Thunder and lightning made for a spectacular reveal of the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Feature this evening. BMW took centre stage as Honoured Marque at the world’s most luxurious motoring event, celebrating 100 years of BMW.
BMW guests and media enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at Goodwood House, followed by speeches by Lord March and Dr Nicholas Peter around the turning circle, beneath sculptor Gerry Judah’s glorious creation.

The magnificent floodlit sculpture swept up into a sky lit up with its own fireworks as guests waited to see their own dramatic display. Music, lasers in blues and golds, and “1916 – 2016” illuminated in fireworks against Goodwood House accompanied the official reveal, as a cavalcade of BMW’s finest cars swept up the famous Goodwood hill and the propellers of a Klemm Kl 35 spun lit with the BMW badge.
Epitomising this year’s Festival of Speed theme, ‘Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power’, the magnificent Central Feature comprises three sweeping steel forms put together in a celebration of speed and dynamism. BMW’s myriad motorsport successes are represented on each arm, with the legendary BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster, the Gordon Murray-designed Brabham-BMW BT52, and the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR featured.

Visitors will be able to see and hear many products from BMW’s past that continue to make their mark on the company today. Cars steering their way up Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile course include a beautiful 1957 BMW 507, the Mille Miglia-winning BMW 328 Touring CoupĂ© from 1940, and a 1965 BMW 1800 TI/SA – an early example of BMW’s unparalleled success in touring car racing. Meanwhile, motorcycle enthusiasts will be treated to an array of classic and modern bikes including a 1966 BMW R50 S Kaczor, a 1976 BMW R90S TT and legendary WR750 Kompressor from 1929.

Goodwood Road Racing Club members can very much look forward to their own spectacular reveal tomorrow evening, at the club’s annual summer ball.

It Has been THIRTY years since the unveiling of the Volvo 480 ES at Geneva, where has the time gone.

The Volvo 480 ES was the first front-wheel-drive car with a transverse engine produced by Volvo. It's now been 30 years since this wedge-shaped car made its official premiere at the Geneva Motor Show.
When the annual motor show in Geneva opened on 6 March 1986, the Volvo 480 ES was one of the cars that attracted the most attention. It was not just the premiere of the first sports car from Volvo in more than a decade; the 480 ES was also the brand's first front-wheel-drive car in series production.

The model designation was tied to the 1800 ES sports wagon, which ended production in 1973. The low, wedge-shaped body with its pointed nose and pop-up headlights provided a hint of the future, while the abruptly ending rear section with its glass tailgate was yet another way to pay homage to the 1800 ES.
Several sketches had been prepared by designers such as Carozzeria Bertone and Volvo Cars' Chief Designer Jan Wilsgaard, but the proposal that got the green light was created by John De Vries of Volvo's subsidiary in the Netherlands. Dynamics and personality were key words guiding the design.
The interior was also innovative, with an instrument panel angled towards the driver and adjustable backrests in the individual rear seats. The interior was designed by Peter Horbury, who would later become Volvo's Chief Designer.
The level of technology in the car was high, and the 480 ES was well equipped even in the standard version. A new feature was the trip computer. This “electronic information centre” could give the driver information about average fuel consumption, average speed, range and outside temperature. Digitally, of course.
The 1.7-litre engine came from Renault and produced 109 hp thanks to the help of catalytic converters. This was enough to produce a top speed of 118 mph and enabled the car to sprint to 62 mph in 9.5 seconds. While the engine's power output was not particularly high, the 480 ES was a road car with driving properties that could match its sporty appearance.
1998 saw the launch of the 480 Turbo, which had a 120 hp engine with the help of its exhaust turbo and intercooler. In 1993, a new 2.0-litre engine was added to the 480 ES series, with 110 hp and, above all, improved torque.
The 480 series was designed to be a niche model and was not a big seller for Volvo. However, it was more important for Volvo than many realised at the Geneva Motor Show in 1986.
The 480 was namely the first car in a large and comprehensive project – internally called Galaxy. The name implied that they were aiming for the stars. For Volvo, it meant that a new era of technology was beginning. Rear-wheel drive was replaced with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and a range of new engines was developed.
Project Galaxy began in 1978. Two years later, the first front-wheel-drive prototype was ready. The project was then split up so that Volvo Cars in Sweden was responsible for the larger car that would become the 850, and the Dutch subsidiary Volvo Cars B.V. was responsible for the smaller models – the 440, 460 and 480.
There were plans for an open 480 ES, and a prototype of a convertible version of the 480 was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1990. However, it never made it into production. Neither did the Targa version that was also developed for study purposes. Three of the prototypes of an open 480 ES are currently preserved at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg.
The Volvo 480 ES was primarily marketed in Europe. The largest single market was the UK, where 22,000 cars were sold. Production of the car in Volvo's plant in Born, Netherlands ended in September 1995. At the same time, the new compact model S40 was picked up. 76,375 Volvo 480s were built in total.

