PARIS - Vauxhall uses France to launch the Mokka X & Zafira, and the world Premiere of the Viva Rocks & Ampera-e

  • VIVA ROCKS to make world premiere at Paris Motor Show (1st – 16th October)
  • New Mokka X stars in Paris ahead of UK dealer launch next month
  • New Zafira Tourer debuts with new infotainment and cockpit
  • New Ampera-e hints at Vauxhall’s electric future
Vauxhall premiered the VIVA ROCKS and revealed new versions of two class-leading models at the 2016 Paris Motor Show today. VIVA ROCKS will arrive in showrooms next year while the new Mokka X and Zafira Tourer appeared ahead of their dealer launch next month.
Vauxhall also provided a clear signal about its future commitment to electric vehicles with the ground-breaking Ampera-e being readied for UK evaluation early in 2017.
COME ON VAUXHALL IF YOU ARE PUTTING THE VAUXHALL BADGE ON THE CAR YOU COULD AT LEAST CHANGE THE NAME FROM KARL TO VIVA - LOOKS CHEAP AND TACKY AND YOU CAN DO FAR BETTER.

VIVA ROCKS
Vauxhall unveiled the new VIVA ROCKS at the 2016 Paris Motor Show today. Arriving in showrooms next summer, the VIVA ROCKS features a raised ride height with rugged body cladding, a robust new interior and the latest connectivity including OnStar and R 4.0 IntelliLink.
The new model, which celebrates its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show (Booth 501, Hall 5-2; 1st – 16thOctober), features many design cues typically found on larger SUV models, such as an increased ride height that enables better visibility and improved response to uneven surfaces – such as country lanes or potholes. Ideally suited to city conditions, VIVA ROCKS gives occupants excellent connectivity, while retaining the practicality of the Vauxhall VIVA with five doors, five seats, compact dimensions and a luggage capacity in excess of 1,000 litres.
Clever design tweaks set the VIVA ROCKS apart from its A-segment rivals, as well as from its tamer, well-established, sibling. Silver roof rails, rugged front (including fog lights) and rear bumpers with integrated skid pads, muscular wheel arches, and unique 15-inch bi-colour look alloy wheels, all ensure that the new model has a distinctive edge, yet simultaneously keeps enough features to retain the VIVA’s dynamic, sporty appearance.
On the inside, VIVA ROCKS gets a new interior with sophisticated touches throughout. The optional R 4.0 IntelliLink system brings the world of smartphones to the VIVA ROCKS via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, also providing navigation through Apple Maps or Google Maps. Alternatively, Navi 4.0 IntelliLink offers an integrated navigation system.
The connectivity offering of the VIVA ROCKS is completed with the availability of Vauxhall’s personal connectivity and service assistant, Vauxhall OnStar, making it among the best connected A-segment cars on the market.
The updated exterior and stylish interior are not all the VIVA ROCKS has to offer though, giving the same high levels of practicality, comfort and safety provided in the Vauxhall VIVA. Five doors guarantee convenient access to the front and rear seats, which can be folded down to give the VIVA ROCKS an impressive luggage capacity of 1,013 litres. The ‘City’ driving mode reduces steering effort to assist with tight manoeuvres in heavy city traffic, with cruise control supporting speed management. Additional features that support the driver include Park Assist, which makes parking safer and easier.
MOKKA X
Vauxhall’s new Mokka X, which reaches UK showrooms in October, appeared at the 2016 Paris Motor Show today with a fresh interior and exterior design, a new powertrain and featuring OnStar and Apple CarPlay.
With over half a million sold in Europe and nearly 100,000 in the UK, Mokka has seen huge success since its launch in 2012. The Mokka’s compact size (4.28m long), sporty looks and elevated seating position having wowed customers looking for an affordable SUV.
Incorporating cues from Vauxhall’s new design philosophy, the new Mokka X is the first model to introduce the “X” segment identifier for future Vauxhall SUV and crossover vehicles.
The Mokka X’s bold new look is thanks to work carried out by a design team led by Brit Mark Adams. Its new front treatment is aligned with Vauxhall’s new design philosophy including a wing-shaped horizontal front grille and the dominant, sharp double-wing signature of the LED daytime running lights. At the rear is another double wing signature highlighted in the tail lamps, with LED technology an option. Vibrant new colours such as ‘Amber Orange’ and ‘Lava Red’ are also available. On the inside, the Mokka X has a completely new dashboard inspired by the new Astra.
After introducing the much-lauded 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ engine last year, the Mokka range is now extended further to include a new generation 1.4-litre Direct Injection Turbo (152PS) petrol unit which first appeared in the Astra. With a six-speed automatic transmission, adaptive all-wheel drive and start/stop, this Mokka achieves 43.5mpg* and CO2 emissions of 150g/km*.
In addition to the AWD system, Vauxhall engineers have once again made innovative technology available to a broad group of customers by introducing LED Adaptive Forward Lighting headlamps. The new AFL LED system adapts the headlights’ lighting patterns automatically to the driving situation so that the best possible light performance is given without dazzling other road users.
