£1 Billion in Aston Martins ?, that will be a yes !

  • Largest gathering of Aston Martin cars in firm’s 100-year history
  • 50,000 visitors to Kensington Gardens view cars worth around £1bn
  • 1,200 guests travel to Gaydon HQ for unique dining experiences

Tens of thousands of eager owners and  enthusiasts made the trip to Kensington Gardens, London, yesterday to witness the largest gathering of iconic British sports cars in history as Aston Martin’s year-long programme of centenary celebrations made its way to the UK.

The unique display of some of the finest British sports cars ever made – which included a timeline of highly significant Aston Martin models as well as displays dedicated to the brand’s 50-year love affair with James Bond, its proud motorsport heritage and much else besides – drew exhibitors and visitors from across the UK, and far beyond.

Staged by the Aston Martin Owners Club, Aston Martin Heritage Trust and Aston Martin, and held with the kind permission of The Royal Parks and The Royal Household, the celebration in the capital was the culmination of a week-long programme of centenary activity which included specially-created driving tours across Europe as well as a host of unique events at the brand’s Gaydon headquarters.

Yesterday’s celebration, held under blazing sun and clear blue skies, saw an unprecedented gathering of the rarest, most significant and most beautiful Aston Martins ever made muster in the historic surroundings of Kensington Gardens.

As many as 550 Aston Martin models – worth around an estimated £1 billion – were on display in the Park or parked at nearby Perks Field, meaning the event also represented the largest single gathering of Aston Martins in history.

CEO Dr Ulrich Bez joined the events in London, which also included a glittering black tie party on Saturday night for 1,000 owners and invited guests at the Freemasons’ Hall on Great Queen Street in the heart of the city. The party featured entertainment from national radio DJ Benji B, plus composer Grant Windsor and the 16-piece band Deviation Strings.

Dr Bez said: “The weekend was a fantastic celebration of all things Aston Martin and, I believe, shows why the brand retains such a special place in the hearts of so many owners and enthusiasts around the world.

“Exclusivity is a key part of the Aston Martin mystique – we have made only around 65,000 cars in our entire 100-year history to date – so to see so many of these rare beauties gathered together in London was a truly historic occasion.”

He added: “I would like to acknowledge the generous support of the AMOC, AMHT and the Royal Parks, without which this incredible event would not have been possible.”

Themed car displays told Aston Martin’s remarkable story with the centrepiece of the event, the Centenary Timeline Display on the Broadwalk, taking visitors on a 100-year journey from the origins of the brand in Henniker Mews, Chelsea, to its current global headquarters in Warwickshire.

Every significant Aston Martin road car was represented from ‘A3’, the oldest surviving car, to the Vanquish Centenary Edition, forthcoming V12 Vantage S and Vanquish Volante. Meanwhile the luxury sports car maker’s exciting future was represented by the exceptional CC100 Speedster Concept – a tantalising glimpse of the potential shape of the brand’s cars in years to come.

Elsewhere in the park a Centenary Selection display was created to showcase the diverse and uniquely bespoke nature of the brand. This varied line-up included cars rarely seen outside of private collections including a brace of new Zagato models, the trio of Bertone Jets, and a number of other unique cars commissioned over the years by passionate customers around the world.

Aston Martin’s proud 50-year association with James Bond was of course enthusiastically marked with seven of the movie cars on display including the iconic DB5 from the most recent blockbuster, Skyfall.

Motorsport was, naturally, a key feature in Kensington, too, with a display dedicated to some of the most significant and successful racing cars in Aston Martin history. Highlights included the Ulster, iconic DBR1, legendary DB4 GT Zagato and Gulf-liveried V8 Vantage GTE.

Entry to the Centenary Celebration was free and upwards of 50,000 owners, enthusiasts and casual visitors soaked up the sun as they viewed rare and exceptional models drawn from Aston Martin’s sumptuous 100-year history.

Previously, around 1,200 guests had made the trip to the brand’s global HQ in Warwickshire for five days of innovative centenary-themed activities including the creation of a Michelin star-standard pop-up ‘restaurant’ on the Aston Martin production line. ‘Dine on the Line’ and its sister activity ‘Tea in Design’ – which saw guests take traditional afternoon tea in the stylish surroundings of the Aston Martin design studio – saw visitors treated to informative centenary displays, bespoke factory tours and, of course, some exceptional food and wine.

