest models thus follow in the path of preceding new-generation Mazdas. All have now won prizes in recognition of their head-turning KODO – Soul of Motion exterior designs, including Red Dot awards for five of them. KODO’s lines and shapes represent pent-up energy and the athletic “moving” nature of Mazda’s vehicles.
The concept has its roots in the carmaker’s long-time sports car tradition, perhaps no better epitomised than by the MX-5. Now in its fourth generation, the world’s best-selling roadster has a uniquely dynamic KODO style. The CX-3 and Mazda2 have also been targets of praise in the small SUV and B segments, respectively.
“This recognition from Red Dot is a testimony to KODO’s flexibility and the artistic freedom it gives us,” says Kevin Rice, Mazda’s European design director. “KODO captures the moment of pent-up energy before an athlete or animal springs into motion. One way to control the visual energy is to ‘compress’ and ‘release’ it as it moves along the body of a car, as we have done with the new MX-5.
The new CX-3 takes a different artistic approach by blending the two main volumes of the car and creating the energy that way. The Mazda2 is different again, demonstrating how KODO helps us give each car its own individual character”.
Initiated in 1955 by the Essen, Germany-based Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, Red Dot is the world’s largest and most prestigious product competition. For the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015, the international jury of designers, professors and journalists evaluated 4,928 submission from 56 countries. Mazda and other winners will receive their awards on 29 June at the Aalto Theatre in Essen.
The products themselves, selected in 31 categories including vehicles, will be on display in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen from 30 June 2015 to 30 July 2016 and online at www.red-dot.de. They have earned the right to bear the “red dot” symbol, an international seal of design excellence.

New Car brand "QOROS" has been named "Best of the Best" in Automotive Brand Contest.

Qoros, the new international car company based in China, has been recognised for outstanding achievements in brand design across no fewer than five categories in the annual Automotive Brand Contest organised by the German Design Council.
Qoros won the ‘Best of the Best’ award in the ‘Corporate Publishing’ category for its ‘Qoros & Design’ magazine. Produced in cooperation with Italian publication, Auto & Design, the premium-feel ‘Qoros & Design’ magazine explains the company’s design evolution and processes one year on from its global debut at the 83rd Geneva Motor Show. The independent panel of judges commented: “The Qoros brand is currently undertaking great efforts to secure a place in the European automotive industry. Using a technical journal for car design as a medium for brand placement represents a highly creative form of corporate publishing.”

The jury also named Qoros as winners in four other competition categories, including two awards for ‘Exterior Volume Brand’, which were bestowed upon the company’s first and second production models – the Qoros 3 Sedan and Qoros 3 Hatch. Qoros also collected awards for ‘Brand Architecture’ for its stand design at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and ‘Brand Design’ for the company’s logo.
Qoros’ Executive Director of Design, Gert Volker Hildebrand attended the awards ceremony in Paris on 2ndOctober. “It’s a great honour to collect these awards on behalf of our international design team,” explains Hildebrand. “We have worked hard to design and develop an original identity for this new international car company, and these awards recognise our success in the early stages of establishing the Qoros brand.”
The Automotive Brand Contest is the only neutral, international design competition for automobile marques and has emerged as an important annual celebration in the industry’s calendar. The annual awards, organised by the German Design Council, honour outstanding product and communication design in the automotive industry, and focus on the integral and consistent use of the brand across all media and products.
The German Design Council was established in 1953 on the initiative of the German Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament) to strengthen design competence within the industry. Its diverse activities pursue a single goal: to communicate the enduring enhancement of brand value through the strategic employment of design.