ZAFIRA TOURER
The new Vauxhall Zafira Tourer made its show debut in Paris, demonstrating a unique blend of exceptional versatility and optimum comfort. Its flexibility makes it an ideal choice for families and professionals who need a spacious and versatile vehicle for travelling long distances in high comfort.
The new model will be in showrooms from October across the UK, priced from £18,615 on-the-road. New Zafira Tourer comes with an attractive new exterior and interior that emphasises its spacious design and outstanding in-car connectivity. The latest model comes with all the well-known virtues of its predecessor such as the Flex7 seating system, ergonomically-certified AGR front seats, the Flex-Fix bicycle carrier and FlexRide adaptive damping. The new Zafira Tourer range includes Design, Energy, SRi, SRi Nav, SE, Tech Line, Elite and Elite Nav trim levels.
The latest generation Vauxhall IntelliLink infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and OnStar, including 4G/LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, ensure the Zafira Tourer offers optimum connectivity while on the road. Vauxhall has also introducing full LED Adaptive Forward Lighting headlamps to the Zafira Tourer range.
AMPERA-E
The new Ampera-e electric car, premiered at the Paris Motor Show today, will be evaluated in the UK by Vauxhall with the possibility of right-hand-drive models being produced in a future generation.
Due to be sold by Vauxhall’s sister company, Opel, from 2017 with left-hand-drive, the Ampera-e has a class-leading pure electrical range that can exceed 250 miles without recharging (purely electrical range measured, based on the New European Driving Cycle, or NEDC, in km: > 400; provisional figure). However, even taking into account the real world impact of driving style, road and weather conditions, the car can still achieve a range of over 185 miles under average, every day conditions.
‘Vauxhall is committed to having a future EV presence in its range,’ said Rory Harvey, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director. ‘The technology which underpins the new Ampera-e is of great interest to us, and we will be evaluating LHD cars from next spring and demonstrating them to clients. The fact that Ampera-e is not an eco-luxury or second car for customers broadens its appeal greatly, but it’s obviously vital that the car we sell in our market is right-hand-drive, and that won’t be available in the current generation.’
The class-leading range of 250 miles (provisional figure measured, based on the NEDC) of the Ampera-e – which beats the maximum 186-mile NEDC range of its closest competitor, the BMW i3, fitted with its optional, large 33kWh battery – is not the only feature which will be part of Vauxhall’s appraisal. Clever integration of the ten battery modules means that the 4.17 metre-long car can accommodate five people, yet still offers a 381-litre boot. The battery package is located in the underbody and is tailored to the contours of the vehicle, with no space wasted. The battery, developed in cooperation with LG Chem, comprises 288 lithium-ion cells and has a capacity of 60 kWh.
Sports car acceleration
With maximum torque of 360Nm and power equivalent to 204PS, the Ampera-e’s standing-start and mid-range acceleration figures are on a par with many a sports car. Zero to 30mph takes a mere 3.2 seconds, while 50-75mph – a particularly important yardstick for overtaking performance – takes just 4.5 seconds (preliminary figures). Top speed is electronically limited to 93mph for the benefit of overall range.
The Ampera-e also has the ability to re-charge its batteries while being driven. To do so, the driver just eases off the accelerator in the normal ‘Drive’ mode. The Ampera-e recuperates automatically in overrun and wins back energy from the electric motor, which doubles as a generator. The motor’s braking effect is increased when the driver switches to ‘Low’ mode, therefore increasing recuperation. Furthermore, the driver can switch to ‘Regen on Demand’ for maximum energy recuperation, via a paddle at the back of the steering wheel. The drag torque is so high in ‘Low/Regen on Demand’ modes that the brake pedal need not be applied to reduce speed to a full stop in normal traffic, leaving the Ampera-e to be safely controlled by the accelerator (naturally, the brake pedal still needs to be applied in an emergency).
Initial vehicle simulation models show that drivers can increase the range by up to five per cent compared with ‘Drive’ mode, when applying ‘One Pedal Driving’ with the corresponding full recuperation in dense city stop/go traffic.
Fully connected with OnStar and smartphone integration
The Ampera-e has both the latest generation IntelliLink infotainment and OnStar on board, with the award-winning connectivity and service assistant offering a powerful WiFi hotspot for up to seven devices (depending on market). The Apple CarPlay- and Android Auto-compatible IntelliLink systems bring the world of smartphones into the Ampera-e, allowing passengers complete access to their favourite music, or the luxury of streaming movies.

