Purpose

I will try my best to provide detailed info on various cars and what is like to live with them, I have already produced a few for Jaguar-car-forums, I will do my best to be unbiased, but it will be hard for some cars. I will re-produce press releases and copy from other motoring news.

TMW - The New Bentley Coupe and the Grand Mulsanne, which if either will be produced? or maybe both !

The all new Bentley that made it's debut last year was a tentative preview of what possibly could emerge after the launch of the Bentayga, well, now that car has been launched and we wonder with bated breath what Bentley has up it's sleeve for the next all new model.
The EXP 10 Speed 6 Concept was slightly criticised for being too "Aston" like, but in my opinion that is not a problem, Aston makes some of the most beautiful cars in the world, so for Bentley to have a few design cues that mimic, loosely, the Aston, this can only be seen as a positive point.

CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer has stated "We are readying the concept for decision" and that "It would come as a two-door coupe and a roadster as well, and would be launched after the next continental", the new Conti is pencilled in for a launch of 2017, so the new Bentley could make a preview slightly after that launch, and on sale late 2018.
However, Bentley is in a quandary, they have Four models currently, The Continental, The Flying Spur, The Bentayga and Mulsanne, so space is slightly limited at the Crewe facility, and yet they have two models that are fighting it out between themselves for full scale production, the EXP and the Mulsanne based convertible, or the Grand Convertible as it is currently being named.
The Mulsanne will gain a convertible on it's next generation but thats not for upwards of five years, so, would it be worth the investment to have it now, against the new coupe that would slot below the Continental, and be a rather large seller, and with it a big income earner, no brainer, or is it !
Mulliner is capable of building the Grand Convertible, freeing up space at Crewe, they could build 20-30 units at a price that would make even Roman Abramovich wince, but it would be so rare and so wanted by those with the wedge to afford it, that it would make financial sense, and the profits from this car could go someway to productionise the new car, so, a no brainer again, maybe !

The only downpoint to the Mulsanne is that the old beast of an engine that can trace it's lieage back to the 1950's will no longer be usable, and will be replaced by the W12 unit, which Bentley is now in sole control of, and will build engines for all the VW Group that will require this stonking power plant, but the old girl will not be the same, it's like giving your nan a new heart, you know she is just as good, if not better, but she is not the same, this engine, like the original Mini and the Defender are icons of motoring past that lived way past their sell by date, but we clung on to them until the last possible second, and for Bentley the time is running out.

UK SALES YEAR END - Mazda has recorded it's 3rd year of successive growth, with new models this will continue.

  • Mazda UK has recorded its third successive year of sales growth.
  • 2015 saw Mazda UK achieve a year-on-year sales increase of 20.4 per cent.
  • Mazda’s fully SKYACTIV range is one of the youngest model-line ups in the industry.
Mazda UK recorded its third successive year of dramatic sales growth in 2015, ending the year 20.4 per cent up over 2014 - selling more than 45,500 cars. Mazda’s growth is well ahead of the UK market, which was up 6.3 per cent at 2.63m in 2015. This follows a successful 2014, in which Mazda’s sales grew 21 per cent over 2013, while that year sales had grown by more than 19 per cent over 2012.

After a year that saw the launch of the all-new Mazda2, the all-new Mazda CX-3 and the debut of the latest version of Mazda’s iconic MX-5 sports car, which was named 2016 What Car? Convertible of the Year, Mazda UK Sales Director Peter Allibon is looking forward to another strong year of sales performance.
“All our factories are working at 100 per cent capacity which is fantastic,” explained Mazda UK sales director Peter Allibon, adding, “so it’s unlikely that there will be a fourth year of double-digit sales increases, but there are still opportunities for UK growth.”
Allibon is forecasting that Mazda’s sales will grow seven per cent in 2016 while the UK market is expected to be flat.
“This year is going to be one of consolidation with modest levels of growth,” he said. “We will have a full year of all-new Mazda2 sales and, of course, the all-new Mazda MX-5 was only launched late last summer so we will have a whole summer of MX-5 sales to look forward to,” said Allibon.
Mazda3, launched just two years ago in January 2014 and it’s now the most established car in Mazda’s line-up of sixth-generation models – it was also the best-seller in 2015 with sales up 37.4 per cent at 12,600.
“Having all six of our sixth generation cars in the showroom at the same time – something we’ve been working towards since 2011 – is great for our dealers and our customers,” said Allibon. It also reinforces Mazda’s position as the franchise of choice for dealer groups looking to expand their portfolio.
“Our plan for 2016 is to focus on getting the quality aspect of everything we do right. The expectations of our customers – many of whom have come to Mazda from premium brands – are different now and we need to be able to positively surprise them with exceptional service at every touch point.”
In 2015 not only did Mazda UK launch three all-new models and two major facelifts, it was the central feature marque at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, supported its dealer network upgrade their showroom facilities and moved its UK headquarters to a building that reflects Mazda’s status as one of the most successful brands over the last three years.
“I believe the Mazda brand and our current product range gives us the capacity to grow beyond 50,000 annual sales, but our dealer network is profitable at that level so if we do expand beyond this point we have to look at the size of our network and our own infrastructure to support those extra sales, while at the same time ensuring we continue to deliver the desired customer experience,” said Allibon.
The entire Mazda range now features SKYACTIV technology and eye-catching KODO: Soul of Motion design and with the launch of the all-new Mazda MX-5 Sport Recaro Limited Edition and the addition of the 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel engine to the Mazda3 range, the early months of 2016 see Mazda continue to expand its award-winning model line-up.

