Purpose

I will try my best to provide detailed info on various cars and what is like to live with them, I have already produced a few for Jaguar-car-forums, I will do my best to be unbiased, but it will be hard for some cars. I will re-produce press releases and copy from other motoring news.

ŠKODA has started to produce new three-cylinder petrol engines

ŠKODA has started to produce new three-cylinder petrol engines at its main plant in Mladá Boleslav. The 1,0 MPI unit from the EA211 engine range is available in two power output levels (44 kW and 55 kW) and achieves excellent figures in weight, fuel consumption and emissions.

“We have substantially expanded our car manufacturing capacities in Mladá Boleslav over the past few years. We are now gearing up to also increase the number of produced engines,” says Michael Oeljeklaus, ŠKODA Member of the Board for Production and Logistics. “The kick-off of the EA 211 three-cylinder MPI engine is an important milestone in powertrain production for us in the Czech Republic, and proof of the strong dedication of our employees,” adds Oeljeklaus.

The Volkswagen Group´s EA211 engine range includes three- and four-cylinder petrol engines with a displacement ranging from 1.0 to 1.6 litres. ŠKODA has been manufacturing EA211 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines since 2012. The Mladá Boleslav plant is now expanding this operation to include the production of the 1,0 MPI unit. The MPI abbreviation stands for Multi Point Injection. The new engine will be used in small and compact cars made by ŠKODA, SEAT and Volkswagen.

The new three-cylinder unit will delight users with its low fuel consumption and emissions, as well as with its low weight. The 1,0 MPI engine offers a wide range of usable RPMs under various engine loads with reliable, robust and dynamic performance even at low engine speeds. These characteristics give it a defined advantage in city driving. The engine meets strict EU 6 emission standards and is available in two power output levels, 44 kW (60 HP) and 55 kW (75 HP).

The start of production of the 1.0 MPI engine again underlines the high levels of ŠKODA’s technical expertise in powertrain production and development. Since 2001, ŠKODA has been making EA 111 1.2 HTP engines at its plant alongside EA 211 TSI and MPI engines. The car maker has produced its three millionth 1.2 HTP engine at the beginning of May.

ŠKODA continues to focus on gearboxes in the area of component production. The company makes MQ 200 and MQ/SQ 100 gearboxes at its plant in Mladá Boleslav. The Vrchlabí plant manufactures dual-clutch automatic DQ 200 gearboxes.

ŠKODA aims to expand its competency in engine and powertrain production in the upcoming years. To this end, the car maker is currently building an engine testing centre as part of the brand’s Česana development headquarters in Mladá Boleslav. ŠKODA and Volkswagen are investing over EUR 34m in this project alone. This is currently the largest investment into technical development in the Czech Republic.

Engine production in Mladá Boleslav dates back to 1899. Four years after Václav Laurin and Václav Klement (L&K) founded their company to manufacture bicycles, they installed an auxiliary engine to a bicycle to make a so-called motocyclette. At the time, these single-track vehicles used single-cylinder engines with an output of 1.25 or 1.75 horsepower.