Wireless Charging
Vauxhall now offers vehicle-integrated wireless charging in the ADAM range, enabling the driver, or passengers, to recharge a mobile device via an electromagnetic field. Reducing clutter and the need for cables, the user only needs to place the device on the integrated charger and wireless charging will begin immediately.
With wireless charging, Vauxhall OnStar, award-winning IntelliLink infotainment technology, CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection, the ADAM keeps its drivers connected like never before.
“Our IntelliLink infotainment technology made its debut in the ADAM, which is the perfect example of how much technology and individuality can be packed into a small car,” said Ian Mitchell, Vauxhall’s ADAM Brand Manager. “Now with wireless charging as well as Vauxhall OnStar, we are taking our in-car technology to an unprecedented level.”
Wireless charging (also known as inductive charging) uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy between two objects via a charging station. Energy is sent through an inductive coupling to an electronic device, which can then use that energy to charge the battery or run the device.
The wireless charger in the ADAM is compatible with the “Qi” and “Powermat” interface standards and it is located in the centre console in front of the gear stick. Drivers can keep their hands on the steering wheel and, using Bluetooth, can pair their phone to the vehicle to make calls or stream music while the device is safely secured and charging.
Wireless charging is available as an option for £150 on UNLIMITED models only.

The vauxhall ADAM no comes with the R4.0 Intellilink System Infotainment technology as standard.

  • R4.0 IntelliLink system available with smartphone integration
  • IntelliLink touchscreen overview similar to smartphone menu
  • Vauxhall OnStar turns ADAM into powerful internet on wheels
Vauxhall has introduced the latest-generation R4.0 IntelliLink system infotainment technology including smartphone integration to its stylish ADAM city car.
Following the introduction of the first-generation award-winning IntelliLink, this update promises to take individualisation even further, with an overview similar to a smartphone menu and the choice of well-known navigation including Apple Maps and Google Maps.

Vauxhall’s innovative OnStar is also now available on ADAM SLAM, S and ROCKS models, enabling personal connectivity and a service assistant while also becoming a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to seven mobile devices, even when abroad – with no additional roaming fees.
“The Vauxhall ADAM in all its variants is the perfect example of how much individuality and technology can be packed into a small car. And with the new smartphone-compatible IntelliLink system and Vauxhall OnStar, we boost our successful lifestyle city car onto a higher level,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Car Line Brand.
As usual, all this comes at very affordable prices: the infotainment system IntelliLink R4.0 is available for just £495 as part of the Technical Pack which also includes parking sensors.
The hardware for the personal connectivity and service assistant OnStar is free with ADAM SLAM, S and ROCKS while use of the Wi-Fi Hotspot is free of charge with all variants for the first 12 months following registration. This means private phone accounts are not charged, because those who connect their smartphones to OnStar enjoy free navigation.
IntelliLink R4.0
Praised for its clear seven-inch colour touchscreen, connectivity options via USB and Bluetooth for audio streaming and viewing photographs, videos and films or making a telephone call via the hands-free module – Vauxhall makes the latest generation of its IntelliLink system even more functional. The new IntelliLink R4.0, which made its debut at this year’s IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in the Astra, integrates the world of smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into the vehicle.
Drivers and passengers simply need devices from Android 5.0 Lollipop and Apple iOS 7.1 (from iPhone 5). It is fast and easy: simply connect the iPhone or Android smartphone to the IntelliLink R4.0 via USB, and the Vauxhall infotainment technology immediately recognises the systems and adapts the smartphone interface to the seven-inch IntelliLink touchscreen.
Drivers can make calls, send and receive messages and listen to music right from the touchscreen or by voice via Siri, when it is safe to do so. Android Auto is built around Google Maps, Google Now and the ability to talk to Google, as well as a growing audio and messaging app ecosystem.
The Google Maps and Apple Maps navigation apps are easy to use: updates are automatically downloaded onto the phone by the respective provider, so the driver always has the latest map data online. Changing the size of the map section on Android Auto is simply done by touching the screen and pinching or zooming accordingly. Another advantage is that smartphone-based systems provide information on traffic conditions in real time along with possible points of interest – including the complete address, opening hours and further details. When a text message from services such as WhatsApp or Skype is received, Android users can have it read out loud to them so they can keep their eyes on the road.
OnStar
Vauxhall OnStar enables stable use of all internet-based services. The personal connectivity and service assistant with its special antenna turns the ADAM into a 4G/LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot. Up to seven mobile devices can be connected to the system at the same time – even abroad. No additional roaming fees are applied.
Vauxhall OnStar offers an all-round carefree package, with services including Automatic Crash Response, 24-hour Roadside and Stolen Vehicle Assistance and Vehicle Diagnostics to name but a few. The myVauxhall smartphone-app allows Vauxhall OnStar users to request help when away from the car, to open or close the car remotely or to access important vehicle data.

