BMW group shows increase in Month and year to date.

  • 191,269 vehicles delivered, an increase of 3.0%
  • Year-to-date sales climb 5.3% to 448,200 vehicles
  • Solid gains in Asia and the Americas

Munich. The BMW Group sold more vehicles in March than in any other month in its history. The company sold a total of 191,269 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles in the past month, exceeding the previous all-time high in March last year (185,741 units/+3.0%). The company also achieved a new high for the first three months: Retail volumes for the year to the end of March increased by 5.3% to 448,200 units (prev. yr. 425,543 units).

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW: “The BMW Group achieved an all-time high in sales last month and the best first quarter in its history, despite the headwinds present in Europe. Sales of the BMW 3 Series have contributed strongly to that growth and we will soon be expanding our highly successful 3 Series range with the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. All in all, we are aiming for further growth in BMW Group worldwide sales in 2013.”

With worldwide sales of 159,195 vehicles (prev. yr.: 153,016/+4.0%) in March, more BMW brand vehicles were sold in a single month than ever before. Sales for the year to the end of March reached a record 381,404 vehicles (prev. yr. 356,562), an increase of 7.0% over the first three months of last year. The BMW 3 Series had an excellent first quarter with 109,279 vehicles delivered (prev. yr. 91,138/+19.9%). Growth in the first quarter was also driven by the BMW X1, with sales climbing 27.6% to 37,680 vehicles (prev. yr. 29,535). Sales of the BMW X3 and BMW X5 continued to be solid through to the end of March with 36,189 (prev. yr. 35,249/+2.7%)and 27,274 (prev. yr. 26,563/+2.7%) vehicles sold respectively. Sales of the BMW 6 Series increased by 32.7% to 6,174 vehicles compared with 4,651 last year.

A total of 31,763 MINI brand vehicles were delivered worldwide to customers in March (prev. yr. 32,422/-2.0%) and 66,154 (prev. yr. 68,211/-3.0%) vehicles were sold in the first quarter of 2013. The slight decrease in the first quarter is attributed to the four-week closure of the MINI Oxford plant for renovations at the beginning of the year. The all-new MINI Paceman, which was launched last month, is expected to boost momentum in global sales for the brand.

Rolls-Royce: Following record figures in 2012, Rolls-Royce motor cars delivered to customers in the first quarter were -16.6% (642) compared to the previous year. This is within the company’s planning cycle, as the manufacturing plant underwent rebalancing and preparations for the start of production of the new Rolls-Royce Wraith. Sales in March showed an increase of 2.6% (311) compared to the same period in 2012, underlining the company’s cautious optimism for another strong year in 2013.

BMW Motorrad exceeded the previous year’s figures in the first three months of the year, thus achieving the best first quarter result in its history. Sales rose 1.5% to 24,732 vehicles (prev. yr. 24,373). A total of 13,067 BMW motorcycles were delivered in March – an increase of 6.3% on the previous year (12,295).

The BMW Group made gains in many markets in the first three months. Solid first quarters in both the U.S. and China contributed to the increase in BMW Group worldwide sales. In the U.S., a record 78,957 vehicles were delivered, an increase of 4.3% over the same period in 2012 (75,729). From January to the end of March a record total of 86,070 vehicles were delivered to customers in Mainland China, an increase of 7.6% compared with the same period last year (prev. yr. 80,014). Other Asian markets, such as Japan (14,990/+7.2%) and South Korea (8,900/+16.9%) also reported solid gains in the first three months of the year. Strong growth was also reported by the Middle East markets, with 6,303 vehicles delivered (prev. yr. 4,936/+27.7%).

In the company’s home market of Germany, a total of 63,675 BMW Group vehicles were registered (prev. yr. 66,214/-3.8%) in the first quarter. Despite the headwinds in the market, the company managed to gain segment share and now leads the premium segment in Germany. In Russia, sales jumped by 21.1% in the first three months to a total of 9,377 vehicles (prev. yr. 7,743). In the whole region of Europe, the company reported a slight increase, with 207,128 vehicles sold in the period (prev. yr. 200,954/+3.1%).

In Between making furniture, Maserati has built the new Ghibli.

Maserati has released the first official images of its upcoming four-door sports executive saloon in advance of its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month.

The all-new Ghibli is set to break new ground for Maserati.

The Ghibli will have a sportier character compared to the larger Quattroporte, launched at the beginning of this year. The Ghibli will be available with two turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engines, an eight-speed automatic transmission and both rear-wheel drive and the new “Q4” all-wheel drive system.

Maserati diversifies into, well, have a look.......

Maserati and Zanotta present the Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta - a unique, exclusive project, previewed in Milan at the International Furniture Fair 2013, that is the result of the meeting of two stars of Italian style.

Created by the well-known designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, and produced in a limited edition, the new Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta is an article that encapsulates the spirit and values that the two brands have always expressed in their sector - exclusiveness, sophistication, comfort, refinement of materials, shapes and details, avant-garde design and a very high level of craftsmanship in the production.

The Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta, designed by Marco Tencone at the Centro Stile Maserati (Maserati Style Centre) under the direction of Lorenzo Ramaciotti, has been conceived as an homage to the new Maserati Quattroporte, with the ideal synthesis of luxury and sportiness, technology and craftsman quality. The Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta is equivalent to a compositional and creative virtuism of rare efficacy and value, marked by timeless elegance.

The designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, known for their ability to flank vast knowledge of the cultural roots of design with the needs of contemporary society, developed a project starting from the elegant shapes of the vehicle, enhancing its nature of a mobile lounge. The harmonious, dashing lines of the Maserati Quattroporte were analysed, broken down, reproduced and reinterpreted by the Palombas until the shape of the Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta emerged, opening the seat to enter a new dimension  making it the star of all time for its imagination, memory and thought. The trip, narrated by Maserati and Zanotta, is that of 'time in movement' in a very wide meaning of suspended imagery that lives on perceptions, suggestions, projections, memories and expectations. A dimension extended towards discovery but also to a more intimate reflection in which becoming aware and imagining the future path also means not forgetting the starting point. This is what the Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta intends to be - a product of absolute excellence, an opportunity to create a moment 'out of time', an itinerary of the senses that is deliberately renewed every time you sit in a Maserati or relax in one of the precious Zanotta armchairs. Because 'speed', as interpreted by Zanotta and Maserati, is 'thought in movement'.