Dr Bez said: “Heritage is a vital part of the Aston Martin story and it is only right that we celebrate this in spectacular style here in the brand’s UK home. Now we can look to further global activities starting with our participation at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in just a few weeks’ time.”

The Aston Martin Centenary Celebration was created with the support of Aston Martin’s Centenary Technology Partner Microsoft and Centenary Celebration partners Bang & Olufsen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts, Louis Roederer, Viaggi, Pirelli and Zurich Private Clients.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has sold its 100,000th zero-emission car.

  • American graduate student took delivery of the 100,000th electric vehicle
  • Renault-Nissan EVs outsell all other major automakers combined
  • Nissan LEAF remains world’s best-selling EV
  • With its latest EV ZOE, Renault expands its zero-emission line-up and reinforces its leadership in Europe

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has sold its 100,000th zero-emission car.

Electric cars from Renault and Nissan have driven approximately 841 million zero-emission kilometres − enough to circle the earth more than 20,000 times. Together, they represent 53 million litres of oil saved and 124 million kg of CO2 that have not been emitted.

“The age of the mainstream zero-emission vehicle is here,” said Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “We expect demand to keep growing as the charging infrastructure develops – and we remain 100% committed to zero-emission technology for the long term.”

Renault-Nissan has sold more zero-emission cars than all other major automakers combined.

The very first EV from the Alliance is a Nissan LEAF owned by engineer Olivier Chalouhi in California’s Silicon Valley. He bought the LEAF when it debuted in December 2010.

The 100,000th customer was American graduate student Allison Howard, who became an owner of Nissan LEAF earlier this month and drives the car to Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, Georgia.

“It just drives perfectly. It’s so cool. I love it!” said Howard.

“The fact that it’s all electric and I don’t have to spend money on gas as a college student, that’s great,” she added.

For more information about Renault-Nissan’s electric vehicle customers and its 100,000 milestone, watch this video.

Nissan LEAF best-selling EV ever

More than 71,000 people worldwide have bought Nissan LEAF, the world’s best-selling electric vehicle. LEAF makes up more than half of all global sales of pure electric cars.

Nissan LEAF won the 2011 World Car of the Year, European Car of the Year 2011and Car of the Year Japan 2011-2012 awards.

More than 80% of LEAF buyers globally exchange cars from other automakers, making the LEAF one of the industry’s most innovative “conquest vehicles.” The majority of customers say the LEAF, which consumes no petroleum whatsoever, has replaced their conventional car for daily use.

The top markets for Nissan LEAF are the United States with about 30,000 units, Japan with 28,000 units, and Europe with 12,000 units.

In the United States, the LEAF is among the top 10 vehicles sold in San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu.

In Norway, the LEAF is one of the top 10 vehicles sold. The car is Nissan’s best-selling model in Norway, where more than 4,600 people have bought LEAFs since 2011. EVs in Norway are exempt from value added tax (VAT) and road tolls, and they have access to bus lanes and free parking.

Renault - Europe’s leader with full range of electric vehicles

Renault has sold about 30,000 electric vehicles since its first model, Kangoo Van Z.E., went on sale in late 2011. Kangoo Van Z.E. was voted International Van of the Year 2012.

Renault leads the electric vehicle market in Europe with a 61% share, including Twizy. Renault’s top markets in Europe are France, Germany and Italy.

In addition to the Kangoo Van Z.E., Renault also offers Fluence Z.E. saloon; the two-seat commuter vehicle Twizy; and the ZOE supermini, launched earlier this year.

Twizy is Renault’s best-selling model with about 11,000 units sold since it went on sale in early 2012.

Renault ZOE has a range of 130 miles and  sells from £13,995 (UK) on-the-road, plus battery hire from £70 per month. Renault began selling the ZOE in March throughout Europe and has sold about 5,000 units.

Committed to a zero-emission future

The Alliance is the industry leader in EVs and remains fully committed to a zero-emission future, with vehicles that can be recharged using purely renewable energy.

