Kia Motors Europe has posted record Q3 sales across Europe, with 95,102 units sold from July to September this year. According to the latest data from ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association), Kia’s third quarter sales figures represent year-on-year growth of 9.7% (up from 86,718 for the same period in 2014).

So far in 2015, Kia is enjoying its best ever year in terms of sales across Europe, with 295,140 units sold so far this year – an increase of 8.3% compared to the 272,600 units sold from January to September 2014. Kia Motors Europe had already achieved sales of more than 200,000 in the first half of 2015 for the first time in the company’s history.
Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Kia Motors Europe, commented: “It’s very satisfying to see our European sales continue to grow in line with our plan for sustainable growth. Kia’s promise to offer uncompromising quality, great design and the highest levels of customer care are clearly striking a chord with buyers across the continent, and we remain on course for record full-year sales.”
The United Kingdom remains the largest of Kia’s markets in Europe, with 21,960 units sold in Q3, representing over 23% sales contribution to Europe’s figures. The UK is followed by Germany (14,488 units) and Spain (9,771 units).
Sales growth for best-selling Kia Sportage and cee’d
The Kia Sportage – the brand’s European best-seller – continues to achieve strong sales growth, enjoying one of its best ever quarters in the model’s history. In its fourth full-year of production, 25,308 Sportage models were sold across Europe from July to September, a 5.2% increase, bringing total year-to-date sales to 81,310.
Kia’s second best-selling product, the cee’d model family, also experienced sales growth through the third quarter, having recently been upgraded with a revised, more modern interior and exterior look, and a range of efficient new powertrain options. In September, following the introduction of the new model, year-on-year cee’d sales grew by 3.3% during the month, to 7,227 units. 58,761 cee’d models have been registered across Europe so far this year.
Manufactured exclusively for Kia Motors Europe at the company’s state-of-the-art production facility in Žilina, Slovakia, the cee’d achieved a major milestone earlier in 2015, with the 1,000,000th cee’d manufactured since its introduction nine years ago.
B-segment models drive European sales growth
The hard-fought B-segment has played a major role in Kia’s sales growth over the last quarter, with rising sales of the recently-upgraded Rio hatchback and Venga compact MPV. Sales of the Rio rose by 10.8% compared to the same period last year (16,452 units in Q3, 49,511 year-to-date). The Kia Venga also saw year-on-year sales growth, with 6,884 units sold in Q3 representing a 9.0% growth compared to Q3 2014
Every model in Kia’s European line-up is sold with the brand’s unique 7-Year, 100,000 mile warranty.

DS Formula E racing team to try to continue season two the way it finished season one.

DS Virgin Racing will take to the streets of Beijing next weekend with a new driver line-up, new partners, a new powertrain and plenty of momentum.
The FIA Formula E Championship returns for a second season in Beijing on 24 October and the DS Virgin Racing team will be looking to continue where they left off at the end of season one.
Back in June, home favourite Sam Bird stormed to a win in the final round in London. The British driver will be looking to build on a promising first season – which also saw him pick up a win in Malaysia – alongside new recruit, Frenchman Jean-Éric Vergne.

With the arrival of the DS brand, the race car also has a new look for season two. Combining the DS and Virgin brand identities, the new design represents a dynamic integration of both the DS Automobiles and Virgin colour schemes, and maintains the distinctive red and chrome features from season one. The DS brand logo now appears proudly on each side of the car on a black background, alongside fellow partner Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The battery cover remains purple as in season one.
It is not just the outside of the car that is different. Changes to the technical regulations have enabled teams, including DS Virgin Racing, to develop their own electric powertrains for season two. The team has chosen to re-design its powertrain significantly in order to increase efficiency – and in order to account for the increase in race power allowed in season two, which rises from 150kW to 170kW. This package was tested extensively in the pre-season and proved to be reliable, but it is difficult to predict how it will stand up versus the competition until all of the teams hit the streets in Beijing.
Additional changes to Fanboost, meanwhile, will give fans the chance to vote for Sam and Jean-Éric until six minutes into the race, providing a power boost of 100kJ of additional energy that can be used during the rest of the race.
Speaking ahead of the season opener, Sam Bird said; “To finish last season the way we did in London was really special, so I’m hoping that we can build on that and come into the new season with the same impetus.   It was a great feeling to get on the podium in Beijing last year and I’ll be looking to go one, or hopefully two better this time around!”
Jean-Éric Vergne said; “I’m very excited to have joined DS Virgin Racing and I’m looking forward to getting things off to a positive start in Beijing. I didn’t race here last year so it will be interesting to get out on the track and experience another unique street circuit.”
Alex Tai, DS Virgin Racing Team Principal, said; “It is unbelievable how quickly a year goes by. This time last year, we entered into the relatively unknown world of electric racing, during the first season we learned a great deal and have developed strongly as a race team. I believe we have brought great talent into the team both on and off the track and adding this to the experience learned in the first year I feel confident we will deliver a strong performance in the coming season starting right here in Beijing.
Yves Bonnefont, CEO of the DS Brand, said; “Following the announcement of our new partnership with Virgin Racing in June, it has been an exciting few months for the DS brand working towards our first race in Beijing. Having recently marked our 60th anniversary, it would be fantastic to celebrate this special landmark with a race to remember, particularly in China which is a very important market for us.”

