Thunder and lightning made for a spectacular reveal of the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Feature this evening. BMW took centre stage as Honoured Marque at the world’s most luxurious motoring event, celebrating 100 years of BMW.
BMW guests and media enjoyed a sumptuous dinner at Goodwood House, followed by speeches by Lord March and Dr Nicholas Peter around the turning circle, beneath sculptor Gerry Judah’s glorious creation.
The magnificent floodlit sculpture swept up into a sky lit up with its own fireworks as guests waited to see their own dramatic display. Music, lasers in blues and golds, and “1916 – 2016” illuminated in fireworks against Goodwood House accompanied the official reveal, as a cavalcade of BMW’s finest cars swept up the famous Goodwood hill and the propellers of a Klemm Kl 35 spun lit with the BMW badge.
Epitomising this year’s Festival of Speed theme, ‘Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power’, the magnificent Central Feature comprises three sweeping steel forms put together in a celebration of speed and dynamism. BMW’s myriad motorsport successes are represented on each arm, with the legendary BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster, the Gordon Murray-designed Brabham-BMW BT52, and the Le Mans-winning BMW V12 LMR featured.
Showcasing the diversity of its brands – BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad – BMW Group will celebrate its illustrious sporting heritage across the Festival weekend, alongside the stylish cars and motorcycles of its current range.
Visitors will be able to see and hear many products from BMW’s past that continue to make their mark on the company today. Cars steering their way up Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile course include a beautiful 1957 BMW 507, the Mille Miglia-winning BMW 328 Touring Coupé from 1940, and a 1965 BMW 1800 TI/SA – an early example of BMW’s unparalleled success in touring car racing. Meanwhile, motorcycle enthusiasts will be treated to an array of classic and modern bikes including a 1966 BMW R50 S Kaczor, a 1976 BMW R90S TT and legendary WR750 Kompressor from 1929.
Lord March will officially open the Festival of Speed’s Press and Preview Day at the Moving Motor Show tomorrow morning, taking the wheel of a classic BMW 507.
Goodwood Road Racing Club members can very much look forward to their own spectacular reveal tomorrow evening, at the club’s annual summer ball.