Rare Vintage 8 Litre Bentley, stunning, immaculate and for sale, I wish i had the money for this !!!!!!!

  • Rare vintage Bentley offered for sale with designer Louis Vuitton luggage
  • The 1931 8 Litre Bentley is not just for show, though – it comes with a strong racing pedigree
  • Once drove from Jersey to Belgium straight to a timed kilometre race in Ghent where it set a course record
  • Previous holder of three Brighton Speed Trials records
  • The car has been checked and authenticated by William Medcalf Vintage Bentley, a world authority in all things related to vintage Bentleys
Style and performance go hand-in-hand with the latest Bentley offered for sale by William Medcalf Vintage Bentley, world-renowned authority in all things vintage Bentley.
The 1931 8 Litre Bentley comes with a long list of racing pedigree that includes a selection of course records and class wins over an illustrious competing career. It is a perfect example of the high-end vehicles offered for sale by William Medcalf Vintage Bentley.

However, any future owner will also get a touch of period luxury with their new car, as it also comes with a set of Louis Vuitton luggage. The two suitcases are made to fit on the rear luggage rack of this pristine and majestic car, and are in immaculate condition.
The matching cases are held firmly in place by bespoke metal fastenings front and rear, and come with immaculate leather covered handles and metal catches and hinges.
William Medcalf Vintage Bentley is selling the car with a large file of history, which shows it has been lovingly and well maintained throughout its lifetime. It comes with the original 8 Litre engine, which was the largest of its type made by Bentley.
Only 100 of its type were made, and it was sold with the claim that the four-seater version could be put into top gear then accelerate from 0-100mph while fully loaded with passengers and luggage. This version is being sold with a lightweight two-seater sports body.
Its racing history includes a trip to Ghent in 1969, and the car comes with a detailed account from the then owner, which describes how he took it over to a timed kilometre competition. Troubles with weather and ferry crossings meant that the car didn’t arrive in France until the day before the event was scheduled to take place. A non-stop, fast-paced trek from Le Havre meant that the car arrived at the last possible moment, late on the evening the night before the competition. This didn’t stop the car from setting a new Bentley course record, with a two-way average speed of 125mph, coming fourth overall against much new cars.
William Medcalf said: “As soon as I saw this car it was clear it was a perfect example of the brand and the wide-ranging appeal that vintage Bentleys hold. The Louis Vuitton luggage helps it offer a real taste of 1930s luxury, while the undoubted performance of the 8 Litre engine means it could easily add to its already decorated racing career.”
The Louis Vuitton Bentley is offered for sale alongside several other noteworthy cars in the West Sussex showroom. These include a completely original and unrestored 4 ½ Litre drophead that was discovered in a house in Kew, South London in 2015. It has been mechanically overhauled so it is driveable, but everything else about it has not been touched, meaning it is entirely original and unchanged from when it was delivered to its first owner in 1928.
The car is available for viewing at William Medcalf Vintage Bentley’s showroom in Liss, West Sussex.

Jaguar showcases a further expansion to its range of accessories with respected designers,

  • Successful collaboration between Jaguar and Oliver Sweeney continues
  • Two new styles named Weslake and Sayer
  • Further co-designed styles to launch in 2016
Jaguar and Oliver Sweeney announce the latest range of co-developed shoes from the on-going collaboration between the British brands today.
Named Weslake and Sayer, the two new styles of formal driving shoe are celebrations of the company’s design and engineering heritage. Malcolm Sayer was one of the company’s most famous designers, the man credited with the C-type, D-type, E-type, XJ-S and the unique XJ13. Whilst Harry Weslake was Jaguar’s legendary engine designer.

