The Ferrari J50 ultra limited edition takes the Red Dot Best of the Best Award for 2017

  • The Ferrari J50 takes top honours in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2017
  • The GTC4Lusso, LaFerrari Aperta and 458 MM Speciale receive Red Dot distinctions

For the third year running, Ferrari has taken the Red Dot: Best of the Best award for the maximum expression of design quality and ground-breaking design.
The model to receive the top Red Dot Award in the prestigious annual Product Design competition this year was the Ferrari J50, the strictly limited series of bespoke cars built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ferrari in Japan.
A sophisticated two-seater, mid-rear-engined roadster based on the 488 Spider, the J50 features a radically futuristic design language and was praised by the Red Dot jurors for its innovation.
Designed by the Ferrari Design team under the direction of Flavio Manzoni, just 10 examples of the J50 will be built in the spirit of Ferrari’s fuori serie tradition.
The international jury of design experts also awarded Ferrari Red Dot distinctions for the high design quality of the GTC4Lusso, LaFerrari Aperta and the 458 MM Speciale. The award ceremony held the evening of the 3rd of July at the Aalto Theater in Essen thus focussed attention on the design excellence that characterises Ferrari’s entire model range in the year that the company celebrates its 70th anniversary.
Ferrari’s unique heritage, in fact, is encapsulated in the most extensive and diverse range of sports cars in the automotive sector. The GTC4Lusso is Ferrari’s flagship GT production car, an exclusive interpretation of the four-seater concept, combining extraordinary performance in all driving conditions with sporty elegance and luxurious comfort. The LaFerrari Aperta is a limited-edition special series, an open-top version of the acclaimed LaFerrari supercar which represents the finest expression of the marque’s technical capabilities in both GT and Formula 1 engineering. The 458 MM Speciale instead is one of the latest creations from Ferrari’s special One-Off programme, a bespoke service for clients who desire a truly unique car with innovative, individual styling.

Ferrari takes home a haul of awards at this years Engine Of The YEar ceremony including the overall prize, again.

  • The 3.9-litre twin-turbo takes two categories as well as the overall Engine of the Year Award
  • The F12tdf’s 6.3-litre V12 takes its second consecutive Above 4-litre title
For the second year running, the 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 that powers the 488 GTB, 488 Spider and with a slightly smaller displacement the California T and GTC4Lusso T, has taken the outright International Engine of the Year Award along with the Performance Engine class and the 3-litre to 4-litre displacement category.
Since its introduction in 1999, the International Engine of the Year Award has become one of the industry’s most coveted honours. As well as dominating the Award’s Above 4-litre and Performance Engine categories in the past six years, Ferrari has now taken a record number of wins for any high-performance sports car manufacturer.
This year also saw Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated 6.3-litre V12 engine, that powers the F12berlinetta and F12tdf, receive the Above 4-litre award for the second year consecutively, and for the third time after the distinction awarded in 2013. This result for the V12 is even more significant this year, as it is this power unit that hailed the start of the glorious Prancing Horse story 70 years ago in 1947.
A concentration of uncompromising engineering solutions, Ferrari’s return to twin-turbo technology for the V8 range has set a new benchmark for turbo-charged engines. Zero turbo lag and a progressive delivery of power and torque throughout the rev range maintain unprecedented levels of driver involvement.
According to Tony Robinson, founder of the International Engine of the Year Awards, “This is only the second time in the history of the IEOTYA that such a powerful performance engine has taken the overall honours two years consecutively  and won the most coveted, outright IEOTYA title. The Ferrari V8 is all about amazing power delivery, precision, driveability and a wonderful soundtrack, too.  One day soon it'll be a classic in its own right; indeed I think it is already!”