The plug-in cars store energy in a lithium-ion battery that meets or exceeds all environmental and safety standards wherever they are sold. The vehicles can be “topped off” at any charge point, or they can be fully recharged overnight from the convenience of the driver's home, garage or parking deck.

In order to accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles around the world, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is working with government authorities, utility companies and others to rollout a network of charging stations that allow drivers to recharge their cars from zero to 80% capacity in less than 30 minutes.

New SEAT Sports Tourer (ST) expands the Leon range with style and versatility.

  • First pictures of the all-new SEAT Leon ST estate
  • Based on the new third-generation Leon, it is the first ever Leon estate car
  • Combines stunning looks with outstanding practicality
  • 587-litre boot stretches to a huge 1,470 litres
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) and Progressive Steering added to Leon technology

SEAT today unveils the all-new Leon ST. It becomes the third member of the new Leon family, which now comprises five-door hatchback, three-door SC and five-door ST estate.

Its luggage space offers an impressive level of versatility and superb functionality, down to the tiniest detail, and like the rest of the Leon range, the Leon ST features excellent workmanship and premium materials. In every way, the Leon ST follows the emotional SEAT design language of the five-door and SC versions, and its handling is just as precise and dynamic.

And with the debut of the Leon ST, SEAT is expanding the extensive line-up of hi-tech options already available with the model, introducing Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) damper adjustment, and Progressive Steering.

The optional Dynamic Pack, including DCC and Progressive Steering, enables a high degree of control under sporty driving conditions.

“Nobody has to choose anymore between sporty and practical. The new Leon ST offers both,” says Jürgen Stackmann, President and CEO of SEAT S.A. “With its sporty look, its surprisingly high utility and its state-of-the-art technology, the Leon ST defines a new standard in the compact estate car class – at a very fair price. Like the already highly successful Leon and Leon SC, the new ST is the perfect representative of SEAT’s brand values.”

Dynamic and efficient engines

Alongside achieving a distinctly sporty look, exceptional efficiency was very high up the list of priorities in the development of the SEAT Leon ST. The fuel-efficient TDI and TSI engines, with displacements ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 litres and output from 105 PS to 184 PS, all feature direct injection and turbocharging.

The engine range available for the Leon SC is the same as that for the five-door and SC versions. All have Start/Stop and Energy Recovery systems, from the 1.2 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel, right up to the most powerful 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI units.

The 1.2 TSI 105 PS engine returns an impressive 57.6 mpg, while the state-of-the-art 1.4 TSI 140 PS runs it very close, with a 53.3 mpg average figure. At the top of the petrol line-up is the 1.8 TSI engine, available in FR trim only, delivering 180 PS and 250 Nm of torque.

The entry level diesel model is the 1.6 TDI with 105 PS and a strong 250 Nm of torque. The 2.0 TDI with 150 PS and 320 Nm of torque provides powerful propulsion, yet with the Start/Stop and Energy Recovery, it manages to emit just 106 g/km CO2 and return 68.9 mpg.

A sporty highlight is the 2.0 TDI with 184 PS and 380 Nm of torque – another FR exclusive – which achieves an awesome 65.7 miles on average per gallon of fuel used.

Systematic lightweight design

The impressive fuel economy figures are not only the result of efficient engines, but of systematic lightweight design. In the base version, the Leon ST weighs in at just 1,233 kg, making it a mere 45 kg heavier than the five-door Leon and the lightest estate in its class. Nevertheless, the ST offers a host of functional equipment details that significantly benefit everyday usability. The rear seat backrests are extremely easy to fold down from the luggage compartment, while the double floor makes the boot very easy to load and unload. The passenger-seat backrest can be folded over to accommodate especially long items.

“We have achieved a perfect suspension setup which combines comfort and agility,” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, SEAT Executive Vice President for Research and Development. “Starting with the Leon ST, DCC together with further advanced driver assistance systems are available now for the whole family.”

Unique design language

The much applauded design language of the Leon range has been further accentuated for the ST. Here, too, sculpted lines along the sides deliver a thrilling interplay of light and shade. The estate also features the same sharp lines and precise edges that communicate energy and vitality. The rear end, extended by 27 cm, provides an indication of the generous load space, while the angled rear windscreen, gently rounded roofline and muscular shoulders all emphasise the dynamic driving pleasure. The Leon ST is 4.54 metres long.