ADAM ROCKS READY TO ROLL
Production-ready ADAM ROCKS debuts at the Geneva Motor Show
  • Urban mini-crossover features rugged, outdoor looks and electric folding canvas roof
  • First Vauxhall to get punchy new 115PS 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine
Rocking up to next month’s Geneva Motor Show is Vauxhall’s funky urban mini-crossover the ADAM ROCKS.
The latest edition to Vauxhall’s city chic ADAM range was previewed as a concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and after receiving a rapturous reception the production model is poised to make a show-stopping debut a year later.

Rocking rugged design
Compared with other members of the ADAM family, ROCKS is taller, wider and tougher in appearance, while also offering a full-length electric folding canvas roof.
ADAM ROCKS’ new crossover body style is supported by a chassis that is raised 15mm with a wider stance. Agile parkour athletes, who move from one place to another, negotiating urban obstacles in between, were the inspiration for this sporty crossover concept.

Parts of the chassis system have been modified or re-tuned – including dampers, springs, the rear suspension geometry, and steering. The higher, wider looks are matched by a choice of 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels. These can be further personalized with new wheel clips in “Wild” design and different colours that are unique to ROCKS.
Protective, anthracite-coloured cladding is wrapped tightly around the ADAM ROCKS, giving it a tough, muscular look. The front trapezoidal grille, with a chrome central brand bar, is embedded in the cladding, while contrasting, satin chrome ‘boomerang’ elements frame the front fog lamps/indicator housings and the reversing/fog lamps at the rear. An integrated rear roof spoiler and LED daytime running lights also come as standard. Silver skid plates front and rear and a bold chrome exhaust complete the exterior design.
New exterior paint colours will be introduced with ADAM ROCKS, starting with the vibrant yellow Goldbusters.
ROCKS combines its rugged individuality with open air fun. The electric folding canvas roof is operated via a button located in the front area of the headliner and folds back neatly on to the C-pillars in just five seconds. Creating a wide opening into the sky, this stylish system has no negative impact on body stiffness or on the car’s functionality: the boot keeps the full opening of a hatchback and loading volume remains untouched.

The entire roof module is acoustically tuned for noise insulation inside the cabin, and the robust, three-layer fabric has a neoprene centre for weatherproofing and durability. The folding canvas roof is available in a choice of three exterior colours – Black, Sweet Coffee or Light Oak – that combine with the different roof colours of the ROCKS.
ROCKS’ cabin reverberates with its own distinctive character. Two new, exclusive ROCKS interior trims have been designed. They include a main instrument cluster, seat and door panel colours and other trim elements – all unique to Vauxhall’s urban chic newcomer. One trim is taken directly from the ADAM ROCKS concept car revealed last year: it has elegant-sporty Peanut-coloured fabric/Morrocana seats and door panels, leather steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake in the same colour, and a “Surf” décor trim. The other features a sophisticated Coffee Bean design – rich dark brown seats in a black cabin trimmed with bright blue stitching.
New 1.0-litre engine packs triple punch
ROCKS is the first model to feature Vauxhall’s all-new 1.0-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo three-cylinder engine. This high-tech pocket rocket raises the bar for three-cylinder engine refinement and packs up to 115PS, with impressive low-end torque of 166 Nm.

