Warrenty Direct details highest head gasket failures by brand.

  • Warranty Direct reveals head gasket failure rates
Used cars made by MG*, Rover or Daewoo are most likely to suffer expensive head gasket failure according to new data from Warranty Direct.
While most vehicles are more prone to common electrical mishaps or suspension issues, head gasket failure – every used car buyer’s nightmare – can strike nearly six per cent of some three to 12 year-old vehicles.

Costing an alarming £770 on average to repair, head gasket breakdowns tend to hit after a car is at least three years old.
Vehicles made by Proton, Saab and Fiat are the next most likely to suffer from the glitch feared most by used car buyers.
The head gasket sits between the engine block and cylinder head, effectively sealing the engine to prevent the engine oil and coolant mixing. When it fails, a car will often lose power, overheat or emit white smoke from exhaust.
The head gasket hall of shame
ManufacturerChance of head gasket failure in one year
MG*5.61%
ROVER*4.75%
DAEWOO2.36%
PROTON2.04%
SAAB1.27%
FIAT1.20%
CHRYSLER0.89%
PEUGEOT0.81%
SUBARU0.78%
VAUXHALL0.64%
Warranty Direct managing director, David Gerrans, said: “Anybody familiar with buying used will know about head gaskets and how costly they can be to repair, I can speak from bitter experience.
“Some cars are almost immune to failures of this sort, while others are quite likely to blow. Bear in mind, too, that all the cars we cover are maintained according to manufacturer guidelines, so the problem could be even more prevalent on cars with patchy history and many former keepers.
“Even though some of the poorest performing brands are now under new ownership or no longer exist in their former guise, there are thousands of these vehicles on the used market.”
At the other end of the scale, the Warranty Direct data shows that less than one in 500 vehicles made by Lexus will suffer a head gasket problem, and less than one in 1,000 Aston Martins are susceptible.
Head gasket failure is a common cause of cars overheating – a problem Warranty Direct covers unlike most products in the marketplace.

USA - After GM, now it is Toyota (AGAIN) Pontiac, and Honda that issues recalls, will it ever end ?

On top of a new batch of GM recalls announced today, Toyota and Honda have issued recalls of their own. Toyota is recalling certain 2002-2004 Toyota Sequoia and Lexus SC models as well as 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla, Toyota Corolla Matrix, Toyota Tundra, and Pontiac Vibe vehicles.

In almost 844,000 of these cars, the airbag inflator may rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash, releasing metal fragments that can strike passengers. The recall applies to the original airbags installed in the vehicle as well as any replacement airbags that may have been put in.

Toyota will notify owners of recalled vehicles to come in for repairs, but so far it has not yet scheduled a date for the recall to begin. A smaller recall involves around 1,000 Honda Fit subcompacts for a driveshaft failure. In these cars, the driveshaft may break because of a heat treatment manufacturing error in the factory. This problem may cause the vehicle to lose power and coast to a stop if already in motion. But if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake activated, the vehicle could move unexpectedly.

Only 2013 model year Fits equipped with manual transmissions are affected by this recall. The recall is expected to start June 15. All repairs for the Honda and Toyota recalls will be conducted free of charge. Consumers can contact Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331 while Honda owners can call the automaker at (800) 999-1009. Pontiac Vibe owners can call GM at (800) 521-7300. USA - GM wants customers to agree to suspend suits within 10 days

General Motors Co. told a bankruptcy judge that car owners should agree “voluntarily” within 10 days to suspend 59 lawsuits over ignition-switch defects pending his decision on whether all their demands are allowable.
The lawsuits were already stopped last month by federal judges in Texas and California while GM sought a ruling from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber in Manhattan on whether the claims were permitted under the terms of the carmaker’s 2009 reorganization. The car owners are seeking as much as $10 billion for the lost value of their vehicles.

Some have asked Gerber for a quick decision on whether they can keep suing on grounds that he won’t consider when he assesses the scope of his court orders in the bankruptcy, which shielded GM from some legal actions.
Customers who don’t agree to the halt that GM is seeking should be required to file papers in court by May 25 explaining why the judge shouldn’t force them to, the carmaker said in a Wednesday bankruptcy court filing.