More than 40 journalists attended the event and drove more than 25 vehicles from various manufacturers. Journalists voted for their favorite vehicles after driving scenic routes in Key Biscayne, Florida.
Crafted by Alfa Romeo artisans at the Cassino plant in Italy, the all-new 2017 Giulia is a testament to Alfa Romeo’s perfect balance of engineering and emotion, creating a premium sports sedan for driving enthusiasts that stands out in the segment, and is luxurious and comfortable on the inside.
Built around the driver, Alfa Romeo Giulia designers focused on simplistic elegance, with an emphasis on incorporating the essential elements for performance. The designers did this while taking a top-down strategy – starting with the halo high-performance 505-hp 2.9L twin-turbo V6 Quadrifoglio model – ensuring top performance, impeccable handling, and luxurious design and trickling that technology and craft down throughout the Giulia line-up today.
Inside, Giulia’s high level of craftsmanship starts with an asymmetric-styled instrument panel, featuring a driver-focused cockpit crafted with an array of available leathers with accent stitching all featuring an embossed Alfa Romeo logo in the headrest, plus trim available in genuine aluminum, wood or carbon fiber – all for a customized look that could only be crafted in Italy. Behind the steering wheel, the Giulia features a full-color 7-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) instrument cluster straddled by two large white-on-black face analog gauges.
At the center of the interior, the brand’s all-new widescreen Information and Entertainment system is available in 6.5 inches or 8.8 inches and offers an intuitive, yet sophisticated series of features all elegantly “hidden” in the instrument panel. Below, in the center console, the rotary controller is ergonomically located and features a simple operation of the entertainment system. Last, the Alfa DNA drive mode selector (featuring three standard drive modes: Dynamic, Natural and Advanced Efficiency) is adjacent to the automatic shifter, enabling the driver to easily adjust the Alfa Romeo Giulia’s driving behavior.
In addition to the expansive list of standard features in the all-new Giulia, Giulia Ti adds even more luxury and convenience offerings, including standard 18-inch wheels, genuine wood interior accents, front park sensors, an 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment display along with heated steering wheel and heated front seats.
The Giulia and Giulia Ti also offer drivers key packages, providing a unique collection of available features that further accentuate the bold Alfa Romeo characteristics:

In addition, the exterior offers a unique 18-inch 10-spoke luxury wheel.
  • Ti Performance Package adds an adaptive performance suspension, mechanical limited slip differential and steering column-mounted aluminum paddle shifters to any Giulia Ti
Completing the line-up is the Giulia Quadrifoglio featuring an all-aluminum direct-injection 2.9-liter twin-turbo intercooled V-6 engine, delivering a best-in-class 505 horsepower, earning it the title of Alfa Romeo’s most powerful Alfa Romeo production car ever, achieving a record-setting time at the time at the Nürburgring of 7:32, making the Giulia the fastest four-door production sedan in the world, as well as featuring class-leading 0-60 miles per hour acceleration of 3.8 seconds.
Though it is not just performance that embodies the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the model also features an impressive list of features above the Giulia Ti. The exterior stands apart with unique front fascia featuring industry’s first carbon fiber active aero front splitter, rear fascia with quad exhaust and a rear diffuser, carbon fiber accents including rear spoiler, side rocker panels, roof and hood, all finished off by four available 19-inch wheel designs and signature colored calipers.
The interior adds sporty refinement and safety with the addition of sport seats adorned with high-performance leather and Alcantara, a leather-wrapped dash and doors with accent stitching, 3-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel featuring a performance red push button start, carbon-fiber interior trim, aluminum sport pedal and footrest, 8.8-inch widescreen with additional 3D Navigation blind-spot monitoring with rear cross path detection, torque vectoring differential, adaptive suspension, and Alfa’s DNA Pro Drive Mode System featuring 4 Drive modes – with addition of exclusive RACE mode.

MOTOR TREND has recognized the Chevrolet Bolt EV — the all-new affordable electric vehicle offering an EPA-estimated 238 miles of range on a full charge — as its 2017 Car of the Year®.
The editors based their selection on the Bolt EV’s performance in six evaluation categories: advancement in design, engineering excellence, efficiency, safety, value and performance of intended function.

“Chevrolet is the fastest-growing full-line retail brand in the industry thanks to an exceptional vehicle lineup, which includes ground-breaking products like the Bolt EV,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and Global Chevrolet brand chief. “Being recognized once again as MOTOR TREND Car of the Year is a great honour for the entire Chevrolet team.”
It is the fourth MOTOR TREND award for Chevrolet in three years, with the Camaro recognized as the 2016 Car of the Year and Colorado named the 2015 and 2016 Truck of the Year.

USA - Today, the Mercedes-Benz GLC won Motor Trend's 2017 SUV of the Year Award.

"The GLK, our original midsize SUV, was one of the most popular models in our SUV lineup. The GLC, our second-generation midsize SUV, has built on the sales success of the GLK while taking a huge leap forward in terms of safety, technology and design," said Bernie Glaser, General Manager of Product Management, MBUSA.