The technical elegance of the Leon ST is further accentuated by the optional full-LED headlights in combination with LED rear lights.

“At SEAT Design, we believe that dynamic character does not have to suffer at the hands of functionality. The new Sport Tourer adds a whole new dimension to the Leon family – the dynamic silhouette looks taut and elegant, yet the Leon ST offers full utility for both work and leisure, for family and sport,” says Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, Head of SEAT Design. “The Leon ST is simply unique in its FR variant. With its expressively sporty design front and rear, it brings new meaning to the term sports estate.”

Adaptive Chassis Control and Adaptive Cruise Control

The well-balanced chassis makes the Leon ST brilliantly dynamic to drive. The finely tuned steering rack provides excellent feedback, while the suspension smoothly masters all manner of road surface irregularities.

For FR versions, SEAT is offering a new Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) system with three different driving modes that can be selected via the SEAT Drive Profile. DCC is an additional function to the SEAT Drive Profile system already standard with FR-specification Leon models, adjusting the damper settings depending on the mode that Drive Profile is switched to.

In “Sport” mode, the Leon ST is even more agile, while the estate is noticeably more comfortable in the “Comfort” setting of the DCC system, selectable within the Drive Profile’s “Eco” or “Individual” modes. The optional Dynamic Pack includes DCC and Progressive Steering, which reduces steering effort when parking, while at the same time improving handling with more direct steering characteristics on winding roads.

New to the driver assistance systems for the SEAT Leon is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The radar-based system maintains the specified speed and a pre-set distance, automatically accelerating and decelerating in flowing traffic. The speed can be set within a range from 19 mph to 99 mph. ACC works with manual transmissions and DSG alike.

State-of-the-art assistance and infotainment systems

When it comes to driver assistance and infotainment solutions, the new SEAT Leon ST is fully up-to-the-minute. Safety technology includes Multi-Collision Brake, Tiredness Recognition and Lane Assist, while the SEAT Easy Connect infotainment operating system is an intuitive way of controlling entertainment and communication. Easy Connect includes a standard colour touch-screen and full Bluetooth phone and music connectivity.

A new F-Type goes to tour de France winner Chris Froome

Tour de France winner Chris Froome is presented with unique Jaguar F-TYPE

To celebrate an outstanding second victory in the Tour de France for Team Sky, Jaguar today rewarded race winner Chris Froome with a very special Jaguar F-TYPE sports car.

Jaguar has contributed to the success of Froome and Team Sky in 2013 through provision of the Jaguar XF Sportbrake as the team’s official support vehicle.

As part of the #GetBehindTeamSky social media campaign created by Jaguar, fans were asked to tweet their own images of support. An overwhelming response followed, with selected photographs forming the famous ‘Team Sky’ line running down the centre of the car. In this case, the livery is yellow rather than blue, in recognition of Team Sky’s achievement. The design mimics the livery of the Team Sky Jaguar XF Sportbrake, which featured the images submitted by supporters during the final stage of the Tour in Paris on Sunday.

The victory marks back-to-back successes in the Tour for Team Sky, with Chris Froome becoming the second British rider to win the Yellow Jersey after Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2012.

Chris Froome commented:

“Every young cyclist dreams of one day riding in the Tour de France, let alone winning it. I haven’t done it alone though. Team Sky has a great set of partners, and I’d like to thank Jaguar for their brilliant support over the past four years. They've invested a lot of time and ingenuity into designing the XF Sportbrake, which is the perfect race support car for us. It has been crucial to keeping the team on the road throughout the competition.”

David Steele, Jaguar Global Brand Experience Director commented:

“It is an absolute pleasure to once again celebrate a Tour de France victory with Team Sky. Being part of the story is a real privilege for everyone at Jaguar.  We congratulate the Team and I am sure Chris Froome will enjoy celebrating with an invigorating drive in his new F-TYPE.”