Maserati and Zanotta are two brands that tell two great Italian stories - two different companies, which were both able to start from a local dimension to become international, remaining loyal to the original values due to their ability to create products which merit the successes and recognitions obtained.

THE PROJECT

recounted by designers Ludovica and Roberto Palomba

“The approach to this project was firstly sharing the values of Maserati and Zanotta - values like style, elegance, quality and performance.
We wanted this product to have a DNA corresponding to that of these companies, primarily great attention to design and quality. The Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta is an article that has a considerable component of craftsmanship and manual work; we imagined it almost as if it was ‘a unique piece’.
We took up the perspective image of a Maserati in the lines, retracing the fluid structure of the silhouette of the bonnet to give the mark of continuity.

The leather covering has a very natural feel; the inspiration for this coming from the softness of the gloves of racing car drivers in the past.
The Lounge Chair is an exclusive product and we wanted it to transmit a feeling of immediate quality. We didn’t want to design a simple car seat or an armchair that adapted to this use... Thinking of the ‘If…’ game, we asked ourselves, ‘If Maserati was an armchair, what would it be like?’ We sought a mediation point between these two worlds.”

SPECIFICATIONS

Base: Rods of black polished or chromed nickel-plated steel

Filling: High resistance polyurethane and DacronDu Pont padding

Internal covering: Irremovable in nylon

External covering: Quilted removable in Extra 99 Zanotta leather in dark grey with light grey border, light grey with mud-coloured border or mud with light grey border.

The processing of the leather covering is inspired by the old ‘capitonné’ technique created around 1800. This is one of the noblest techniques of the Italian craftsman tradition in furnishing and requires great manual ability for its execution. The technique was given a modern interpretation for the creation of the armchair, simplifying it for greater visual minimalism (there are no buttons) and to obtain an extremely soft and comfortable surface in contrast with the tension and rigidity of classic capitonné.

The Extra Zanotta leather used for the covering of the Maserati Lounge Chair by Zanotta epitomises the excellence of quality and naturalness in the leather for furnishings sector. It is obtained using the very highest quality raw hides. It is full-grain leather, dyed in the vat with pure aniline colorants, not finished, which acquires beauty with time. It gives a feeling of great naturalness to the touch. Marks or imperfections such as scars, veining and slight differences of grain and colour - always found in the skin of an animal - can’t and mustn’t be considered defects but features that prove and enhance the authenticity and naturalness of real leather.

Every hide is a ‘unique’ piece with advantages and disadvantages resulting from its origin - nature. These imperfections are usually more visible in better quality hides as they are not covered by pigments or polyurethane films, and are the mark of the absolute authenticity, naturalness and exclusivity of this leather.

Like all the products of the Zanotta Collection, the Lounge Chair was designed to satisfy the highest standards of quality, ergonomics, safety, resistance and duration in use in the furniture sector. In particular, with reference to the stability, static resistance and fatigue resistance requirements, the armchair passed the tests set out by the International Organisation for Standardisation regulations ISO7170 and ISO7173 with full marks.

“Ford has now completely transformed its commercial vehicle line-up, with four all-new, class-leading Transits for European customers,” said Barb Samardzich, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe. “With the all-new Transit range, we expect sales to grow to 400,000 units per year by 2016, well over 50 per cent more than we sell today.”

The Transit Courier goes on sale in spring 2014, when all four new Transit models will be available in European showrooms. The line-up will also include the spacious new high-roof version of the Transit Custom that is also revealed for the first time in Birmingham.

Ford’s renewed commercial vehicle range is completed by the new Fiesta Van and new Ranger, winner of the International Pickup Award 2013, joining the Transits on the Birmingham stand.

All-new Transit Courier

The all-new Transit Courier marks a significant development for the Transit range, expanding the nameplate into the compact van segment for the first time.

Based on Ford’s global B-segment platform, the Transit Courier delivers class-leading load volume of 2.3m3 (SAE) with standard full bulkhead within an overall length of 4.16 metres, and offers the agile handling and manoeuvrability of a compact vehicle.

The load compartment offers best-in-class features including:

  • longest load length at floor level of 1.62 metres
  • greatest access width through sliding rear side doors
  • full-height, full-width steel bulkhead (glazed or unglazed), fully compliant with DIN and ISO standards for load restraints
  • optional folding mesh bulkhead and fold-dive passenger seat to accommodate extended length items, with class-leading load length of 2.59 metres
  • six cargo tie-down points (DIN and ISO compliant), including four rear side-mounted points to avoid obstruction of the floor area
  • multiple pre-installed bodyside fixing points to mount racking or framework
  • optional ultra-bright LED loadspace lighting

With a generous load volume and maximum payload capacity of 660kg, the Transit Courier can accommodate a wide variety of cargo and equipment, including a standard Euro pallet.

“With 10 per cent more load volume and floor area than its closest competitors, the all-new Transit Courier brings a new level of productivity to the compact van segment,” Samardzich said. “This is a stylish, practical and affordable new van that businesses will value for its agility and exceptionally low cost of ownership.”

The Transit Courier will be available with highly-efficient diesel and petrol engines that target best-in-class fuel economy, and offer Auto-Start-Stop on all units. Customers can choose between the Dagenham-built 1.5-litre 75PS and 1.6-litre 95PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engines, and the remarkable 1.0-litre 100PS EcoBoost petrol engine, the “International Engine of the Year” 2012.

Providing a stylish and professional appearance, the Transit Courier demonstrates the dynamic character of Ford’s global design language with its strong rising shoulder line, slim headlamps and high-mounted signature trapezoidal grille. Rugged bumpers and bodyside mouldings provide added protection and minimise repair costs.

The cabin offers an ideal mobile-office environment, with smart stowage including a “mega-centre” console capable of storing A4 documents and small laptops; overhead stowage; and a storage drawer under the driver’s seat. A device dock in the centre of the instrument panel enables occupants to store, mount and charge mobile devices including phones and satnavs.

The Transit Courier will also offer voice-activated in-car connectivity system, Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance, Rear View Camera, Easy Fuel, Speed Limiter and standard ESC (Electronic Stability Control); and a class-leading variety of safety features.

