The Top Ten movie cars and their values, The Car Oscars are here, well, the best of them !

As the annual Oscar winners are announced in Hollywood on Sunday 26 February, automotive experts, hpi has revealed its list of the most iconic cars to star on the silver screen and what they could be worth today.

Following a poll amongst its team of motoring editors, hpi has identified the top 10 most iconic movie cars:
10) 1977/2009 Chevrolet Camaro - Bumblebee from Transformers
9) 1970 Dodge Charger - Vin Diesel's car in The Fast & the Furious
8) 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback - as seen in Bullitt
7) 1980 Lamborghini Countach LP 4005 - as seen in Cannonball Run
6) 1966 Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider Duetto - as seen in The Graduate
5) 1968 Austin Mk I Mini Cooper S - as seen in The Italian Job
4) 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
3) 1963 Aston Martin DB5 - as seen in various James Bond movies
2) 1963  Model 117 VW Type 1 Beetle - as seen in Walt Disney’s Herbie movies
1) 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 - as seen in the Back to the Future trilogy
As a collection, the cars would have been worth a total of £30,362.00 based on RRP in their year of manufacture with the Ferrari from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off valued at £6,326.00 in 1961. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 was worth £4,175.00 in 1963, and featured in Goldfinger and Thunderball in 1964 and 1965 respectively as well as later Bond’s Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre.
At today’s estimated retail values the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder would fetch approx. £1.75m and the Aston Martin DB5, a cool £1m. The 1980 Lamborghini Countach LP 4005 would be worth £275k. In total, at today’s retail average estimated value the entire collection would pull in £3,002,500.00 – fetching a massive 99 times return on the original investment of £30,362.00.*
Philip Nothard, consumer and retail editor at hpi said: “We thought it would be fun to come up with a definitive list of the most iconic cars to feature in the movies from the past fifty years and look at their values then and what they’d be worth now.  Some of the cars featured are bona fide classics and worth a significant amount now – warranting pride of place amongst any car collection. The DeLorean from Back to the Future was deemed as the most iconic and interestingly it was one of the most expensive at the time retailing at just over £10k. It would fetch around £35k at current market values, considerably more if fitted with a Flux Capacitor!”
hpi recently launched a vehicle valuations service giving consumers the ability to buy and sell cars with utmost confidence, offering them the inside view on the total cost of ownership of a vehicle during its lifespan along with precise depreciation figures.
The hpi valuations tool www.hpivaluations.com is aimed at consumers buying and selling cars in the used car market and minimises the risks that can see consumers paying over the odds or not getting the best-asking price.
* some of the vehicle values were based on currency conversions, due to some vehicles not being available in the UK.  The value today is not for the actual car featured in the films but based on the general model

USA - The 2017 Dodge Charger earns 5 stars overall, the highest single rating in NHTSA’s vehicle-evaluation program

  • 2017 Dodge Charger earns five stars overall, the highest single rating in NHTSA’s vehicle-evaluation program
  • Five-star rating applies to both rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive versions
  • 2017 Dodge Charger features available Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus, which benefits from advanced sensor-fusion technology; feature provides alerts, autonomous braking and is capable of bringing vehicle to a full stop
  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist also among 80+ available safety and security features
  • Charger has now achieved five-star overall score 10 times — every year NHTSA included the car in its annual ratings
The 2017 Dodge Charger has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Both versions of the Charger, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, were evaluated for frontal and side impacts, and rollover resistance. The overall result was the same for each: five stars – the highest single rating in NHTSA’s vehicle-evaluation program.

“This further validates the robustness of our safety engineering,” says Mike Dahl, Head of Vehicle Safety and Regulatory Compliance, FCA – North America. “But crashworthiness is only half the story. We are immensely proud of the investment we’ve made in the driver-assist technologies that help enable crash mitigation.”

In its assessment of the 2017 Dodge Charger, which recorded a year-over-year sales increase of 35 percent in September, NHTSA notes the availability of Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning-Plus.

The Charger’s crash-mitigation system benefits from advanced sensor-fusion technology. Sensor-fusion leverages the combined attributes of radar and cameras to help deliver greater precision when determining if a frontal impact may be imminent.