Contributing to the overall efficiency of the all-aluminium engine with a single scroll turbocharger include direct injection, variable valve timing, a switchable water pump and an integrated exhaust manifold. Fuel-saving Start/Stop technology is an integral part of the system and offered as standard. The new 1.0 ECOTEC comes with a choice of two power outputs, 90PS and 115PS.
Both versions of the new three-cylinder powerhouse are mated to an all-new six-speed manual gearbox with a compact package design. During its development, focus was on efficiency (thanks to reduced friction) and benchmark shifting: gear change is comfortable, precise and smooth.
The new engine tops a powertrain portfolio including ADAM’s three current four-cylinder naturally-aspirated units comprising a 1.2-litre engine with 70PS and a 1.4-litre available in two power outputs, 87PS and 100PS.
Like its ADAM siblings, ROCKS is one of the best connected small cars around thanks to its state-of-the-art Intelilink infotainment system. Priced from just £275, it allows seamless integration of Android as well as Apple iOS smartphone functionalities into the car. It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, a seven-inch high-definition colour touch-screen and seven speakers. Clever apps including navigation BringGo, Stitcher and TuneIn can be downloaded.
The integration of Apple iOS devices into the system enables Siri Eyes Free voice control. This makes it possible for drivers to have incoming text messages read aloud and to dictate messages while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the steering wheel.
“ADAM ROCKS combines the toughness of a crossover with the coolness of open air driving,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand. “It’s the perfect ADAM for active drivers wanting to stand out from the crowd.”
ADAM ROCKS pricing will be announced when it goes on sale in the summer. Production is due to start in Eisenach, Germany in August.

FULL REVEAL OF VAUXHALL'S RADICAL GENEVA STAR
  • Low-weight, high-power VXR derivative set for Geneva unveil
  • EXTREME will be the most powerful front-wheel drive Vauxhall ever
  • Low production run planned by Vauxhall if reaction is positive
With over 300PS generated from its 2.0-litre turbo engine, the Astra VXR EXTREME will be the most powerful front-wheel drive Vauxhall ever when it’s unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
Derived from last year’s Astra Cup race car that competed in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship, the EXTREME is the lighter, more powerful street-legal race sibling to the current Astra VXR.
Shorn of 100kg, thanks to liberal use of high-quality carbon components, the EXTREME’s natural environment will be the race track. If public reaction is as positive as expected, Vauxhall plans a low-volume production run for the EXTREME.
With direct injection and variable camshaft phasing, the EXTREME’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine is the most powerful four-cylinder unit Vauxhall has ever produced. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential.
The EXTREME is 100kg lighter than a standard Astra VXR thanks to its high-quality, carbon fibre components. This high-strength, ultra-light material is used for the aerodynamically-optimised rear wing, the diffuser, front spoiler, bonnet, suspension cross-bracing, engine cover, wheels, rear wheelhouse ventilation and roof.
Noticeably lowering the EXTREME’s centre of gravity is the in-house manufactured carbon fibre roof which weighs just 2.6kg, compared with a steel roof’s 9.3kg. The wings are made of aluminium and weigh only 800g a piece instead of 2.2kg in steel. Weight reduction in key areas greatly improves agility, overall handling and the car’s power-to-weight ratio.
Vauxhall has also given the EXTREME exceptional stopping power to match, with a Brembo six-piston brake system including 370mm diameter discs up front race car. Ultra high-performance, 245/35, 19-inch tyres, specially developed for the EXTREME, also play a key role and give almost as much grip as those on the race car. In addition, the damper is adjustable, just like in a real touring car racer.
Inside the EXTREME, the back seats have been taken out and a safety roll bar put in their place.  EXTREME also get s Recaro bucket seats, with six-point safety belts from Schroth and a carbon-fibre-reinforced, suede-covered steering wheel with fine yellow decorative stitching.
The Astra VXR is now the best-selling VXR and the UK remains the largest market in Europe for Vauxhall and Opel’s highest powered models.
VAUXHALL’S NEW 1.0-LITRE TRIPLE MAKES GENEVA DEBUT IN ADAM
  • New state-of-the-art three-cylinder petrol engine debuts in ADAM
  • 1.0-litre Direct Injection Turbo raises bar for three-cylinder engine refinement
  • Greater low-end torque and pulling power than 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engines
  • Greener small petrol engine footprint with ultra-low 99g/km CO2 emissions
  • Teamed with all-new six-speed gearbox that’s 30 per cent lighter than predecessor
Vauxhall’s new cutting-edge 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol engine is set to debut in the urban-chic ADAM at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
ADAM is the first car in the Vauxhall range to receive the new, all-aluminium 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo petrol engine that has been developed at Vauxhall/Opel’s International Technical Development Centre.
The pocket powerhouse will come in two power outputs, giving 90PS and 115PS. Both deliver strong, low-end torque of 166Nm from just 1,800 rpm. Like the two new generation 1.6-litre mid-size units Vauxhall has launched recently, the1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo petrol and the 1.6 CDTi ‘Whisper Diesel’, the new 1.0 ECOTEC offers benchmark refinement with outstandingly low noise, vibration and harshness.
With Start/Stop functionality as standard, the 90PS version gives ADAM combined cycle fuel consumption as low as 62mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 99g/km, according to preliminary data. Efficiency enablers include direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, weight-saving all-aluminium construction and a switchable water pump.
The first in a completely new family of small displacement petrol engines, the 12-valve 1.0 ECOTEC is the next step in Vauxhall’s powertrain offensive following the recent introduction of new 1.6-litre mid-size petrol and diesel engine families.