All-New Transit Connect

The stylish all-new Transit Connect van sets new standards for load-carrying ability, cost of ownership and dependability. Available in short-wheelbase (L1) and long-wheelbase (L2) versions, the Transit Connect offers a spacious and practical load area with total volumes of 3.0m3 and 3.7m3(SAE) and a maximum payload of up to 1,000kg. Ford offers Van, Double-Cab-in-Van and Kombi derivatives.

Smart design and engineering ensure the new Transit Connect delivers best-in-class load carrying ability. A load-through hatch in the bulkhead and fold-flat passenger seat enable long loads up to 3.0 metres (L1) and 3.4 metres (L2) to be safely carried in the vehicle. In addition, a multi-fold dual passenger seat now enables van models to carry up to three people in the cab.

The Kombi and Double-Cab-in-Van models offer seating for five, or seven in the L2 Kombi model, and deliver flexible rear seat configurations with a movable mesh bulkhead. The L2 model also offers a unique fold-flat seat capability that optimises loadspace from the front passenger seats rearwards and accommodates loads of up to 2.0 metres.

The Transit Connect targets best-in-class fuel efficiency offering an improvement of up to 30 per cent over the current model; as well as reduced cost of ownership through minimised maintenance and repair costs with extended service intervals.

The powertrain line-up includes the highly-efficient 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel with a choice of 75, 95 and 115PS, and the 1.0-litre 100PS EcoBoost petrol engine, as well as a version of the acclaimed 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that is available with a six-speed automatic transmission. Ford ECOnetic Technologies that help to minimise fuel consumption include Auto-Start-Stop and Active Grille Shutter.

Unlike many rivals which are tested like passenger cars, the all-new Transit Connect has been subjected to Ford’s ultra-stringent commercial vehicle testing and durability standards, covering millions of miles of arduous testing in laboratories, at proving grounds and on customer fleets.

The all-new model also builds on the Transit Connect’s reputation for outstanding security: the improved remote locking system now offers two channels for enhanced security and can be fully configured to the customer’s needs, while anti-tamper shielding of the door lock latches prevents destruction of the locks by drilling or chiselling.

The new model offers a stylish cockpit with car-like design and craftsmanship, smart stowage solutions, and the latest Ford driver assistance features and interior technologies. Transit Connect is the first in its class to offer Active City Stop and Tyre Pressure Monitor, and features Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance. Deliveries are due to start by the end of 2013.

All-New Transit Custom

The all-new one-tonne Transit Custom “International Van of the Year 2013” now on sale across Europe is the first vehicle in its segment to achieve a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating. Now Ford is adding a spacious new high-roof version which makes its global debut in Birmingham.

This provides customers with an extra 370mm of height in the load compartment, increasing the distance from floor to roof to 1.78 metres. The high roof option is available on both SWB (L1) and LWB (L2) versions to create a class-leading maximum load volume of 8.3m3 on the larger model. Customers can specify the high-roof with the same wide range of gross vehicle weight and powertrain options as the standard roof model, and in van and kombi bodystyles. The high-roof model will be available for customer delivery in the last quarter of 2013.

The all-new Transit Custom offers class-leading load-carrying ability, and innovative loadspace features including a load-through hatch in the bulkhead for extra-long items, and the integrated roof rack available for the low roof versions which can be folded away when not in use for better fuel economy while keeping overall vehicle height under two metres (except 330 GVM models).

Class-leading fuel economy with CO2 emissions from 162g/km* for the ECOnetic versions is delivered by the improved 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel with Auto-Start-Stop, while cost-of-ownership is further minimised by the longest service intervals in the class at two years/30,000 miles.

The Transit Custom delivers advanced Ford vehicle technologies including SYNC, Rear View Camera, Acceleration Control, Auto High Beam and Driver Alert. Two technology features – Lane Keeping Alert and SYNC Emergency Assistance – have been awarded Euro NCAP Advanced rewards, a first for a vehicle in this class.

All-New Transit

The largest of the next-generation Transit line-up, the all-new Ford Transit two-tonne model is scheduled for European launch in spring 2014 to bring a new level of capability and versatility to the medium commercial van market, with a comprehensive range of body styles and derivatives including Van, Double Cab-in-Van (DCiV), Kombi, and Bus models, plus single and double Chassis Cab and Chassis Cowl versions.

Vans are available in three different lengths and two different roof heights with multiple gross vehicle mass options of up to 4.7 tonnes. The purposeful, modern exterior design conceals a load area that meets distribution industry requirements and maintains its impressive payload capability. Innovative loadspace features make operator usage easier and more secure.

Compared to the outgoing Transit, Ford has increased load volume by around 10 per cent model-for-model, with the largest “Jumbo” van now capable of swallowing up to 15.1m3 of cargo. The all-new SuperJumbo Chassis Cab will accommodate 5m floats or box bodies.

The all-new Transit delivers minimised maintenance, repair and insurance costs, and targets best-in-class fuel economy. The latest 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel is offered with 100, 125, and 155PS power ratings, and a standard six-speed manual transmission. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions will be available.

An all-new interior, with a stylish and functional instrument panel, incorporates a range of smart stowage solutions. The cabin is significantly more spacious than the outgoing model, with increased shoulder room, head clearance and visibility, plus a more comfortable driving position with a fully-adjustable steering column. A wide variety of advanced technologies can also be specified, including the Ford SYNC with Emergency Assistance, Rear View Camera, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keeping Alert.

Alongside the Transit Custom and Transit Connect models, the all-new Transit has been subjected to Ford’s ultra-stringent global commercial vehicle testing and durability standards, covering millions of miles of arduous testing in laboratories, at proving grounds and on customer fleets all around the world. This is even more significant with the new model, as for the first time ever the all-new Transit two-tonne derivative will be sold in the North American market where it will eventually take over from the best-selling Ford E-Series range.

Yet another concept from Renault, Will this make it to production.