BMW announces pricing for the new i3 Electric car, not the cheapest

BMW UK today announced the pricing of one of the most anticipated cars in its history. The all-new BMW i3 will be delivered to customers in the UK in November, 2013 with a leasing price starting from just £369* a month.

Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW, said: “The BMW i3 heralds the dawn of a new era for individual mobility and for the BMW Group. True to a genuine BMW, the BMW i3 has strong emotional appeal, outstanding product substance and a guarantee of sheer driving pleasure. With this leading-edge vehicle and compelling price, we will provide customers with an attractive offer for electromobility.”

Customers entering into an agreement for an all-electrically powered BMW i3 can embark on a world of electric motoring by signing up to a 36 month contract and paying an initial £2,995 (incl. VAT)  followed by monthly payments of £369 (incl. VAT) and contract mileage of 24,000miles.

Those customers who wish to buy the BMW i3 outright can do so from £25,680 OTR** for the all electric car, while the price for the range extender version, that features an additional 650cc two-cylinder petrol engine to maintain the battery charge and extend the range to an approximate 180 miles on one tank of fuel, will be announced at a later date.

BMW i3 products and services will be sold via a multi-channel sales model, comprised of authorized BMW i partners, a Customer Interaction Center (CIC) as well as an online platform. All sales channels will be fully networked and customers will be able to personalise their entire purchasing process to suit their needs.

Charging and maintenance
The BMW i3 comes as standard in the UK with AC Fast Charging which sees a 7.4Kw charge power up the BMW i3 from zero to 80 per cent within three hours. This can be performed by the optional BMW i Wallbox. The exclusive Wallbox has been created to give customers a comprehensive and premium sustainable mobility experience. Installation will be provided at the customer’s home and “green” power options will be offered via selected BMW i partners, for emission-free home charging. AC Fast Charging is also the most widespread public charging option in the UK.

Occasional charging can also be performed using a pre-supplied cable, fitting a standard household socket at 3.7Kw, when a 32 Amp AC Fast Charging port is not available. Charging this way takes eight to 10 hours. DC Fast Charging is the third and final option available to owners and allows a BMW i3 to get an 80 per cent charge in just 30 minutes to one hour. It uses a 50Kw connection to do this and is the best option for public locations where quick short charges are required.

The BMW i3 will have its international world premiere on 29 July at parallel events in the megacities of London, New York and Beijing where full details on the BMW i3 range will be revealed.

    • 9,300 mile route crosses nine time zones, five countries and two continents
    • British media and Mazda dealers from UK to drive three legs of challenging route

Mazda has long been famed for the robust quality and reliability of its vehicles and the all-new Mazda3 builds on those key attributes.  To prove just how good its new model is, Mazda is sending eight of its new compact hatchbacks on an unconventional test drive – travelling more than 9,300 miles from the factory in Hiroshima to the 2013 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany.

The ‘Mazda Route3 – Hiroshima to Frankfurt Challenger Tour 2013’ crosses nine time zones, five countries and two continents, traversing Russia (the world’s largest country), before crossing Belarus and Poland.  Driven by journalists, bloggers and Mazda dealers, the convoy of new Mazda3 cars will arrive in Frankfurt on Saturday 7 September, three days before the motor show opens its doors.  Mazda fans can follow the convoy’s progress on a dedicated website available at www.mazda.co.uk/mazdaroute3/ which will feature a trip diary with images and videos.

After taking a ferry across the Sea of Japan, the main overland portion of the Mazda Route3 endurance test drive begins in Vladivostok, Russia’s main Pacific port, on 3 August.   British media and Mazda dealers from the UK will be among the first crews to pilot the Mazda3 test fleet when they participate in the three legs from Vladivostok to Krasnoyars, via Blagoveshensk and Ulan-Ude.

Averaging just over 1,300 miles, the seven ensuing legs of the tour will take between three and six days each to cover.  The endurance test will provide ample opportunity for those behind the wheel – journalists and Mazda enthusiasts from various parts of the world – to become well acquainted with the all-new Mazda3 under a variety of conditions.  There will also be several opportunities along the way to experience different cultures and customs.

