The latest batch of four cars that underwent testing have all received the full five star Euro NCAP rating.

The safety ratings of four new cars are published by Euro NCAP today: the Kia Niro, Renault Scenic, Subaru Levorg and the Toyota Hilux.

The Renault Scenic and the Subaru Levorg, both equipped as standard with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), achieved maximum five-star ratings.  Kia and Toyota opted for dual ratings for their cars, with AEB as part of an optional safety pack:  the Kia Niro gets four stars with standard equipment and five with the option pack*; and Toyota’s new Hilux gets a three-star rating with standard equipment and five with the pack**.
The Toyota Hilux and Kia Niro were tested under Euro NCAP’s new ‘Dual Rating’ system, which means that the default rating is based on standard safety equipment available throughout the range. Additional tests are done to determine what the result would be when an optional safety pack is fitted.

Euro NCAP Secretary General, Michiel van Ratingen, said, “It is always good to see safety equipment being fitted as standard, and Renault and Subaru deservedly get top safety ratings for their cars. The fact that Toyota are making advanced safety technologies available on pickups, even if only an option at this stage, shows that the Dual Rating scheme is a great way to encourage broader fitment of these systems across all types of vehicles.”

EURO NCAP - Jaguar takes a double award with both the new XE and XF saloons's getting the full Five Star awards.

The Jaguar XE and all-new Jaguar XF saloons have been awarded the maximum five star rating in Euro NCAP’s 2015 safety tests. XE and XF scored highly in every category – Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist – and are among the most highly-rated models in their respective segments.

As well as outstanding crash protection, the XE and XF also benefit from a range of active safety systems including Autonomous Emergency Braking (fitted as standard in Europe), which uses a forward-facing stereo camera to detect vehicles which could pose a threat of collision: the system can give the driver visual and audible warnings and automatically apply the brakes if a collision is deemed imminent.
“The XE and XF were engineered without compromise: we placed just as much focus on safety as we did on dynamics, performance, refinement and efficiency, and our stringent in-house standards far exceed the requirements of legislative and consumer tests.
“Everything from the aluminium alloys we developed for the body structures to the state-of-the-art stereo camera at the heart of the Autonomous Emergency Braking system has been painstakingly optimised to deliver world-class levels of safety.”
Kevin Stride, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar XE, XF, F-PACE
The XE and XF are developed from Jaguar’s Lightweight Aluminium Architecture: the inherently light yet stiff and strong body structures deliver exceptional occupant protection, further enhanced by driver and passenger airbags, side airbags and curtain airbags. In the event of an impact with pedestrians, deployable bonnets help to mitigate serious injuries.
Both models offer a full suite of active safety technologies and advanced driver assistance systems* including Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control, Emergency Brake Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing, Reverse Traffic Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Cruise Control.
Additional features offered in the XF – and which will be offered in the 2017 Model Year XE – include Lane Keep Assist, Driver Condition Monitor and Adaptive Speed Limiter.

EURO NCAP - The All-New Infiniti Q30 hatchback also achieves the full five star Euro Ncap award.

  • New Infiniti Q30 achieves maximum five-stars safety rating
  • Top scores in all four testing areas
Rolle – The all-new Infiniti Q30 has received the maximum five-star rating by independent vehicle safety organization, Euro NCAP.
The Euro NCAP scoring system considers various aspects of vehicle safety, such as occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist which is the availability and effectiveness of safety systems and driver aids.

As well as achieving the maximum five stars, the Infiniti Q30 gained top scores in each of these four testing categories.
Roland Krueger, President, Infiniti Motor Company, commented: “The Q30 offers a comprehensive technology package that enhances the car’s driving experience while providing maximum safety to all occupants. The five-star rating from Euro NCAP is testament to Infiniti’s advanced safety approach.”
Occupant protection scored highly in the rigorous test program with an 84 per cent rating for adult safety. As well as a driver knee airbag, the Q30 has driver-, passenger-, front hip-thorax side and front-to-rear curtain airbags.
Designed and engineered to offer the best possible levels of protection for children, an automated system in the front passenger seat will turn off the front passenger airbag when someone fits a rearward facing child seat.
For Pedestrian Protection, the Q30 scored 91 per cent, a score which is determined from tests to the most important vehicle front-end structures, such as the bonnet and windshield, the bonnet leading edge and the bumper. The Q30 is equipped with a sensor that detects a pedestrian’s legs contact with the bumper and causes the hood to pop up to give more clearance between the hood surface and the hard parts of the engine to protect pedestrians.
An 81 per cent score in the Safety Assist category was due to the latest safety technologies fitted to the Q30 as part of Infiniti’s acclaimed Safety Shield system. They include Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Alert.

The 2016 All-New Audi A4 gets the full five star award from EURO NCAP.