  • Renault and British designer Ross Lovegrove today took the wraps off Twin’Z. This concept car is the fruit of their close collaboration and brings together two worlds where Design plays an important role: the world of furniture and that of the automobile.
  • As the ‘Play’ petal of Renault Design’s life-cycle ‘flower’, Twin’Z is the latest concept car in the programme which sets out to illustrate Renault’s new design strategy through parallels with threshold phases of human existence. Twin’Z is a fun, modern,  artistic take on the city car which plays on emotions and excites the senses. It draws its inspiration from the heritage of some of the brand’s most emblematic models, such as the Renault 5 and Renault Twingo. The Twin’Z is an all-electric car with rear-wheel drive and a rear-mounted motor.
  • Renault invited British designer Ross Lovegrove to add some design flourishes and the result is an arresting blend of technology and refinement. Ross Lovegrove was given a free hand to imagine a cabin that is truly occupant-friendly. This project eloquently illustrates the many possible sources of inspiration that can drive Design and represents an original approach to the city car.
  • Ross Lovegrove’s personal vision of the automobile takes its inspiration from the world of nature, and the result combines an unprecedented play on light and organic forms to make Twin’Z an endearing, almost living object.

I.  When automotive Design meets the world of furniture

For once, Renault has chosen not to reveal a new concept car at a motor show. Instead, its choice of location stands out as a symbol of its interest in the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano, the centrepiece of the Design industry’s annual calendar, as well as evidence of the carmaker’s determination to reach out to an even wider audience by targeting those who are sensitive to Design. The aim was to break down the boundaries between the world of an object whose calling is to be in movement – the automobile – and that of furniture.

“Renault Design must remain attentive and open-minded at all times. We need to be attentive to new trends in order to stay ahead of the game, while an open-mind that embraces all sectors of activity is necessary to inspire innovation. There are numerous bridges between the work of Ross Lovegrove – which combines beauty and intelligence thanks to an approach inspired by the living, natural world – and the strategy we have been working on for three years now at Renault, producing designs that are sensuous, based on simple emotions and close to the public.”

Laurens van den Acker

“Twin’Z provided us with the ideal opportunity to place the process of automotive design under a different spotlight, a process which straddles the boundary between the world of the automobile and that of furniture. For this mission, we called on the creative input of one of today’s most talented designers, and the Milan Show provided us with the ideal setting in which to reveal our latest concept car.”

Twin’Z is an electric supermini. Thanks to its architecture, which features a rear-mounted motor and batteries located beneath the floor, it frees up exceptional cabin space and delivers high quality handling that makes it a delight to drive.

Twin’Z… A time to ‘Play’

Twin’Z is the fifth concept car to result from Renault’s design strategy which is founded on the notion of the human life cycle, and which is represented as a six-petalled flower. This strategy fits perfectly with the brand’s determination to accompany its customers during the key phases of their lives and in their individual aspirations thanks to the diversity of its range.

“Renault’s design strategy takes its inspiration from the human life cycle, focusing on notions such as ‘Love’, ‘Exploration’, ‘the Family’, ‘Work’, and now ‘Play’. And what better way to express the idea of ‘Play’ than by entering the enchanting world in which Ross’s thoughtful, beautiful and intelligently styled work comes to life. May it inspire you in the same way it inspired us.”

Laurens van den Acker

-   After DeZir, which, in 2010, embodied the experience of ‘love at first sight’ which is behind so many memorable stories…

-   After Captur, which stood for exploring the world as a couple…

-   After R-Space, which symbolised the founding of a family…

-   And after Frendzy, which represented the world of work…

…now is the time for ‘Play’, which is personified by Twin’Z and symbolised by the colour blue. The way Twin’Z plays with light opens up a whole new world of personalisation opportunities.

RENAULT x ROSS LOVEGROVE

After enlisting the services of Ross Lovegrove, Renault gave the celebrated expert in contemporary design a free hand to express his vision of the automobile, a vision which draws its inspiration from the world of nature and which is guided by a quest for a harmonious encounter between the automobile and its environment. Laurens van den Acker is sensitive to this refined, human approach which is inspired by the world of nature and the opportunities unleashed by the latest digital 3D modelling technologies.

‘Ross turns things inside out, upside down, challenges and inspires. He makes a hard car soft, a small car spacious, creates simplicity despite complexity, and turns a lifeless object into something that is alive.’ Laurens van den Acker

Ross Lovegrove’s approach drew Renault’s attention on three main accounts:

-   The exterior design of his sensuous, poetic creations.

-   His use of light and how it is projected.

-   His light, simple style and his work on fibres and textiles.

Ross Lovegrove’s team was tasked with providing the finishing details to Twin’Z’s bodywork (bumpers, lights, grilles, LED roofscape, wheels) which was based on a design produced by Renault Design. His studio was also responsible for designing the interior, including the choice of colours and materials, in conjunction with Renault.

At Renault, the project was overseen by Laurens van den Acker, Axel Breun (Concept Car Design Director) and Raphaël Linari (Designer).

Renault and Ross Lovegrove expressed their ideas using ultramodern digital design tools in order to carry over elements of formal design language that have their source in nature and biological structures to the automobile.

II.  Twin’Z – Technology and refinement

Twin’Z underpins Renault’s creative legitimacy which is founded on an entirely fresh approach, one fruit of which is this fun and modern city car concept. It takes its inspiration as much from the heritage of the first-generation Twingo as it does from that of the Renault 5, two small cars which broke new ground in ways that truly marked their time. Twin’Z takes us into a new dimension thanks to its dematerialised interior which combines simplicity with refined details and technology, backed up by the sophistication of its digital systems.

Twin’Z’s forms and stance are key influences in the overall impression it exudes. Although only 3.62 metres in length, Twin’Z’s proportions, high waistline  and the way it sits squarely on its 18” wheels, suggest robustness, reassuring protection and quality.

Its all-electric, rear-wheel drive architecture enabled the wheels to be pushed out to the car’s extreme corners to provide it with a solid grounding and large platform. This also gave the car a unique signature and outstanding cabin space in relation to its compact footprint.

At the same time, Twin’Z’s taut lines convey a sense of strength and safety. The bodywork was enhanced by Lovegrove Studio thanks to an approach that blended refinement and technology.

Blue is the colour…

Twin’Z’s striking blue livery pays tribute to the 20th century French painter Yves Klein. The satin finish gives a pure skin to the body which appears to be coated, almost anodised, rather than painted, suggesting that the pigmentation is inside the body and not applied. The soft clear-coat finish produces a velvet-like feel, while a certain iridescence lifts the car’s ‘electro-natural’ appearance.