Mazda sales surge in Q1, making a huge 26% improvement on 2013.

  • Unconventional Japanese automaker hikes first quarter turnover by 26 per cent
  • New-generation Mazdas fuel growth that easily outpaces most European markets
Mazda continued its run during the first quarter as one of Europe’s fastest-growing carmakers. At 50,221 units, new registrations of Mazda models were up by more than 10,000 between January and March, or 26.3 per cent versus the same period in 2013. It was the largest gain of any volume automaking group in Europe, propelling Mazda’s market share to 1.5 per cent from 1.3 per cent one year ago*.
This came in spite of a resurgence in passenger car sales across Europe, where the overall market posted a year-on-year rise of 8.1 per cent. In fact, Mazda outpaced the individual markets in virtually every single country during the quarter. In percentage terms, Portugal recorded the biggest advance for the company at 141 per cent. Poland was next (up 62 per cent), followed by Sweden (+60 per cent), Spain(+47 per cent), Denmark and Ireland (both +44 per cent), Austria (+42 per cent), the UK (+38 per cent), and Germany (+24 per cent). Mazda also posted double-digit gains in Finland, France and Slovenia**.

Behind the growth: Mazda’s convention-defying new generation of cars, all of which feature the company’s revolutionary SKYACTIV Technology and stunning KODO designs. Lightweight, fuel efficient, safe and exceptionally fun to drive, but without compromising on Mazda’s characteristic reliability and class-leading ownership costs and resale values, the popularity of these highly acclaimed vehicles has helped drive the carmaker back to sustainable profitability.
The company completed the European rollout of the all-new Mazda3, its latest model, during the first three months of the year. The new compact has been an unequivocal success, most notably in Sweden – where first-quarter sales of Mazda’s compact increased by a factor of five – as well as in Denmark, Austria and Germany. The other two new-generation models have been very successful, too: Turnover of the Mazda CX-5 tripled in Denmark during the quarter and doubled in Ireland. In fact, demand for the compact SUV, as measured by customer orders in Europe, remains just as strong as it was at the model’s launch two years ago. And orders for the Mazda6, which has also been selling well, continue to grow by the month. Mazda plans to keep the momentum going with an aggressive launch programme of additional new models.

“We grew consistently last year in a contracting market, and now that car sales in Europe have picked up, we’re still outperforming the market by a wide margin across diverse geographies,” says Mazda Motor Europe COO Philip Waring. “Each successive positive quarter further underscores the sustainability, depth and vision of our approach, which is to supply unconventional and uncompromising cars that are within reach of a large share of the population.”

Mazda celebrates historic win at GANAEC

Over the past four decades, Mazda has scored hundreds of race wins at tracks across the county, and around the world.  But until today, Mazda did not have a win at what is perhaps the most famous racetrack in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  That box has now been checked.  In the Grand-Am Brickyard Grand Prix, the #70 SpeedSource Castrol Edge Mazda6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel scored the GX class win.

The win was the fifth in a row for the all-new Mazda6, and moves it ahead of Porsche after eight of 12 races in the GX manufacturers championship race.  As has been the case all year long, it was a three car battle between Mazda and Porsche, with both brands leading at times.  Eventual winner Sylvain Tremblay took the lead with 47 laps remaining in the three hour race, and was never headed.

The Indy race also was the third and final round of the Grand-Am North America Endurance Championship, the first two rounds having been the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Sahlen’s Six Hour at Watkins Glen.  The SpeedSource Mazda won the team championship for the GX class.