"Winning Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award is a testament to all the hard work that designers, engineers and product management have put into the new GLC; congrats to the whole Mercedes-Benz team."
On a technical level, the Mercedes GLC sets new benchmarks for ride, handling, safety technology and comfort and offers off-road capabilities.
Though larger than the GLK, the GLC is also lighter. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is teamed with a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission improved performance and efficiency.
The GLC offers 4MATIC all-wheel drive for outstanding agility and traction on a variety of road surfaces.
The GLC's longer wheelbase and vehicle length result in substantially more interior space for occupants and luggage. The GLC's dashboard and center console showcase flowing lines and a large, one-piece panel that elegantly sweeps from the center air vents to the armrest.
These clear-cut lines create a feeling of open space and establish a purist, modern vibe. The optional large panoramic glass roof further enhances the light and airy feel inside.

TMW - The European Car of the Year is the Astra, and we test it, to see what the fuss is all about, and it is very very good.

When a car has been awarded the European Car of the Year Award, you have some preconceived idea's of what the car is like, and i was in that class, my parents had owned a previous model Astra, a Mark III model mind you, but they loved it, and though it was the best car they had owned, until they bought their latest car, the Vauxhall Mokka SE.

But the car here is another leap ahead, even of the Mokka and previous gen Astra, and that's why it won the best award around, before you even get in the car you are in awe of its looks, the lines flow from front to back and that kink between boot and rear door makes the back end stand out as something different, the lights are designed to be a part of the design and not just to fit in with a design, which a lot of cars tend to do these days.
The click of the key fob unlocks the doors and the sound is a muffled sturdy clunk, it sounds like it is from a more premium brand, the doors to open and shut with a solid thud, rather than a clang, and again you expect that from a more premium brand, once inside, the ergonomics of the switchgear, buttons and dials are all near and handy, no stretching here to use anything, and long gone are the days when Vauxhall had dozens of buttons, it's now clear and clean, where the vast majority of operations are now completed through the intelligent and easy to use touchscreen system.

Getting comfortable is easy with plenty of directional options for seats and steering wheel, so even the biggest or smallest can get comfortable quickly, once the car has started you are greeted with a near silent tick over once the car has warmed up, and the day I had the Astra, just happened to be the hottest day of the year, so getting the engine to optimum operating temperature was very quickly achieved, and setting the sat nav for somewhere to go to take some pictures of the car was also very easy to do, it is one of the simplest Sat Navs I have come across so far.

The car, although a 1.4 litre was quick to pull away and kept up with fast moving traffic very easily, and all without any trouble or need to knock the gearbox up and down to maintain it's speed, whether you were at 30 or 70mph, the car was very quiet with little road noise intrusion, you do get s little wind noise around the over sized wing mirrors, but that seems to be the case with nearly all cars these days.

The car that I had for test was the , I am glad they don't put all that on the back of cars these days, there wouldn't be enough room, but those three letters SRi mean you are getting something a little special and a little more sporty than the normal model, and it does not fail to deliver, and with the quick get away you get a good set of brakes to slow you down to avoid getting into any trouble, the lightness of the power steering can occasionally feel a little vague, if turning whilst pulling away, but once on the go, you get a lot of feedback from the wheel, and there is little to no under or over steer, there is even unnoticeable torque steer too, which gives the car a stable steady feel.

The interior of the car is quite sombre with lots of black, but again, this is the norm these days, however what you don't get with most cars is lots of soft touch plastics, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear stick gaiter, nice to feel handles, Switches and buttons, the interior really is a great place to be, you will feel at home very quickly here, and again that's a huge plus point and another reason why this car won the top European prize, and many others too, all well deserved.

Space in the back is quite good too, but longer journeys might be a little off putting for those that have to sit in black everything, seats are supportive, and leg room too is quite good, being just shy of six feet myself, I put the front seat where i need it and i still managed to get in the back, and have room to be comfortable.

Boot space is great, plenty of that, and with the seats down you will be forgiven that you're
not in the estate version, as it seems so big, the boot door does open quite a high, and short people might have an issue reaching it, but again, this is the norm these days, and to be honest, who has not had a chuckle at someone trying to reach the tailgate to shut and failing, or is that just me.

Would I have one, Yes I would if I were in this market for a car, however, I prefer the more upright style car, so the Mokka or Meriva/Zafira would be my cup of tea, but it is a  very close call, the car is just so good, that anyone that does not consider it when they are in the market for a car in this class, must be very short sighted, after all, they don't just give away European Car Of The Year Awards to every car company, and this is really well deserved.