“It echoes France’s cultural heritage while also mirroring the virtues of our planet. After all, isn’t the Earth blue when seen from space?” Ross Lovegrove

The grille design creates a vortex effect which channels air flow and minimises turbulence to optimise Twin’Z’s aerodynamic performance. The same motif has been embossed into the rear bumper as an echo of the lighting signature.

Twin’Z’s front and rear doors are hinged at the front and rear respectively and open electrically. The resulting absence of a central pillar allows the entire cabin to be revealed to the eye and frees up space to facilitate ingress. This arrangement, which opens up the car’s interior to the outside world, is not only ergonomic but also enables this compact car to break free from convention. As an object, Twin’Z is both precious and high-tech, and this is apparent in the touch-sensitive buttons employed to open the electric doors.

The wheels and tyres have been designed as a single entity. The wheels themselves feature a glowing green finish and their design is based on intelligent growth structures inspired by nature. The solid central core splits into slender branches which strike out towards the rim. The tyres, which were developed specifically by Michelin, continue this pattern to provide a unity between the two functions. As a consequence, the wheel is perceived as a whole rather than a simple juxtaposition of distinct elements. This design was made possible by parametric modelling and 3D printing in order to achieve an eye-pleasing structural unity.

A fascinating play on light that symbolises energy

Twin’Z’s all-LED lighting allows controlled light patterns to be obtained and emphasises the car’s lighting signature. The headlight assembly has been reduced to its graphic intent using the minimum of lines to communicate a positive, alert expression. Crowned by an eyelid, they provide Twin’Z with an optimistic lift. Meanwhile, the daytime running lights are technological gems which form a structure of strips redolent of an iris. In addition to contributing to the front end’s anthropomorphic feel, they bestow Twin’Z with a near-humanlike gaze.

A sequence of LEDs also extends from the grille to the rear bumper via the roof. A pattern of light originates from the Renault lozenge badge and flows towards the head lights before climbing up over the windscreen pillars, along the roofline and then back down to the rear bumper. This light path creates a magical effect which appears to bring Twin’Z alive.

The glass roof is designed in layers and incorporates an array of LEDs which form animated patterns that expand the occupants’ experience. “Passengers are hooded in a technological envelope that bathes them in a light which responds to the energy and pulse of Twin’Z,” says Ross Lovegrove. “This roofscape heightens the sensation of space and blends seamlessly into the rear window.

The conventional door mirrors have been replaced by an integrated video camera that has been aerodynamically ‘liquified’ within the body. A crystal rear spoiler not only generates extra downforce but also completes the aesthetic flight of the car in a dynamic sense, creating visual lift and a sense of lightness.

The rear clusters have made way for LED lighting incorporated into the glass. This concept permits a host of new ideas. For example, when the driver presses on the brake pedal, the burst of the brake lights climbs gradually towards the roof, for enhanced visibility and safety.

The name of the car is picked out in gold letters on the rear window, while the ‘LOVEGROVE’ signature has been moulded into the bottom of the front doors.

III.  Twin’Z’s interior: from home to home

Twin’Z continues the tradition of compact, yet spacious, Renault city cars. Thanks to its original architecture, its interior is exceptionally roomy, despite its small footprint. The double floorpan has resulted in a high-up driving position, while the driver and passengers alike benefit from an excellent view of the road and surrounding environment.

The cabin is dematerialised and exudes an impression of simplicity that provides a sense of unity and space.

“The interior is not broken up into separate elements and all passengers feel very much part of the travelling experience. The rear seat backs have been integrated into the floor-pan to create space and a new, informal aesthetic.” Ross Lovegrove.

The rear-hinged rear doors and the ensuing absence of a B-pillar reveal a panoramic view of the cabin, creating a sense of purity and lightness:

-       The purity of the interior’s lines is picked out by a voluptuous path of light. These milled bi-colour lines circulate round the entire cabin to describe a flow of energy, lighting up the interior with a luminescent green that maps its topographical forms. They treat the cabin as a single landscape to heighten the impression of space.

-       The four lightweight seats have been rendered as small as possible, providing support whilst being lightweight and dematerialised. Their green frames appear to grow naturally from the floor and have been upholstered in a 3D woven, self-cushioning, lightweight blue textile which is both waterproof and flame-resistant, yet which still breathes. The seat frame is visible behind the weave to create an almost aerial feel. Meanwhile, LEDs have been embedded into the frame’s branches to pick out their forms and illuminate the interior.

The eye is drawn irresistibly to Twin’Z’s steering column, inviting you to climb behind the wheel. There is no dashboard, which means that front occupants enjoy exceptional room, as do the rear passengers, thereby ensuring that all the occupants benefit from the same experience.

Use of HMIs (Human Machine Interfaces) has been minimised, too, with the conventional dashboard making way for a single tablet with a touchscreen display that is mounted on a centrally-positioned post. Much like a home automation system, the tablet takes care of everything, from the vehicle’s systems (heater, seat adjustment, lights activation, control of the roof) to the GPS guidance system and in-car connectivity. A smartphone located in the driver’s line of sight display’s the vehicle’s speed, range-related information and the principal warning lights.

Ross Lovegrove’s vision of the automobile: “All in one”

“For me, the car is just a big product. But the magic for the designer is having the potential firstly to concentrate on working within the boundaries of a single ‘project’, then secondly to be able to design the furniture, lighting and electronics. I adopted a coordinated approach to both the inside and outside to ensure that Twin’Z read as one object and benefited from the same artistic mind-set founded on digitising and electrifying the car.

“The car has become a symbol of our progress and civilization; an icon of our technocracy and our ability to transform materials into objects of great precision and physical presence.

“The use of composites and recycled materials opens up new opportunities to combine textures and new skin expressions. Mechanical ‘hard' aesthetics are making way for the biological principles of ‘soft’ aesthetics.

“As a consequence, designing a car no longer consists merely in improving the look and feel of the drive experience. It involves harnessing a new attitude towards how we integrate vehicles into everyday life by reducing harmful emissions, dematerialising the car’s physicality to achieve lightness, and maximising not only its footprint but also, and above all, its efficiency and intelligence.

“That is what I wanted to achieve through this project.

“Thanks to advances in digital modelling, the frontier between dream and reality is becoming increasingly hazy. It is now possible to create objects which feature a strong design yet which still meet the needs of consumers.