These three new powertrain families share a common DNA and development target: to be the most refined in their respective categories. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, Vauxhall/Opel engineers focused on eliminating ‘off-beat’ running characteristics which traditionally detract from the economical driving appeal of three-cylinder engines.
“We not only set out to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, we also wanted to demonstrate that three cylinders can be just as refined as four or more,” says Dr. Matthias Alt, Vauxhall/Opel’s Chief Engineer, Small Gasoline Engines. “We tackled at source the balance, noise and vibration issues typical of conventional three-cylinder engines, and we’re confident ADAM customers will be enthusiastic about the results.”
The cylinder block, in high pressure die-cast aluminium, is designed to reduce radiated and structure-borne engine noise, as well as reduce weight. The high-pressure fuel rail and injectors are also structurally isolated from the cylinder head to minimise the transmission of pulsing, while both the fuel pump and fuel line are acoustically treated.
A further contributor to running refinement is the installation of a balance shaft in the oil sump. Driven by a chain with inverted teeth for quiet running, it counter-rotates at crankshaft speed and is carefully mass-optimised to offset the inherent vibrations of a three cylinder operation.
Other noise attenuation measures include: acoustically-optimised covers for the top and front of the engine, the intake manifold and camshaft housings; crankshaft isolation with iron main bearing inserts; inverted teeth for camshaft drive chains; a low-hiss turbo charger, and a lower oil pan in steel.
With all these ‘sound engineering’ features, the new 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo is not only more refined than other three-cylinder engines, it’s also quieter than many four-cylinder units. For example, in bench testing at full throttle, it emits lower noise levels across all engine speeds than similarly powerful petrol naturally-aspirated engines of 1.6-litre displacement.
Small engine with big appeal
The new 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo also packs a punch. It has all the power
characteristics to make down-sizing feel like right-sizing, generating more torque, for example, than most 1.6-litre, naturally-aspirated engines.
In the ADAM, the 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo produces 166Nm from just 1,800 rpm. That’s almost 30 per cent more pulling power than the naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre generates at the same rpm. The 115PS version extends the torque plateau to up to 4,700 rpm. The exhaust manifold is housed in the aluminium cylinder head, to which the tiny, low-inertia, water-cooled turbocharger is directly bolted. This compact installation contributes to the delivery of a fast boost charge which gives the 1.0 ECOTEC such strong, low-end power.
The six-vent fuel injectors in the direct injection system are centrally located above each piston to provide efficient combustion, and dual cam-phasing enables variable valve timing for optimum engine breathing. A twin displacement oil pump and a switchable water pump, which is disengaged when the engine coolant is cold in order to accelerate warm-up, also contribute to low fuel consumption.
New lightweight gearbox
If benchmark-setting running refinement, low-end torque and efficiency wasn’t enough, this 1.0-litre powerhouse is mated to a new generation six-speed manual transmission. With a compact design and a dry weight of only 37kg, it is about 30 per cent lighter than units it replaces.
Featuring superior shift quality and excellent precision, with a short lever travel and low effort, the new transmission incorporates many of the smooth gear change refinements recently introduced by Vauxhall. These include the use of gears with wide, asymmetrically-cut dog teeth and triple-cone synchronisers for first/second gear, with double cones for third/fourth. Reverse gear is also synchronised. In addition to ADAM, this slick-shifting new gearbox will be rolled out into in other Vauxhall models.
The new 1.0-litre engine will go on sale on ADAM in the spring.
VAUXHALL ADAM S POCKET ROCKET SET FOR GENEVA DEBUT
  • Geneva reveal: New top-of-the-line performance star of ADAM range
  • Special: 150PS 1.4 Turbo engine and performance chassis unique to ADAM S
  • Strong: Impressive VXR braking system with four disc brakes
  • Distinctive: ‘Red ’n Roll’ styling theme, plus numerous ADAM individualisation choices
Trendy, highly customisable and seductively sporty: the close-to-production ADAM S version showcases the hot new performance model that will top Vauxhall’s super-cool small car family.
Featuring a 150PS, 1.4-litre Turbo ECOTEC engine, sports-tuned suspension, VXR braking system and distinctive ‘Red ’n Roll’ styling, ADAM S impeccably blends punch and power with zestful, sharp-edged responses.
The ADAM S is making its public debut on the Vauxhall/Opel stand at the 84th Geneva Motor Show alongside new ADAM models powered by the new generation three-cylinder 1.0 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo and the new crossover ADAM ROCKS.