  • Top score in Euro NCAP for active and passive safety
  • Audi pre sense city with emergency braking function standard
  • The new Audi A4 is among the safest cars in its field of competitors. The European consortium Euro NCAP has awarded it the top score of five stars for adult and child safety as well as for pedestrian protection.
It also gave the Audi A4 the “Euro NCAP advanced” special award for its standard-fit multi-collision brake assist system and for the Audi pre sense basic system, which is available as an option.

Multi-collision brake assist automatically brakes the Audi in the event of an accident, thus reducing the danger of skidding as well as the risk of further collisions. Audi pre sense basic tightens the seat belt in hazardous situations leading up to a collision, and closes the windows and sunroof.
Another key element of integral safety in the Audi A4 is the standard-fit assistance system Audi pre sense city – an anticipatory warning and emergency braking function. At speeds of up to 85 km/h (52.8 mph), the system checks whether there are other vehicles or pedestrians in the path of the car.
If there is the risk of a collision it warns the driver according to a multi-stage concept: first visually and acoustically, then by a jolt of the brakes. Finally it triggers an automatic emergency brake application if need be.
There is also an array of other assistance systems to enhance safety in the Audi A4. These include collision avoidance assist, turn assist and the exit warning.
While collision avoidance assist helps the driver to drive around an obstacle, turn assist monitors oncoming traffic when turning across the flow of traffic at low speed. In a dangerous situation, it brakes the A4 to a complete stop, if necessary, to prevent a turn when there is oncoming traffic.
The exit warning minimizes the risk of injury when opening the doors. LEDs that light up red warn the occupants not to open the doors when other road users are approaching from behind.
Established in 1997, the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) investigates the crash performance of new car models. In 2015 the consortium made the requirements for the front and side impact collision tests even tougher in order to reflect actual accident scenarios even more accurately.

Skoda achieves highest score in it's class in the Euro Ncap 2014 Crash Tests.

  • The Å KODA Fabia achieved the highest score in its class in the 2014 Euro NCAP crash tests, and was the only one of 14 small cars tested to get five stars
  • Outstanding passenger protection for adults and children
  • Innovative safety systems, six airbags fitted as standard
  • Å KODA model range safer than ever
The new Å KODA Fabia is the safest small car according to the latest Euro NCAP crash tests. Back in November 2014, the new Å KODA model achieved the highest score in its segment, becoming the only one of 14 small cars to get five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The Euro NCAP evaluation is based on the results in the categories of passenger protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection, and supporting safety systems.

‘With innovative safety systems and a comprehensive safety package, our new model is setting standards in its segment. Receiving the award for being the safest small car in the Euro NCAP crash tests confirms this once again,’ said Dr. Frank Welsch, Å KODA Board Member for Technical Development.

The new Å KODA Fabia was awarded the best rating of five stars by Euro NCAP in all four evaluation categories (passenger protection for adults, child safety, safety assistance systems and pedestrian protection). The evaluators appreciated the stability of the passenger compartment in particular. The maximum possible score was given for the protection of infants up to 18 months. The safety of children up to three years of also received a high rating.

The new Å KODA Fabia has been available in some European markets since mid-November 2014, and is now on sale in the UK. The third-generation model is winning over customers with its expressive design, eco-friendliness, technology and increased safety and comfort.

The new Å KODA Fabia features safety innovations previously reserved for vehicles from higher classes. In the UK, it comes with Front Assistant with integrated City Emergency Brake function as standard from SE specification. The system uses radar to constantly measure the distance to the vehicle in front, and intervenes if the car is too close.

The new Å KODA Fabia also feature a multi-collision brake, reducing the risk of a subsequent crash following a collision in the road. Furthermore, it now comes with optional Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue recognition), and safety systems including a speed limiter, Hill Hold Control and an electronic tyre pressure monitoring system.

The safety package in the new Å KODA Fabia provides the best possible protection in the event of an accident. Six airbags – front, side and head – protect passengers in combination with five three-point seat belts. A high-strength body and optimised crumple zones form the basis of increased passive safety.

Each of Å KODA’s vehicles now has the highest safety rating: all seven current models have received five stars in Euro NCAP tests at their launch – from the Citigo to the Superb. The top ratings have been the result of the company’s extensive efforts to achieve maximum active and passive vehicle safety.

Skoda adds New 2015 Fabia to the latest five star awards from EuroNCAP/

  • Results underline top-level safety of the new Å KODA Fabia
  • Small car provides outstanding occupant protection for adults and children
  • Innovative safety systems: ESC with Multi-Collision Brake, Front Assistant with City Emergency Braking Function, fatigue detection, Speedlimiter
  • Highest level of passive safety: six airbags as standard in EU countries
The new Å KODA Fabia has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The outstanding test results underline the high level safety of the new small car from Å KODA, which is going to be launched in the first European markets in the next couple of days.