Volvo to have every model within it's range as part of a new range of Plug In Hybrids and a full Hybrid by 2019.

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced one of the automotive industry’s most comprehensive electrification strategies in which plug-in hybrids will be introduced across its entire range. It will develop an entirely new range of electrified smaller cars and build a fully electric car for sale by 2019.
As part of this new strategy, the Swedish car company said it expects electrified vehicles to account for up to 10 per cent of total car sales in the medium term.

The first element of the new electrification strategy involves the introduction of plug-in hybrid versions of its 90 series and 60 series larger cars, based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. This process has already begun with the launch of the T8 Twin Engine All-Wheel Drive plug-in hybrid version of its new XC90 SUV and will continue with plug-in hybrid versions of the new S90 premium sedan and other forthcoming models.
Volvo Cars will also broaden the range of plug-in hybrid cars it offers with the introduction of a new front-wheel drive Twin Engine variant.
The Swedish car maker will further deepen its product offering with the introduction of an entirely new range of smaller 40 series cars based on its newly-developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which, like SPA, has been designed from the outset for electrification. This makes Volvo Car Group one of very few car makers in the world with two brand new vehicle architectures designed to support both plug-in and pure electric powertrain configurations.
Lastly, Volvo Cars has confirmed that it will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019. Further details of this planned model will be released at a later date.
Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, said: “We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream. We are confident that in two years’ time, 10 per cent of Volvo’s global sales will be electrified cars.”
Volvo Cars believes that plug-in hybrid cars offer customers the best combination of efficiency, range and convenience.
For example, Volvo Cars’ XC90 T8 Twin Engine is one of the cleanest and most powerful 7-seater SUV on the market, delivering over 407 horsepower equivalent and just 49 g/km CO2, plus a pure electric range of 43 km, an industry leading 2.1 l/100 km in fuel economy and reaching 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.
This combination of power, efficiency and environmental friendliness will be the hall marks of all of Volvo Cars’ forthcoming electrified models.
“We have learned a lot about how people use cars with electrification thanks to our current product offer,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President for Research and Development. “Our research has shown that people are driving our Twin Engine cars in electric mode around 50 per cent of the time, meaning our plug-in hybrids already offer a real alternative to conventional powertrain systems.”
“With around 40 years of experience in the field of electrification, Volvo Cars has learned a lot about battery management along the way, delivering the best range per kilowatt hour in the industry. We have come to a point where the cost versus benefit calculation for electrification is now almost positive. Battery technology has improved, costs are going down, and public acceptance of electrification is no longer a question,” Dr Mertens added.

Volvo cars new global compact car range to be built on innovative flexible architecture.

Volvo Cars is to extend its range of compact cars into new segments on its highly-innovative Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), a smaller but equally advanced version of Volvo’s acclaimed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). The company’s first car on CMA is expected to be launched in 2017.
CMA’s introduction in 2017 means that all future Volvo cars will be built on just two fully scalable and wholly modular vehicle architectures.

The simultaneous development of SPA and CMA has formed the cornerstone of Volvo’s product renewal and growth strategy, which involves the replacement of every single car in its line-up in the next four years and an annual sales volume of up 800,000 cars. This process started with the launch of the XC90 and will continue shortly with the launch of the new S90 premium sedan.

CMA allows Volvo Cars to offer customers of compact cars the same type of premium engineering benefits as owners of its larger cars built on SPA. Shared technology between SPA and CMA will include powertrains (both conventional and new plug-in hybrid variants) and the infotainment, climate and data network and safety systems taking the Swedish car maker ever closer to its vision of no deaths or injuries in its new cars by 2020.

“The flexibility of CMA liberates Volvo’s engineers and designers, allowing them to devise and introduce a wide range of new and alluring features whilst at the same time improving drivability, offering world-class safety features and connected car technologies,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.

CMA will also change the way Volvo Cars builds its products in the future by allowing a wide range of cars, powertrains, electrical systems and technologies of varying complexity to be fitted on the same architecture, generating significant economies of scale and a more streamlined manufacturing process.
Volvo Cars’ CMA has been designed from the outset to embrace electrification – offering a new Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant designed especially for the new architecture.
“We are in a terrific position with CMA. We have developed this new architecture as a plug and play component. This means that on Volvo’s next generation of compact cars you will benefit from the advanced technologies available on our XC90 today,”
said Dr Mertens.

Volvo Cars expects to significantly increase its global volumes with the coming range of CMA-based cars, which will have a truly global footprint and take the Swedish brand into exciting new product segments.
“CMA is a key part of the continued growth strategy of the Volvo Cars brand,” said Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Sales Marketing and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group. “Apart from offering all the benefits and features of a larger premium car, such as the industry-leading safety, powertrain and infotainment technologies, CMA will deliver a true and distinctive Volvo driving and ownership experience setting it apart from others in this growing premium segment.”