All the Mazda3 hatchback test cars will be powered by a 120ps SKYACTIV-G petrol engine mated to a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission.  From the stunning ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ exterior design to the advanced lightweight SKYACTIV technology and a completely redesigned cabin space, the convention-defying all-new Mazda3 is built to exceed customer expectations.

Enhancing traditional Mazda strengths, new Mazda3 delivers uncompromising handling, safety and build quality.  In the UK, there will be a choice of two bodystyles (hatchback and fastback), three SKYACTIV-G petrol engines and one SKYACTIV-D diesel – all offering an unbeatable combination of performance, fuel economy and low emissions that should place the all-new Mazda3 among the best in Europe’s C-segment.

This will be the third time that Mazda models have taken part in such an extreme test drive.  In 1977, German reporters drove two predecessors of the Mazda3 – Mazda 323 hatchbacks – from Japan to Frankfurt.  The expedition was followed up successfully in 1990, when four Mazda 626s crossed the former Soviet Union.  Now the stage is set for the most advanced Mazda compact ever to follow in their tracks.

DATSUN GO, the car to mobilise a new generation

    • Datsun is back; new Datsun GO unveiled in New Delhi, India.
    • Datsun GO is the first Datsun car for the 21st century.
    • Developed locally, Datsun GO will also be locally produced.
    • Datsun is the third Nissan Motor Company's brand.
    • Datsun stands for Dream, Access and Trust (D.A.T.).

DELHI, India – Datsun today unveiled the first new Datsun car for the 21st century. The all-new Datsun GO will be on sale in India in early 2014.

The Datsun GO is the realization of the commitment made by Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. in March 2012 to return the Datsun brand to the marketplace. Datsun is the third brand for the Nissan Motor Company along with the company's Nissan and Infiniti brands. Datsun will play an important role in the Nissan Power 88 mid-term business plan.

“This is an historic day for Nissan Motor Company and for our customers and partners in some of the world's fastest-growing markets. It's also an exciting moment for many women and men here in India who – today – come one step closer to realizing the dream of purchasing a car," said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan Motor President and CEO, when unveiling the car.

The five-door, front-wheel drive hatchback will come with a 1.2-liter engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission that offers optimal response time and agility in congested traffic.

With comparatively compact body dimensions (width – 1635mm; height – 1485mm; length– 3785mm), the car is spacious inside thanks to a wide stance and large wheelbase (2450mm), and offers ample headroom and an expanded front seating configuration. It will be a reliable partner for families, providing comfort to five occupants and agility in congested traffic.

For those customers never wanting to part with their favorite music and pictures Datsun GO will offer a very practical solution – Mobile Docking Station to connect with their smartphones.

Datsun GO is expected to be “a category up" in its price range, attractively priced below INR 400,000, or £4400 GBP or $6700 USD (based on current exchange rates, fluctuations, taxes and local requirements may mean price increases)

This all-new car has been built to meet the needs of recent rising group of optimistic customers in high-growth markets who seek better value propositions. These are people who want transportation that supports their everyday needs, but that also fulfills their dreams and ambitions for a better tomorrow. They are literally “on the move." They want to GO further, so the name of the car reflects this aspiration.

The name of the new car is inspired by the first Datsun, the DAT-GO, launched almost a century ago in Japan. Back then the cars brought mobility to people who had never dreamed of car ownership before. The reignited Datsun brand and the Datsun GO will bring a similar combination of aspiration and trustworthiness.

Datsun GO is high quality, stylish and modern, delivering an engaging driving experience. The overall Datsun customer offer will include a worry-free ownership experience, competitive total cost, accessible services, with transparent pricing, and dealership proximity.

“When a customer buys his first new car in countries like India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa, first he dreams about it. To realize the dream, customers need to have access, feel a sense of belonging towards the Brand. Also, as this purchase will represent a significant part of their disposal income, it is important for them to have full trust in the brand and the product. So Dream, Access and Trust are key values for which the Datsun brand stands now," said Vincent Cobee, who leads Datsun.

Datsun models will be individually developed for different markets, but the concept will follow a common inspiration. Datsun GO will be the first of several Datsun models that will be launched later in 2014 in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa.