Turbocharged pocket rocket
With 150PS and 220Nm of torque on tap, the special new version of the 1.4-litre Turbo ECOTEC unit in the ADAM S boasts a specific power output exceeding 100PS/litre. It is a turbocharged, high performance unit derived from the ADAM’s existing four-cylinder, 1.4-litre engine, that has been exclusively developed for the ADAM S. It delivers 50 per cent more horsepower and 70 per cent more torque than its naturally-aspirated 1.4-litre stable-mate. Combined to a six-speed manual gearbox, it propels the ADAM S to a top speed of 137mph.
ADAM S’s 1.4 Turbo engine includes dual cam phasing for continuously variable valve timing and a turbocharger integrated within the exhaust manifold for reduced weight and compact packaging. Numerous weight-saving features include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold. Start/Stop technology is naturally fitted, and the engine already meets the future Euro 6 emission standards.
More power is just part of this pocket rocket’s appeal – it also has a specially-tuned performance chassis developed exclusively for the ADAM S and direct, sharp performance steering to match. The car displayed on the Vauxhall/Opel stand also reveals how stopping power is increased with the installation of larger VXR performance 'S' Red Brakes including 16-inch front and 15-inch rear discs featuring red-painted calipers. The 18-inch wheels are fitted with 225/35 R 18 tyres.
Unique looks with Red ’n Roll design theme
The ADAM S at the Geneva Motor Show gives further impressions of features from the future production version. Its red body paint is mated with an anthracite grey roof enhanced by a special rear spoiler; the grille brand bar and door mirror caps both feature a sporty carbon-look. The front lip spoiler, side sill moldings and an extended rear bumper cut-out with a visible, bold exhaust tailpipe complete the ADAM S livery.
The cabin features front Recaro Performance seats in Morrocana and leather and adopts ADAM S’s unique Red ’n Roll design theme. It consists of a leather pack, including a red leather-trimmed steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake as well as distinctive red and white flashes on the instrument and door panels. Many further refined details allow for more individualisation.