The automaker asked Gerber to put the stay proposal at the top of the agenda for a conference Friday on how the case should proceed.
Some GM customers also want permission to immediately seek enough information from the company to ground the 2.59 million cars it has recalled over the faulty ignition switches, which have been linked to 13 deaths.

USA - Nissan recalls nearly ONE MILLION vehicles in N.A. because airbags might fail to deploy.

Nissan Motor Co. said it will recall 989,701 vehicles including its latest Altima sedans in North America to fix a software problem that could deactivate the airbags.
The software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by Nissan. This may lead to a failure of the airbag to deploy during a crash and could increase the risk of injury to the passenger, according to the document.
Nissan has received no report of accidents related to the problem, said Noriko Yoneyama, a company spokeswoman. The recall will only affect vehicles sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico, she said.
The recall will include the 2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan and QX60 crossover, the 2013-14 Pathfinder SUV, Leaf electric car and Sentra compact, according to the statement.

Nissan said on Sept. 26 it would recall 910,000 vehicles globally, including the Serena minivan and X-Trail SUV, over an accelerator fault. That recall was part of the reason the company cut its profit forecast by 15 percent in the year ending March 31, it said.

USA - VW recalls 160,351 Passats in North America to fix low-beam headlights

Volkswagen Group said it is recalling about 160,351 Passat sedans in the United States and Canada because a low-beam headlight could become inoperable.
VW said it is possible on Passat cars from model years 2012 and 2013 that in instances where the hood is closed roughly or dropped from a certain height the resulting vibration or impact can cause a low-beam headlight bulb's connector to lose electrical contact. Losing the light could lead to reduced visibility, the company said.

Affected are about 150,201 cars sold in the United States and about 10,150 in Canada, VW said.
The automaker said a warning light in the instrument panel will immediately alert the driver if that happens. VW said there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
VW said it will notify owners to take the car to a dealer, where an improved bulb fitting will be installed free of charge.
Additionally, the hood bumpers will be inspected and adjusted or replaced as needed to prevent the hood from contacting the headlight assembly.
The company added that the Tennessee-built Passat is sold in other countries, but figures for the number of cars affected outside of North America were not immediately available.

USA - Chrysler recalls 18,092 Fiat 500L cars to fix potential shifter hazard.

Chrysler Group is recalling 18,092 Fiat 500L cars in the United States because drivers may not be able to shift out of park, according to documents filed with U.S. safety regulators.

Chrysler, a unit of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is recalling some 2014 models because in certain temperatures the transmission shift lever may have a delayed effect or no effect on selecting a gear, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
If there is no effect, the car will not shift out of park, and if there is a delayed effect the vehicle may move in an unintended or unexpected direction, increasing the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA documents.
As of Feb. 20, Chrysler was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem, according to the NHTSA documents.
Dealers will replace the shifter module or update the shifter software as needed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in April.

USA - RECALL: 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Mitsubishi is recalling certain 2013 Outlander Sport SUVs because of a problem that may cause air bags to fail in the event of a crash.

Models affected by the recall were manufactured from July 20, 2012 through May 29, 2013. About 733 units are affected, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Mitsubishi will notify owners of the recall, although a specific timetable is not yet known. Once the recall begins, owners can take their cars to dealerships for a free inspection, and if necessary, a free repair of the wire. In the meantime, owners can contact Mitsubishi at (800) 222-0037. Owners can also receive recall information from the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline, available at (888) 327-4236. For online information on all recalls in the U.S., visit www.safercar.gov.

Source: NHTSA

The Mitsubishi recall affects models equipped with leather seats. During the installation process for the leather seat covers, workers may have improperly routed wiring for the driver side air bag. As a result of the error, drivers may accidentally damage the wiring by adjusting the height level on the power seats. The air bag warning light will come on, and if a crash occurs, the driver side air bag may not deploy.