“From the start, the intention was to build on the heritage of luxury and grace associated with France and to express it in a modern way, while at the same time creating a link between Renault’s past, present and future.” Ross Lovegrove

Audi continues the trend of increased sale, not only in the UK but overall worldwide.

  • Deliveries worldwide at around 147,700 units in March, up 3.0 percent
  • UK cumulative sales up 9.7 per cent to 39,242 cars – March sales up 8.0 per cent to 24,913 cars
  • Record first quarter also in the United States and China
  • Sales chief Luca de Meo: “Successful start for the A3 Sportback”

AUDI AG has enjoyed the strongest first quarter in its history: With worldwide deliveries reaching around 369,500 units for January through to March, the company improved on the prior-year quarter by 6.8 per cent.

In this period, the automotive manufacturer achieved growth in all of its three main sales regions – Europe, Asia and North America. Unit sales in March played a major role in this respect. Audi handed over around 147,700 cars to customers – 3.0 per cent more than one year earlier. This made the past month the strongest March ever for the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer.

“Building on the first quarter’s record deliveries, we want to continue this positive sales trend over the next months, too,” says Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. “The new A3 Sportback will also contribute to this goal. It was successfully introduced in the first markets in February and we are very pleased with the response from the dealerships.”

The A1 Sportback, the A4 family and the SUV models in particular provided a further boost in the first quarter of 2013. Worldwide sales of the compact SUV Q3 gained 58.2 per cent year on year, climbing to around 28,550 units, while the Q5 grew by 15.6 per cent to some 56,350 units.

These models also strengthened the Ingolstadt carmaker’s business in the European market. Despite the challenging economic environment, Audi achieved a slight increase in deliveries in Europe compared with the first quarter of 2012. Around 187,600 cars (+0.7%) were handed over to their new owners.

In Germany, the sales total for the month of March (24,701 units) was slightly down by 1.7 per cent on the previous year. Over the first three months of the year,Audi reported 59,116 cars sold on its home market, representing a growth rate of 2.0 percent. The most important model remained the A4 Avant. 11,077 customers were handed the keys to their new midsize car between January and March.

Another March sales boost for the UK

Also, in its second-largest market in Europe the company ended the quarter on a positive note compared to the previous year. In the UK, total sales climbed 9.7 per cent to 39,242 units, and March results in particular also showed growth, with Audi exceeding the strong prior-year month yet again by 8.0 per cent (24,913 units).

The markets in Eastern Europe continued to serve up steady growth between January and March (around 14,000 units, +9.1%). In Russia, total deliveries of 8,278 units equated to growth of 15.4 per cent. There, the most popular Audi models are the Q3 and Q5. These two SUV models accounted for 48 percent of Audi sales in Russia in the first quarter.

The market conditions remained tight in Southern Europe. In Italy, Audi’s unit sales decreased by 6.4 per cent to 12,096 units in the first three months of 2013, and in France by 8.4 per cent to 14,542 units. In Spain however, deliveries increased slightly by 0.6 per cent on the prior-year quarter, with 10,897 cars sold.

AUDI AG ended the first quarter with a record-breaking start to the year in the United States, too. The success story of the previous months continued in March. Demand for the Ingolstadt manufacturer’s models climbed 14.4 per cent to 13,253 cars. In total, Audi delivered 34,186 cars in the United States in the first three months, a gain of 16.0 per cent. Growth was particularly driven by the Q5 and Q7 SUV models, which grew by 37.3 per cent and 48.4 per cent respectively.

The company’s flagship model also gained considerably - sales of the A8 rose by 37.3 per cent in the first quarter. The model’s diesel version will be appearing in April, signalling the next step in Audi’s successful TDI drive in the US. The A8 TDI will be joined by diesel versions of the A6, A7 and Q5 over the course of 2013.

Further countries in the Americas enjoyed double-digit growth in first-quarter deliveries,  too. In Mexico, for instance, Audi grew by 48.6 per cent to 2,609 units and in Brazil by 11.1 percent to 1,157 units.

China: 100,000 cars in just three months

In Audi’s biggest sales market, in China, the four rings exceeded the threshold of 100,000 units after only three months for the first time in the brand’s 25 years in that market. In the first quarter, 102,810 cars were handed over to Audi customers, a gain of 14.2 percent. In March, the rise was at 10.7 percent to 34,864 units.

Between January and March, the A6 L further underscored its position as the most  successful business saloon in the Chinese premium segment. Sales of 36,489 units represent an increase of 36.7 per cent. In the coming months, two important market launches will further boost Audi’s business in China. The locally produced Q3 will shortly be arriving at the dealerships, followed soon afterwards by the new generation of the Q5.

Audi also enjoyed a strong first quarter in the entire Asia-Pacific region with around 124,200 cars delivered and a growth rate of 14.9 per cent. Various markets contributed to this progress, like South Korea, where sales were up 31.1 per cent. In Japan, sales grew by 17.4 per cent between January and March, while sales in India advanced by 15.3 per cent.

Peugeot continue to push ahead with increased sales for Q1

  • Peugeot UK sales rose (by 6.3%) in Q1 continuing growth for the Brand with 208 in the Top Ten Best Sellers listing
  • Deliveries for the new 208 exceed 30,000 with XY and GTi models arriving in weeks
  • 208 order take remains high as strong demand for this award-winning car continues

The first quarter of 2013 delivered continuous growth for Peugeot UK with the new 208 leading the appeal for the Brand’s stylish products, with sales up 6.3% when compared to the same period in 2012. The UK new car buyer is not only looking for stylish products that offer great value but also demands vehicles with low CO2 emissions and Peugeot is more than able to deliver. The PSA Peugeot Citroën Group was once again CO2 market leader in 2012 with an average of just 122.5g/km.

Peugeot has an invigorated product range, led by the 208, with the imminent arrival of the ‘top-of-the-range’ and highly-equipped ‘posh XY’ and the ‘performance GTi’ models due in the UK soon. The other top selling models in the range – the compact 107, 308 hatchback, and 3008 Crossover – also remain very popular with customers.

Peugeot LCV’s seven-year sales growth continues - from 4.8% in 2007 to 7.8% and in the first quarter of 2013 rising by 6.5%. The Peugeot Partner is the best-selling small van in the UK (while the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group leads van sales in Europe).