While Nissan Motor's Global design center in Japan was responsible for the Datsun GO styling, R&D and engineering development for the project were entrusted to local engineering resources and suppliers to ensure the product would suit local market conditions, preferences, tastes and needs, and would be accessible in terms of price and supply. The project development was of course backed by the full assurance of the global Japanese car manufacturer's accumulated expertise and quality assurance.

Datsun GO will be produced at one of the newest Renault-Nissan Alliance factories at Oragadam, in Chennai.

VW Beetle GSR pricing released, from $30,000

    • Pricing starts at $29,995 for GSR® with manual transmission and $31,095 with the DSG® automatic
    • Classic 1970s Beetle serves as inspiration for the GSR model
    • Limited edition of just 3500 worldwide
    • Leather-trimmed sport seats and unique GSR trim mark out the interior
Volkswagen of America, Inc., announced that pricing of the 2014 Beetle GSR® will start at $29,995 for models equipped with a six-speed manual transmission; the base price for the version equipped with the six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic is $31,095.

Just 3500 of these striking yellow-and-black GSR models will be built globally. Taking its cue from the GSR (“Yellow Black Racer”) of the 1970s, the new car also has a yellow-and-black color scheme: the body and R-Line® bumpers are finished predominantly in yellow; the hood is mainly black; and the trunklid, roof, and the exterior mirror caps are black. The car has yellow/black stripes with “GSR” lettering above the side skirts and a large rear spoiler to complete the look. The GSR rides on 19-inch “Tornado” aluminum-alloy wheels shod with 235/40 tires and also features black-painted brake calipers.

The GSR has a unique interior with a yellow/black theme, sport seats, and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel. The black-trimmed leather seating surfaces and high-grip leather-wrapped steering wheel have contrasting yellow stitching. Other interior changes include an R-Line dash pad, a GSR shift lever, a leather-wrapped handbrake lever, and black floormats with contrasting yellow embroidery. A badge on the steering wheel is marked with the special-edition number (1 through 3500) to emphasize the uniqueness of the car.

The new GSR model’s EA888 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter TSI® engine makes 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds and to reach an electronically governed top track speed of 130 mph. Most impressively, the engine delivers peak torque from as low as 1700 rpm, giving smooth, effortless acceleration in all the gears. The GSR comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a dual-clutch DSG six-speed automatic transmission is optional.

Since the GSR is based on the R-Line with Sunroof and Sound with Navigation model, it comes comprehensively equipped with the Fender® Premium Audio System; a panoramic sunroof; the RNS 315® navigation system; Keyless access with push-button start; Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs; LED license-plate lighting; heatable front seats; Bluetooth® connectivity; a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® cable; three-color ambient lighting; aluminum-alloy-look pedals; and three auxiliary instruments that include a clock with a stopwatch function and a boost gauge.

Revolutionary foam blocks unwanted noise in 2014 Jeep Cherokee

    • Revolutionary acoustic foam formula contributes to weight-reduction and fosters sustainability
    • Blocks unwanted cabin noise; enhances all-new Jeep Cherokee driving experience
    • Lower viscosity enables easier application for greater assembly-line efficiency

The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is all-new, inside and out, including a revolutionary body sealer that helps deliver a tranquil driving experience while contributing to weight-reduction, cost-savings and sustainability.

The Toledo Assembly Complex, home to the all-new Jeep Cherokee, features special applicators that inject a unique acoustic foam into strategic locations of the vehicle’s body structure. The foam blocks unwanted noise from entering the vehicle cabin, but because its density is lower than conventional acoustic material, it affords weight savings of up to 1.5 lbs. per vehicle, which contributes to improved fuel economy and better handling.

“At Chrysler Group, we are working on a number of initiatives that further our sustainability efforts while also addressing key product goals, such as on-road refinement combined with off-road ruggedness for the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee,” said Bill Hall-Director of Sustainability and Business Continuity. “This new foam not only helps deliver noise reduction and improved fuel efficiency, but its renewable content minimizes the impact on the environment.”

Developed with and supplied by Dow Automotive Systems, BETAFOAM™ Renue features a soy-based product instead of the petroleum normally used in such material. And because its density is lower than that of conventional material, less foam is required to achieve the desired performance, which translates to reduced cost.