This was only the second year that sports cars have been a featured race at the track most noted for the famed Indianapolis 500.  The track has had wide variety of powertrain configurations and technologies compete, but never before had a diesel engine won at Indy.  The most recent diesel to compete was the Cummins Engine Special, which won the pole for the Indy 500 in 1952.

The SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine in the all-new Mazda6 is a true production-based engine.  The engine is 51 percent stock by parts count, and 63 percent stock by weight.  Mazda chose this path as it is the most honest way to demonstrate the quality, durability, and reliability of Mazda cars.

Quotes:

John Doonan, Motorsports Director, Mazda North American Operations: “We made  history today, both for Mazda and for SKYACTIV Clean Diesel Technology.  While this is our fifth win of the season, and fifth in a row, it is by far the biggest win to date.  To win at Indy is every racer’s dream, and that dream came true for Mazda  here today.  So many people at Mazda in the U.S. and Japan, working hand-in-hand with the amazing SpeedSource team, have never stopped making progress in this program.  We also aregrateful for our partners at Castrol, ModSpace and VISIT FLORIDA, all of whom have  contributed to our success.”

Sylvain Tremblay, Owner/Driver/Engineer, SpeedSource Engineering: “We were just trying to stay out of the way of the DP cars, and ended up on the marbles and almost kissed the concrete, but ended up kissing the bricks.  It was not an easy day, but the team remained focused and we came through for the win.  To score the first ever win for a diesel at Indy, in our first year with the program, speaks volumes for Mazda and our team.”

Tom Long, Co-Driver #70 Mazda6: "The race with our SKYACTIV-D Mazda6 was certainly exciting, and the SpeedSource team worked so hard to persevere. It's an incredible experience to share this first victory at Indy with Mazda and the entire team. The tradition of 'kissing the bricks' will be a memory I will never forget."

TMW - MG3, At last a car to be proud of.

When MG UK re-entered the UK market with the MGTf we knew all about that car, yes it had a few alterations here and there, but was essentially the same car that MG-Rover built up until 2005 when all hell broke loose and the Longbridge plant finally closed its doors.

Then came the MG6, a mid sized saloon and hatch with a single petrol engine choice and three trim levels at a price most thought to be a bit to optimistic, and the lack of sales has shown this, a vast number of offers every few months does little to tempt the UK buyer to the brand, and why, well MG seems to have little faith in this car, they don't want anyone to know about it.

The complete lack of advertising is a bone of contention on a number of websites, namely MG-Rover.org and AROnline, with some members on both sites becoming obsessively anti Chinese, and no amount of asking gets us any response as to why they don't, massive success in the BTCC should have most companies ad men drooling at the prospect of advertising the brand or cars, but not MG UK.

We then see an MGB styled SUV concept, which i liked and was not like by a lot of people, then the Zero concept and MG5 concept, both the Zero (MG3) and MG5 concept cars made it to the production lines but heavily watered down from what both were fantastic designs, it was then decided the MG5 would not come to the UK and the MG3 would, and it is this car that we have here.

I, along with many have been looking forward to this car, because this car has got to succeed in a way no other car before it has, if this car fails to sell, like the MG6, then I fear it might be game over for MG in the UK, but they have priced it right, £8,000 for the basic car, £10,000  for the mid range and £12,000 for the leather clad top of the range car.

The interior of the MG3 looks spartan, but that has a charm about it, as so many cars these days have dozens of buttons it looks stupid, the nice to the touch steering wheel and short throw gear stick looks like it might be a decent car to throw about for those that want a ZR replacement, the seats are very supportive and comfortable, however the awful shiny fabric that is the center part of the seats does hark back to the 1980's.

With the front seat in a position I would be happy with, a 6 foot person got in the back seat and was comfortable with room to move their legs, the doors shut with no quite a thunk, but they sound solid enough for a car in this market, the style of the audio controls and controls on the steering wheel all have a matching shape and design, and that is good, as it is a familiar look, for those with ipods etc.

The car here had electric windows all round, the rears will apparently be manual on the basic car, but then that's no hardship, the rear doors open wide, a lot wider that a lot of the opposition, nearly to 90 degree so access for kids etc will be good, I also like the sport touches, like the side skirts and rear spoiler, it gives a more sporty look to the car, however with no details about the 1.5 litre engine, whether it is sporty to drive or not wont become apparent until later in the year.

The only issues I had with the car is the high lip to the boot and drop the other side, people who struggle with these things will find that an issue, and the lack of engine options and the ridiculous decision not to bring an auto to any of the MG range "anytime soon" is laughable in these days of so many engine/gearbox options.