The Euro NCAP rating is based on results for occupant protection for adults and children, pedestrian protection and safety assistance systems.

“One of the aims of the new Å KODA Fabia development was to bring top-level safety performance to the small car segment,” said Å KODA Board Member for Technical Development, Dr Frank Welsch. “The maximum five-star rating is confirmation by independent experts that we have achieved this goal and it shows that the new Å KODA Fabia is one of the safest small cars in the market,” said Dr Welsch.

The new Å KODA Fabia received the maximum five-star rating in all four areas (occupant protection for adults, child safety, safety assistance systems and pedestrian protection). The testers particularly emphasised the stability of the passenger compartment. For the protection of 18-month-old children the new Å KODA Fabia achieved maximum points, and the protection of three-year-old children was also awarded high marks.

The new Å KODA Fabia scored well thanks to innovative safety features that were previously reserved for higher vehicle segments. Front Assistant with integrated Emergency Braking Function is available on the new Å KODA Fabia (in the UK it is standard from SE specification). This system uses a radar sensor to continually measure the distance to the traffic ahead.

Whenever the distance is too small, the Assistant intervenes – from warnings to a full automatic emergency stop. Also in the new Å KODA Fabia is the Multi-Collision Brake which is part of the standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The Multi-Collision Brake reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a secondary collision following an accident.

Available for the first time in the new Å KODA Fabia is the optional Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection). Other safety systems include Speedlimiter (standard from SE), Hill-Hold Control and an electronic tyre pressure monitor.

The new Å KODA Fabia’s comprehensive safety package provides the best possible protection in case of an accident. Six airbags – front, side and head airbags – in combination with five three-point seat belts protect the occupants in case of a collision. High body rigidity and specifically optimised body crumple zones form the basis for the high passive safety.

The new Å KODA Fabia is available to order in the UK now, with first deliveries expected in February.

Tesla Model S, given the full top marks in latest EuroNCAP results

We’re pleased to announce that the Tesla Model S has received a maximum-possible 5-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP).

Model S is one of just a few cars to have ever achieved a 5-star safety rating from both Euro NCAP and the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Additionally, Model S is the only car this year to have achieved both a 5-star Euro NCAP rating and 5 stars in every NHTSA subcategory, including frontal impact, side impact, and rollover. Only two other cars have earned the same recognition since 2011 (when NHTSA introduced its latest rating scheme).

The reason so few models achieve 5-star ratings in both Europe and the U.S. is that each program places emphasis on different safety aspects in the assessment process.

NHTSA emphasizes structural and restraint safety, with a deep focus on how well the vehicle can withstand and absorb the energy of an impact while protecting its occupants. It is also primarily concerned with adult occupants.

On the other hand, Euro NCAP assesses a wider range of scenarios, including tests for child and pedestrian safety. Unlike for NHTSA, active safety is also an important part of Euro NCAP’s 5-star requirement. Every year, the European organization raises the standard for a 5-star rating to account for technological advances in the industry.

The dual 5-star ratings for Model S validate our holistic approach to safety. We have been engineering passive and active safety systems in parallel, so the car is structurally sound and is also designed to intelligently anticipate and react to potentially dangerous situations.

Structurally, Model S has advantages not seen in conventional cars. It has a low center of gravity because its battery pack, the largest mass in the car, is positioned underneath the passenger compartment, making rollover extremely unlikely. It also has a large front crumple zone because of the lack of an engine, meaning it can absorb more energy from a frontal impact, the most common type of crash resulting in fatalities.

Its body is reinforced with aluminum extrusions at strategic locations around the car, and the roof can withstand at least 4 g’s. It was for these reasons that Model S achieved 5 stars in every subcategory when tested by NHTSA in 2013.

This quarter, we started implementing the Model S active safety system in conjunction with the introduction of new Autopilot hardware, consisting of 12 ultrasonic sensors that sense up to 16 feet around the car, a forward-looking camera, a forward radar, and a digitally controlled, high-precision electric brake boost. We specifically selected this hardware to accommodate the progressive introduction of new safety features via software updates over the course of the next several months.

While the features already pushed to the Model S fleet – Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Warning – have proven sufficient to merit a 5-star NCAP rating, we will go much further with active safety systems. Features coming soon include Forward and Side Collision Warning and Avoidance, Blind Spot Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking.

Safety has always been Tesla’s top priority, and we remain committed to continuously improving Model S to ensure that adults, children, and pedestrians alike receive the best possible protection from the car and its technology. In the meantime, Model S owners can be secure in the knowledge that this recognition from Euro NCAP reaffirms their car’s outstanding safety qualities.