If camera and radar agree that a frontal impact with another vehicle appears imminent, the system pre-fills the Charger’s brakes and transmits audible and visual warnings for the driver to react. If there is no driver response, the system triggers a brief brake application as a tactile alert.

If the driver remains unresponsive and frontal collision risk remains, the Charger’s brakes are applied to slow the vehicle before impact. The system may bring the vehicle to full stop if an imminent frontal collision is detected at speeds below 25 mph.

Sensor-fusion technology was once reserved for luxury-segment vehicles. Today, FCA US makes it available across six vehicle segments – from small SUV to minivan.
Sensor-fusion is the Company’s technology of choice for crash mitigation.

“Our commitment to such advancements was made clear when we signed an industry-wide agreement to proliferate this capability across our lineup,” Dahl says. “It is part of our ongoing contribution to the democratization of driver-assist features.”

The 2017 Dodge Charger offers more than 80 available safety and security features, including Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, which uses camera technology to help keep the driver aware of her/his vehicle position on the road. If the Charger veers toward a lane marker in a manner consistent with driver inattention, the system provides alerts and delivers automated steering inputs that help accommodate course correction.

A distinguishing element of Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist is that the level of steering input may be adjusted to suit an individual driver. The menu of choices is accessible through the Charger’s available 8.4-inch Uconnect center-stack touchscreen.

The fourth generation of Uconnect’s celebrated touchscreen makes its debut on the 2017 Dodge Charger, Challenger and Chrysler 300.

“The ability to fine tune such a feature helps improve driver comfort and confidence, both of which contribute to safe vehicle operation,” says Adam Chiappetta, Senior Manager – Active Safety and Driver-Assist Technologies at FCA US.

Since its launch in 2005, the Charger has been included in NHTSA’s annual ratings list on 10 occasions. Each time, it earned an overall score of five stars.

USA - Dodge celebrates as 7 Chrysler Group cars are named "Most Loved in the USA"

  • The 2014 Dodge Dart, Dodge Durango, Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Jeep® Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500 and Ram 2500/3500 have all been named the “Most Loved Vehicles in America” by Strategic Vision

Strategic Vision has named seven Chrysler Group LLC vehicles as its “Most Loved Vehicles in America,” including:

  • Dodge Dart (Small Car)
  • Dodge Durango (Mid-size SUV)
  • Dodge Charger (Large Car)
  • Dodge Challenger (Specialty Coupe)
  • Jeep® Grand Cherokee (Mid-size SUV)
  • Ram 1500 (Full-size Pickup)
  • Ram 2500 and 3500 (Heavy Duty Pickup)

Consumers were surveyed on whether they Hate or Love their vehicles, or particular aspects of the vehicle and the experiences they deliver. The best-of-the-best earned the titles of “Most Loved Vehicles in America,” reflecting how hard people can fall in love with what they drive.

“Having seven Chrysler Group vehicles named as ‘Most Loved Vehicles in America’ by Strategic Vision is a terrific honor,” said Reid Bigland, Head of U.S. Sales – Chrysler Group LLC. “It’s meaningful to have our customers express their satisfaction and emotional attachment they have with our vehicles; that is what drives us to create and develop vehicles that customers can continue to love.”

Scores are calculated using the reported Love score for each of the attributes delivered by the vehicle and the dealership experiences weighted by each vehicle’s outcome scores – commitment, overall satisfaction, total top emotional responses, proposed repurchase loyalty and actual repurchase loyalty – to provide a Most Loved Index™.

Each point, as measured on The Edwards Commitment Scale™, ranges from 1=Hate it, 2=a Failure, 3=Unsatisfactory, 4=Satisfactory, 5=Excellent, 6=Delightful and 7=Love it. Each point discriminates the quality and depth of the emotional response from the next.

“In our full-year automotive study, the winners both surprise and delight some pundits in the industry,” said Christopher Chaney, Executive Vice President for Strategic Vision. “Love creates vehicles that have a strong position in their markets and is ultimately expressed in being Loyal.”