The close-to-production ADAM S version also has black rear privacy glass, LED daytime running and rear tail lights, electronic climate control and Vauxhall’s award-winning, sophisticated IntelliLink system that offers state-of-the-art connectivity and apps. This infotainment system is fully compatible with latest smartphones using both ANDROID and Apple iOS. It provides USB and Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, seven speakers and a seven-inch high-definition colour touch-screen. Vauxhall’s smart IntelliLink system also provides navigation by the BringGo app, as well as the Stitcher and TuneIn apps. The integration of Apple iOS devices into the system enables use of the Siri Eyes Free voice control function. It’s safe and easy-to-use technology which makes ADAM the best connected small car on the market.
CLEAN MACHINE: VAUXHALL ASTRA GETS NEW 1.6-LITRE ‘WHISPER DIESEL’
  • New 1.6 CDTi offers outstanding refinement and economy
  • Low 97g/km CO2 emissions and up to 76.3mpg combined
The top-selling Astra is now available with a super-smooth new generation 1.6 CDTi engine, Vauxhall’s cleanest ever mid-size diesel.
Previously only available on the Zafira Tourer and the Meriva, the new 1.6 CDTi engine is now set to enhance the Astra’s appeal as Vauxhall continues to significantly refresh its powertrain offer.
Unveiled in the Astra at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, the much-lauded new engine is available in two power outputs: 110PS and 136PS, in both hatchback and Sports Tourer body styles.  The 110PS version achieves 76.3mpg combined with CO2 emission of just 97g/km, and 72.4mpg combined and 104g/km in 136PS guise.
Quiet and refined, the new 1.6 CDTi is one of the best engines in its class for noise and vibration thanks to an efficient combustion process with multiple injection, re-designed components and the use of acoustic covers.
Already Euro 6-compliant, the engine is best-in-class in noise and vibration generation thanks to its optimised component design, an especially efficient combustion process with multiple injection.
Not only is the new 1.6 CDTi super-refined, it’s also clean and powerful, too. A high-pressure common rail injection system and lean NOx trap exhaust-after treatment (LNT) improve efficiency, while a variable turbine turbocharger help make the new diesel a strong performer, too.
Vauxhall/Opel have invested over €50 million in the development and optimisation of five and six-speed gear boxes. The six-speed ‘box mated to the 1.6 CDTi features a revised gear change and improved shift quality that is faster, slicker and less effort.
“We are delighted to introduce the 1.6-litre ‘Whisper Diesel’ to the top-selling Astra range,” said Stuart Harris, Vauxhall’s Head of Carline Brand.  “The new 1.6-litre engine is Vauxhall’s cleanest ever mid-size diesel and is now available on Astra, as well as Meriva and Zafira Tourer.”
The Astra with the 1.6 CDTi is available to order now with first deliveries expected from April.

5.     Roadside assistance: If drivers find themselves stranded, they are never alone. Whether it is an empty gas tank or a flat tire, a push of the emergency button is all it takes for OnStar to send help to the scene.
6.     Vehicle diagnostics: OnStar sends a monthly Vehicle Diagnostics email with the most important vehicle data and information. A diagnostic check can be requested at any time at the push of a button.
7.     Remote services: Drivers never have to worry about locking their keys in the car again. They just have to call OnStar, where an advisor will verify their account and send a signal to their vehicle to unlock the doors. Destination addresses can be sent immediately to the on-board navigation system by pressing the OnStar button, or via the RemoteLink app
Additional information about availability of vehicles sold in Europe with OnStar and pricing will be announced closer to the launch.

Top connectivity today: IntelliLink in ADAM, Insignia, Meriva and Co.
Opel/Vauxhall already offers ultra-modern connectivity possibilities today – with the innovative infotainment system IntelliLink. The IntelliLink version in the urban lifestyle car ADAM is especially sophisticated. The advanced and yet affordable system makes the small individualisation champion the best connected small car on the market.” A major benefit is that IntelliLink is compatible with both Apple iOS and Android software-operated smartphones. • Listen to, write and send an iMessage or text message to a telephone number or saved contact
  • Access calendar and add appointments
  • Siri Eyes Free also provides answers to questions about sports results or the dates of national holidays, for example. To minimize distraction from road traffic and increase safety, the iPhone screen remains dark.
The high-tech IntelliLink system is not a privilege limited to ADAM. In various infotainment variants, it upgrades the new Insignia and Meriva as well as many other Opel/Vauxhall models including the Astra, Mokka, Cascada and Zafira Tourer. The system impresses with direct, pleasant and user-friendly operation. While keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, drivers enjoy a broad spectrum of information and entertainment. Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming are available, as is the display of images via USB connection, whereby the latter requires the vehicle to be parked. Fast and precise navigation is standard with the Navi 950 Europa IntelliLink system. Destinations can either be entered over the familiar control button or by voice command. The typical IntelliLink monitor surface guarantees excellent readability. In addition, the driver can also have the Navi 950 IntelliLink system read out incoming text messages.