Jaguar’s Advanced Design Director, Julian Thomson, said:
“This is a great relationship as both Jaguar and Oliver Sweeney have much in common: British craftsmanship, artistry and a love of the creative process.  Above all we’re all very proud of this latest collection that we’ve created together.”
Designed and developed using similar processes to those adopted by Jaguar design, the shoe styles were sculpted and refined in clay first, before 3-D printing using composite plastics for pre-production sign off.  The prototypes were then sent as an approved design to the Oliver Sweeney factory in Italy to be hand crafted and stitched in to finished shoes.
Unique construction features of the shoes include a super-flexible yet firm sole to maximise driving comfort and to maintain the flowing lines of the upper’s style.  A special heel profile, chamfered to create a pivot point for better pedal control, and a waist-less finish ensure a fluid driving experience without the shoes catching on pedals.
The upper design echoes some of the design cues from Jaguar’s latest range of vehicles, with the curved sewn panel on the shoe taking a similar line to that of the distinctive D-pillar of the XJ, while the chisel toe profile recalls the signature squared-off grille, used on every current Jaguar, including the all-new F-Pace crossover and F-type sports car.
Oliver Sweeney Cobbler-in-Chief, Tim Cooper, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to build on our partnership with Jaguar.  Collaborating with another great British brand has been really inspiring, and we’ve truly worked together on these shoes to create something that reflects what both of our brands represent: a luxurious, modern take on traditional craftsmanship.  As a result, the shoes are not only beautiful objects, but ideal for driving in too.”
The new Jaguar by Oliver Sweeney range of formal driving shoes goes on sale from 1 October 2015, priced at £325 from Oliver Sweeney retail stores and online at www.oliversweeney.com.

He went on to study industrial design and graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, and subsequently from the Royal College of Art in London with a postgraduate Masters degree in vehicle design.

President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, Alisdair Suttie, commenting on his presentation to Ian Callum, said:

“There is a very strong contingent of Scots in the world automotive sector, in both racing and industry, some of whom have been absolutely fundamental in putting Scotland on the map when it comes to globally significant achievements on wheels.

These are the people that the Scottish Motoring Hall of Fame was created to celebrate, and Ian Callum, was right up there at the top of our list of such individuals.

Jaguar’s Director of Design, Ian Callum, collects Designer of the Year Award.

  • Jaguar’s Director of Design, Ian Callum, collects Designer of the Year Award after topping The Drum’s coveted Designerati list
  • Ian Callum top with Maggie Hodgetts, Head of Graphic Design at Waitrose and Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry in second and third place respectively
  • Ian praised for his dedication to innovation and eye for detail in his car designs including the Jaguar F-TYPE, XE and all-new XF
  • Designerati list celebrates elite group of the top 100 most influential individuals in UK design
Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design, has won the Designer of the Year Award after taking the number one position in The Drum’s second annual Designerati – a list celebrating the top 100 most influential individuals in UK design.
The expert panel of judges decided Ian is this year’s most influential UK designer finishing top ahead of Maggie Hodgetts, Head of Graphic Design at Waitrose and Christopher Bailey, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry in second and third place respectively.

Stephen Lepitak, editor of The Drum, said: "Ian Callum is a visionary of British design. From his roots at Ford in the 1970s, to his craftsmanship on Aston Martin, his influence on car design is legendary.
"His beautifully simple designs, including the 2013 Jaguar F-TYPE and the new XF, unveiled last month, have ushered in a new era for Jaguar, breathing life into the classic brand.
"Ian's dedication to innovation, his eye for detail and his strong vision for what Jaguar cars should look like truly represent the best of design in the UK."
Ian Callum, Jaguar’s Director of Design, said: “It is an honour to reach the number one position in the Designerati list. For an automotive designer to claim this award is very special indeed – especially considering the depth and array of talented UK designers across the disciplines of architecture, fashion and graphic design.
"Being ranked number one and winning The Drum's Designer of the Year Award is testament to the fantastic team at Jaguar I’m privileged to work with every day.”
Individuals on the Designerati list are judged on their overall career successes todate and highlights over the preceding 12 months as well as general involvement in the industry as a whole.
Ian’s career includes time at Ford, where he worked on the Escort Cosworth, and Aston Martin where he was key to the design of the DB7, DB9 and Vanquish. The first examples of Jaguar’s design direction under Callum were the luxury XK grand tourer, the XF saloon and XF Sportbrake, XJ saloon car and the two-seater F-TYPE sportscar. September 2014 saw the launch of an all-new Jaguar model line in the form of the XE, followed closely in March 2015 by the introduction of the second-generation XF.
Since joining Jaguar in 1999, Ian and his team have created striking concept cars such as the R-Coupe, RD-6, C-X17 and the C-X75, recently announced as featuring in the 24th Bond movie, Spectre due out later this year.
This is Ian’s second major honour within six months after he was awarded the Minerva Medal by the Chartered Society of Designers for his outstanding contribution to automotive design.