Newest Transit subjected to multitude of durability tests before launch

  • Ford subjects all-new Transit Custom – the 2013 International Van of the Year – to its most comprehensive ever vehicle testing regime; durability tests simulate 10 extremely punishing years of ownership in six months
  • More than 150 professional test drivers, plus customer fleet drivers and Ford engineers, cover the equivalent of three million miles, through test conditions including corrosive salt- and mud-baths and temperatures ranging from 40degC to -40degC
  • Ford Transit Custom tows a loaded trailer for six months non-stop; is driven continuously at maximum speed for two months; and executes a month of continuous figures of eight; testing directly leads to more than 100 significant product improvements

Ford’s Transit engineers are well-known for their passion for commercial vehicles. In the case of the all-new Ford Transit Custom one-tonne van it was more like tough love.

More than 150 professional test drivers, plus customer fleet drivers and Ford engineers, put the Ford Transit Custom through a punishing regime, covering the equivalent of three million miles. Ford Transit Custom tests included marathon non-stop driving tests to simulate an extremely demanding 10-year lifecycle in just six months, along with extreme climate testing and corrosive salt- and mud-baths.

“I don’t think many customers would believe what this vehicle has been through,” said Barry Gale, commercial vehicles chief engineer, Ford of Europe. “We inflict the worst possible treatment that a van could endure, and we’re only satisfied when our new vehicle comes through with flying colours – just as the Transit Custom has done.”

Ford analysed data from real-world Transit use gathered from more than 600 vehicles, over six million miles, in seven markets around the world; that helped inform worst-case usage durability targets based on a 10-year, 150,000-mile lifecycle.

Accelerated durability testing took place at Ford’s Lommel proving ground in Belgium, scene of more than 30 separate vehicle tests. These included the “trailer tow general durability” test, one of the ordeals that condenses an extremely tough 10-year lifecycle into just six months.

Examples of the extreme challenges included:

  • Autobahnspeed: maintaining maximum speed for two months non-stop
  • Figure Eight: executing figures-of-eight non-stop for one month
  • Chassis strength: crashing into a 140mm kerb at more than 35mph
  • Potholes and bumps: completing a potholed and bumpy course at speeds of up to 45mph – more than 5,000 times
  • Corrosion resistance: driving over rough gravel roads, through salt- and mud-baths, and soaking in high-humidity chambers – for 12 weeks

During its development, Ford Transit Custom prototypes also endured the toughest “real–world” conditions, surviving the extremes of 40degC heat in Dubai and -40degC biting cold in Finland, plus high-mileage road testing in the hands of professional fleet drivers.

In the test labs, Ford subjected the all-new 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engine – powering the all-new Transit Custom – to 46 days of continuous high-load urban driving on specialised rigs, as part of tens of thousands of hours of engine testing. Component test rigs simulating real-world punishment can prove-out a full 10-year vehicle lifecycle in as little as 30 days.

Ford has engineered more than 100 significant improvements as a direct result of its testing regime. These include the redesign and strengthening of the engine mount brackets and body rocker panels. The same regime will deliver similar benefits to the all-new Ford Transit and Ford Transit Connect models due for launch by 2014.

“Pushing the van to the limit and beyond helps us to deliver a stronger, more robust product. This translates directly into every-day reliability for the customer, however tough their working environment,” added Gale.

The all-new Ford Transit Custom is the first vehicle in its segment to achieve a maximum five-star rating from independent vehicle safety organisation Euro NCAP, and since launch has sold more than 2,000 units in the UK.

Volvo sees sales tumble worldwide in March, and for the first quarter

Volvo Car Group reports global retail sales of 40,576 cars for the month of March. For the first quarter of 2013 retail sales were down 7.6 per cent. The Volvo XC60 model had its best first quarter ever. The new Volvo V40 was the second best-selling Volvo model.

In Sweden, Volvo continued to outperform the market and Volvo has four models on the top-ten list of best-selling car models. China was Volvo Car Group's third biggest market in March with 5,061 sold cars, marking one of the best sales months ever. Sales in China continued to build momentum based upon strong demand for Volvo's 60-Series.

Retail sales in the United States in March amounted to 5,365 cars. The S60 and XC60 models continue to lead individual carline sales in the USA.

European markets struggled with weak consumer demand following the weak economic situation. The total car market in Europe as well as sales of Volvo cars declined in March and the first quarter. The new Volvo V40 is however performing very well, with the UK and the Netherlands representing the two biggest markets for this model. The UK was also Volvo's biggest market in March with 5,719 unit sales whereof more than 2,000 sales were from the V40 and V40 Cross Country models.

The Volvo XC60 was the best-selling model in March with 9,797 sold cars (2012: 10,471), followed by the Volvo V40 for which deliveries reached 7,656 cars (new model). Including the Cross Country version, the V40 reached 9,314 sold cars. The third best-selling model was the Volvo S60 with 6,390 cars (7,339). Historical sales figures by model can be found in the Sales Volume section of the Global Newsroom.

Ferrari's 2 drivers headed to Maranello before flying to Shanghai.

With a few days to go before they head off for Shanghai and the third round of the Formula 1 World Championship, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were in Maranello for a busy programme of sports, technical and promotional activity. Fernando was there for two days and Felipe for one and the main purpose of their visit was to catch up with their own group of engineers. They also rounded off their preparation for China with a stint in the simulator. The two drivers also had a meeting with Team Principal Stefano Domenicali, for a final overview of the race in Shanghai, before they fly off there this weekend.

Alonso then turned his attention to another activity, working on fine tuning the new LaFerrari road car, a project the Spaniard is particularly keen on. Over the past few months he has worked on the driving position, the location of the controls and on the car’s handling on track, which he was able to experience yesterday, when the sun came out at Fiorano.

Today, before doing some physical tests, he also went round the factory, visiting various departments within the Gestione Industriale, including the Foundry, where heads, cylinders and blocks are produced, as well as the Paint Shop where the bodies are painted prior to going onto the assembly line. The Spaniard got a warm welcome and a round of applause, typical of the historic links that have always bound those who work on the road cars with their colleagues in the Scuderia. “I am always happy to spend a few days in Maranello,” commented Fernando. “Apart from working on the car and being in close contact with the team, sometimes I'm able to see some of the production departments which are the heart of the company.