If MG had an auto in the 6, there would be one on my drive right now, no hesitation, if they had one in the 3 and not the 6, there would be a 3 on my drive come September, so the lack of these choices is costing them money and customers, but I digress, here are the pictures, enjoy.

UPDATE 16/08/2013

MG UK have announced that teh new MG3 will have a price point where the top of teh range will be £9,999, and a start price of £8,399, great news, lots of options, some dreadful and some ok, some really nice colours and decent looking alloys, so what will they fail on, probably the advertising, there seems to be little news on whether there will be any TV advertising, or a major press launch, as long as they just do not rely on Facebook and Twitter to sell these cars then teh outlook is good.

Tow car Awards 5) Mazda wins with new '6', best petrol two car

  • Sixth award this year for all-new Mazda6
  • All-new Mazda6 praised for being spacious and affordable
  • Range of accessories available from Mazda to make holiday travel easier

The all-new Mazda6 claimed its sixth award this year after it was named as the ‘Best Petrol Tow Car’ at the Tow Car Awards 2013, held at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire last night (13 June).  The Mazda6 2.0-litre 165ps Sport Saloon petrol model won the title after rigorous testing against rivals from Ford, Peugeot and Vauxhall and was praised for its proven capability as a tow car in terms of its practicality, power and value for money.

Each of the shortlisted candidates were put through a series of towing tests at the MIRA proving ground in the Midlands, including 30-60mph acceleration, 30-0mph braking, a hill start and an emergency lane-change test.

Recognising the all-new Mazda6 as the winner, David Motton, Tow Car Editor at Practical Caravan and award judge, said: “If you need proof that diesel power isn’t a must for a tow car, the Mazda6 2.0-litre provides it.  In the lane-change test the Mazda6 felt firmly in charge, even on faster runs.  Inside, there’s plenty of space for those in the front and lots of legroom in the back.  Our favourite petrol tow car is stable and good value.”

The panel of judges also included Deputy Road Test Editor of What Car? and the technical department at the Camping and Caravanning Club.  The Tow Car Awards is a joint venture between both outlets as well as Practical Caravan magazine.

To assess the shortlisted cars, each model is put through the same tests to identify their towing abilities as well as to evaluate value for money and ease to live with for everyday driving.  Cars are also judged on how easily extension mirrors can be fitted, whether the spare wheel provision is suitable for towing, as well as safety and boot space.

According to Motton, practicality judges found that the all-new Mazda6: “swallowed a typical family’s holiday luggage with space to spare.”

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK, commented: “This latest accolade is a fantastic addition to the Mazda6’s expanding haul of awards and just goes to show the different areas where this car excels.  The award also highlights the affordability which the Mazda6 presents, particularly for families considering a car which has the appeal of everyday driving combined with the capability and practicality of towing a caravan during the holiday season.”

There are a number of accessories available from Mazda to make holiday travel easy and stress-free.  Additional features include a bicycle carrier and attachment, roof box, roof rack, snow board/ ski attachment and tow bar including tow accessories.

The all-new Mazda6 is available with a choice of 36 models across the two bodystyles, six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and six trim levels (SE, SE Nav, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav).  Priced from £19,595 to £28,045 (on the road).  The 150ps 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D Saloon diesel has class-leading CO2 emissions of just 108g/km and combined fuel consumption of 67.3mpg. Benefit in Kind tax for a 40 percent tax payer is £133 a month (Sport trim).

MG supports Women's cycling with a bonus race

MG’s crack women’s cycling team will be fighting it out in a bonus race for fans of Britain’s biggest growing sport.

Changes to the 2013 racing calendar mean that the MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling team women will now be racing in Redditch on June 4 which coincides with one of the biggest events in the men’s racing schedule. So Midlands fans will get top see both squads in action.

MG Maxifuel team principal, Rod Freeman, said: “The women’s race in the top Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series had to be re-arranged and moved to Redditch, but it’s a real bonus for us and Midland fans.

“One of the top men’s races is on the same night so the MG Maxifuel team will be out in force. With these being the closest races to the MG factory in Birmingham we expect to get lots of local support.”

The MG Maxifuel Pro Cycling team is currently third in the British Racing Road & Track rankings in which several hundred of Britain’s top teams are listed.

This weekend the men take on one of the toughest races in the British Cycling Premier championships in Lincoln. More than 160 of the UK’s top riders, including some of the 2012 British Olympic team, will tackle the 102 mile University of Lincoln Grand Prix on Sunday.

They will fight it out over 13 laps of a course that takes the riders through the heart of Lincoln’s tourist area including the cathedral and castle.