The new foam bolsters 10 locations of the Cherokee’s body structure, including the A- and B-pillars and rear wheelwells. Because of its lower viscosity, it also is easier to work with than conventional acoustic material – a decided advantage on the assembly line.

In addition, the new foam affords greater logistical flexibility for the plant because its six-month shelf life is two times longer than that of commonly used foam.

The new foam was first used early this year at Chrysler Group’s Sterling Heights Assembly plant, home to the 2013 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger midsize sedans. Existing equipment was adapted to accommodate the injection process there, whereas the Toledo site features all-new equipment.

The 2014 Chevy Impala receives the highest 5 star safety score.

The 2014 Chevrolet Impala has received the highest possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety as part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

“Safety is a key consideration for all car buyers, and Impala sets a new benchmark for Chevrolet’s flagship sedan,” said Gay Kent, GM general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness. “The 2014 Chevrolet Impala is designed to provide excellent crash safety, and offers customers several safety technologies not previously available in Chevrolets.”

The redesigned, full-size sedan presents one of the most comprehensive collections of standard and available safety features in the segment. It employs advanced technologies – including radar – to help avoid crashes. Visual and audible alerts, depending on the alert feature, help drivers identify potential crash situations and even intervene when a crash threat appears more imminent. The alerts are designed to identify potential threats with sufficient warning to give the driver time to react and make changes.

The available safety features and benefits include:

    • Full-speed-range adaptive cruise control – Radar technology senses traffic in front of the Impala to adjust vehicle speed, including stopping the vehicle in heavy traffic and accelerating again. It is the first application in a Chevrolet.
    • Crash imminent braking – Another Chevy first: Radar technology detects a possible crash threat and alerts the driver. If the driver does not appear to react quickly enough or doesn’t react at all, this feature intervenes to apply the brakes in an effort to avoid the crash.
    • Forward collision alert – Camera technology detects a possible crash threat and alerts the driver, giving him or her time to stop and/or change course.
    • Lane departure warning – A camera-based lane detection system warns the driver of unsignaled lane changes. The camera, mounted near the inside rearview mirror, identifies traffic lane markings and provides audible alerts.
    • Side blind zone alert – Using radar sensors on both sides of the vehicle, the system “looks” for other vehicles in the blind zone areas of the Impala and indicates their presence with light-emitting diode, or LED-lit symbols in the outside mirrors.
    • Rear cross traffic alert – Based on the radar sensors of side blind zone alert, it warns the driver of vehicles in traffic when backing out of a parking spot – including angled parking. Visual and audible alerts are triggered if moving vehicles are detected.
    • Rear vision camera with dynamic guidelines – With a display in the center stack infotainment system, the camera provides a view of objects directly behind the Impala, while the dynamic guidelines provide a reference that helps make parking and other maneuvers easier.
    • Ultrasonic rear park assist – Uses sensors in the rear bumper to detect objects directly behind the vehicle and alerts the driver.
    • Brake pre-fill feature – To quicken the response time of the brakes and help shorten stopping distances, this features “loads” the brake calipers in anticipation of hard braking by slightly increasing the hydraulic pressure in the brake lines whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal. This feature is included on models equipped with adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation braking.
    • Hill hold/start assist – Applies the brakes for about 1.5 seconds to prevent roll-back when the driver moves his or her foot from the brake to the accelerator pedal.

The advanced, crash-avoidance technologies complement the Impala’s occupant protection features, including 10 standard air bags:

    • Dual-stage frontal passenger air bags with passenger sensing system
    • Driver and front passenger side-impact air bags
    • Driver and front passenger knee air bags
    • Rear outboard side-impact air bags
    • Head curtain air bags with rollover sensing for front and rear outboard positions
    • Safety belt pretensioners
    • Child seat restraint system.
    • Impala also employs systems that enable greater vehicle control, including standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, all-speed traction control, four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel antilock brakes and electronic brake force distribution, which ensures optimal braking force at both axles for maximum stability under heavy braking.

OnStar is standard. It uses GPS and cellular phone technology to automatically call for help in the event of crash. OnStar service also includes MyLink mobile apps, which offer vehicle information and OnStar services via the customer’s smartphone.