This time I met up with people who are never in the limelight, but they have an incredible love for their work. I think that everyone, at least once in their life, should be able to experience a visit to these places and meet these people. It was nice to shake their hands and see the passion in their eyes. It gives me even more motivation and makes me even prouder to be part of the Ferrari family.”

Mercedes AMG Petronas preview of Shanghai Grand Prix

  • The Formula One season resumes next week with the third round, the 2013 UBS Chinese Grand Prix, taking place at the 5.451 km Shanghai International Circuit, located 40 kms outside of the city. This year’s race will be the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Grand Prix which made its debut during the 2004 season.
  • 'Shanghai specialist' Nico has led 78 of a total of 168 laps (46%) in the past three years in China
  • Nico and Lewis have won the last two Chinese Grands Prix in 2012 and 2011 respectively
  • Mercedes-Benz is the most successful engine manufacturer in China, with four wins in the past five races
  • Shanghai has a medium Safety Car risk, with deployments in one third of the nine races so far

Nico Rosberg
I travel to China next week with very good memories from winning my first Formula One race in Shanghai last year, and having led the race there for the past three years. I enjoy the Shanghai track a great deal and I have a positive feeling going there with the car that we have at the moment. The team have been working very hard to develop our car since returning from Malaysia and I will be at the factory on Monday to complete my preparations in the simulator for the next two races. We’ve had a strong start to the season and I’m confident that we can keep pushing and hopefully score some good results in China and Bahrain.

Lewis Hamilton
I’m looking forward to getting to China next week and going racing again; it feels like a long time since Malaysia! My first two races with my new team have been a great experience and everyone has made me feel so welcome. We’ve had a better start than we expected and to have finished in fifth and third places so far is really positive. I know there is much more to come so we will keep working hard and pushing the development of the car. I’ll be at the factory this weekend and look forward to hearing about the work that’s gone on in the last couple of weeks and the upgrades that we will take to China.

Ross Brawn
The Chinese Grand Prix of course holds great memories following the first win for Nico and our Silver Arrows team in Shanghai last year. That win was an extremely proud occasion for us all and certainly one that we hope to emulate in the future. Our season has started well, perhaps better than we expected, however we’re fully aware that there is still a gap to close and that we must keep up the pace of development. A lot of hard work has taken place at our factories over the last two weeks to do just that and I look forward to seeing how that translates to track performance. The Chinese Grand Prix race is well established now in its tenth year and it’s an important market for both Formula One and Mercedes-Benz. The circuit itself is challenging with fast curves, tight corners and two hairpins. The layout requires good straightline speed, braking stability and traction, and the temperatures are likely to be cooler than we have experienced in the first two race weekends.

Toto Wolff
One year on from Nico’s win, a lot of people will be asking whether this is something our team can repeat in 2013. But like they say, yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games, and that’s definitely true for us. We start again from zero this year and need to work hard to adapt the car to suit the circuit and the tyre compounds we have available, in the conditions that we find on track next weekend. Then we will see where we stand relative to the competition. We have made a solid start to the season in the first two races with Nico and Lewis both performing at a very high and equal level. The development race will be critical this season so we have more new parts planned for China. Our aim has to be to improve on our good start to the season and continue scoring good points in both championships.

  • Advanced route planning allows owners to send satnav instructions from their smartphone or laptop to their car
  • Features striking new design package including 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Sits above existing Acenta Premium and will be the best-selling Juke in the range

Nissan has added to the appeal of its sector-busting crossover, the Juke, with the arrival of a gadget-laden, design-focused new model. On sale now priced from £16,295, the Juke n-tec delivers even more style, higher equipment levels and an enhanced Nissan Connect infotainment system featuring remote connectivity as standard.

Based on the existing Acenta Premium model, the new Juke n-tec adds a striking new look. Riding on dramatic 18-inch black and silver n-tec alloy wheels wrapped in 225/45 tyres it features gloss black B-pillars and door mirrors and black bezels for the bonnet light strips. On the inside, a gloss black centre console and gloss black door trim finishers complete the visual changes.

But the star of the show is the Juke’s advanced range of in-car technology. Taking centre stage is the new generation Nissan Connect system, which is fitted as standard to all n-tec models. Controlled via a large 5.8-inch colour touchscreen, Nissan Connect integrates the Juke's satellite navigation system with Bluetooth connectivity for mobile phones and MP3 players. The new version also incorporates Google® Send-To-Car technology that allows owners to plan and send their route to the car before they leave the house. In addition to being more convenient, it's also safer - removing the temptation to plot a route when on the move.

The enhanced Nissan Connect system also features a number of innovative features designed to make life behind the wheel even easier. Drivers have complete access to Google®'s comprehensive Points of Interest (POI) database, and can also request weather forecasts, local fuel prices and flight information.

Nissan has also enhanced the navigation system interface, introducing a new ‘exit view' display with lane guidance, and an economy readout that ‘scores' the driver according to how economically they are driving. The smoother and more efficiently they drive, the higher the score.

Juke n-tec models also feature Nissan Dynamic Control System which allows the driver to select preferred driving dynamic modes, as well as change other functions such as climate control settings via the central touchscreen. Other standard equipment includes a reversing camera with colour display, automatic climate control and audio with Bluetooth Compatibility and USB port.

The n-tec is expected to be the best-selling model in the Juke line-up and will be available across all engine and drivetrain combinations. Buyers can choose from three engines - one diesel and two petrol - with the option of Nissan's ALL-MODE 4x4i intelligent four-wheel drive with rear axle torque vectoring and Nissan's XTRONIC M-CVT transmission when ordered with the advanced 1.6-litre DIG-T engine. The latter also gets a black interior headliner and a dual exit exhaust finisher to further mark it out.

The Juke n-tec joins the line-up at an exciting time. In the UK, the Sunderland-built crossover is Nissan’s second most popular model behind the Qashqai with 28,862 cars sold in 2012, up from 21,900 in 2011. Since its launch in 2010, more than 290,000 Jukes have been sold across Europe, with the figure for 2012 hitting a record-breaking 140,000 units. More than 500,000 Jukes have been sold worldwide since launch.