The sting in the tale of the Lincoln event is the 1in 6 Michaelgate Hill in the city centre. Apart from the sheer steepness of the incline, the roadway is also cobbled and can be treacherous in the wet.

But the MG Maxifuel team, which includes two MG6 GT support cars, is confident it will emerge with further points to add to this season’s tally.

TMW - Renault a potted history

This is just a very brief and concise history of Renault, ready for "The Motoring World's" exclusive look at the new Captur.

In 1899 there was to be a company launched that would, over the following 114 years, prove to be an automotive icon, Louis Renault and his two brothers launched Renault to the world with a Renault Voiturette 1CV car, which was sold to a family friend, from there the company grew, and prospered, it successfully saw of World War one, and in the years between that and the second world war the company continued a growth that would only be curtailed by the invasion of France by the Nazi's in 1940, Louis was ordered by the Germans to make tanks for the occupiers, but refused, instead building trucks.

A number of raids by both the British and American forces damaged the factory enough to slow production by a vast amount, after the war was over, Louis was arrested for collaboration and was due to stand trial in 1944, however he passed away under mysterious circumstances before this trial could begin,  while he was awaiting the trail, General Charles De Gaulle,  took the company into government hands and placed an administrator to run the company.

During the war period Louis was developing a new car to launch once hostilities had ceased, this was developed further after the war and was launched as the Renault 4CV in 1946, and sold over 500,000 in its lifespan which ended in 1961, The famous Dauphine followed and again was a success, but Renault was not standing back and allowing the sales to just accumulate, they were continuing with development and in when the 4CV stopped production the new and extremely modern Renault 4 was launched, this car was to compete with the Citroen 2CV, both cars were very successful and both lasted for nigh on thirty years.

The Renault 4 became a major success for the company and further models followed, including the Renault the R8 and R10, and in 1966 Renault launched a more luxurious car the R16, again this was another success story, the R6 followed, which was a small 16, and then the Renault 5 arrived in 1972 and further expansion of the model ranges continued into the 80's, world expansion was also part of the plan for Renault and a number of tie ups with foreign marques were made, and some were more successful than others, even in Australia they not only produced their own cars, but Peugeot and Ford too, until Ford pulled out of the factory, which in turn caused the closure of the site.

A number of bland cars were produced through late 80's and 90's nothing which was to ignite the passion that was there for previous cars, however, Renault did have a knack of making cars that people wanted, and  in 1984, amongst the worst year of its existence when the company lost 12.4 billion francs, the Espace was launched, the first car in Europe to fit niche section that would become Renaults own, the Renault 5 was coming to an end and the new car the Clio was introduced to the world with striking looks and a brilliant advertising campaign the Clio soon became a big seller, this was then followed by the 19 replacement, the Megane.

in 1996 the company was privatised, and this freed Renault from the shackles of government purse strings, investments in other parts of the world followed and a tie up with Nissan in 1999, which is still in place today, was made, at the same time, the purchase of Dacia, a Romanian car brand was made, and with the assistance of Renault the Dacia brand went from strength to strength and became thee brand for budget conscious buyers, in 2013 Dacia was launched in the UK to great success with 4,000 models sold in the first four months.

New products came on stream fast and furious, Scenic, Laguna, new Megane, clio updates and so on, and with each new models came increased safety, so much so that Renault has now become the brand of safety with its models all achieving the coveted 5 star NCAP safety certificate, sales were good, well in its home country, in the UK in the 2000's Renault was finding it hard to make a profit, and then the decision was made to slice the brands products for UK sales, the Laguna, Espace, Wind and Kangoo models were scraped, this resulted in sales being halved overnight, but they persevered and by the time 2013 came along, the sales had levelled out and new products were coming on stream.

As well as Safety, Renault has become a name known alongside environmentally conscious cars, with a number of the cars they make being zero emissions, the Twizy, Zoe and Fluence have all been launched to great success, and with further models being produced the future for Renault is looking good, the latest launches include the new Clio and the brand new Captur (which is being reviewed separately) are all looking to the future, with modern computer driven centre consoles, with the ability to download apps via bluetooth from your 3G mobile phone.

Continued alliances with Nissan and Daimler, and pushing Dacia forward with new products and cost busting prices, Renault are now one of the biggest automotive companies by volume, and with this they will be a force to reckon with for many decades to come, the French flair is back in their products, the prices are right, now the perceived reliability needs to be worked on, once this has been ironed out, and with the "4" package that comes with all new Renaults sold in the UK (4 years warranty, 4 years servicing and 4 years roadside assistance) this is a good start.

Here is to the next 114 years,
